Most electric cars only have 1 gear and it's always engaged. If you put the car in reverse, it uses the same gear, but the motor spins the other way.

Even in neutral the motor still spins when the wheels are turned, it just doesn't output any power to the wheels.

There is a difference between climate concern, where you desperately want to do anything to fix the climate problems, and climate anxiety, where you are so overwhelmed by the climate issues that it interferes with your ability to take any action.

I suspect this study is focusing only on the latter.

It depends on a lot of factors including the battery chemistry.

NMC (Lithium ion) batteries are common in high performance cars and older EVs. They should be kept between 20% and 80% charge for normal use. 60% is ideal for storage, but anywhere in that range will do.

LFP (Lithium ion) batteries are common in cheaper and newer EVs. They don't have a problem with being stored at 100%, and do have issues with not being regularly charged to 100% (monitoring gets less accurate over time until fully charged again), so leaving it at 100% is fine.

Lead acid (particularly calcium) batteries get damaged when discharged too much, so it's fairly important to keep them topped up. If you are leaving the car for a long time, it could be worthwhile to connect a trickle charger to the 12V battery to prevent the car's computer from gradually draining the battery. Some cars will top up the 12V battery from the high voltage battery if left for a while, so this may not be needed.

While I have little experience with low temperatures, I suspect that the car will be fine if left as stated above. The battery shouldn't get damaged by low temperature storage, and shouldn't lose much charge over time. Just don't expect full performance immediately after returning to it.

Be aware that an underpowered or stuck stepper motor can "skip", causing the position data to be incorrect.

A servo motor has active feedback, so doesn't have this issue. Servos do have their own drawbacks too, so they are not always a suitable replacement.

You can always try Linux risk free in a virtual machine like VirtualBox.

If you like what you see, and you have any valuable data backed-up, you can try dual booting. That way you get to use Linux as your primary operating system, but can switch back and forth as much as needed.

I found I was dual booting Windows and Linux for over 3 years before I was comfortable enough to stop using Windows entirely. Switching to Linux doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing approach. You can take it as slow as you want.

The surgeons handle this regularly, it's routine for them. You get to relax and let them manage everything.

I went through lung surgery a few years ago and coped by deciding that I could trust the surgeons (and other medical professionals) completely. They know what they are doing, and they have procedures in place to make sure everything goes well.

Learning to consciously relax and trust everyone around you is a something that takes constant effort, but in my opinion, it's worth it.

My surgery went well, no complications, and my recovery was exactly on schedule.

An SUV is very different from a compact car. Small cars tend to have better visibility and maneuverability, and are just easier to drive. If it's with your budget, an electric car is also easier to drive (and cheaper overall) because you don't have to worry about gears.

The first few lessons will be overwhelming, particularly with stickshift. As you practice, you'll start doing more things without thinking, like when you put your foot down while stopping on a bike. I bet you haven't thought about that for a few years.

Just take it slow, and trust that the instructor will not push you beyond your limits. After a few months/years you'll wonder why you thought driving was even difficult.

If it were a reasonable option, I'd pick the train every time.

If you are worried, a qualified medical practitioner is always more reliable than a web forum.

Insufficient or poor quality sleep can cause problems with attention and memory, and can exacerbate existing conditions.

Poor sleep could be caused by a medical condition (sleep apnoea), or psychological (stress). Often stress can be hard to identify, particularly if it's long term stress.

Again, this might not be your problem, and finding the right doctor who actually listens to you is important. Don't be afraid to try more than 1 doctor if the first makes you uncomfortable.

South Australia has a huge amount of solar and wind, but relativity little storage, and basically no renewable base load (hydro, geothermal, nuclear). While the average renewable energy usage is fairly high, the instantaneous renewable usage can drop to almost 0 some days.

Solutions are being implemented, and the renewable mix is gradually improving.

Lithium batteries scale power and capacity at the same time. Flow batteries can scale power and capacity independently.

The advantage of flow batteries is that they can have enormous capacities without the added cost of upgrading the power, making it ideal for grid scale storage.

Even if this new flow battery reaches the energy density of a lithium battery, and can output sufficient power, it would still need to reach price parity to be competitive.

Flow batteries are great for long duration storage, but not good for high power delivery.

This means they will work far better as grid storage than as EV batteries.

Most engines are less than 30% efficient at producing movement. The majority of the energy is lost as heat.

Thermodynamics tells us that pretty much all energy ends up as heat. In a closed system, any device that uses energy is 100% efficient at making heat. A 1000W computer will make exactly as much heat as a 1000W heater.

A 100% efficient engine can only exist if the desired output is heat, thus making it a pretty useless engine. Also, in a closed system, the exhaust cannot leave.

    I got a V2G charger!

I've been waiting for 2 years, and I finally got a Wallbox Quasar. I believe I'm the second person in Australia to get one (ignoring government trials and business installs). My thoughts so far: The ability to set how fast the car charges/discharges is nice. The app lets you set a maximum and minimum battery level. I've currently got it set up 20% - 85%. I'll probably adjust this as I learn more. You can set schedules for charging and discharging. There is no option to set the rate in the schedule. Instead it uses the rate currently set in the app. This is fine if you just want to schedule the times, but frustrating if you want multiple schedules with different charge rates. There isn't a way to automate the charger with wholesale prices in Australia yet. Amber (a wholesale energy provider) is currently working on this. This is an early model of V2G charger without all the features you might expect. The Quasar is not able to operate during a blackout. This is mostly because it doesn't have the ability to disconnect from the grid (powering the entire grid during a blackout is not a good idea). The Quasar 2 (not yet released) will have this feature. The minimum charge/discharge rate is 6A (1.4kW). No-one has been able to tell me why this limitation exists. If the house is using less than 6A, the Quasar will be exporting the excess to the grid. It means that the Quasar is not suitable for powering the home unless a house battery can soak up the excess. I'm hoping that future V2G chargers will not have a minimum rate. South Australia has a lot of renewable energy and not a lot of storage. This has caused variable wholesale energy prices ranging from -15c/kWh to 90c/kWh, with rare spikes to $20/kWh. Having access to the 50kWh (usable) car battery provides a lot of opportunities to make money from the grid, while also assisting with grid stability. Most days only have a saving of $2, but the occasional day with price spikes can make over $40. I'm hoping to have a net negative energy bill over the next year.
