I like to find news sources that analyze the story as well as explains where it fits into the ongoing situation, why it's relevant, and has a reasonably accurate history of predictions based on their analysis. Since this is rare, I try to find a source that has 3 of the 4 to make it part of my news consumption. So this tends to include Democracy Now!, Some More News, Last Week Tonight, Beau of the Fifth Column, AP, and the like. A lot of the sources shared on lemmy, bar the NYT, are in that category

I get it, capitalism fucking sucks. We're talking coping mechanisms for taking breaks from the struggle though, and I'm just describing what works for me. There's no guarantee that the things that work for me will work for everyone. I just think people work too much and should take breaks whenever they're able.

One of my tricks to extend vacation time on a PTO budget is to alternate the days between paid and unpaid, usually 3 days a week instead of the typical 5. 2 weeks can get extended to at least 3 by alternating. My approach is a hold over from working retail, where we had no PTO. The idea is that I wouldn't be getting paid anyways, so I shore up the budget before vacation so the shortfall payday doesn't create too much disruption

This is a good basic starter, but there's so much more that can be done for efficiency and further reducing your impact while owning a house. These are a few off the top of my head:
- Installing high efficiency windows and doors
- Keep/add the mud room
- Add better insulation
- If you're in the middle of a remodel, check for water distribution efficiency
- Grow a small hydroponic garden for your most commonly eaten veggies
- They're currently pretty rare, but adding a recycling water shower
- Battery assisted fridges and stoves (there's a healthy dose of nuance between this and home battery backups)
- Form a community microgrid

To me, that sounds like you need to take the time to do your home projects first and then take the vacation. I don't know what would work best for you, but for me it would be taking another 6 week break. I'd spend the first 3 weeks doing the home tasks, and the next 3 on the vacation

I know some of the union leaders at UPW, including one of the Paizo writers that may have worked on the starter adventure (I don't know for certain). They're incredibly passionate about their work, and honestly would understand your frustrations about capitalism. They likely pushed to make as much as possible free, so folks in your position would still be able to share the joy of their work even if they can't afford the starter adventure.
I know none of this will make your frustration go away, but I hope you know that they didn't do it out of malice.

If game companies stood to make no money, why would they bother with such a large production?
I'm a games industry professional. I would continue to do this work as an unpaid job if my basic needs were met on a societal level.
You think you're asking a neutral question, but you're not. Companies operating within capitalism will behave in the interests of capitalists. IP laws aren't required for the AAA studios other than to domineer control over an idea. A game like Call of Duty is a titan made by 1000s of professionals. One of those games gets launched every year. By shear force of momentum, there are very few companies that could ever replicate it in any fashion.
Now imagine if COD was made by a company in which IP didn't exist, all the profits went to the workers rather than shareholders, and that the workers have a say in the launch schedule. Would you be willing to pay for a game in that instance?

It's not a failure of anything. Billionaires are an inevitably of capitalism.
Some of the more avid history fans might be thinking, "Casey Jones saved several lives, why is he being portrayed as a scab?" The intro that Utah gives for this song doesn't explain it enough in my opinion. It's a fictitious and comedy song that uses the name recognition of Casey, simply because there weren't really any well known railroad scabs and Joe Hill was basing this song on the Ballad of Casey Jones in honor of a rail strike.

The new bill primarily clarifies rules that were a bit vague, but it also has new changes that will substantially improve life-work balance. * ESST can be used in at least 15 minute increments and cannot be required to use more than four-hour increments * Qualifying workers were expanded to people hired with an expectation of working 80 hours in a year, rather than actual hours worked. Some jobs still exempted * ESST usage has expanded to bereavement * ESST rules for use are expanded to all paid time off * Employers that do not provide ESST must pay the worker for twice the amount they were supposed to get in ESST
Classic Jacobin, several months late on important news /s Seriously though, while the article primarily focuses on the rule change from last year, the backdrop is necessary to cover what seems to be the first case since the rule was established. It can never be understated how important this NLRB ruling actually is. The laws still need to be updated to reflect modern union busting tactics, but this ruling is still crucial. The Cemex ruling restores part of what's known as "Joy Silk" doctrine, which was a major factor in the huge boom of unions from the 1940's through 1968. The casino is "considering it's options". I hope that means they cement the rule.
I don't think this is actually about needing to pay wages, I believe that the real target is the fast food worker council that was created to make these changes. I think they're going for a tried and true method to gain conservative sympathy, but Republicans are self-segregating away from California and their political influence is waning in the state.
To start for anyone that may be concerned by the title, I've always considered myself an ally and I've supported both family and friends when they came out to me. I've always known that it takes a lot of trust for someone to come out like that, and I want to be the friend that they feel safe to talk with about that stuff. I'm autistic, and I've recently started my journey of understanding that, my gender, and my sexuality. I've suspected since college that I was ace, and finally understood that about myself in the last few months. I made the first public message ever referring to myself as queer in a casual setting as a passing comment today which honestly felt a little strange, but already feels natural. What I need help with understanding, is why should I actively tell my friends and family about it? The way I see it, I've always been this way and nothing will change in me between now and 10 seconds after I say something. I don't think of it as hiding anything either, I think of it as me being me. Why do others feel the need to share with people close to them?
Bella Ciao has a long history with leftists, but this is likely the original! Rather than being about partisans fighting against fascists, this version is about the brutal working conditions laboring women faced in the Italian rice paddies.
This song is about how workers have been injured, maimed, and died on the job for capitalists. This song highlights how there's already violence inherent to the system of capitalism, though I feel it's impossible to see that message without also realizing that we should not be afraid of violence when opposing the capitalist class in strikes, protests, and other direct action.
This song is by the band Los Lobos, and actually comes from the album used as our community art! The band wanted to commemorate the 1965 Delano Grape Strike by the UFW. The phrase "viva la huelga en general!" means "long live the general strike!" Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta were the leaders of this strike, with Dolores also coordinating the wine and grape boycott with the International Longshoremen union and community supporters.
