The chat history is the big one for me. It’s not even that it’s not persistent; I’d be fine if it just purged all messages after a set period. The problem is that it seems to selectively purge some messages but keep others. Makes me feel like I’m crazy when I go back and try to find something that I know I sent a while ago, but there’s just a gap.

These aren’t exactly exploration games, but they’re simple games that my toddler likes too:

    • Animal Crossing is easily her favorite. She loves “helping” my wife pick outfits and fish.
    • A Building Full of Cats is short, cheap, and cute. She likes making up stories about each apartment and cat. There’s also tons of similar games in different locations.
    • Cats in Time has simple puzzles that she can do with a bit of help.
    • Slime Rancher might be a good fit. It’s simple and cute with a focus on exploration.
    • Dorf Romantik is a relaxing and cute game that’s a good introduction to resource management. She might not be good at the actual goal of the game, but she likes placing tiles.
    • Subnautica in creative mode might be interesting for exploration, depending on how sensitive your kid is about some of the darker areas and creatures.

I guess this is neat, but I don’t understand what the point is. Here’s what it says this program offers:

The program provides a digital studio environment, access to advanced AI tools and technologies, partnership with experts in the field, and opportunities for collaboration within our established artist community. It also includes a $1000 grant and promotion to our community of millions.

$1000 is nothing nowadays; I’m not sure what that would even do. Buy most of a 4090?

I already have a “digital studio environment” set up on my computer. I like it the way it is.

Partnership with experts and community collaboration are already pretty easy with social media. The generative AI community is generally helpful.

I guess this program might help people who aren’t already using generative AI get into it?

    • Description: Thistle is a calm and observant druid who communicates with animals to gather useful information. She has a soft spot for the city's least loved creatures and has made it her mission to protect them.
    • Looks: Thistle is short with a rounded figure. She has curly red hair, bright green eyes and a face full of freckles. Her clothes are earth-toned, and she usually has a small creature or two tucked into her pockets.
    • Voice: Her voice is soft and melodic, often mimicking the sounds of the animals she communicates with.
    • Quirk: She often speaks to animals as if they can understand her, and considers it rude not to greet a rat in the street.
    • Likes: Animals, nature, secrets, pies
    • Dislikes: Animal cruelty, secrets being withheld from her, overly processed food
    • Goals: To ensure the safety and fair treatment of all creatures in Waterdeep, regardless of their size or perceived value.
    • Frustration: She has recently found out about a planned rat extermination in one of the wealthier districts and is trying to find a way to stop it.

I wasn’t trying to imply that Typst is a replacement for LaTeX. I’m more trying to say that I’m hoping Typst (and any other typesetting alternatives that might be out there) mature enough over the next year or two to become full replacements. It just doesn’t seem to be gaining much attention because of how dominant LaTeX is.

The main part that’s not open source is their web client, which I’m fine with. There’s a number of people on GitHub that aren’t happy about it though.

I’ve been using Typst. Its (mostly) open source and much simpler than LaTeX. It’s still very new though, so it doesn’t have all of LaTeX’s features, but it’s making very steady progress.

I mean more that LaTeX’s syntax and compilation methods are outdated. I’ve tried to grok LaTeX many times, but the most I’ve ever been able to do is make small modifications to existing templates. I’ve never been able to make a brand new project work. I’m really hoping that modern alternatives like Typst become more common. There just don’t seem to be many out there because of how dominant LaTeX is.

As a GM, basically any artificer / inventor. They only fit into very specific settings, so they’re very out of place in most games. If the system has light rules for inventions, the player thinks they can create anything, and I have to constantly fight them to stop trying to one-up the other characters. If the system has robust invention rules, these characters don’t generally get to invent anything since so much downtime and resources are required.

Every job will have some sort of crunch time. Even just staying in a programming position, the definition of “crunch time” will vary wildly. I’m lucky enough that “crunch time” just means that I set aside all my other tasks until I fix whatever is on fire, but I still get to go home on time unless I really want the overtime pay.

I don’t envy positions with forced 80-hour workweek crunch times. That’s a sign of bad management.

The greatest thing about episodes like Takeaway and Sticky Gecko is that they show how chaotic kids are in real time. I could keep up if they would space out all these little crises, but kids will easily throw ten different problems at you in the span of minutes.

I’m really conflicted on this. On the one hand, you’re right that just having someone to talk with can really help. On the other hand, good therapists don’t just listen: they offer advice backed by decades of research to help you resolve those problems. I’m curious how much research has been done about whether LLMs would be useful or actually damaging in cases like this.

That makes sense. I really like that the documentation is right at the top; many times all I want to do is find the right page in the official docs. You might want to look at how results are prioritized though: right now when I search for something simple like “how to center a div”, that result from Mozilla’s docs is included but it’s hidden as the second or third result. I would expect the page that’s explicitly about centering a div to be the top result, followed by the docs page for the element itself and maybe pages for flex or grid or something. That’s a really simple example, so maybe it’s not the target of this project, but I would still hope that simple topics are covered just as well as complex ones.

EDIT: I was a bit mistaken: “how to center a div” does bring up the Mozilla documentation for centering an element, but “center a div” brings up a page about accessibility as the top result.

The GitHub for Memmy shows the last commit was a month ago. That’s not “abandoned” for an open source personal project, but it definitely seems to be on the developer’s back burner right now.

I like supporting smaller projects, but Memmy’s just gotten outpaced by other recent clients. I’ve switched to Voyager and really like it. I’ll come back to Memmy once it’s getting active development again.

Are you using this as a project to learn about machine learning, or are you trying to use machine learning to solve this project? I truthfully don’t know much about the inner workings of ML, but this project seems like something that’s already very doable without ML.

It’s a good start. I’m curious why you didn’t include a section for social media like StackOverflow or Reddit. If I go to Google with a question, it’s usually for an edge case not covered by the documentation. Maybe add them as a section at the bottom to indicate that they might be less relevant?

Also, this might just be a web developer thing, but why include blogs? Almost all coding blogs I’ve seen are SEO cancer that just copy from the documentation or each other. Are there actually useful blogs out there that I’ve just been missing?

You joke, but the skills learned in DMing are incredibly useful on a resume. Run a few Adventures League games and include that and your recruiter probably will be impressed. It’s easy to teach people how to do their job, but it’s very difficult to teach someone how to lead people and think on your feet.

Using Pandoc to export to Obsidian markdown?

Does anyone have a good setup/configuration for converting documents to Obsidian-flavored markdown with Pandoc? I’ve been fiddling with it for a few hours but can’t seem to get everything right: - Obsidian markdown doesn’t support `^superscript^`. I can get Pandoc to use `sup` instead by allowing `raw_html`, but then… - Image embeds don’t work. Pandoc wants to use `img` for some reason, and no matter what relative src I use the image just won’t show up. I could fix all of this by running the files through a linter of some sort, but I feel like I’m missing something. Surely someone must have had these issues before me, right?
