Honestly, it's probably not worth the hassle to try to install system apps elsewhere. Steam and Lutris, on the other hand, can put games on any mounted drive. Install them as normal, and then in Steam, set up a steam library in /Apps. In Lutris, you should have the option to choose where each game is installed each time you install one.

Edit: Here are the problems with you "Wayland isn't good enough" people.

First, you don't use Wayland, so you don't even know if it's fixed whatever weird issue you encountered with it before or if it supports a niche use case, for example.

Second, Wayland won't get good enough for you until you start using it and reporting bugs. You think X11 was a bed of roses when it first started? Or do you think they bumped the version number 11 times for fun?

I played through SMTIV a few years ago and have SMTIV:A, but never touched it. Is it different enough to check out, or should I just stick to SMTV:V?

There's a host app that runs on the host machine alongside Sunshine that reads your Steam library, and the Deck plugin adds an icon on each game's banner on your Deck. When you click the icon, the plugin communicates with the host app and then automatically starts a Moonlight/Sunshine session that then starts up the game you were on. You only have to add one "app" to Sunshine and set up the MoonDeckBuddy app on the host, and then you have streaming for your entire library available.

I found MoonDeck while perusing the Decky plugin store and it's absolutely awesome. I've had Moonlight and Sunshine set up for a while because Steam streaming is very inconsistent between Deck and Linux, but I didn't use it often because it's a pain setting up launchers in Sunshine for each individual game. MoonDeck takes the hassle out of that completely, and I find myself streaming GPU-intensive games to my living room much more often nowadays. I highly recommend it!

The audio issue isn't too big of a deal, you just have to do a full reboot to go back into game mode. Just takes a few extra seconds.

But if you already have an LCD, I see the wisdom in waiting for the team to iron out OLED support.

    Jump
  • frozen frozen 6 months ago 100%

I could go in-depth, but really, the best way I can describe my docker usage is as a simple and agnostic service manager. Let me explain.

Docker is a container system. A container is essentially an operating system installation in a box. It's not really a full installation, but it's close enough that understanding it like that is fine.

So what the service devs do is build a container (operating system image) with their service and all the required dependencies - and essentially nothing else (in order to keep the image as small as possible). A user can then use Docker to run this image on their system and have a running service in just a few terminal commands. It works the same across all distributions. So I can install whatever distro I need on the server for whatever purpose and not have to worry that it won't run my Docker services. This also means I can test services locally on my desktop without messing with my server environment. If it works on my local Docker, it will work on my server Docker.

There are a lot of other uses for it, like isolated development environments and testing applications using other Linux distro libraries, to name a couple, but again, I personally mostly just use it as a simple service manager.

tldr + eli5 - App devs said "works on my machine", so Docker lets them ship their machine.

KotOR's console controls can be a bit awkward at times. I haven't played it on Switch, but I originally played it when it released on the OG Xbox. I assume the control scheme is similar. And the graphics are going to be dated, but that's a given for a game from '03. But other than that, I'm sure it'll be a fantastic experience, especially for a die-hard Star Wars fan. It's still my top game of all time, and if you can play it on PC with some graphical enhancement mods, it still holds up really well nowadays.

Aspyr's KotOR port was considered pretty good, I believe. I was disappointed in their Civilization series ports for Linux because their netcode was incompatible with the Windows versions, which is baffling to me, considering Linux users are already siloed so much in other ways. But the games ran okay, so it wasn't all bad.

But yeah, I haven't really heard any good updates or news come out of Aspyr for a while. If I recall correctly, they were the original devs for the KotOR remake, which was going to be their first game from the ground up from a technical perspective. But they had that taken away from them after working on it for a year or two, which is crazy. It must've truly been awful.

Aspyr has a history of laziness and incompetence, unfortunately. I really want to like the company because they were one of the few companies bringing my favorite games to Linux (KotOR and the Civ series) before Steam and Proton got so damn good. But their Civ ports were always plagued with weird bugs not in the original games, not to mention they didn't have cross-platform multiplayer, preventing me from playing online with my Windows-using friends unless I dual-booted or tried to fight Wine. And somehow their Civ save file format is different, so you couldn't even switch between Windows and Linux and continue the same game. It was baffling.

The reason this works well for certain applications and not others comes down to programming language / framework and compilation optimization.

If the application was compiled directly into an executable binary and optimized, it can be decompiled, but it won't be human-readable. Programmers would have to delve in and manually trace the code paths to figure out how it works. Fun fact, this is how a lot of the retro game decompilation projects are happening. Teams of volunteers are going through the unreadable decompilations and working together to figure them out.

Dotnet and Java based applications are easier, because they don't usually get directly compiled into machine-executable binaries, and even when they do, it's still easy to decompile them. This is because they're both compiled to an intermediate language that's more optimized than the original, then that IL is run by a runtime. Dotnet's IL is called Common Intermediate Language and Java's is called bytecode. This sounds weird, but it's kinda cool, because it lets people write different languages without having to have a full compiler. They just have to be able to get it compiled to an intermediate language, and then the existing runtime can take it from there.

    GBA core with RTC?

I've searched around, but the only GBA core that seems to exist is [spiritualized's](https://github.com/spiritualized1997/openFPGA-GBA), which doesn't have RTC support and hasn't had a release in over a year. I was actually under the impression that RTC support in cores wasn't possible, but then budude2 just released his [GB/GBC core](https://github.com/budude2/openfgpa-GBC) that *does* have RTC support. So now I'm wondering if it's possible for GBA. I ask because I play a ton of Pokemon ROM hacks that take advantage of time changes, and it would be nice to have some of the core features of the Pocket. For example, sleep/wake doesn't work for Everdrives, and save states / memories are iffy.

    Remote Play rant

Full specs in first comment. So first of all, this is **not** a "Linux sucks" rant, I want to make that clear. I've been using Linux for over 10 years now. Started with Ubuntu, moved to Arch, now on openSUSE Tumbleweed on both my desktop and laptop. I'm a software dev by trade and sysadmin by hobby. But why in the shit can Valve not get Remote Play on Linux in a useable state? Let me lay out my evening yesterday. I took my car to the shop for an appointment that I knew was going to last 4+ hours, so I took my Steam Deck. I finished up Spider-Man 1 and moved on to Miles Morales. All of this was flawless (as was playing most of Spider-Man 1 on Tumbleweed, btw). I got home and decided I wanted to remote play MM from my desktop to the Steam Deck in the living room. All wired, no wifi. The reason for this is that I want to use the power of my desktop to get high quality graphics, as opposed to the medium settings at 30 FPS I get with the Steam Deck. Note that I've done this with some games before, notably Persona 5 Royal, but it's been a year or so. I launched MM for the first time on the desktop after selecting Proton-GE 8.0-6 (since that's what worked with SM1). Immediately, I was greeted with a warning that my drivers may be out of date. They aren't, but whatever, I clicked okay and the game launched fine. Cool, that's fine, I figured I'd just launch the game on desktop before I go back to the living room and connect with Remote Play. I messed around a bit to make sure it would play okay, set my graphics options, etc., it worked perfectly. I went back to the Deck and clicked Remote Play. It attempted to connect, but threw me back to the library screen. Weird, but okay. I re-launched Steam on my desktop from terminal, so I could check the logs the next time. Tried to connect again, and it worked. *Weird*... but okay. Except after loading a save, I was again thrown back to my library screen, with no option to re-connect. I checked my desktop, and the entire game had crashed. Weird. So I rebooted my machine and Deck and tried again. Same thing. Okay, fine, I figured, you know what, this is one of the things I have a Windows VM with PCIe passthrough for. So I booted the VM, booted MM, set graphics options, everything was great, cool. Went back to the Deck, and tried to connect. Again, it attempted for a second and then sent me right back to the library. That's wild. So I rebooted the VM and the Deck and tried again. Got connected and loaded the game, it didn't crash, alright, cool, we're in. Next, I started running into issues where I was getting random inputs on menus. Specifically only menus. Weird, but as long as my save doesn't get deleted, no big deal, I guess. So I played for a few minutes, then noticed the frame rate was super choppy, even though the FPS overlay from the host was reporting 100+ FPS. The Deck overlay had errored out and was reporting 3000+ FPS, which obviously isn't right. This is actually a problem I'd run into with P5R before, so I knew the fix was to go into quick battery settings and toggle the per-game profile. This fixed it, but only for a few minutes at a time. I don't remember P5R having this issue so frequently, and it's also a much bigger nuisance in a game that's not turn-based. I eventually gave up and just moved back to my desktop (Tumbleweed) to continue playing, where everything worked perfectly (minus the outdated driver warning). Needless to say, it was a *very* frustrating experience for me, and that's not a good thing. I couldn't imagine ever taking someone who's never used Linux and dumping them into that situation. I really hope Valve works on stuff like this.

I've tried Jerboa, Liftoff, and Voyager, but I keep coming back to the standard Lemmy PWA with the Lemmy Universal Link Switcher user script. I want to share links to posts and content, but I'd like for the link to use my instance's version of the content instead of the origin, for two reasons. 1. It helps my instance federate content. 2. I want to make content discovery and subscription as easy as possible for my friends in order to push Lemmy adoption. If I share something with them from a community they aren't subscribed to, but they want to subscribe, I don't want them to have to go back to my instance, find the community, and then subscribe. If I was able to share a link to my instance's version, they would've just been able to open the sidebar (or app equivalent) and hit join. Thanks in advance!

    What's your equipment?

Until Lemmy gets a flair system, I thought we could share our diabetes equipment in this thread. My stuff for T1: * Dexcom G6 * TSlim X2 * Novolog

[US] Is it normal for insurance to change preferred insulin in the middle of the year?

I just had to call my endo to change my insulin to Novolog because my insurance decided they like it better. This is after the same insurance switched me to Humalog late last year. I'll never understand insurance companies.

Is anyone using the Dexcom G7 yet? www.dexcom.com

Just recently released in the US, but my pump (TSlim X2) doesn't work with it yet 😭. Is anyone using it yet, and if so, how has it been compared to your previous CGM?

    Upgrading a self-hosted Docker instance

I'm currently running v0.17.3 on my server and want to upgrade to v0.17.4. I'm having trouble finding upgrade documentation. Is it as simple as changing the version numbers in the docker-conpose.yml file?

    Persona 5 Tactica — Announcement Trailer www.youtube.com

I love Fire Emblem game play, so this looks pretty fun. I wish it wasn't chibi-style art, but can't have everything, I guess.

Metaphor: ReFantazio — Announcement Trailer youtu.be

New MegaTen spin off, looks like a hybrid between SMT and Persona. I'm stoked, it looks cool as hell.

Electric Callboy - We Got The Moves www.youtube.com

I'm a huge metalhead, and Electric Callboy is so fucking *fun*. I love that they don't take themselves too seriously and just have a good time.

Some federated communities don't load posts/comments

I successfully set up a selfhosted Lemmy instance using docker and subscribed to various lemmy.ml communities. But [!android@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/c/android) and [!firefox@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/c/firefox) specifically aren't loading any posts or (I assume) comments. I don't see any errors in the container logs either. Any help is appreciated!
