CRISPR is possibly one of the most significant technologies invented this century lmao. It's a technique for inserting base sequences into DNA at targetable sites, the idea being that you can attach their expression to the expression of another sequence.

It enables making transgenic organisms reliably. You can actually like order sequences and do it at home with a little knowhow.

Have a read about it, it's truly one of the most exciting things of our lifetime.

In medicine there is a concept called "implied consent". Suppose you come across a human who is dying, they are not able to say that they would like you to save their life. You are assumed to have consent to try, assuming they have specifically not refused consent (e.g. through an advanced care directive) because there is the implication that they would prefer to live than die.

There is not really a good reason to apply this concept only to humans. For example, if you saw a train bearing down on an oblivious wombat moving the wombat off the tracks (or scaring them off or whatever) is obviously something you should try, despite generally having moral reservations about interfering in their life, because wombats generally aren't trying to commit suicide.

We can assume most abandoned animals that were formerly pets (or in entertainment industries or whatever) would like to go on living given that they continue to try staying alive. Although approaching that as ownership is definitely non-vegan, like if you take one into your life with a mindset that you can just stop caring for them or sideline their needs when inconvenient that is not vegan.

    They don't. Pets aren't vegan.

Adopting non-human animals that would otherwise be killed for lack of facilities to care for them is basically the only way a vegan can end up with individual custody. Even then, it's harm reduction and not ideal.

Sanctuaries with professional full-time staff are better, but there are mass graves everywhere full of non-humans that there were no spots in a sanctuary for.

You will probably need to sticky a post in each thread automatically as very few people read the sidebar. You also need to be prepared for deliberate trolls.

I had wondered about the utility of a bot that automatically acts on reports from a list of manually selected good users, which moderators review the actions of as reports whenever they're around. It's a fair bit of effort to set something like that up as a system and maintain it, but if mods aren't around dunk-cycles can tank productive discussions in a few minutes.

Reports also don't federate properly btw, less an issue for you but anyone you invite who isn't using a .world account won't ?always? see them.

dbzero is federates with both. They're honestly not bad. I think there's a bit of a moral panic around them because usaians aren't used to seeing anti-usa opinions be mainstream.

The one thread I saw on hexbear about Russia for example was people lamenting how horrible it is for lgbt people there. Expressing frustration and anger at Putin's regime, and expressing frustration at the role usa policy has played in his rise and the reactionary political culture there.

you might disagree with the degree to which the usa government is responsible but that hardly seems like a community where dissent against Putin is crushed.

Idk, at any rate the vegan communities are awesome. Mander is a good instance with good users, although I think it's natural science focused and unsure if it's appropriate for a vegan community. Dunno about the other.

Lemmy world vegan community - Future of community update

Hi all, I'm one of the mods that apparently caused lemmy.world to melt down for two weeks. It's a lovely sunny Sunday arvo, and I'd much rather go catch the last rays of sun in my garden than write about mod drama. Alas, I must have sinned in a past life. Today the lemmy.world admins made a follow up post about the incident where the admin Rooki interfered with moderation of this community in a way which was determined to be against lemmy.world TOS and factually incorrect. Throughout this incident there has been no communication with me, nor to my knowledge any of of the other moderators of this community. Rooki quitely undid his actions and edited his post to admit fault however there was no public acknowledgement of this from him. In fact I wasn't even told I was reinstated as a mod which is quite funny. The lemmy.world admins' response appears more focused on managing their own reputations and justifying similar actions in the future than providing a good environment for vegans, and other similarly maligned groups. Their statements about wanting to handle misinformation and overreach better in the future ring a bit hollow when they won't take actions to address the anti-vegan circlejerks under their update posts which abound with misinformation and disinformation. The legalese written basically allows for the same thing to happen, and that if it does the admin decision is to stand while moderators have to quietly resolve the conflict at the admins' leisure. Presumably with a similarly weak public apology and barely visible record correction after the fact. This community already has a fairly high moderation burden, with many users coming here in bad faith and getting outraged when they are told to take it elsewhere. I have spoken with /u/neurospice@lemmy.dbzer0.com and /u/Beaver@lemmy.ca and we are of the opinion that given the lack of assurance that admins with an axe to grind wont interfere in the future this is no longer a space we are interested in moderating and can't in good faith recommend as a place to host a vegan community. Instead we would recommend that users come to !vegan@vegantheoryclub.org (note, not federated with .world, make a local account), additionally !vegan@lemmy.ml, !vegan@slrpnk.net, and !vegan@hexbear.net are well moderated and run. Mods are just glorified internet janitors though, so if any current mods or users want to take over the responsibility of primary management from /u/neurospice@lemmy.dbzer0.com they are welcome to do so and should get in touch. Otherwise I think the consensus is to close this community for now. Finally I'd just like to express gratitude for the great effort put in by the users here. In particular /u/Rose@lemmy.world you are a bloody champion for trying to get a better outcome here, we all appreciate it immensely.

I mean pet food in general is absolute completely fucked. Like the standard kibble is awful, it contains random excess from animal ag (including, amusingly, a lot of plant matter), garbage from the grinding process including plastic, ash etc. It's bad stuff.

So the usual care and precautions apply, plus obviously it's early days and so you should be getting regular health checks. Of course you should be doing that anyway. Something that frustrates me a little in all this is that people act like everyone buying the random kibble and free feeding a cat is being responsible, but if that kibble was a different kibble it's suddenly abuse. That's basically just privileging that status quo, and nutritional inadequacies in "pet" diets are astonishingly common.

Anyway food allergies etc are a thing, so even if you were killing to feed a cat you should make any dietary changes carefully and slowly.

Well personally I do think we have a moral obligation to reduce harm and I don't see a good reason to privilege the life of one animal over another (humans included). Veganism as an ideology however is about what is practicable, and while it appears that cats can be transitioned it is very early days and can only be done responsibly if you are in a position to afford medical oversight and understand how to select correctly formulated foods.

As a vegan I am against pet keeping, but lots of abandoned animals exist and they need care there aren't institutions to provide so they end up in homes. I have a couple of rescue dogs living with me atm for example. In situations like this I think where possible we have a responsibility to juggle their needs and desires with broader harms. Like I don't let the dogs I care for hunt wildlife for fun, and give them enriching search games instead.

Abstracting away that death through food doesn't really change it.

But we're not insane, it's early days and while evidence suggests for cats its possible it isn't trivial and should be attempted responsibly, which nobody involved in this shitshow was claiming otherwise. The only people denying reality are the banned commentator who was saying that cats cannot survive on plant in the face of patient explanations by another user and the lemmy.world admin who tried to remove that user's comments in favour of the science denying ones.

This is fucked reporting right? The quote they use as evidence is her saying something is "in God's hands". Elsewhere articles are run using quotes of her praying to god. This is like, extremely normal lexicon for even casually religious people right? I'm an atheist with a pretty negative view of religion and to *me* this looks like pearl clutching. Lots of extremely normal people say "I am praying for guidance" when they're reflecting on something. That in isolation doesn't mean they expect a hedge to catch fire and tell them what to do... If our standard is pollies never mention religion then we might want to do some stuff about the Lord's prayer, the oaths, and the magical mace of the Royal cult.

Alt text can't be formatted. Have it here Things I've learned since going vegan - You can slice someone's throat and still love them. - The word "need" can also mean "could easily live without but do kinda want". - The word "humane" can mean literally anything you want it to. - It's ok to call people out for harmful behaviour unless that behaviour involves bacon. - Plants definitely feel pain and lawns scream when you mow them. - Crop workers are exploited but slaughterhouse workers definitely aren't. No exploitation here, no sir. - Meat is the only food that contains protein. - "Found the vegan" is still funny and original the millionth time. - Before humans came along, cows were just wandering around with massive udders praying for someone to invent industrialised agriculture. - Steak is cheaper than beans, rice, pasta, and canned vegetables. - While 99% of all meat comes from factory farms, no one eats that meat. - Everyone only buys local, organic, humane, Dalai Lama approved meat. - Everyone has an uncle who owns a farm straight out of a 1950's Americana magazine - Everyone has a degree in nutrition and evolutionary biology. - Everyone knows that one guy who went vegan and almost died. - Everyone is free to talk about their identity, beliefs and interests without being shamed for them. Unless they're vegan. Vegans can fuck off.

The premier's apology for harms to LGBT people is belied by their reluctance to take action on NSW's barbaric gender change policy.

NSW still requires surgeries that are often unwanted, complex, and have mixed results (particularly for ftm patients, unless they opt for steralisation instead which might count. mtf steralisation is mandatory), and tremendously expensive (not covered by medicare, in fact barely offered in australia at all especially for ftm people). Further if you are fortunate enough to be able to do this you are required to be inspected by two unrelated medical professionals. I went through that process and it was the most humiliating moment of my life. This policy is out of line with policy adopted by the federal government over a decade ago now, and is similar to policies previously enacted by Sweden and The Netherlands. Policies which they are currently apologising for and paying re-compensation to transgender people harmed by them. Having ID which identifies someone as transgender causes ongoing dysphoria which runs contrary to treatment recommended by health professionals while exposing someone to violence and discrimination. Chris Minns' words ring hollow when the state government continues to drag its feet on this front, despite support from the Greens and Alex Greenwich. While I'm glad for any of my comrades getting a sense of closure, to me this leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and appears another empty political stunt of pretty words without commitment to action.

So this slightly funny list from the guardian got me thinking: What in your opinion are good books to understand modern China?

So I came across this: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/apr/18/five-of-the-best-books-to-understand-modern-china and the headline piqued my interest but the books all seem of a rather particular slant. I am a fan of reading from a series of broad perspectives when trying to understand huge things and it's obviously a bit farcial to suppose the lives of 1.4 billion people are gripped by terror and pain in a country that somehow still chugs along. Since of everywhere on lemmy I think I'm likely to get some pretty interesting recommendations here, if we can do it without igniting the china good/bad flame war what books would you recommend to give insight into "understanding modern china". That is phenomenally broad and vague so I'm keen to see anything from histories to fiction. edit: thank you all for your opinions, I will endeavour to check most of them out and communicate my thoughts on them later. I'm especially interested in what the lives of boring arse people are like in different sectors of society (e.g. migrant underclass, party bureaucrate, officer worker, house wife, farmer etc) , if anything like that comes to mind.

Stage-three tax cuts: cabinet approves new cost-of-living relief for workers on less than $150,000 www.theguardian.com

Looks like a rather significant adjustment to the proposed cuts. Although still moving some beans around rather than dropping it. Rough back of the envelope stuff it seems like ~80-120k earners get the largest dollar cut, but it's more significant in terms of % income at the lower end. So workers in "professional" roles likely to see the biggest impact, still gonna be tough at the low end of town.

3d printed jig for assembling LED cube layers

Includes a little jig off the side to bend the leads regularly, and holds the LEDs in consistent orientation using the cathode cutaway on the rim. Designed by my lovely wife. btw It is food safe to drink coffee next to 3d printed parts nerds ;) P.S. this filament is awful, filamentium pla. The worst thing I've used since early reprap days when variability was high. Any ideas what's causing that "shadowing" between the holes? those parts printed last I think but at the same speed/ironing pattern etc as the more matte parts between.

pretty basic but I made myself a less mess espresso basket prep ring thing.

It'a detained by magnets so it doesn't get in the basket and interfere with spreading out the grounds. Needs a clean up with a lick of sandpaper, pretty stupid but these things cost like 50 bucks /shrug ![](https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/pictrs/image/205210c0-2378-40c1-90cd-fa6b023b9db9.jpeg) EDIT: appreciate all the concern for my health, it touches dry coffee grounds. I agree that if it got wet there'd be health problems but unless it gets real humid there's just no opportunity for decay. As for random leaching same diff, without heat and wet it's not really a concern. That said I probably will seal an improved design, this is just a test piece.

Echoing my post on masto: Does asafoetida smell amazing to you?

Does asafoetida smell amazing to you? and if yes do you consider yourself someone with an accurate sense of smell (e.g. identify if someone needs dental work in a conversation, smell who someone has been hanging out with, identify spices and herbs used in a meal with high accuracy, identify the perfume someone wears etc)

Diving back in after a hiatus. What's good fun in a Savage good biome?

Obviously giant creature war breeding is the goal. Any great candidates that are from good biomes for taming? Do cavern invaders still cause save corruption/become completely unmanageable? Also since it's been a long time I'm thinking of setting a lower population limit and taking my time. Do any of you have recommended settings for enemy invasions etc based in a ~50 dwarf cap?

I've gone with super terminal heavy setups for years. If I want to dip my toes into a more GUI oriented setup what's your rec?

I've got a refurbed thinkpad yoga in the mail. It's a stylus oriented laptop so I need to change the software I use to be more clicky. For years I've favoured stuff like netctl, xrandr, xbacklight etc etc over GUI alternatives and usually gone for very minimal WM setups (e.g. dwm). For obvious reasons this would be actual hell with a stylus in tablet mode, but it's been around 15 years since I last had a clicky linux setup and I'm really lost as to how to set one up on arch. What do you folks recommend for laptops? EDIT: update for wayward souls. Went with plasma, less works nicely out of the box but gnome hung occasionally on a 2019 yoga x1. There's a lot about plasma I would say is annoying but configuring it is vastly easier than gnome.

Share your warm up and your stretches? This is knowledge I can be trusted with

Silly title aside what do you do to warm up and if you do any stretching for mobility after a run what are they? I confess to being extremely lazy. My idea of a warm up is just running a bit easier than normal and the only stretch I do is foam roll my calves and stretch out the old hams on a wall. Every time I look up articles you get insane fitness blogs regurgitating the same 3 page "easy" routine that you absolutely must do all of or you will definitely die. So what do actual other human beings do? Come, share your wisdom or commiserate in haphazardness.

Share your techniques for maintaining motivation when recovering from injuries

I started running about a year ago. No specific goals just for fun, was making good progress till I got up to being able to run about 7 km 5 days a week no problem. Unfortunately a series of health problems lead to getting really out of condition and I'm dealing with some knee tendonitis due to irresponsibility when doing strength training. Now I'm gasping after 3 km and having to carefully pace myself to avoid aggravating the knee while I build it back up. On one hand I know that a lot of the long term adaption isn't totally gone, that I'm not starting from zero. When I started I would throw up after running a block. On the other hand it's demotivating as fuck putting in so much effort to hobble through stuff that recently was relaxing. I'm obviously not the first person or the last to deal with this so I'm asking if you could share times when you've dealt with recovering and what kept you going.

Inconsistent results with auto bed levelling. Creality ender 3 s1.

See attached photo for the results of the bed levelling test using superslicer's calibration test. This is using the uhhh mriscoc firmware after heating to thermal equilibrium, tramming to tolerance, doing a 9x9 mesh which found a high point at the super messed up bottom left corner (higher than tramming result? but slightly further out). I have M420 S1 in my custom gcode, and for insanity's sake checked the gcode of the part and it's in the custom block and start block. Any ideas what's going on? every other section is okay, although back right is a bit distant. EDIT 2023-07-11T08:27(UTC): So after some shenanigans the current findings are summarised as following: - Z travel speed during probing needs to be slow - multiple probing (3 samples) creates reproducible meshes and tramming wizard results - Trying to enable the mesh via `G29 A ; Activate UBL \n G29 L0 ; Load mesh in slot 0 \n G29 J ; Correct for skew` didn't seem to work. Replacing that whole block with `M420 L0 S1` makes the Z axis move during XY translation (from which I infer the mesh is loaded and being used correctly vs my printer is possessed) - The above would seem to me to indicate the marlin documentation is wrong? as it suggests using G29 L# and G29 A respectively. As of the time of update, that lower right corner is proving troubling, still. I *think* it's an issue with the location of the probe and interpolation results vs actual geometry of the bed. By that I mean, if we define down on your screen as positive X and right on your screen as positive Y the probe is located at `MX, -NY` vs the print head, thus the extreme location cannot be sampled. If the bed geometry is not smooth at that extreme then the automated fill in of my 9x9 grid might be wrong. I will attempt manually leveling that section and see if that helps EDIT the second: I'm going insane. Will take some photos in the morning but mesh values in the left front of the bed are wildly different from actual height. Building the mesh with the probe will report a sort of hill in the centre going to low corners, the front left will report something like -0.3mm (although the mesh display only shows -0.2 mm editing the value shows it's lower) but if I go into the edit mode and manually probe that location it'll crash into the bed hard. Setting it for light dragging on paper akin to the sort felt in the centre of the bed where values are accurate will have the mesh height at ~0.1 mm. A 0.3 mm difference? what the fuuuuuuuck? EDIT: 2023-07-13T08+00:00: I figured it out. Thanks for your advice and patience. I will add pictures of the meshes at various stages to this post at a later date to assist any other wanderer in madness in identifying and solving the same problem. In essence neither X or Y were square, the probe being offset in both X and Y created the problem. Because of the gantry construction it would be non trivial to square the XZ gantry to the Y axis so instead I verified that Y was not twisted and instead squared X to the best of my ability and precision tools. Then I printed this part: https://www.printables.com/model/255096-sprite-extruder-ender-s1-pluspro-cr-touch-mount-fo to which my eternal gratitude goes out to a Mr S Grindset for providing in order to move the probe to be colinear with the print head in X. Ensuring that any error due to Y not being square is even for the probe and print head. Now it is pretty good! Auto leveling works well enough to get "pretty even" layers, certainly none of the nasty ripples and ploughing I was experiencing.
