Upgrade did actually complete. pictrs had some issues but I think I fixed them (hopefully). Any issues let me know.

Lemmy once again needs upgrading. This time all components - pictrs, postgres and lemmy itself. This will mean that at least 1 of these (fragile) things will almost certainly break and leave the server down for some time. I will be investigating how best to unbreak the server over the next couple of weeks and post when we intend to do the update that inevitably will destroy the server in some way. If you use the server daily you may wish to create a secondary account so that you are not too disrupted when the update happens. Unfortunately upgrading lemmy is not as easy as one might hope so I cant tell you exactly what will happen ahead of time. I will post again when we have a general idea what to do with an intended date.

Hi there, Unfortunately the site was down for about 2 days over the 26-27 May this month. This was due to the datacentre we use being affected by a storm/tornado: (https://apnews.com/article/tornadoes-weather-texas-oklahoma-93001e1d81f120d0d55c8dfa24938250) which took out power to the facility for just under 2 days. At no time was there any risk of loss to the server due to off site backups, however we did have to wait for the centre to come back online. While this server is run extremely cheaply, at just $20 USD per month (approx) which includes paying for the compute, domain, email, and off site backup as well as object storage, it does mean that there is not redundancy when a site wide outage occurs. The low cost means that there is no risk of this server ever being unable to meet its costs and be paid for, but it does mean we sometimes can have an outage if a major event happens such as what happened and a delay before being brought back online. The decision for this was because this server is designed to help reduce load on the rest of the fediverse and does not store much local content so a couple days a year the server is out was deemed acceptable during the design phase. If you have any questions or comments feel free to post and I will try my best to answer them :) - P

Upgrade to 0.19.3 was completed with no issues today (from 0.19.1)

Just want to give everyone an apology for the downtime last few days. Its unfortunate that we were down around 18 - 20 hours in total and rest assured I have made improvements based in what happened to reduce this going forward. Its been 24h now since the upgrade to 0.19.1 and everything has remained stable so far. Hopefully thats the end of it. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all :) -P

Past 24h of images will be broken as I purged them from the database. Someone on lemmy.world was posting CSAM and to remove the images I simply removed the offending community and purged the last 24h of images so I dont have to go searching for them. New posts images will work as normal and the content of posts is unaffected, but if you want an image or thumbnail from the last 24h you will have to click through to the actual source of the post to see the image.

Upgraded to 0.18.4 when it was released as no major changes.

Cloudflare proxy is now running with Full (Strict) encryption and speed improvements along with the ddos protection. Apologies if you couldnt access the site for about 30 minutes while it got configured.

After upgrading to 0.18.3 email is not functioning. Temporarily I have had to turn this off, but if you lose oyur password it will not be possible to gain access until the bug is resolved. I have logged a bug on github, hopefully a solution can be found quickly. P

Will be working on the site later to improve the backup and there will be some downtime later for an hour or so while I work on it. P

Upgraded to 0.18.2 and RC1 for the UI due to the recent issues. Site was down for about 30 minutes during the update.

Due to the vulnerability in Lemmy being found I will be forced to upgrade today. Unsure exactly when and I am/will be making backups when I am able to plan out how to do the update. Apologies if the site is down when you need to use it. Will also be making new registrations harder while this is ongoing.

In a few days I will have to take the site down for a few hours. Will post when that will be as I know. Reason will be to take a backup and copy down all the site over the internet so that I can ensure the upgrade doesn’t mean I cant rollback if needed.

Will upgrade soon after planning and checking how others handle the upgrade. Will be in a few days time.

Hi all, Did some speed improvements to memory and CPU to try ensure that the instance remains fast as it gets bigger. As with all "improvements" sometimes the opposite outcome occurs so while it should be more optimized, let me know if it is not. CPU is currently hovering around 5% usage and memory is at about 20% so as far as I can tell nothing is under pressure. Traffic in and out is about 300KiB/s but I will continue to monitor. Database is only 1.6GB and Pictrs (thumbnails?) is 3.2GB so things are still small.

I started a lemmy instance at https://lemmy.myserv.one but find it hard to get people to join. The instance is just a way to help reduce the load on other lemmy servers like lemmy.world so one would think it would be desirable to join as its quite fast and simply makes the experience better without detracting from anyones favorite instance they already feel loyal to. Would be interesting to hear how other people find members to join. From a user perspective I understand that looking for the most popular server and joining there makes sense since then you are doing what everyone else did, so from that point of view I understand why everything gets piled up on just a few servers.

Server was updated to 0.18.0 today from 0.17.4. Took about 5 minutes.

If there is a community you want to subscribe to, then search the full url in the search box eg: search for "https://lemmy.world/c/apple_enthusiast" without quotes You may have to wait a few seconds then click the search button again as it has to retrieve the information from the other instance.
