So that's why "straight on" and "on the right" are the maddeningly confusable "a derecha" and "en derecho". Such a pain when following directions.

    Placebo buttons.

Some appliances like elevators or traffic crossings cycle automatically, but they still have (non-functional) buttons. If the buttons are removed, people complain that the wait is too long. Let them push a button while they wait, and they'll think it's much quicker.

I meant accessibility in the sense of, how difficult/messy/undignified is it to eat. But yes that too. I thought coconuts were brittle, and grapefruit were inedibly sour until I tried some in their country of origin.

    • NO OTHER CONTROLS!

Start/stop? Use the door. Clear? Turn back the dial. Power settings? Full power, wait, repeat. Everything else? Nobody uses it, nobody knows what it does, nobody kept the instructions. Get rid of it.

I've never heard of Chester cheese. There's Cheshire cheese, but that's quite crumbly and wouldn't hold up to being packaged like this. You might also be thinking of cheddar. A genuine cheddar would be too brittle, but in modern marketing, cheddar is often shorthand for any homogenous, yellow cheese. So this stuff might be described as cheddar on the packet.

I think this stuff is more of a cheese-flavoured sauce, that they inject into the bags and leave to set. It's more an invention of the convenience food industry, than any culinary tradition.

Yeah, I think doing the longer, standardized tests would mostly just be going over the same points again in slightly different wording. And the drop in responses over time suggests that one question per day might be a bit too much.

There's a couple of tests that cover slightly different ground. There's one about masking that I think is not too long. Also one about monotropic attention, and I think one about demand avoidance. I'm going to think about it and leave some breathing room before jumping in with another.

[(first post)](https://sh.itjust.works/post/9023136) Thanks to everybody who took part. Now it's time to see the results. I've counted up everyone's agreements and disagreements (using some amount of _reading between the lines_. I didn't count any that were unclear). The 'autistic' answer for each statement is indicated with **bold type**: statement | agree | disagree ---|---|--- I often notice small sounds when others do not. | **23** | 0 When I’m reading a story, I find it difficult to work out the characters’ intentions.|**5**|1 I find it easy to "read between the lines" when someone is talking to me.|0|**6** I usually concentrate more on the whole picture, rather than the small details.|0|**4** I know how to tell if someone listening to me is getting bored.|2|**4** I find it easy to do more than one thing at once.|1|**4** I find it easy to work out what someone is thinking or feeling just by looking at their face.|1|**5** If there is an interruption, I can switch back to what I was doing very quickly.|3|**4** I like to collect information about categories of things.|**5**|2 I find it difficult to work out people’s intentions.|**4**|0 So, lemmy.world/autism picked the autistic option every time and scored a perfect 10/10. Interestingly, if we weight it proportionately according to how many picked each option, we only get 6.2, barely over the threshold. Scores of 6 or over indicate possible autism spectrum disorder, so lemmy.world/autism should seriously consider the possibility that they may be autistic. (Personally, I got 8. Go me!) My intentions for running this test was it would be interesting and fun, and I think it was (One respondent was concerned I might have some undisclosed professional interest - I don't, but thanks for looking out for the community). I think the main takeaway is that interpreting self-report questions can be really hard. Should I do another? If so, should I do anything differently?

For those 'people often say...' questions, there's huge cultural variations in how acceptable it is to even talk about one's personal traits. 'people say I am very blunt' - sorry I don't know anyone blunt enough to say that.

In your case, I think you'd answer Agree for this question. It's not up to you to tease out if it's the result of condition X or condition Y. And your health provider shouldn't be making that determination based purely on which option you picked on a self-report questionnaire.

We already had a question about reading subtext, so I guess this one is more about the underlying motivations.

Anyway in the for column, there's been times when I've been scammed or taken advantage of. And I've had some "[years later]... Ohhh! She was flirting with me" moments.

In against, I think I'm not bad at spotting when someone is masking distress or discomfort (tho I don't always know what to do with that information). And out of meatspace, with time to process, I'm much better at spotting bad actors.

How do you copy+paste a user handle?

There is (as far as I know) no easy way to copy a user handle to mention them in a post or comment. There isn't a UI element or menu option on a post to do this. I can go to their just page and use the share button, but then I get (for example): https://lemmy.guide/link?target=@zachatrocity@sh.itjust.works That's not Zach's instance, it's mine. To get the user handle I'd have to edit out the URL part, and change to the correct instance @zachatrocity@lemmy.world. Is that how it's supposed to work? Is the instance change thing a bug? Is there a better way I don't know about?

I'm often reminded of a SpaceX render they put up on the 'Tube back when they were still working out the reusability thing. Commenters had a lot of questions about how the particular flight plan impacted on their fuel budget. And so, Elon himself waded in with the answers. Except he was talking about the dollar price it cost to buy the fuel. He was like 'why are you worried about fuel, it's not that expensive, guys' because he didn't understand the questions. He didn't understand why the amount of fuel and the mass of the fuel would be significant to anybody. Guys, I think he doesn't understand the rocket equation. He doesn't understand the central problem of rocketry. I think the guy might be full of it.

I had a thought about "me Fern Brady me Fern Brady"

In Fern Brady's song, she says John Kearns is obsequious and Dara is an imbecile. But, then when they talk about it in the studio she says John isn't obsequious but Dara is. So then why did she write the song that way? My thought was: if she calls Dara obsequious, then she has to call John an imbecile*. At the time she still didn't know that John had been purposefully trying to lose in the team task. Maybe she suspected he had genuine cognitive impairments, and it wouldn't be ok to joke about it? (*There were also 2 other teammates, and the 2 hosts that she could have substituted into that line. My thinking here is that, since she had already worked with 2 of the teammates, she felt it was right for the song that they were the ones to get dissed individually.)

Let's Play AQ-10 • When I’m reading a story, I find it difficult to work out the characters’ intentions

This is one of a series of discussion posts based on questions from the AQ-10 autism test. ## 2. Let's Play AQ-10 • I often notice small sounds when others do not

I thought it could be fun/interesting to go through an autism test question by question, and see what resonates with people, and how we approach thinking about the questions. So to start, here's question 1 of the AQ-10. --- ## 1. Culture Starship spotter thread

You know The Culture novels by Iain M Banks, right? How it has sentient starships that choose ironic names for themselves like these; - Sanctioned Parts List - So Much For Subtlety - All Through With This Niceness And Negotiation Stuff - Attitude Adjuster - Of Course I Still Love You - Funny, It Worked Last Time... Well, if you pay attention, you can notice starships hiding in plain sight all around you. Here's a few from recent years; - Alternative Facts - Sigma Grindset - The Woke Mind Virus Is Either Defeated Or Nothing Else Matters - Girlboss - Basket Of Deplorables - Are We The Baddies? - I Am Not A Robot (Click To Confirm) In this thread I want to know; what starship names have you spotted in the wild?

Do you need an adult autism diagnosis? The professionals say "¯\_(ツ)_/¯ iunno? U tell me"

My doctor ordered me a pack of forms and questionnaires to request an assessment for adult autism. In amongst the medical histories and self assessments, this question stuck out; >it is important to know that not everyone who is referred to our service will have a diagnosis of autism confirmed. In the space below, tell us how you think having an autism diagnosis confirmed, or not, might impact on you and your life What's going on here? Do you get asked this for other conditions? We're a community that typically struggles to read between the lines, so I could be way off, but this feels grudging to me. It's a question that says - what's the point of us even offering this service, and why are you so special that we should waste our time on you?

Of course you want Björk to talk to you about fungi. That's like, a basic human need. (Link is to a trailer for an IMAX movie - Fungi : The Web of Life)

Some image posts display as external links

Look at this post https://sh.itjust.works/post/5863836 It's just a regular image post, hosted on the instance server, but it displays as an external link, & you have to click through to view it. Earlier, similarly formatted posts to the same community display as normal image posts. The only difference is that the newer posts include an additional ?format=jpg parameter. I'm guessing this is throwing off the detection of an image post.

GIFs animate in thumbnail regardless of animation option

As title. There's an option in the settings menu to disable animations. However GIF image posts animate in thumbnail view regardless.

Display of banned users and removed communities

The user @Angled@lemmy.world has been banned, and their absurd list of communities are (I think?) removed, but you would not know that looking at their user page. This maybe because they were a lemmy.world user, and I'm viewing from a sh.itjust.works account. I'm not altogether clear to what extent this is a app issue/instance issue/this particular account issue. - on liftoff, I see a long list of modded communities with various names - on the lemmy.world web interface, I see a note that the user is banned, and most (but not all) of their communities are listed as 'serverhold' - on the sh.itjust.works web interface, there's no note that the user is banned, but also no modded communities
