A number of homeless are indeed are victims of our terrible socio-economic system. However I have heard many homeless outreach workers say the same thing "The ones who stay homeless are the ones who stay addicted". Addiction is a serious issue and the challenge of beating it is nothing we should dismiss, however it is clear some people end up homeless due to drugs and stay homeless due to a refusal to get clean. When your life is centered around just getting high, you won't care much about anything else. All the horrors of living on the street disappear once you get your fix, and some people are okay living like that.

I guess I'm writing all this to say that homelessness is a very complex and nuanced issue. They aren't all victims, they aren't all criminals, they aren't all mentally ill, they aren't all addicts, and for some its the only life they've ever known.

This is why the conversation around homelessness is so difficult. People just latch onto their idea of what being homeless is then build their argument from there, dismissing the remaining context of the concept.

I highly suggest doing homeless outreach to broaden your perspective on the matter (look up a local Food Not Bombs group if you live in a city!). If that isn't something you'd like to do, there are plenty of videos on youtube that give you more insight into the homelessness experience. Obviously watch out for the videos that treat living on the streets as a spectacle or oddity, I absolutely hate these videos because they serve to shock and entertain, not educate.

This is a much more legalese take, I feel like some folks would disagree in terms of the spirit of wage theft vs the letter of the concept. I like it though, I appreciate it, I appreciate you.

That is wild, so many salary jobs act like you should work more than 40 hours. I even had a manager that said upper level employees should be willing to work more than 40 hours per week. What a cock wart.

    What is wage theft exactly?

I'm not like a super political person, and from my understanding its the idea that if I make a $10 thing for the bossman, but only get $1 that is wage theft? But like, when I took the job I knew how much I was going to make? Or is it like, people are literally not getting their paychecks? I'm slightly inebreated, lazy, and don't want my algorithms to start becoming politically charged from googling and youtubing this. I'm already collapse aware and my mental health is ultra fragile. Help me Lemmy wan kenobi, you're my only hope.

True love is actually a great wish. Money runs out, the earth doesn't have the resources to power an x-wing, super dude can't do anything super or else society will now expect him to be Superman, which is a huge responsibility anyone reasonable would want. But TRUE LOVE, the fucking stuff from Disney movies? I'd take that in a heartbeat, then proceed to do a lewd photoshoot with my partner on the defunct x-wing.

I really like this idea, so uh here is my resume??

I'm a software developer who fell in love with teaching. Unfortunately many companies providing an education in writing code are scams, and I'm sad to say I'm working for one right now. I've been playing with the idea of having free "learn to code" streams, to give people the education without ripping them off. I also am interested in getting into music production ( I have a year of piano lessons under my belt! humble beginnings lol), and I have an eccentric art style if there is a desire for visuals that don't feel derivative and samey like most modern art efforts. Attached is my most recent art piece. I'm not just interested in teaching, really I want to just find other people who also enjoy creating and sharing information. I don't care about being rich or going viral. I just want a social ecosystem where "Wouldn't it be cool if..." is likely to be followed up by "Yeah, we should try it", or "No I already attempted that, but here is what I learned." Anyways I'm here to help how I can!

Can anyone else feel sensations in their brain?

Last time I checked there aren't nerve endings in our brain, so it should be impossible to feel sensations in my brain. However, at random times during my life, like seeing the plot twist in Fight Club for example, I've felt feelings in my brain. I just felt it again now while doing some intense introspection, and I just wanted to see if anyone else has this happen?

    Mini Rant:

When you think about it software development is a relatively young profession compared to medicine, law, construction, public services, the arts, and so on. This is why modern tech kind of sucks despite being so cool, I say we are in the "Hey maybe we shouldn't build our huts right on the river" phase of writing code, still figuring out problems that will appear mind numbingly simple in the future.

Another issue is the fact that tech builds on itself and its flaws can be painted over with abstractions, while the aforementioned professions can't get away with being subpar for too long. So the full metaphor really is after the river floods we build on top of the ruins and claim victory because we are slightly more elevated and will take less damage during the next flood.

The secret to better tech is rebuilding everything from scratch. The internet wasn't designed with security and bad actors in mind. Plenty of corporations are running a Frankenstein system that contains code older than most millennials, botched modernization efforts, buzzword laden over-engineered applications, and bugs that aren't features just permanent residents in your code base.

....But there is profiteering to contend with, good code takes time, time is money, good code is expensive. "Good enough" code is easy to write, so its better for the bottom line.

In the end it really is....

Developer: "Hey the river flooded and our huts were demolished, we should move to higher ground and build there"

Corporate Leadership: "No that is too expensive, just build on the ruins and next flood we should be safer, oh also you're laid off"

I know you didn't ask for this, but its been on my mind for a while and I felt like this was a good time to get this out of my head haha

Best way to go about getting CompTIA certifications?

I'm looking to get the A+ and Networking certs only because I'll probably be laid off soon and I want to make myself even more marketable. Right now I'm a software developer with 8 years of Java experience, and from my initial studying I think the certifications shouldn't be too hard. However, I may not have the time (or money) to make multiple attempts, so I was wondering if anyone had any good resources tailored to folks who are already technical to help me study. I know some folks might say I don't need them, but my resume needs more buzzwords to get picked up by recruiters and hiring managers, and I'm open to all kinds of work as long as it keeps a roof over my family's head.

Any recommendations for a career change?

I spent 8 years doing Java development, layoffs are coming soon (my second time this year! 😊), I know how hard it is to get a job out there, and I'm tired of Java. So I was wondering if anyone had any advice for pointing my career in a new direction. I'd like there to be some technical aspect to it still, which is why I am posting here instead of elsewhere. Right now I'm really into Lua, Vue.js, and am considering picking up CompTIA and AWS certifications just to make myself more marketable. I have good people skills too, so if a career involves talking more than coding I'll be okay with that. I spent part of this year teaching programming and loved it (but due to the state of the industry many academic businesses are closing down). Or you know, should I sell my home and just go live in the woods until I die of malnutrition because at this rate we'll all end up there anyways?

Lua "classes" or closures as classes?

Hey all, I'm learning Lua and come from a Java background, and have been diving deep into Lua "classes". Realizing that a Lua "class" is just some clever syntactic sugar, and lacks encapsulation, I've found that closures can act like a Java class and protect it's state. An added bonus is my muscle memory won't struggle with : vs . for function calls, a pitfall I've already wasted time debugging. I'm new to all this though, is there anything I'm missing? Is a Lua "class" with self and : a better choice than using a closure like a class?

Did anyone else notice wierd subs hitting the front page before the API changes?

(by wierd, I mean strange for reddit) Namely science uncensored and couples memes. Couples memes fell of really quickly, probably because most folks are single I suppose and had no stomach to see happy couples. Then there is science uncensored, which sounds like a muskian "free speech" attempt. Also am I ugly, and true rate me got popular really quickly. I noticed this about a month ago, before the protests? I'm no internet historian so I may be off (also a stoner, so there is that), and I'm not combing through reddit to fact check myself so correct me if I've caught the stupid. I've been using reddit for about 4 or so years and I've never seen so many new subs get so popular in such a short amount of time. * puts on tin foil hat * Part of me feels like reddit is about to become a propaganda machine. Maybe the couples meme sub was an attempt at encouraging people to procreate. "Wow look at those happy couples I want that!", was probably the intended effect. Science uncensored speaks for itself, sure reddit was left leaning, but every once and a while an article would hit the front page that challenged the status quo of the left (my reference is a post about weed not being so amazing, see above comment about me not being an internet historian), so I don't think there was a dire need for a science sub without "political censorship". True rate me and am I ugly are PG thirst traps. Lonely nerds love to comment on women, white night, degrade, its easy bait (my apologies if you're a lonely nerd). All of the posts from these subs that hit the front page had attractive women, I never read the comments, I don't need to read the comments. Maybe the comments were wonderful, but hey I was raised by the internet so I think I'm right here. Anyways, before I take of my foil cap. I really think there is some weird corporate propagandizing going on. Between twitter and reddit, I think there is a concerted attempt to control information online. Or maybe this is all an attempt to kill net neutrality, from the inside. * takes off tin foil hat * I never posted often on reddit because folks are mean there, or stupid, or both. I'm hoping for a different experience on lemmy. I know my ideas are silly, but silly things make life fun. Won't you be silly with me darling?
