Tbf though this is non-lethal stuff. And I don't know that much about American police, but maybe it's not such a bad idea universities don't let them handle crowd control? I hear they don't have the best track record.

(I get that in an ideal world universities shouldn't arm themselves against their students, but come on, Jeff from the economics department is a real douchebag, and ever since he has been hanging around with those extremists he is becoming more and more unhinged)

They're made by a local supermarket chain here in Europe, one of their organic brands. They use sunflower oil instead of palm oil, and taste fantastic. Apart from that, just sugar, hazelnuts, cocoa, lecithin and vanilla. Maybe check organic supermarkets in your area?

I think it's partly leftover dribble from the inane Gaia "theory" that was so strong in hippie circles. Everything natural (like bacteria in milk) is good, and you know, gut bacteria, yogurt, 's all good, right?

Combine that with "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" beliefs that they don't realize come from right wing nuts and you got a perfect diarrhea inducing cocktail that we all get to pay for with our taxes and our nerves.

It will get better. Don't run away from the pain, feel it. Don't give yourself a deadline, just allow yourself to feel shitty, and change will come on its own, even if it takes years.

I have been in many relationships with people that are ugly according to conventional beauty standards, and for me the deciding factor about attractiveness was not the genetics, but how people treat their body and how they feel for it.

Fat people often can't get slim from sport, but man, cuddling a fat body that is strong and healthy and loved by its owner is so much more attractive. Just do whatever sport is fun for you, boxing, cycling, swimming, whatever. Have fun and break into sweats and eat well, get those proteins, build those muscles.

I promise it gets better and you can absolutely feel like a completely new person, not just because of the sport, but because of how your psyche develops on its own if you don't run away from the pain.

Stay married for the health insurance, everybody start seeing other people. Your wife's depression is (probably) not your responsibility. Tell your daughter (and each other) love is not as simple as made out in movies, but can be much more. Everyone's happiness is more important than following traditional ways. Always stay respectful towards everyone involved.

This is advice from a childless slut. You would probably be foolish to follow it.

Donating a gaming PC, how can I let them try my games in a safe way?

Hey guys, so I posted here a few weeks ago, with the idea of donating a gaming PC to a nursing home. I talked to someone in charge there today, this might actually happen. Thing is, to try this out I would probably have to supply the software (Microsoft Flight Simulator being the most important now.) As I understand it, you can only use the Flight Simulator with a Microsoft account. If I let them use my own account, that would mean a PC with my logged in account would be standing around there in the open, for anyone to access. Does anyone have any idea how to approach this in a safe manner? I wish I could just buy a physical copy and let them have it for a while, before they buy their own. But even those need a connected Microsoft account nowadays, it seems. Was also thinking of buying a used Xbox Series S (this might become the long term solution anyway), but same issue with the account, I believe. (Man, modern gaming keeps finding ways to be annoying sometimes.) P.S. If you have great game recommendations for octogenarians, bring them on!

Could a gaming PC be a good thing in a nursing home?

Recently talked to a 90+ year old man in a park in front of his nursing home, guy is a former RC plane enthusiast. Can't do anything now because of his age, though. Bored all the time, sitting in the park is his highlight. Thinking of donating an old gaming PC that can somewhat run the Microsoft flight simulator. Would that be a good idea? Can the average 80-90 year old use that at all, just speaking sensorically and motor skill wise? Are there any other thoughts you have on that idea?

Does Microsoft have the power to pull the plug on Linux gaming?

So I'm talking about playing previously Windows-only games on Linux, e.g. via proton. I don't know about the libraries etc that are used - is it possible for Microsoft to use some legal voodoo, for example, to suddenly end it all, and make the use of their libraries illegal (if they belong to Microsoft in the first place)? Or could there be other ways of interference?

Alexa should react to short, weird sounds like glottal stops

I think it's silly to speak in full sentences to home assistants, when I really just use 5 commands most of the time. It would be snappier to make weird sounds, produced by snapping ones tongue e.g., like some African tribes use in their languages. Or any other weird, short sounds. It might be more satisfying to use, and probably funnier. Also, over the course of a few years this might find its way into everyday spoken language. Which would be wonderfully dystopian and maybe funny.

Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

Seriously. I don't want to install something on my phone when the dev is just using a WebView, if that's what it's called. When the app is basically just a website with the browser hidden. What's the reason for that? To attach the customer? To sell the app for money? Is there more ad revenue that way? Do you reach more people? (Are there any good reasons for it, too? Security, maybe?)

Is public transport in the USA owned by car makers?

I once heard that in the middle of 20th century, public transportation in the USA was widely privatized and bought by automotive manufacturers, and then wilfully left to rot, so that people would buy more cars. However, I can't find anything backing that up. Do you know whether that's true, and where I can find some sources for that?

What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don't recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn't cut it, either. The best thing would be several randomness sliders. One for randomness in bands, the other for randnomness of their songs, one for genres. Please tell me some music service has implemented something like that. I am dying over here.

    Understanding cross-instance commenting

So I commented on a post on lemmy.world, and somebody from lemmy.ml replied to my comment. I was finally able to reply to their comment in turn by using the reply symbol under their post in my notifications. I couldn't reply before because clicking on their comment took me over to lemmy.ml and I thought I would be able to sign in with my credentials from here and post, but I think I understand now that that isn't possible. Every instance has its own registered users and you can't cross-post, you can only reply on the federated thread on your own instance and wait for it to be federated over to the user from the other side. When I look at their post now, my comment shows up on lemmy.ml. So the thread was federated over to lemmy.ml from here, I guess? I have not registered on lemmy.ml, just on lemmy.world. Did I comment on lemmy.world and it got federated over to .ml? Because I can't comment on the post on lemmy.ml, but that's expected I guess, since I'm only registered here. Does this make sense? Sorry if I'm just blabbering on here, but I'm still a bit confused about how all of this works exactly. Typing this out helps me understand this. Is anybody facing similar issues of not quite understanding what they're doing? I will attach a screenshot. ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/a81c2c1d-be36-4390-bde6-f8346c51386e.jpeg)
