Yep, that's exactly what it did. Maybe there was a way to do it, say if you had a VPN, but people picked up pretty quick to ban a single IP.

A lot of the actual, serious ones that knew what they were doing got caught. Some went to lulsec to be jerks with no agenda and were caught by the Feds. All that was left were script kiddies that downloaded the Low Orbit Ion Cannon and used scripts they find online. Then they left or were overtaken by alt right idiots.

The original Anonymous are in their 30s and 40s by now. Everyone ages out.

This is the first I've heard that they're planning other engines other than the hydrogen. Which I certainly hope for, as hydrogen-only would put it out of reach for a lot of people due to how impractical it is to find a hydrogen fueling station right now.

My other concern is that they won't make many of these. I'd rather it not be a 1 of 500 that sit around in collector's garages collecting dust.

Computer usage doesn't determine that you spell it with a k.

A disk is indeed short for diskette, and disc is short for discus.

However, you can absolutely use a compact disc on a computer.

And while there are typically spinning platters or spinning magnetic strips inside hard drive disks or floppy disks, they are referred to by the whole unit as a logical disk drive that you'd see in computer.

If it's possible to find them all now, you'd see that DVDs, CDs, Blu-ray, laserdisc, are all spelled like discus. 3.5, 4.5 floppy disks, hard drives, solid state drives, tape drives, etc all spell it disk.

So for the most part, being purely observational, you can see that anything shaped like a frisbee with a hole in it will be a disc, and everything else is a disk.

I think that's slightly different than your explanation, as the terms are mutually exclusive.

It's probably more sanitary in Japan, but in the US I could see the guy sitting in the both next to me sneezing directly into the water, licking his chopsticks before attempting (and missing) some noodles. Then giving up and using his hands, that he didn't wash after coming back from the toilet.

    Kind of like buffets.

Working on IT, I see quite the spectrum. One of which was a guy who was socially lacking. He did his job ok, but in office, he didn't know how to interact with other people. He would bring his own pickles and put them in the fridge, and fish them out for a snack. Then he would get ice for his water, and go back to work. He missed a critical step of using a utensil or washing his hands, and it took a while for everyone to realize why the ice started tasting off.

Then we find that he didn't wash his hands thoroughly, and I got sick eating chips he had rummaged through earlier.

He did an ok job at his desk, but made other people uncomfortable because he couldn't pick up on enough social queues to prevent people from disliking him.

He was eventually let go for trying to fix a cable under the desk of the only girl in the office, on the day she wore a skirt. This was far and beyond extreme and I wouldn't expect most people, no matter where they fall in the spectrum, to behave this way. But the interviews are to try to suss that out. "Culture fit", I think they'd call it.

That's slate. Very sure. It's a common building material (especially roofing) where it can look and act like that.

Shale is similar. I have a lot of shale deposits nearby, and I can say that stripping paint with a paintbrush would likely break little bits off of it. It's way to fragile to do anything with it. It would be exceedingly difficult to cut it to that shape and keep it that way, as well.

They did this in 2008-09 with an 8k payment to homebuyers that wasn't a loan and didn't have to be repaid. This enabled me to but a foreclosed house and make it livable, and I've been living in it since then. It didn't raise prices in my area, because no one was buying houses anyway because regular possible couldn't afford it.

I don't know if I would have been able to get so financially situated if that payment wasn't there. I could've bought the house, but I would not have been able to fix it enough to ever stay on top of the maintenance and bills.

Would this be exactly the same situation? I dunno. But I know a similar push sure worked in the past.

I bet Everett was eating a meal with this dude, just scowling and chomping away. So this poor bastard brings up an interesting factoid to cut the silence, and Everett threatens him with assault and battery.

So far, all I know about Everett is that he doesn't like abuse of horses or dogs, but he also just doesn't like people interacting with him in general.

Which does shed light on what general morality people thought of animal treatment back then, as opposed to the often poor practices we hear about historically. I guess there's a bit of anti-intellectualism here, which is sad but understandable for the time. Almost reassuring to see that there were always anti-intellectuals trying to stop progress in their own way.

But also, I wonder what views Everett might have on race, pricing, capitalism, socialism, etc. I think he leans pro-union though. Considering the time period, that's probably fairly popular. Since really it's just the voice of the cartoonist and I assume a segment of the population. Since this was really the early 1900s, it's fascinating seeing what people thought back then.

I rooted my phone years ago and it was a chore. Once it finally worked, hardly any of my apps would run and nothing important worked because suddenly a rooted phone isn't "safe". It was such a pain in the ass to do updates and fight programs to run that I stopped. I didn't want to spend hours fixing a device that I really didn't want to think about.

I would love to install GrapheneOS and have it mostly just work. I hate having my phone locked down like it's not mine, and it's one of the reasons I won't use it for anything important over my desktop.

I imagine a lot of people are conditioned from online everything to down vote/dislike and don't engage because arguing won't change anyone's mind. Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter all encourage that type of engagement.

But banning that kind of behavior instead of a warning or a temp ban? Seems harsh. Unless banning has a different definition here.

Plus, I doubt anyone knew they were taking to a site admin.

Personally, I'm very used to hearing "but both sides" from libertarians/Republicans that want to justify voting for Trump and they aren't arguing in good faith at all. So I can kind of understand the lazy response.

Walmart.com didn't work for me on FF for about a week, and it did work on edge and chrome (still broken on FF when I disabled all my add ons). However, they fixed it and it works now. I think it was just a problem with the build of the website, and wasn't intentional because it definitely works now.

I think that's what's more likely - temp problems that could affect any browser until their web dev fixes it. Not anything malicious like intentionally blocking a browser.

And then, it's just Walmart. It's nothing that really mattered.

To add to that, I very much doubt any big company tests and verifies anything anymore.

Boeing ships planes with missing bolts and proper software, Crowdstrike pushes updates with no testing, we've all seen Microsoft push updates that break stuff because there's no testing, and that's just what comes to mind.

That's how they maximize profits - get rid of testing environments, do minimal checks, and have the one guy doing 3 jobs at once just push it to production.

I've been in IT for the banking industry for over a decade and I promise you, we're all a missed cup of coffee or a comma away from another massive outage due to a program or network misconfig.

As long as business culture is set to maximize profits for one quarter, I wouldn't trust a sales website about "verification" or "disaster recovery backups" any more than I trust a used car salesman.

That goes for Crowdstrike, but also all of their competitors.

Well, what I mean is that voting "against" a genocide across the globe could very well enable a genocide here, because it can and has happened before.

I live in a reservation, but I can drive 20 minutes to see the house my great grandmother lost to a white man because he was more important. My family tree has lots of people that died in their 20's and 30's of "Tuberculosis" and other BS reasons just to lose their land allotments, and we didn't even have headrights to our land in our tribal deal to be removed from our homeland by force.

So yes, genocide in the US is always fresh in my mind and I don't see that it'd take a lot to whip up Proud Boys and MAGA heads into doing the next round on anyone that wasn't straight, white, and Protestant. And I cannot fathom why anyone would enable Trump to do that again because of Palestine, which Trump would enable anyway.

The US was founded on genocide. Right here, on this soil. And everyone at the time went along with it in the name of Manifest Destiny. But it didn't end there. The US either directly or indirectly enabled genocide around the world through most of its history.

What happens when you can't support Kamala? And Trump wins? He absolutely supports genocide and will help it along at a scale we've yet to see in Palestine. And worse. And he'll bring problems directly to you, in your own home.

Would you trade millions of dead men, women, and children in Palestine for millions of dead men, women, and children in Palestine, other countries, and here at home as well?

Because I don't see what you have to gain by helping Trump win.

The problem is you remember eating it as a kid. Drinking lots of Coke/Pepsi/mountain dew, hostess cakes, and all that other over flavored, ultra processed food covered with sugar and salt.

Now, as you've grown, your taste buds aren't used to the barrage and it's just too much to enjoy the nostalgia. Probably because they've steadily increased the additives to make it more appealing to an increasingly desensitized palette.

I feel the same way. I eat much healthier, feel better, and save nostalgia for movies instead of food.

I'm actually surprised this is an unpopular opinion. I guess a lot of people here are early 20s? It's easier to get back into the processed enjoyment mode then, maybe.

Clearly he's got aides helping him do most stuff. That's not unheard of for any political official, but I imagine he's just going along with it like Reagan at the end of his term.

When he's by himself on a debate podium, you can see he's not doing great.

However, Trump is worse. They're two old men and you can see Biden is a calm older man slowly slipping. Trump is mad at everyone and everything, refuses help, and requires everyone to be a sycophant around him to placate his ego. The only way people get what they want out of him is to steer the bull in the direction of the China shop they want destroyed. He's an old man yelling at the TV, and we all have to hear him.

That said, one of them can, will, and has done more damage than the other. That's why I'd vote for Biden. The meme of "live Biden > dead Biden > dead Trump > live Trump" comes to mind.

Once I got my pair, I found it was individually easier to cut things out. Try it - the typical pair is molded for a right hand, so it cuts into your thumb over extended use. But the worst part is the way the blades connect - you can't see what you're cutting! You have to hold your left hand far over your body's right side, or crane your neck over your hand to see what you're cutting. Otherwise, you just guess and it looks sloppy. Keyboards, pianos, drums, doors, manual cars, all of this can be overcome. But scissors? Lefties need leftie scissors. I'm still using my pair 30 years later and they're worth their weight in gold.

    Radioactive material storage?

I inherited my grandfather's WWII compass, and had it sitting around for a long time on a shelf. I recently got a Geiger counter, and find that it's radioactive. Around 10 microsieverts/hr. Apparently they used radium paint to make them glow in the dark. I can't just throw it away, but I don't want it potentially causing a danger to others in the room. Is there some sort of lead lined box I can put it in, or some kind of prevention I can do? Is there anyone experienced with this sort of thing that can offer some advice?

Fatal Direct X Error research and fixes

If you've been crashing in FFXIV and are greeted by the error "Fatal Direct X Error: 11000002", then hopefully this will help. Fatal Direct X Error: 11000002 is, unfortunately, a GENERIC error. There's nothing specific about it, other than DirectX had a problem with the client and crashed. Square-Enix doesn't allow any debugging, and doesn't seem to be interested in digging deeper into this error. They always tell you to give them a readout of your specs, and re-verify your game files. Then they fade away if that doesn't work, because they don't know what else to do, either. There's simply too many factors in a generic error to know. I've been dealing with this for about a year. I work in the IT industry, and this is what I've found so far (I have edited this down, so not all efforts are shown). I have an AMD CPU, a Ryzen 7 3700X, and the R5700XT GPU. However, I also had this error with an Nvidia 1070. This started right around the time Endwalker launched. Things I've tried that didn't seem to make a difference: 1) Switching GPUs 2) Replacing and Upgrading memory 3) Changing timing of memory in BIOS 4) Updating BIOS 5) Updating/Downgrading GPU drivers 6) Uninstalling Adrenaline software 7) Turning off ALL other programs on a fresh boot up 8) Removing overlays (Discord, AMD Adrenaline junk, closing Steam even though it's not running through Steam) 9) Using GPU Studio drivers (AMD) 10) Using GPU MS graphics drivers 11) Disabling SMT (AMD CPU Simultaneous Multithreading) 12) Reinstalling DirectX 13) Reinstalling/re-verifying FFXIV game files Things I did that seemed to help: 1) Disabling Real Time Reflections and Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSBAO+ Quality) (these are in-game options) - turns out, SSBAO is very intensive and causes frequent crashing if you're prone to these errors already. This made the biggest difference and increased my time between crashes. 2) Capping frame rate at 1:1 instead of Unlimited. If you don't have a 1:1 option, Unlimited is likely a better choice. That's what I found on my 1070. 3) Making sure that both monitors used the same cable method (DisplayPort) and thus could have the same refresh rate. I originally used on DisplayPort and one HMDI - despite having two of the same monitors, this limited HDMI's frame rate and caused more crashes. You want all monitors on the same refresh rate, especially if you change focus from the game to something else. 4) Turn off Full Screen Enhancements in the Properties of the FFXIV launcher shortcut. 5) UNDERVOLTING the 5700XT via Adrenaline menu - if it didn't crash my system, I had less fatal directx errors this way 6) Turning off xBox gaming overlay in Windows 7) Turning off Game Mode in Windows - this supposedly "Helps achieve a more stable frame rate depending on the specific game and system" but in practice seemed to hamper FFXIV performance. Things I did that made it worse: 1) Running video on my second monitor/switching focus to that monitor 2) Switching to Windowed Mode (Fullscreen or Borderless Windowed mode worked slightly better) Clues I learned along the way: 1) Inside most cities and other high-intensity areas that Square-Enix can predict, they seem to cap fps or effects for stability. So I rarely crashed in Limsa or the Golden Saucer. However, I most commonly crashed in dungeons, raids, and trials. Phase 2 of the Ultima Weapon in the MSQ Roulette was very common. 2) After running sfc/scannow and rebooting, the next two crashes gave me a blue screen and actual memory .DMP files. They said the graphics card had "invalid fence IDs". This means that the GPU returned results either too fast, or too slow, from what the CPU was expecting and allotted. The BSODs happened much faster, about 10-20 minutes into play. Not like a slow buildup of hours like before. This time, it seemed to indicate that something was checking for data slower than the GPU could push out results. Meaning, the GPU was processing too fast for its own good. So I undervolted the GPU. I have seemed to stay more stable, but this didn't fix the problem completely. 3) I also had a problem with sound cutout in Frontlines when playing Seal Rock - and it wouldn't restart even if I restarted my audio services. Turns out, FFXIV uses a lower-level access method to access the sound drivers directly instead of going through Windows services. This is controlled by "exclusive access" which you can actually see in your sound options in Windows. You want FFXIV to have exclusive access. And "Give Priority". I had to disable my monitors as audio devices in Device Manager (DisplayPort can send audio, like HDMI). Even though they had no speakers, FFXIV was momentarily confused on which device to use. It wouldn't repair itself until I closed and reopened the game. I disabled my GPU from being an audio source. This left me with my motherboard's Realtech driver as the sole source of audio, so there was no more confusion. I also turned off my Gamepad options in the FFXIV menu, which apparently also does something with audio. Why do I bring this up? Because I suspect the video runs the same way - bypassing Windows control. So when you use all these new Windows features, they just interfere with communication between the game and your hardware. Turning off as much of it as possible is ideal. If you troubleshoot with that in mind, you'll likely have better success. My solution: I tested again by switching graphics cards. I put my old 1070 card back in, and haven't crashed since, even when I turn on Real Time Reflections and SSAO again. The frame rate suffers, but I can tell that it renders better. Real Time Reflections specifically looks better than with the AMD setup. While I believe that this is not a problem exclusive to AMD GPUs or even the 5700xt, it does seem like it exacerbates the problem. The RX5700xt just has poor drivers and poor hardware (the GPU screws can't get tight enough to hold the heatsink on fully). I think my other configuration issues like the two different cables causing two different refresh rates caused my crashes on the 1070 initially. In the end, I bought another graphics card (4070) and haven't had an issue. I suspect other AMD cards would probably be ok as well, if their drivers were written properly. There's a lot of problems with the RX5700xt physically (short screws can't keep the heat sink on the chip well) and driver-wise. I hope this helps somone else out there!
