NYPD shot four people - including two bystanders one who is in critical condition - and another cop over a $2.90 fare. www.nbcnewyork.com

Police opened fire on a subway platform in Brooklyn during a confrontation with an alleged fare-beater, striking the man cops said was armed with a knife, two straphangers caught in the fray, and one of the firing officers, NYPD officials said Sunday. One of those two passengers hit by the cops' bullets, a 49-year-old man, was hospitalized in critical condition after he was hit struck in the head, according to the NYPD. The two officers who opened fire were assigned to patrol the Sutter Avenue subway stop in the 73rd precinct when they spotted a man skip the station turnstile and walk through an open gate toward the train platform, Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey explained at an evening press conference from Brookdale Hospital.

China rams Philippine ship while 60 Minutes on board; South China Sea tensions could draw U.S. in www.cbsnews.com

**_An escalating series of clashes in the South China Sea between the Philippines and China could draw the U.S., which has a mutual defense treaty with the Philippines, into the conflict._** A 60 Minutes crew got a close look at the tense situation when traveling on a Philippine Coast Guard ship that was rammed by the Chinese Coast Guard. [China has repeatedly rammed Philippine ships](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/china-philippines-conflict-could-involve-us-60-minutes-transcript/) and blasted them with water cannons over the last two years. There are ongoing conversations between Washington and Manila about which scenarios would trigger U.S. involvement, Philippine Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro said in an interview. "I really don't know the end state," Teodoro said. "All I know is that we cannot let them get away with what they're doing." **China as "the proverbial schoolyard bully"** China claims sovereignty over almost all of the South China Sea, through which more than $3 trillion in goods flow annually. But in 2016, **an international tribunal at the Hague ruled the Philippines has exclusive economic rights** in a 200-mile zone that includes the area where the ship with the 60 Minutes team on board got rammed. China does not recognize the international tribunal's ruling.

Chief justice Roberts pushed for quick immunity ruling in Trump’s favor – report www.theguardian.com

***Chief justice reportedly took unusually active role in three recent supreme court decisions centering on Trump*** John Roberts Jr used his position as the US supreme court’s chief justice to urge his colleagues to rule quickly – and in favor – of Donald Trump ahead of the decision that granted him and other presidents immunity for official acts, according to a [New York Times investigation](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/15/us/justice-roberts-trump-supreme-court.html) published on Sunday. The new report provides details about what was happening behind the scenes in the country’s highest court during the three recent supreme court decisions centering on – and generally favoring – the Republican former president. Based on leaked memos, documentation of the proceedings, and interviews with court insiders, the Times report suggests that Roberts – who was appointed to the supreme court during Republican George W Bush’s presidency – took an unusually active role in the three cases in question. And he wrote the majority opinions on all three.

Data center emissions likely 662% higher than big tech claims. Can it keep up the ruse? www.theguardian.com

Big tech has made some big claims about greenhouse gas emissions in recent years. But as the rise of artificial intelligence creates ever bigger energy demands, it’s getting hard for the industry to hide the true costs of the data centers powering the tech revolution. According to a Guardian analysis, from 2020 to 2022 the real emissions from the “in-house” or company-owned data centers of Google, Microsoft, Meta and Apple are likely about 662% – or 7.62 times – higher than officially reported. Amazon is the largest emitter of the big five tech companies by a mile – the emissions of the second-largest emitter, Apple, were less than half of Amazon’s in 2022. However, Amazon has been kept out of the calculation above because its differing business model makes it difficult to isolate data center-specific emissions figures for the company. As energy demands for these data centers grow, many are worried that carbon emissions will, too. The International Energy Agency stated that data centers already accounted for 1% to 1.5% of global electricity consumption in 2022 – and that was before the AI boom began with ChatGPT’s launch at the end of that year. AI is far more energy-intensive on data centers than typical cloud-based applications. According to Goldman Sachs, a ChatGPT query needs nearly 10 times as much electricity to process as a Google search, and data center power demand will grow 160% by 2030. Goldman competitor Morgan Stanley’s research has made similar findings, projecting data center emissions globally to accumulate to 2.5bn metric tons of CO2 equivalent by 2030. ...

Race is on to produce a super-coral to survive world’s warming seas www.theguardian.com

It is one of the least understood processes in nature. How do two very different species learn to live with each other and create a bond, known as symbiosis, which can give them a powerful evolutionary advantage? Coral reefs are the most spectacular manifestations of symbiosis – and understanding the mechanics of this mutual endeavour has become an urgent task as global warming has triggered the widespread collapse of reefs across the planet. In a bid to halt this destruction, an international group of researchers led by the Wellcome Sanger Institute is working together on the Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics (ASG) project. Powerful DNA sequencers are now unravelling the genetic secrets of coral, data that could be vital in saving the world’s reefs, and understanding the mysterious processes that drive symbiosis.

Boeing bosses are staring down the barrel. The twists and turns of the past week paint a picture of managers badly wrong-footed by the depth of fury among workers who tossed out a 25% pay rise deal and launched strike action. "They probably didn't think that we had enough people for the strike," Kushal Varma, a Boeing mechanic, told Reuters. "But this is a movement of people who are willing to put their livelihoods on the line to get what's fair."

“We Must Act”: Sanders Demands DOJ, FBI Probe Israel’s Killing of Aysenur Eygi truthout.org

> In [a long statement](https://www.sanders.senate.gov/press-releases/news-sanders-calls-for-justice-department-to-open-independent-investigations-into-attacks-on-american-citizens-by-israeli-security-forces/) released Friday, Sanders said that the Biden administration is on the wrong path if it truly wishes for “full accountability” for Eygi’s killing in the occupied West Bank, as President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have called for. He called on the Department of Justice and the FBI to open their own independent investigations into the attack and the many others in which Israel has killed American citizens. > “Let’s be clear: there will be no accountability if the United States defers to the extremist Israeli government to investigate its own actions,” Sanders said. > The senator directly refuted Biden and Harris’s [false claims that Eygi’s killing was an accident](https://truthout.org/articles/outrageous-biden-slammed-for-saying-israel-killed-aysenur-eygi-by-accident/), and pointed out numerous incidents in the past two years in which Israeli forces have killed Americans with “no accountability” for their deaths. > Indeed, as many advocates for Palestinian rights have pointed out in recent days, Israeli forces have killed [at least five Americans](https://truthout.org/articles/blinken-says-israels-killed-2-americans-in-west-bank-its-killed-5-since-2021/) in the occupied West Bank since Biden took office, including 17-year-olds Tawfiq Ajaq and Mohammad Khdour; Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh; retiree Omar Assad; and now, Eygi. Is ‘Judge Judy’ on the Supreme Court? Lack of civics knowledge leads to colleges filling the gap https://apnews.com/article/civics-education-college-citizens-704d8abe56c0fc9b2c9a35187dacdc99

On the first day of his American National Government class, Prof. Kevin Dopf asks how many of his students are United States citizens. Every hand shoots up. “So, how did all you people become citizens?” he asks. “Did you pass a test?” “No,” one young woman says tentatively. “We were born here.” It’s a good thing. Based on his years of making his students at the University of South Carolina Beaufort take the test given to immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship, most would be rejected. Most states require some sort of high school civics instruction. But with surveys showing that a third of American adults can’t name the three branches of the federal government, and one in which 10% of college graduates think Judith Sheindlin – TV’s “Judge Judy” – serves on the U.S. Supreme Court, many think we should be aiming higher.

Walgreens to pay $106M to settle allegations it submitted false payment claims for prescriptions https://apnews.com/article/walgreens-settlement-prescriptions-never-dispensed-justice-department-493133ef568870a171338850a3b59110

Walgreens has agreed to pay $106 million to settle lawsuits that alleged the pharmacy chain submitted false payment claims with government health care programs for prescriptions that were never dispensed. The settlement announced on Friday resolves lawsuits filed in New Mexico, Texas and Florida on behalf of three people who had worked in Walgreens’ pharmacy operation. The lawsuits were filed under a whistleblower provision of the False Claims Act that lets private parties file case on behalf of the United States government and share in the recovery of money, the U.S. Justice Department said. The pharmacy chain was accused of submitting false payment claims to Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health care programs between 2009 and 2020 for prescriptions that were processed but never picked up. In a statement, Walgreens said that because of a software error, the chain inadvertently billed some government programs for a relatively small number of prescriptions that patients submitted but never picked up.

Florida hospitals ask immigrants about their legal status. Texas will try it next https://apnews.com/article/immigration-hospitals-florida-texas-desantis-abbott-21faed1d4d1b984ea3557d09f22dab9d

For three days, the staff of an Orlando medical clinic encouraged a woman with abdominal pain who called the triage line to go to the hospital. She resisted, scared of a 2023 Florida law that required hospitals to ask whether a patient was in the U.S. with legal permission. The clinic had worked hard to explain the limits of the law, which was part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ sweeping package of tighter immigration policies. The clinic posted signs and counseled patients: They could decline to answer the question and still receive care. Individual, identifying information wouldn’t be reported to the state. “We tried to explain this again and again and again, but the fear was real,” Grace Medical Home CEO Stephanie Garris said, adding the woman finally did go to an emergency room for treatment.

On Sunday, in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Vance admitted that **he and Donald Trump made up a baseless and racist story about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio**. “If I have to create stories so that the American media actually has to pay attention to the suffering of American people, then that’s what I’m going to do,” said Vance, a U.S. Senator representing Ohio. Ironically, Vance’s attempt to point out imagined “suffering” has led to actual suffering by his own constituents.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine says baseless claims about Haitian immigrants are 'garbage' www.nbcnews.com

A state’s experience with grocery chain mergers spurs a fight to stop Albertsons’ deal with Kroger https://apnews.com/article/kroger-albertsons-merger-washington-lawsuit-4977ceda820d84bee60b967e4bb339ec

Lawyers for Washington state will have past grocery chain mergers – and their negative consequences – in mind when they go to court to block a proposed merger between Albertsons and Kroger. The case is one of three challenging the $24.6 billion deal, which was announced nearly two years ago. The Federal Trade Commission is currently fighting the merger in federal court in Oregon, where closing arguments are expected Tuesday. Colorado has also sued to block the merger. But if the merger goes through, Washington residents would feel the impact more than the people of any other state. Albertsons and Kroger own more than 300 grocery stores in the state and control more than half of grocery sales there.
