For the past few months I’ve been printing labels for my MiniDisc collection using a Canon Ivy 2 mini printer. It prints on 2×3 inch sticker sheets that cost roughly $0.60 CAD per sticker. At first I attempted to use publicly available templates for it, but quickly I found that I had more success if I made my own in GIMP. I designed a template that allows you to print two MiniDisc labels at once on an Ivy printer, which then need to be cut in half to be applied to the discs. Here are some photos of the results, as well as a download link for the .xcf template.

If you want OCR, it outputs a PDF.
But it can also output to image formats like PNG (but images don’t have OCR).
There are lots of options in the software, but the defaults work for 90% of regular documents.

If it’s all pretty much letter/legal size (or international equivalent), the Canon imageFORMULA DR-C230 (and similar models) do a great job. The scanning software it comes with will scan to PDF and includes OCR.

Republicans on Tuesday blocked a bill that would have created a right to access in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments and mandated that insurance plans cover the practice, deriding the vote as a political ploy.
Senators voted against advancing the bill, 51-44, marking the second time Democrats have sought to put Republicans on the record on the contentious issue. Sixty votes were needed to open debate on the measure.
Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) voted with every Democrat and independent.
Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) did not vote.
GOP senators derided the Democratic legislation, authored by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), as nothing more than a show vote, accusing Democrats of misrepresenting Republicans’ views on IVF.
Ahead of the vote, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tried to pass via voice vote a competing bill he and Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) introduced earlier this year that would withhold Medicaid funding from states that ban IVF, but it was blocked by Democrats.

The industry could easily switch to calling it ECMAScript.
You have long ago abandoned the JavaScript trademark, and it is causing widespread, unwarranted confusion and disruption.
JavaScript is the world’s most popular programming language, powering websites everywhere. Yet, few of the millions who program in it realize that JavaScript is a trademark you, Oracle, control. The disconnect is glaring: JavaScript has become a general-purpose term used by countless individuals and companies, independent of any Oracle product.

- Be able to turn off the swipe feature since most people who use the remote get mis-swipes when trying to click the big button
- Always play HDR correctly instead of messing up the color channels
For #2, this started after an OS update. It worked fine before. Now, HDR starts playing with messed up color channels (black looks magenta). If I shut off the AppleTV and turn it back on and resume playing, the channels are fine. Also, occasionally, it will just give static and make popping noises. I can’t find any setting that would fix this.

The best times to view the event will depend on your location, but the lunar eclipse will peak at 10:44 p.m. ET, according to NASA. All of North and South America will have a chance to see the partial lunar eclipse and harvest supermoon depending on the weather. Europe and Africa will also have an opportunity to see the eclipse.
This lunar eclipse will be a partial one, with only the upper portion of the moon being plunged into the darkest part of the Earth's shadow known as the umbra, Monsue said.

The starting point of the infection chain is an email message containing a link that mimics a legitimate or compromised domain that, when clicked, triggers the redirection to the actor-controlled credential harvesting page.
To lend the phishing attempt a veneer of legitimacy, the malicious webmail login pages have the recipients' email addresses pre-filled. Attackers have also been observed using legitimate domains that offer URL shortening, tracking, and campaign marketing services.
"By carefully mimicking legitimate domains and redirecting victims to official sites, attackers can effectively mask their true objectives and increase the likelihood of successful credential theft," the researchers said.

There isn’t much green in the Sahara Desert, but after an unusual influx of rain, the color can be seen from space creeping into parts of one of the driest places in the world.
Satellites recently captured plant life blooming in parts of the typically arid southern Sahara after storms moved there when they shouldn’t. It has also caused catastrophic flooding. And scientists say a world warming due to fossil fuel pollution is making both more likely.

You copy/make a shortcut to Firefox. Then edit the target to: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P ProfileName -no-remote
where ProfileName
is the name you set during the (convoluted) setup.
-no-remote
isn’t needed on the first profile you launch but is needed on subsequent profiles you want to run concurrent to the first one.
Edit: I have up to six profiles I run at once, and I also use the Container Tabs extension.

I don’t really use those words unless I’m in a state my brain cannot better articulate my thoughts and feelings. They are a crude tool.
Reminds me of:
https://quoteinvestigator.com/2012/08/29/substitute-damn/
…there is one thing I wish you would do when you sit down to write news stories, and that is: Never use the word, “very.” It is the weakest word in the English language; doesn’t mean anything. If you feel the urge of “very” coming on, just write the word, “damn,” in the place of “very.” The editor will strike out the word, “damn,” and you will have a good sentence.

Governor Ron DeSantis opposes Amendment 4, which would enshrine abortion access in the state constitution if 60 percent of the state’s voters approve. He says some of the petitions that were submitted to get the measure on the ballot were fraudulent. But abortion access advocates say the governor’s moves are intended to intimidate and discourage supporters from voting.

The actor’s statement was included as part of Mother Jones’ exposé on her sister, Pamela Carter, the far-right Republican running to represent part of Maricopa County in the Arizona House of Representatives.

I see more and more posts that are just a link to a video, post, or article. There’s no text in the description. I’d like to see some of the article quoted and/or a brief reason this is currently being posted to Lemmy. When it’s just a link, the cynical part of me thinks it’s just an SEO bot—especially if the account never posts any comments. What are some ways to encourage posts that are more engaging? Or should I just ignore, downvote, and/or block those doing this kind of posting?
edit: Thank you to all who answered! I’m amazed at how many ways you came up with to answer this.
I have a computer running what I think at the time was called Ubuntu Server (no GUI) that I installed Xfce on, making it essentially Xubuntu. I did this because it allowed me to use `mdadm` to set up RAID (4 drives; RAID 5) _during_ the OS install. My OS lives on an NVME drive, and I have my raid mounted at /Files. I have lots of data in my RAID, and much (but not all!) is backed up to the cloud. There would be both emotional issues and lots of time required to fix things if I lose the RAID or the data on it. (I am realizing as I write this that I put off upgrading so long, I can probably copy all the data to one 20TB drive (oof! That’s expensive) since they’ve gotten about as big as my 21.83TB volume.) How safe is it to take the OS up on this offer? ``` New release '20.04.6 LTS' available. Run 'do-release-upgrade' to upgrade to it. ``` How hard is it to reestablish the RAID if it forgets it exists? Is there anything else I can do to make this more likely to “just work”? (Like: don’t do it over ssh) Are there other factors I am not thinking of?

I have two complaints about Firefox Focus on iOS: First, when typing into the address bar, you must finish and tap “search” or “go” or else all you typed will go away if you switch to another app and back again. Firefox Focus shouldn’t forget what you’re doing unless you hit the garbage can icon or force close the app. Second, if you’re typing, and you tap anywhere I’ve marked in red in the screenshot, it erases the search/url text you’ve typed, and you have to start over. It didn’t used to do this when Firefox Focus first came out. It would be fine to put a garbage can icon somewhere in that area, but the area now that deletes what you’re typing is _bigger than the keyboard_, and I’ve mis-tapped there way too many times.

I peeled it off, and there is no reside on the item, nor did was there any damage to the label. I had to stick it back down on each side to get the photo, but it pealed right back off in perfect condition again. If this can be done, why aren’t all labels like this?

I used https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/pc-gaming/how-to-install-windows-on-steam-deck to set up Windows-To-Go for a few games that won't work in SteamOS. It seems to be working fine, but now I wonder if this would work… I currently have a 1 terabyte SD card that I'm using for SteamOS. I know Linux partitions can be shrunk, so I'd like to shrink it down to half the size. Then I'd clone the partition(s) from the Windows-To-Go SD card to the now-empty space on the 1 terabyte SD card. I think I''ll need to clone the Windows partition(s) to the beginning of the drive. So when I make the empty space by shrinking the Linux partition, I'll create the empty space at the beginning of the drive. I'll be using GParted and Clonezilla since I'm used to them. I have two questions: - Will Windows care that the second half of the SD card has a LInux partition? I don't want/need it to see or read/write to the Linux partition. - Will SteamOS still see the Linux partition automatically as if nothing's changed and just ignore the new Windows partition(s)?
