Our office I'm actually going to give them props for this - they do these events during work hours. Summer bbq? Close office 4 hrs early and it's free drinks and food for everyone. Annual golf event? Tuesday at noon, you can work or you can golf, your call.
Granted I'm too busy to partake for the most part but I'm not a clock puncher, and if I was, I'd appreciate the effort.

quietly? It's loud as fuck.
The world is, loudly, starting to become a little too much like the first quarter of the last century. And it isn't good, man.

I mean, it sounds like he has a point? Perhaps another judge should sentence him to prison instead, just so they don't have grounds for an appeal on this.

Indeed.
Weird like, I'd rather seventy three companies and all world governments not know what I'm literally talking about in my bedroom with my wife, so I'm weird?
Yikes.

Lemmy honestly getting worse lately. Like there's no nuance and no chance to discuss anything unless you agree with a very narrow, "acceptable" mindset.

Counterpoint - you're cherry picking. He also invites left wing guests and gives them the same opportunity to speak.
He has a vast audience because a more centrist view of things appeals to a huge # of people. Your description of his audience is reductive and close minded. Yep, there are people who fit that description. And there are going to be others who fit every other description you can write down, too. Why? Because hundreds of millions of people listen.

Ehh, landlords house. Doesn't owe them anything. The system sucks but the guy just lives inside the same system as the rest of us.
Honestly what people who are landlords for 1 or 2 places do isn't that bad. It's the 40% of households being owned by corporations, who are willing to keep them vacant, causing the majority of the pressure (Intentionally, btw)

You'll see him try to criticize Biden but Maher doesn't let him, because he just keeps going back to how much worse trump is. While probably correct, Rogan just wanted to dump on the prez without talking about trump, and Maher can't seem to do that.

The most recent viral moment I can remember is the Bill Maher episode from Sept 2
Here it is, jumping in talking about Biden https://youtu.be/4btqj2Ghk04?si=Ug6eNsPM67kcatDN

Bigot is a strong word for him. I guess if you are pro-trans athletes in sports you would find him that way, but I can't really think of other issues where he expresses close minded views? Fucking guy learns and changes his mind when presented with evidence, which is a huge reason I can listen to him. Even if some of the subjects and guests are kinda fucked up or dull or misinformed.
Like, tulsi gabbard last week reading a thing from the UN and totally either misunderstanding it, or worse, twisting it into saying something it 100% wasn't. And Rogan was just kinda like "I dunno maybe" as he's not very confrontational, very often.
Screwthehole 1 year ago • 95%
His recent viral moment discussing Biden was about how he's no longer lucid, and shouldn't be let to run for a second term. His guest was trying to say how much worse trump was, but Rogan doesn't really think either ought to be president in 2024.

I enjoy Rogan. I hear shit I should know without the msm slant.
Some of his guests are batshit crazy, but I think he just gives a platform to everybody. You know, free speech is also freedom to disagree. But censorship isn't good, and he's not about that.
From time to time his guests say some ridiculous shit though. I'd say I agree with maybe 40% of the content, disagree with 40%, and am neutral or uneducated on the 20% in the middle. It'll spur me in to read / listen to other topics and expand my knowledge base so I can form an opinion.
There's a load of shit brought up on Rogan you might otherwise have not known, because the media is a stilted propaganda machine.

We have a sandwich shop that runs 24 hrs from Tuesday morning until Saturday night. I've picked up late night supper there and seen people playing cards, etc and just generally hanging out for long stretches.
When I was younger my buddies and I went to a 24 hr diner and played magic into the wee hrs, occasionally leaving only when the earliest breakfast crowd started to roll in.

If they're offering these items for less $ than I pay ordering online, and manage to have stock of all the niche items so I'm not waiting for shipping....sure. Doesn't seem possible to do those things though?

It's bad, ie rents keep rising, groceries keep rising, gas keeps going up. Average wages don't. But at the same time we have lots of people with plenty of money, moms with time to walk their kids to the parks on a Tuesday afternoon... Plenty of people are making plenty of money. It's just that if you aren't one of those it's pretty difficult.
Younger peeps are just living with roommates or shacking up to make it work. But they aren't living in vans en mass, or something.

For the past 6 months, every Monday I get 5 40% off Uber Eats food deliveries. By spending $40 on this, I find myself having dinner for us, and leftovers for someone's lunch, for not a whole lot less than cooking our own. For instance I roasted a chicken the other day, I made a caesar salad, with all the fixings. The chicken was what 11 bucks the salad stuff was another eight for the lettuce and the dressing. Meanwhile I order a $40 Uber Eats meal and pay 30 including delivery/tip so it's not really that far off. If they ever stop sending me those coupons then it's back to the kitchen for me. But for now, might as well order my burritos or pad Thai while the going is good!

I didn't mean stop living with parents I meant stop failing.
Shit, I failed for most of my 20s and then it got worse. Waaaaay fucking worse, like, I Mean it when I say worst than for most people. I don't really want to get into it here, but bad.
And then I learned some lessons and worked my ass off and here we are.

Literally everyone I know does, though. It's your calendar, your email, your communication. The only jobs I can imagine that you don't need to have a mobile device are when you are a drone who has to sit where the boss tells you all day long. Even then, your work likely communicates with staff via text or an app.
Has it been awhile since you worked somewhere?
Screwthehole 1 year ago • 100%
Lol I don't know. I guess if you work at Amazon or something having one could be considered optional. My job is literally dependant on my cell phone, and my ability to handle emails calls and texts while away from the office is a core of my ability to earn enough money to pay my bills.
If I didn't have a cell phone for even 1 day, I would make $0 that day at my job.
Screwthehole 1 year ago • 100%
Agreed and that'd be great. But also, no that doesn't help this individual right now at all.
Of course a better paying job will help. If your job paid more and you spend the same, suddenly and by definition, the person would not be as broke.
Screwthehole 1 year ago • 100%
Why even mention no cell phones?
In the 1700s they budgeted by not paying all electric bill! So frugal. 🤣
No one in western society can function or even have a job probably, without a cell phone in 2023

When I had a job that didn't pay enough, I did side work. For me, for a long time, that was reffing mens hockey.
Another time I was struggling I approached my boss and said I know I'm not your best employee right now, but I want to turn it around and get into a higher paying position. What do you need me to do? Then I did it, and moved up.
5 yrs ago we moved to anew city and I started over in a new thing. I took a job that didn't really cover our bills, and my wife and I had to make some cuts.
But I wanted certain freedoms like the freedom to do my hobbies or take a vacation, so identified ways to earn additional income through the job I had (in my case it was handling little repairs like replacing smoke detector batteries and light bulbs, installing missing door stops and changing deadbolts). I've kept grinding until I took over for my boss, and I continue to handle repairs also. Effectively I work a job and side job at the same time 6 days a week. I work fucking hard, but I had nice vacations with my fam this summer, live in a good house and drive a good vehicle.
So honestly - and while I don't think this is how it should be - in the system we have, I just grind harder. I am amazed at my ability to do this now in my 30s and now 40s compared to how lazy (in hindsight) I was in my 20s.
By the way! I'm also pretty happy now because my job is (mostly) ok, I don't dread Mondays or anything most weeks.

In my Canadian market, they are building lots of homes. Many are big, brand new, and listed for 1.2+. Entire streets are just sitting with rows of for sale signs out front. The reason? Only the top 2-3% of income earners qualify for mortgages on these.
Until they drop prices, or interest rates, they won't going anywhere

So. You've got everyone scared of the evils of socialism because of the red scare and the cold war, and so nobody too far left is ever electable. Got it. Why aren't people afraid of going too far right (ie the Nazi party was the probably the furthest right party ever elected). I don't see how you could be any less afraid of that outcome? Isn't the only sane view to steer clear of either extreme? Why is it that the dirty socialism word is so much more terrifying than fascism? I'm so lost. Anyone got some help for me?
Pretty prophetic doc, holy!

So in the past few months I’ve consumed three body trilogy, the bobiverse, expanse series, dogs of war (meh), quantum earth x2 (meh) and project hail Mary. I really enjoyed most of these, with dark Forest being my favourite read lately. What should be in my reading list next, as I get close to the end of the expanse books?
