Just from my small brain viewpoint, the owner hasn't sold the house or anything, so they shouldn't be taxed, and rent income is already taxed, so if they're using it to rent, this might trickle down to increase rent costs. Although, on the other hand. This only affects the ultra rich, so maybe they have it coming to them.

Just with my fam so ideally like 50 miles of range for example, but obviously, the wider the range, the better. I know there are repeaters and stuff but I don't really know how well they work and if that's the best option for this type of thing.

My main issue with 2 way and ham radio is they don't go that far. Say I'm like 50 miles away. A whole state away or something. What's the best form of emergency communication? Emergency satellite communicator I recall you have to pay some subscription fee right? Additionally, if phone lines are down, you can't expect the other person to receive that message on their phone.

I would say find something to do. Hobbies, events, anything. Recently I've actually looked for stuff to do and have some advice: check out Meetup, Eventbrite, look for County events, City events calendar, comedy clubs (costs money), Standup comedy places (free), open mic nights, check out volunteering opportunities, also check out community college classes and events I know I've found some lifelong friends at community college. I've also found geocaching to be a fun activity, you might meet some new friends doing it.

You sound exactly like my friend. But he would probably say stick to thinkpads
So I was out with my friend today and we had nothing planned. So I would like to ask y'all to suggest activities and just little adventures you guys would do. List of things we did: - Searched online of things to do in our county and found some cool activities. Ended up going to a vietnamese lantern festival thing - Geocaches - Wandered around in a park because of geocaching - Tasting of water from the water fountain at the park
I emailed Geocaching support asking if they could give me a free trial to see if it was worth it. They responded like right away giving me a code for a free week trial but it was attached to a year subscription ($40). I subscribed anyways because I guess it's not too bad and I might be able to cancel it if I don't want it. So far, I will keep it since it unlocked a few geocaches around Cal Poly Pomona and at parks near my area. So for me, it's worth it, especially when it encourages me to to outside and touch some grass.
Interviewing for a part time internship for Entry Level IT. I am a full time student Comp Sci major and wanna go into networking, servers, security, so hopefully this gets me my foot in the door. I am a terrible soft skills person and really nervous. My friends told me to print out my resume and transcripts, I will surely do that. Anybody got anything else to suggest? Update: I got the position! I honestly didn't even prepare for it, didn't even know what the company did. The comment that talked about learning to search things up was right on, they asked me what I would do if I didn't know how to do something. I answered "looking things up, asking others, and consult documentation." The company seemed really cool and is structured pretty much like Valve Corp in that they wanted jacks of all trades and it was company owned. Thank you for all the helpful advice. It definitely helped me out, and hopefully, it helps others out as well.
So far I've come across a really cheap $2, 80 sheet notebook on [Walmart](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pen-Gear-Dot-Ruled-1-Subject-Notebook-8-5-x-10-White-80-Sheets/128731410?from=/search). However, I wouldn't want to support them. I might have to buy it though, if nothing else is within this range. I have tried a set of high quality notebooks like $15 for 2 notebooks on Amazon but I found them too be too high quality for my liking. The paper is too smooth, cover too nice, generally not beat upable without me not feeling bad about it.
Didn't know where else to post this but figured I would just leave it here. Hopefully I can get some kind of job with this.
Not too long ago, I did a geocache and the FTF was a tag from the owner's late grandfather from the Apollo missions or something I forget. Thought that was pretty neat.
The geocaching is pretty bad around the campus. Only 5 on campus. Been around the UCI area since I'm in OC and it's vastly different. Wonder why. Sure there's less people but I'm sure some of us still play geocache around here? I wonder why.
I have a huge bag of filament waste. Where should I send this? I know it is only commercially recyclable in like very specific cases so stuff like PLA will almost never be recycled. However, I do hear of companies accepting filament and they sell back the rolls and stuff. I'm not looking to make a profit or anything, just gotta get this off of me and I want the most sustainable way to do so.
When SimpleLogin merged with Proton, proton unlimited members are able to use SimpleLogin premium for free. Is that the case for Standard Notes? I haven't figured out a way to do this.
I'm starting out with a cheap Mo Fang Ge brand cube but it's pretty stiff for my taste. I saw some videos about speedcubes and how you can adjust them and all that, thought it was neat. What are some good cubes out there? I would want to avoid any Chinese brand cubes if possible because cheap and Chinese probably means their workers aren't fairly compensated. Edit: after much research, I don't think a non-chinese brand cube will be possible. So I guess recommend me whatever the best options are. From the $10-20 range would be a good price for me.
Fastest was 4:17. I'm trying to match it Learned how to do it w/ video yesterday using jperm's 10 min tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ron6MN45LY Edit: I'll post my cube tmr if someone reminds me.
I know Florida, Texas, and other counties have tried and succeeded to ban books, I wonder how that is even legal since we have the first amendment. I tried doing research on this since Huntington Beach is banning books and people were petitioning against that at the main library. I made a little post asking people to petition on the Orange County [sub](https://lemm.ee/post/33556616).
Are there any good resources for helping someone getting into Linux? One of my friends I never thought would get into Linux is asking me for help. He specifically is an advanced Windows power user. I also had someone who was a complete noob, even to Windows. For the noob, I suggested LMDE and Kubuntu and they've been having some issues installing LMDE. For the power user, I suggested the easy distros such as lmde, kubuntu, nobara but also told them if they wanted to jump into the deep end, arch is cool. However, my suggestions don't even cover DEs, WMs or what they even are. I just wish there was a good guide out there. I think that's the biggest hurdle, so many options and not knowing what to pick.

So since the beginning of the semester I noticed the professor says "jess" and "wait for iiiiit", after class today, I confronted him and asked if he's ever watched a show called "Psych". He said he does and told him it's my favorite show. One of the other students said they did also and they're gonna get a blue car like in the show. This is the first time seeing someone in the wild that likes Psych, it's pretty cool.
From to school to school it could either be in the Engineering college or Science college. Some say it's a Math. Is having it in a different college going to affect how you're going to be taught? I'm going to Cal Poly Pomona and comp sci there is located in the college of science but at Cal State Long Beach it's in the college of engineering. Does this matter and how?
So I'm looking for ThinkPad alternatives, so far I've see repairable laptops like the Framework laptop and the Tuxedo linux laptops. What other choices do I have if I want a tough, reliable, and utilitarian computer?
I see posts talking about good BIFL items but I don't hear much about the other side of products that are bad or products you bought but don't even use.
So the thing with Debian and any Debian based distro like Ubuntu or Linux Mint is there is no big centralized software repo like the AUR. Yes there is the apt repository but if you want something that's not in there, get ready to read the documentation or follow random guides. For example, one of my friends wanted to download an audio tool called Reaper. On Windows this is just looking up the application and clicking on the .exe. It really depends on the dev if they include a .deb, sometimes you might need to download the .sh file or they may tell you to compile it yourself. Perhaps, you have to add a ppa. On Arch, all I have to do is Paru -S Reaper, if there are multiple Reapers I can look for that by typing Paru Reaper. Now that Arch is so easy to install with the Archscript, and the software repo so vast and easy to use, is Debian really user friendly if you have to jump through several hoops to download programs? Edit: yeah yeah there's flathub and stuff but that's more of a last resort, optimally, you want to get it the correct way.
Alright. What's the lore behind all the jean memes?
There's a cool government program that trains and gets people jobs. They give people Housing, Basic Medical Care, Meals, Books, an Allowance, Clothing, and a Network of instructors and peers. It targets low-income young adults ages 16 through 24. Check it out, share it around to people who need it. It seems pretty unknown. https://www.jobcorps.gov/

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with any of these companies, just a guy trying to get his data removed online. My last post on here I asked for advice on how to remove my information or just straight up not use my physical home address and instead maybe a p.o box. After all the feedback I got, I decided that it wasn't going to be possible. Also, it might not even be the bank that leaked my information but my government. Doesn't matter too much to me but it got leaked in the first place. As I looked at my data online I noticed that every one of my family member also had their info leaked, so it very well could be the government voting and dmv databases needing to have public records. So knowing this, that every citizen needed to have their info leaked online, what can I do about it? So there's pretty much one option, opt out and request data removals. Now I'm too lazy to go through the sites and request opt outs for each of them. So I decided to look at paid services that do this. So far I had DeleteMe, Incogni, Optery, Norton Privacy Assist, StackSocial, PrivacyBee, EasyOptOuts, etc. Who did I choose? After a lengthy time of searching, I chose [EasyOptOuts](https://easyoptouts.com) TLDR; They're $20 a year, do removals 4 times a year and they wiped my info in less than 24hrs so it's worth every penny to me. I wrote more about them in my [blog post](https://liluzibird.github.io/blog/2024/02/how-to-erase-your-information-online/) if you guys want to learn more.
I've heard of things like iPostal and Traveling Mailbox. Do these services allow you to register with bank, DMV, IRS, Voting, etc? How do they work? Would a normal P.O box using its physical address from USPS work? I've tried researching it and haven't gotten clear answers. I don't want to show up on those whitepages sites with all my information on them. I want to stop it from the start.
When he complained, rightwingers sent him homophobic taunts online. Black gay Republican podcaster Rob Smith has claimed that “white supremacist” members of his political party called him “fa**ot” and the n-word during his Sunday night attendance of Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest event in Phoenix, Arizona. Though Smith posted a video of his brief interaction with the aggressors, commenters on X (formerly Twitter) noted that the video didn’t feature the n-word and mocked Smith his membership in an anti-gay political party. “Last night in Phoenix, I was confronted and surrounded by some White Supremacists that don’t like gays or blacks in the Republican Party,” Smith wrote in a December 18 post on X. “They shouted ‘n****r’ and ‘f****t’ at me to make their point. However, I served in Iraq. I never back down. Ever.” https://lemmy.world/post/9812121
