Where do you live that cops deserve respect? Nobody DESERVES respect, least of all due to their shitty job. If you want respect you earn it, and cops have been doing the opposite (in north america) since their inception.

People said the exact same thing about reddit being only good for technology enthusiasts and porn in the early days.

In my experience that is just how it goes on the internet. Nerds, furries, and porn collectors, are the early adopters for most places. The normies follow along years later.

I also have severe malabsorption and can't process most veg at all. I have been told hundreds of times that I am lying, and that I don't need to eat meat. To some of these people it is better for us to suffer than to eat meat, while they claim to subscribe to a philosophy of reducing suffering.

Iritis/uveitis - My cornea detached due to the heavy pressure inside my eye. The most painful thing EVER.

Motorcycle accident at highway speed that jammed gravel into my cranial cavity and left me looking like watermelon-head for 3 months - I'd still rather have this than kidney stones or iritis...

I think we agree. CEO should not be making decisions from a technical point of view, so they should not be second-guessing the technical people.

I'm at the stage of my career that pretty much every job I take, I report directly to the CEO. And the difference between what they should do and what they actually do is why I made my statement at the top of this thread.

Why not consult the people who actually know their stuff?

I mean questioning as in second-guessing the people who actually know stuff. Not asking experts for their honest thoughts.

Don’t you think that management could use your help and advice to make good strategic decisions in the long term?

Management is one thing - C-levels is yet another kettle of fish.

In my experience C-levels rarely want the technical answer to a question, and will be personally insulted / defensive if the answer is something they don't understand. And they will ask their questions in such a way as to insult the expert. Two negative results that don't help the business in any way.

But Dept heads and the PM office will often be able to explain why certain choices were made, and how that aligns with the business needs, without the complexities that cause misunderstanding between two people of such wildly divergent skillsets.

Now if the CEO can also write the code, or run the wetlab instruments, and really does want the nitty-gritty, complex technical answer, that is a different story. And rarely the case in my career.

Long term strategic thinking, experience to understand when trends and short-term solutions would be long-term mistakes, and the ability to avoid directly questioning someone with a skillset they don't have themselves about technical or complex issues.

Go through an intermediary. Like a department head.

The developers, engineers, and architects don't need your help, they need you to set logical long-term goals, hire good department heads, and schmooze with other CEOs in the same space.

We've been married 15 years. If we use a first name to address each other it usually means we are out in public and trying to find one another. And that is only because if I shout 'QD(cutie)' 5 women will turn around thinking it is their SO so it isn't super useful.

If you bugged our house you would think my wife's name is Dear, QD, Darling, Beautiful, or "HOLY SHIT CHECK THIS OUT". There is almost no chance you'd catch either of our real names on that tape.

Since I was able to get the measurements from the app he was using I think this is going to be my course of action. I will ask for my script from the optometrist and then take the pupil measurements from that picture and send them to someone who will make the lenses for my sunglasses.

Anybody familiar with optician work able to tell me if this optician was lying?

Location: Canada Background: When I first started wearing glasses the optometrist would just give me a piece of paper that I could take to any shop to get my lenses made. Then they started refusing that paper and insisting I either leave my frames with them for two weeks, or that I buy new frames. And now it seems like even asking for the script, or the measurements, is 'against policy'. --- I recently went in for an eye exam and some new glasses, and the optician said something I have never been told before. I had asked if they could give me the prescription for my sunglass lenses since they don't deal with the brand that I prefer, and he said that I would have to schedule another appointment at a shop that deals with that brand, because the prescription was not enough, and I would also need the measurements he took. I asked if I could have those measurements and he said it was against policy. Is he lying to try to get me to buy new frames from his shop? Or is there something to what he is saying? Confession - When he walked away I took a picture of the measuring app he had used which seems to show all the measurements. Would this be useful to another shop? I'm just trying to buy lenses without spending a fortune on yet another frame. It all feels like a scam.

    It is nothing fancy.

I have an old SodaStream that I picked up second hand for 20 bucks, and an adapter from amazon that lets me hook up to a bar/resto sized CO2 container.

Add in a 5 foot extension line from a bar setup so that it can live up on a shelf and we are done.

The savings are remarkable. Instead of 20 bucks for 60litres of water, which I go through in about ten days, I get about 5 months of super bubbly water for 45 bucks total.

Happy birthday to me. I got myself a windshield!

I rode most of my life without a windshield, but when I bought my Indian it had a windshield on it that I swore I would tear off the second I got home. But then I realized that after an hour plus ride my eyes had not watered once, my ears weren’t having ghost ringing, and my arms were just not tired… When I picked up this bobber I knew I would want a windshield. But justifying the expense took a bit. I have been riding it for a month or two without a shield now, and I had to wear earplugs so that the wind noise doesn’t make my tiniitus go nuts. Today was the first real ride with the screen on. And holy cow. I love this bike even more now. Details: It is a madstad 20inch touring screen made for a triumph speedmaster. I modified it to fit the bobber by drilling some new holes, but otherwise I used the hardware and fasteners that came in the kit. I can post some pics of the fitment if there is interest.

And last, but never least. My oldest friend - a 1973 Triumph Daytona 500 (bored out to almost 600)

This bike has been built and rebuilt too many times to count. I got it as a box of rusty parts when I was 15 years old, and have been working on it since. I put thousands of KM on this old girl, but these days she spends most of her time resting. Other than a kick once in a while to hear hear rumble. Right now I'm in the process of bobbing it with a bolt on kit. It will probably always come back to stock, but I have wanted to see it bobbed for 20+ years and didn't want to cut the frame. ![](https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/8f4eacd3-aa47-4669-9c1d-865c0aaf03c9.png)

An open letter to the idiot who stole my backpack on lower charlotte this morning.

[JUST VENTING - Nobody is actually going to find this or get hurt for having it...] I hope it was worth your time. That backpack is worthless to you, but it was a collectable to me. And it is very recognizable. It is a triumph motorcycles backpack that only came with one year of bikes. It was never sold to the public, and is no longer available. But it is still worthless for resale. All that was in it was a bottle of pepsi and some random USB cables. But you did wreck my day, and my wife's. Since that was the bag that would have allowed me to get some groceries on the way home. I have given 40 bucks each to a bunch of the folks at the mission with the promise of adding another 100 bucks to the person who finds it. 200 if they have proof they made you bleed. If you would rather not get jumped by a pile of angry unhoused folks you should bring it back where you found it. Piece of shit. [Edit to add: Come on folks. This is obviously a venting post, and nobody is going to bleed over this backpack that has almost certainly already been tossed in a garbage can somewhere.]
