What is this scene? I never watched Star Trek, but this image looks so funny out of context, but what's the scene about? I don't mind spoilers since it's so old anyways. I really want to watch Star Trek but not sure if it's really the type of stuff I'd like to watch. If your comment (the top-level one) was supposed to be sarcasm, you need a /s tag because there are people actually being serious saying that "it's a conspiracy, couldn't be any other possible explanation" stuff.
But also, the "hostage" thing is not entirely false, just very exaggerated. They only take your family "hostage" if you are like a leader of a protest or something. But I doubt they care if you are just some forum user that has no followers and "protesting" online. They got too many dissidents within their jurisdiction to care about those abroad.

Well I, as a former citizen of China, do "speak out" against CCP as in family discussions, in online forums, and sometimes with classmates in school, but I don't "speak out" as in actually participate in protests. Demonstrations just isn't my thing. Protesting against CCP gets you labeled a "race traitor". I mean honestly, with all the racial problems in the US, and having to deal with my abusive family, I really don't have to energy care about CCP anymore. It's dead to me. I view China just like how an anti-fascist German view Nazi Germany. There's no point of protests. It's beyond anything a protest can fix. Like... why do I even care, it isn't even my country anymore.
Edit: Also, it isn't a conspiracy that ethnic Chinese (I'm gonna use the term "ethnic Chinese" because this applies regardless of citizenship status) people don't "speak out". People just value "Social Harmony" more than being correct. Like if you live abroad, why care about what happens back in China? Most ethnic Chinese people who lives abroad don't really feel welcome in their new country, so why be against your former country if you aren't even sure if you are actually safe in your new one? You don't end up in a situation where you have no safe harbor in the world. Ethnic Chinese people living abroad believe China will accept them again in-case their living situation abroad goes south, so they don't want to get on the bad side of the Chinese government. Like what happened with the Chinese Exclusion act in the US more than 100 years ago, and also the Japanese Internment Camps. Maybe you disagree with the thought process, but that is what most ethnic Chinese people think.

But will congress enforce the rules? By enforce, I mean using the power of Impeachment and voting to convict under said Article(s) of Impeachment. Otherwise, any rules are pointless. A president can only be prosecuted after leaving office, how do prosecute a sitting supreme court justice who serves for life? Even if you did, they'd still be a sitting justice that can rule from prison since criminal conviction =/= impeachment conviction, and I'd imagine the case could go up to the very court that he/she sit in, and it only takes 4 of their collegues plus their own vote to overturn their own conviction.
In this political climate, it's practically impossible to convict a justice under the impeachment procedure.

One of the major problems with TV that I've noticed is that you can have a great premise and great starting season, then the show gets cancelled for some stupid reason. I often find movies to have higher quality than TV. What do you think?

Before you tell me to touch grass, grass is kinda illegal here in the US (if you know what I mean by "grass" 😉).
Okay so for context: I've never really downloaded movies right after release, the movies that I've downloaded were all released at least few months before the time of download, so I don't know how movies releases work. So when a movie is released, how long does it take for there to be a high-quality pirated version of it? I can't seem to find the movie on an online platform even if I were to pay for it. Are movies exclusive to an actual theater when they first get released? Right now I'm searching for that movie that was just released and all I find is HDCAMs. Does this mean that someone just secretly recorded it in a theater? Oh btw, the movie I'm talking about is about a scientist that was involved in (at the time) a secret government weapons program during WW2. The movie was released very recently. (Hey, I didn't mentioned the name of the movie, I hope I'm not breaking the rules 😉)
Who determines who owns a domain name? International organization? Do unrecognized countries also get their own top-level domain? If someone or some organization wanted to register a website for highly illegal activities (terrorism, crime organizations, etc) who has the authority to shut them down? Does one government has the authority, or does it require a majority of the countries? What if, say, North Korea hosted a website advocating terrorism? Who can take that down?

I mean, a state that is forseeing a election which an opponent party will likely win, could just pass a law *before* the election that says "The state legislature shall have the sole authority of appointing electors to the electoral college for elections of president and vice president" and if they have an already gerrymandered state legislature, they could cling to power with like 40%, or maybe even less, of the votes and have a trifecta in the state, electoral votes are practically permanently voting for the party. They could even change how governors are selected by making them to also be appointed by legislature, further solidifying their power. Why haven't some states just gone full authoritarian? I mean, the federal government couldn't do anything about such states if this were to happen, due to federalism.

Why? Because if the item turns out to be damaged or missing, you'll have an easier time when attempting to dispute charges with seller or financial institution. Not just for packages, but any thing you buy at a store, you should just film yourself when opening them so you have evidence in case anything goes wrong. Also secondary LPT related to this topic: In some countries (in the USA at least), using a credit card has better consumer protections than a debit card. Just make sure to pay off the balance at the end of the month so you don't incur interest.
I just got my package of new earphones from Best Buy, and the box was fucking empty. I mean there is the box and instruction manuals and charging cable, but the actual earphones aren't there. They've used Shipt (which is like a doordash but for packages) but the box was inside another layer of packaging which was supposedly sealed before the delivery person got it so I'm leaning towards it being store employee theft, or someone returned an empty box and the employees didn't verify it. I'll be contacting Bestbuy and Credit Card issuer as soon as customer support hours start. I've literally never lost a package, I'm just so, annoyed. The money will probably be back, but like dude I just wanna listen to some music. Ugh... I guess phone speakers will have to do for now. PSA: Record a video when opening packages just in case you need to file a dispute. I didn't but I don't think there's gonna be an issue since these things rarely happen to me and disputes are rarely filed. So have you ever been defrauded? Update: I used the customer support chat and told BestBuy about it, and they gave me a replacement, this time I picked it up at the store and opened the box right in front of the employee just to be safe. Nothing was missing this time. 😀

I've been depressed for a long time and to my parents, either you're fine and depression is just being dramatic, or your completely insane and you'll get kicked out, there's no in between. Alright I'm just gonna eat unhealthy food, not excercise. Maybe I can get some sympathy if a get a "real" illness like diabetes. I doubt it tho, they're just gonna blame me for wasting their money. I woke up this morning feeling some weird pain in my fingers, I thought *ugh, just one of these days isn't it*. Then as I scrolled through lemmy, I accidentally bumped my phone against the area where my finger was hurting, and felt a sharp pain. Then I looked. THERE WAS A FUCKING PIECE OF HAIR INSIDE MY SKIN!!! Fucking triggered my OCD and I spend the last 30 minutes getting that hair out, first with my fingernails, then I found tweezers and keep trying to pull it out. It fucking hurt as hell. Finally got it out just around 10 minutes ago, and then spend 5 minutes washing the area just to make sure there's no infection. I fucking hate random pieces of hair AHHHH. I wanna scream.
