And I was just asking yesterday what would you feel if someone evil used your FOSS software: https://lemmy.world/post/16898871
I just learned that Nmap is almost GPL except that they revoked the license specifically for SCO group for their [SCO–Linux disputes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCO%E2%80%93Linux_disputes). This got me thinking, what do open source programmers think of evil companies or horrible people using their software? Don't get me wrong, FOSS software by its nature can't be controlled or strictly prevented of being used. But in case of companies like SCO, that is a thing that at least can cause them headache and they risk getting into legal trouble. A programmer for example can modify GPL to make so that his software can't be used by Microsoft or Facebook, but it is GPL for everybody else.

git rekt
I found out that this tool http://www.convertlit.com/ provides a program with a funny name. I wonder if there are similar programs with offensive names or puns like this one. For example, I remember reading a `fortune` output saying something along the lines of ```sh man Why did you get divorced? man: Too many arguments. ``` And of course, there is the cliche `touch grass`.
It'd be interesting to find similar one for the Fediverse.

Everyone is talking about rm -rf /
and damage to storage drives, but I read somewhere about EFI variables having something to do with bricking the computer. If this is possible, then it's a lot more damage than just disk drives.
Edit: this is interesting SE post https://superuser.com/questions/313850

Yet another reminder that the cloud is just a fancy name for someone else's computer.
I found this old project from 2018 that redesigned Reddit into a frontend similar to Outlook. Would be fun to see this on Lemmy especially since we have a lot of frontends.

Woah. Interesting setup. Looks like a PinePhone with 3D-printed case. But what about the keyboard? and the original Android status bar?
If your employer forced you to either use Google or Microsoft or some other tech company (Apple, Samsung, etc.) what would be a better choice? Which company is more compliant in terms of privacy or generally better and why? I was thinking about Google since there were new regulations enforced by government and at least I don't have to pay for Google Docs, unlike Microsoft where I pay and I'm still spied on.

I'm not sure I'd call it a problem. In the end it's the developers' choice.
Btw, I think this applies in general to opinionated software. Suckless is just a subset of that.

Great prompt OP. It's great to reflect and share those moments.
For me it's a management trick that I realized after having my files (computer ones and physical ones) all over the place.
You don't have to have a file for everything. Instead create a dump.txt file in every directory instead of having few paragraphs scattered in files.
This way I separate "organizing files" from actually typing out my thoughts.
Looks like [this is still not implemented](https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21193). But are there Android apps with this feature?

Nice. This feature is similar to Android wallpaper color theming.
And I thought Xorg already had this feature in Xresources, but apps do not respect it.

Was there an alternative adjective to "clockwise" other than "the rotation you take around left hand"? Also, how did all watch companies around the world agree on what the direction of "clockwise" is?
I think this is one of the best ways to make the Fediverse mature. Are there subs or Mastodon account for recommending content or showing what's currently popular in the Fediverse?

I hate when the only way to get in touch with people is to use a shitty app like it.
The way I'm used to it is: 1. Wake up 2. Breakfast 3. Brush teeth. Having it as 1, 3, 2 doesn't make sense for me.
Seems to me that the Fediverse is closest thing now that's working on accomplishing his dreams. His ideals leveraging technology to create a voice for people... RIP.

Yes. I don't think Reddit needed marketing in its early days. It was mostly spread by people with their content.
That's why I say the best way to promote Lemmy is just to post links of interesting content.
It would be interesting to see Nitter integrated in a Mastodon instance. There are some accounts in Twitter worth following in all this noise, and getting their feed natively in Mastodon would be super nice without all the ads and algorithm crap.
This is a FAQ but is there a summary like this: * To upvote a Lemmy post from Mastodon, add to favorite(?) * To see a Mastodon post from Lemmy: not possible(?) * To post from Mastodon to Lemmy * To post from Lemmy to Mastodon: the sublemmy has a Mastodon account just follow it. * To post from PixelFed to Lemmy? * To post from Lemmy to PixelFed: not possible (?) * ...
I feel this way, posts can be hijacked after becoming trendy to be replaced with ads, or there could be other ways to exploit this. If there was a title in the typo, then it's easy to delete the post and re-publish it. But what could be use cases of having to edit a post title after publishing? Just add edits in the post body. What do you think?
Don't get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the switch?
Librewolf is great, but now some stupid sites require chromium-based browsers to work. E.g: Microsoft teams. * Ungoogled chromium? problem is that it's worse in fingerprinting compared to Brave. See: https://privacytests.org/ * Brave: bloated and filled with unnecessary features. Why isn't there a Brave fork yet that gets rid of the crypto junk?
