    No worries!

It does seem like a good connector design. I have no issues with the connector itself really, just the inadequate placement of it on the device.

So, if I'm browsing my feed and I click on a post is there some way for me to view that community's side bar information without leaving the post?

I like the command palette, but it didn't seem very apparent though. If you hadn't told me about it, I don't know that I would've discovered it on my own.

In regards to photon, it does look pretty sleek. I think I still like Alexandrite better though. Could I ask why not that one instead?

Something that I noticed pretty quickly is that Photon's sidebars seem to be static. When I have the window in a split screen view, there doesn't seem to be any way to view them. Am I missing something?

I can see the merits of that approach, but I still think it could've been done better though. USB-C with a silicone plug still would've been my preference, personally.

Or, it could've just been designed so that it can sit flat when the charger is connected. Seems like such an obvious oversight to me. Lol

    bone conduction headphones

I purchased these 'Shokz' brand headphones a while back (openrun pro model), let's discuss: I got them to fufill a specific need, to provide better situational awareness at work. The wireless earbuds that I'd been using previously do not provide adequate hearing protection and also the design can be problematic too, in certain settings. It's a wonder I haven't lost or damaged them already, and I know several co-workers that have done precisely that; it's a pretty common issue. Banded headphones then, seemed like a logical alternative. They are much easier to handle, and also allow me to use earplugs if I need to. If you've never tried them before, it's like some kind of third dimension being able to simultaneously hear external and internal audio. It's a pretty cool and novel experience. # **Compliments:** -excellent battery life (pro model) -quality materials and finish -fast charging -portability -novel tech is great for niche applications # **Critiques:** -comfort and fitment, non-adjustable, 'one size fits all' (transducer modules have sub-optimal vibrational transferrence because of poor positioning/retention/adjustment capabilities) -limited hardware buttons -awkwardly shaped hardcase -proprietary magnetic charger (bad placement makes them not sit flat when charging) **-Comfort/fitment:** I've noticed an issue in that the transducer modules do not sit flat against my face. They have a slight tilt that causes them to sit a bit inward at the top and outward at the bottom. If I press the modules so that they are slightly more flat against my face where they should be, the difference in quality is pretty substantial. They have what I would say is a kind of rigid flexibility to them, which causes them to kind of sit just how they want to, which may or may not be how you need them to sit for optimal quality. Being critical, I definitely notice this lack of precision fitment. **-Limited hardware buttons** There's three buttons for control. One button on the left side for play/pause (takes some getting used to for predominantly right-handed users, which is an odd design choice in my opinion), and two buttons on the bottom right side behind the ear for volume up/down and power on/off (the volume up button dual functions as the power on/off). The better design would've been symmetrical buttons on both transducers. The designers went with form over function here, which is annoying because it causes a lack of functionality/usability. Controls are not customizable either. -one click = pause/play -two clicks = advance -three clicks = previous **-Awkwardly shaped hardcase** Honestly, I'm not even sure that a hardshell case is needed for this product because I think they are pretty resilient on their own, but I do appreciate that they included one. The nitpick that I have is that it's this weird wedge type of shape that is slippery and doesn't really fit good anywhere. The design of it just makes me not want to carry it around this way. It would be better if it was more of a standard shape and if it had some rubber grip to it too. If it had implemented charging too, it could've been very useful and practical. **-Proprietary magnetic charger** Firstly, there's no excuse for not using USB-C at this point. Come on people... Secondly, the placement is (still) terrible. I don't know how it was before the updated model that I have, but this one is quite annoying. When you connect the charger, you can't really place them in a way that doesn't cause them to flop around a bit. Upside down or rightside up, it doesn't matter, charging is an awkward experience when it definitely didn't have to be. # **Design speculation and improvement:** **-New output protocol** Simultaneous output/device synchronization: -I don't know how difficult or feasible this would be, but my idea is for the device to be able to be used simultaneously with other devices. For instance: if I have my bone conduction headphones connected to my phone and I decide to go for a ride in my vehicle, the output from my phone could go to both devices at the same time, thus allowing me to hear and feel the media. This would add a new level of immersion to the experience. Maybe certain channels/frequencies could be optimized between the multiple devices as well, e.g., voices could come through the bone conduction device and bass could come from the other sources. **Adaptive Modifications** -Threadded wrappings on the parts that go over the ears to compensate for the shortcommings of physical design (small guage paracord or twine). Some added thickness in this particular spot may allow the modules to sit flatter, thus increasing audio clarity. Potentially, a stylish and intuitive fix. -3D printed spacer clip or something similar. My skills here are limited, but I know it could be a potential fix. **Alternative design for banding** -Adjustable metal headbands of yore (think 90's style on-ear headphones) -Independant transducer modules (synchronized with each other the same way that wireless earbuds do) could be implemented into a type of silicone headband. Something that wraps around the head or ears and allows a comfortable and proper placement.

Could be, but I kind of feel like the protocol might be close enough and that it just needs the right implementation. I think Kbin almost had it, but just needed more refinement.

I'm definitely excited for bonfire though, seem like it's got tons of potential!

Both of those reasons are valid. I think a lot of people are noticing general difficulties and lack of seamless interoperability between the platform types, which definitely makes it hard to choose where is the most opportune place to be on. If there is a platform that does it better, I bet people will start to notice.

I'm just going to copy a comment, because it looks like the crosspost didn't update the edit from the original post...

    Copied comment:

buyitforlife is a fantastic community, but I’m not sure it fits what I’m talking about because it’s kind of specific to exclusive products that are meant to last. I’m imagining something that’s covers a more broad range of products. Stipulations might include things like:

    -reviews

    -design speculation

    -improvements

    -collaboration

    -development

    -creation

    -also, no sponsored/commercialized products!

(development and creation are super ambitious, but I’d like to include them just because)

I’m very analytical about product design, especially when it comes to electronics and technology, and I like to imagine ways that things could work better or be designed better. I just think it would be cool to have a place to discuss things like that. I also feel like it can be difficult to trust reviews that come from one source, so having a federated collection to start building might be a really useful resource

That's kind of why I think there would need to be certain rules like 'no sponsored content'

I'd like it to be for products that people like, but maybe just need some help being improved (or just having fun speculating about how it could be better maybe).

I'm thinking generally about electronics, because I like tech stuff, but I don't see a reason to limit it to just that category. The idea of a federated review system is kind of what I'm getting at, with the posibility of encompassing things like design, collaboration, speculation for ways to improve, (repairability would be a great thing to cover as well, but I'm not extrememly savvy when it comes to repair!)

I think that a federated library of product reviews/discussions could be a great resource.

    Recommendations for 510 battery

Hey so I have one of ![these](https://slrpnk.net/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Frandys.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2022%2F12%2FInspo-Opened-with-included-Sand-Quartz-Atomizer.jpg) I've run into an issue recently where one of the cartridges that I purchased for it doesn't fit properly (the cartridge in question has a flat mouthpiece that is longer than the normal round versions, and when you screw it all the way in it doesn't line up exactly flat to allow the case to fit over it). That's disappointing. I didn't realize this would even be an issue or something that I should have to look out for. It still works (mostly), but I think I'm also getting a lot of air in the draw as well which definitely affects the quality/useability. So, all that being said, I think I'd like to get something that's a bit better quality and possibly more universal design. I like the pocket-able design of the current model and the fact that it's discreet. So, I'd just like to know what are some of your favorite models like this or what's the next step up in quality. Thanks! Also, USB-C please!

Agreed, it was probably a smart business decision.

Yeah, and I think they probably could've designed it in a different way too. I get the impression that they just wanted to be trendy/fashionable with it. I mean, does it really need that many pivot points? Design based on yoga? Lol, come on. Just give me practicality and functionality, I don't need any of that extra fluff.

Also, I found their first couple of paragraphs kind of disjointed:

"For most people, a great cup of espresso is associated with a cafe, a trained barista, and a large piece of expensive equipment. Options for brewing at home are scarce and pricey, and the ability to have your favorite espresso drink - on the GO - is even more difficult to come by.

But, for so many of us, our morning espresso is the fuel we need to take on our biggest challenges. It’s the way we greet our day, the comfort that raises us from our beds, hotel rooms, campsites and places far from home. Why should we settle for less, right at the exact moment we need the boost to be our best?"

You're literally trying to sell me an on-the-go espresso maker, and then make a comparison that basically suggests we're already making espresso in all of these places. Did an LLM write this or something? XD

All that being said, I do think the product looks neat. I don't really care that they made a pod capable version, but I'd be interested to see a review of this unit. Somebody link a James Hoffman video when he inevitably makes one. Lol

Many years ago, I was using typing trainer website that had a handful of public domain books available to train on as part of the end-of-course materials. I thought this was really neat, but I ran out of content pretty quickly and lamented the fact that there was nothing else available. Why couldn't you just choose any of the books that were in the public domain? The framework was already there, surely it wouldn't be difficult to implement? I was perplexed by such an obvious oversight and missed opportunity. Well, today I stumbled upon the exact thing I had wanted to have back then and just wanted to share.

What are the best (or worst) parts of your job?

Tagging along from one of the previous posts about people's jobs, what are your favorite things about your job. If you can't think of anything, then what are your least favorite things about it or what do you think you'd like to do instead if you could? My favorite thing is the appreciation we get from passerby. I've never had a job where people are genuinely appreciative of what we are doing, and it's nice to get that feedback from people even though the work itself can be pretty difficult. If there wasn't that for my job, it would certainly be less rewarding.

    Training collar, recommendations please

My dog loves to go mountainbiking with me. This doesn't really work with a leash (obviously), so a training collar comes in very handy on the off chance he sees a squirrel or something and wants to chase (Otherwise he's very well behaved). My issue is that the remote is not very easily/quickly accessible when I have it in my pocket. What I need is either, a training collar with a more 'handsfree' type of remote, or a different mounting solution for my current remote. Current ideas include: -wrist mount (like a watch or something maybe) -arm mount -chest mount/strap mount? -handlebar mount -belt mount Let me know if you have any ideas, or if you know of an out-of-the-box solution that's not going to cost an arm and a leg. I don't need a super high end training collar, because his behavior isn't that high maintenance and also I can't really afford it either.

    collaborative map software?

Avenza seems to be the go-to app. It works pretty well and all, but I'm wanting to know if there's any software available that can allow a team of people to simultaneously access and make edits/notes to a geo-referenced map. It also need to have kind of the same base functionality of being able to show your current location and all that. Ideally it should be designed for mobile first, but being able to access it from desktop too would be a plus. So, just for one example, I could add a placemarker on the map, and any of my team members who are also accessing that map will be able to see (in real time) the placemarker that I just made. Does this type of feature exist?

Is there any way to disable the power button popup window? I'd like it to be just an immediate shutdown switch, not have to confirm or wait 60 seconds... I'm on Pop OS

    trouble installing easytether

I tried using the default 'eddy' installer as well as 'gdebi' but both of them throw an error message. gdebi says "error: dependency is not satisfiable: libssl1.1 (>=1.1.0) eddy says "installation failed, child process exited with code 100"

Will a virtual machine work for this?

Newbie here. First of all, I successfully took ownership of a folder using the command line and I am proud of that. Even though it ended up being irrelevant for the problem in the end, it was still satisfying to be able to figure it out finally. Using the command line makes me feel like I'm doing cool stuff B) So, I was doing some digging, trying to get my mouse to work properly, and I ended up finding out some things. Hopefully this saves somebody some time/frustration in the future. -Logitech's software doesn't work in Linux (of course) -Piper doesn't work for this model (g502x *PLUS*) yet. Bummer. There is a workaround, however. This model actually includes on-board memory! Sweet, my money was not wasted after all! So, I just went back to windows (gross) and set up the profile I had been using previously. (sidenote, who TF uses forward and back for the side buttons? It obviously should be ctrl and shift for the defaults, respectively...) When I got back on my new setup, it was a success!!! It works perfectly well, and no issues so far. Now, for the main question, is there any easy way to set this up from Linux by using a windows virtual machine or something similar? Thanks for reading.

    USB tethering

Hey just wanted to ask for some recommendations on tethering my phone to my laptop. Would be nice to have options to hide tether usage if possible. Thanks

    Looking for recommendations https://mototecusa.com/images/products/detail/MTSKT1600.jpg

So, I've been considering micromobility options recently to help me get out a little bit more and range better. My dog told me he'd appreciate it if I got out a little more on my off-days. I don't know why he's gotta be so judgy like that... Anyways, -Bike formats are out, it needs to be easier to transport and not take up that much space. -Balance boards are cool, but I'm not sure that's quite what I'm looking for either... Electric skateboards, scooters, mountainboards, etc., what's good? I'm drawn to the idea of electric boards with (potentially?) off-road capabilities. I'm a mountainbiker and often have access to excellent trails, so I like the thought of being able to ride on those too sometimes but my main uses would probably just be getting around town or going out on paved greenways. Entry level would be good, I'm hoping for somewhere in the 500-1000 dollar range if it exists but if I have to pay more for something better then so be it. Also, DIY solutions aren't completely out of the question for me. I could see myself messing around with a build project if it strikes my fancy. Thanks for any help, I'm looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

is anyone familiar with the 'destructables' website? https://ds.vern.cc/projects/

~~It looks like they've got a ton of cool projects on the website, but whenever I try to go to any of them it just gives a 404 error. Just wondering if anyone's run into to this or knows what's going on with it.~~ This was just an error on my part. I forgot that I'd installed libredirect, and the 'destructables' website is just a frontend for instructables.com 🤦

suggestions on securing a fold out shelf

I've recently built a fold out shelf, to dual purpose as a headboard, and I'd like to be able to secure it in the upright position (I think. I'd also consider the down position if it's better somehow) for stability when moving. It's in a camper trailer, so there doesn't need to be any room for movement when it is secured. Here are some pictures so that you can see better what I'm working with: [vertical position](https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/2y4hmyvbguakepm22mev9/20240217_183434.jpg?rlkey=859k5fu2wsv621gi92nnrktp3&dl=0) [horizontal position](https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/a2187glkjjlpb7fkwfbah/20240217_183503.jpg?rlkey=glqcevuasx8ncvpi14kjczyt8&dl=0) It is brought out from the wall, so that the window blinds and the top piece on the window blinds are accounted for. It sits against the top piece nicely, but I just wanted to mention this detail because any wall-mounted solution would also likely need to be spaced out from the wall. I was thinking some type of latch system would probably be the best. Alternatively, I also kind of like the idea of an arm or kickstand type piece that could be mounted to the base piece on the counter and the underside of the shelf, possibly with dowels or something? Let me know what you guys think.

How viable is torrenting on a public connection?

My options for internet connectivity are very limited. I was wondering if I could go to a library or coffee shop or wherever has a good connection and do all my downloading remotely, or if I will run into problems/restrictions. I'm thinking they may not allow VPN's or something like that?

    auditory overstimulation (when shopping)

Hey, I'm interested in tips/recommendations for improving my shopping experience when going into stores that have loud music playing. I don't want to be unaware of my surroundings by not being able to hear at all, but the obnoxious levels to which many stores blast their (objectionably atrocious) music (as well as other loud/constant noise that is happening) is almost unbearable to me and really makes me not be able to think straight when I'm in the store. I've got my own task list and agenda, and when I can't think about things clearly it really slows down my whole process. I'm wondering if any of those decibel reducer ear plugs would be a viable option? I feel like I've seen those recommended a few times. I've experimented by wearing noise cancelling earbuds before, which kind of worked, but this presented some level of unawareness that I didn't like and also seems kind of rude in a way? There's got to be a better solution. Thanks for reading.

    Fuck Ubisoft.

I was pretty hyped for the new prince of persia game (the lost crown), but come to find out it's only available on ubisoft's proprietary launcher or epic games. Nope, and nope. I just want to have it available on my usual storefront, Steam, but it's been decidedly omitted. As a long time fan of the old games, this kind of hurts. Especially since many of the others -are- available on Steam. I wonder if/when it will come out for Steam. These platform exclusivity deals need to die. Edit: It's also available on several consoles, my post was just from a pc gamer's perspective.
