Okay so I'm already close to wanting to leave Lemmy

Yeah I'm only one person here, whatever, big deal. Anywho, it's annoying to me that I'm inches away from leaving Lemmy because it's instability right now is getting bothersome to use it. People have told me that there are other instances but the dealbreaker for me is to use yet more logins to use them, some of which may take time to get into because some lemmy servers have a review team that has to look over some things before allowing you in. Then, from that, it's wonderful to run into and be confronted by shitty people who behave too similarly to the assholes I'd run across on Reddit. With their dishonest takes, participating in bad faith, their brigading and all that. We're supposed to be, mostly, done with this Reddit shit but I feel like overtime, it'll just all be contaminated with Reddit shit that we don't need more of. I've only been on here for over a week and my hopes are considerably low. My only options right now is to simply once again go back to Reddit and just tolerate the shit there while wishing death on the nobodies that spend their waking hour on just shitposting on others for their own cynical amusement because their mothers forgot to swallow. And the other is to just simply water down my usage of the other social media platforms that I am on because this whole social media thing is getting stupidly silly and ridiculous as it is.

You're painting a target on your back when you proclaim that you're a Women-Owned, Black-Owned business .etc

Majority of us don't really care, it's until you decided to make it a means to brand your business as minority owned is you trying to make us care about it. Your product or service is what should be the one speaking about whether your business is worth supporting, not who you support and what community. That's a huge part of, you know - business. Who you decide to serve or not is another thing but that's not what this is about.

So I have a vague understanding of this.

I tried going to another server when I read something about a lemmy instance turning down FB. I go there and I'm prompted to make yet another account to use that instance.

Does this mean, that I need to make a new log-in per instance, per server just to use it? If so, that's entirely exhausting for me to keep track and I already have an abundance of accounts as is, to where I had to make a document that records every account with every password. We need an internet where it's less of that.

It's okay to still use these sites, I'll admit that right now, I have a reddit account again. But that's out of spite for the simple fact that I refuse to have my voice be silenced. I may have been banned multiple times on subreddits and reddit itself for petty dumb opinionated reasons (no I'm not a racist, sexist, bigot...). But, I kept coming back because again, I refused to be silenced and let them have the 'victory' of snuffing a voice out.

It's another thing though, to have a Reddit account and going around to people wanting to be done with Reddit, by trying to convince and lure them into coming back on here. People have made up their mind about Reddit and everything that has happened within the past two weeks, cemented those choices. Quite frankly, if you ask me, getting blown up over the porn/NSFW situation is a little silly in comparison to the third party issue.

People have an assortment of reasons to still use these platforms, it's fine, except the ones who're Pro-Spez, Pro-Musk .etc Then I say - you have problems.

Loved your community when I was on Reddit. I remembered when it used to be absurd having to wait an entire month just to even post there. r-gaming is some of the most toxic gaming-based subreddits on there. The mods are ban-happy on that subreddit if you're not regurgitating content in the same vein as the rest do. What I got tired of on there particularly, was the circlejerking outrage porn that happened at any instance whether it's a game company's decision or whatever. It was just down to the fact that some fanboy is simply unhappy so they've gotta go on a tirade to rile everyone up and go review bomb something.

The whole "if all that you see is X then you must be Y" rhetoric is full of shit

If all that you deal with are assholes then YOU must be the asshole! If everything and everyone is 'abusive behavior' wherever you go then it's because YOU are the abusive one! Like what kind of logic is this? It is both blanket generalizing and accountability dodging in one, whenever this kind of thing is projected. It's to guilt the individual who may be propping legitimate complaints or issues about the people or things they deal with every day, into believing that they're the problem - with some exceptions. I do deal with my fair share of assholes, even when I was trying to be the more civil one and kind to the best of my ability. How, in a reasonable sense, does that constitute me as an asshole when the reception I get is that they're being the asshole in return? What was I expected to do? Drop to my knees, worship their very step and kiss their ass to appease them? The problem lies is when people dodge accountability for their behavior and their actions that result in conflict. So they turn this into some ridiculous ping pong game of deciding who the real asshole is or who the real abuser is. Nothing but high-school level debates that consists of 'he said, she said' that could go on forever and no amount of conclusion is found. So the answer is to just generalize someone and run with it? That makes someone even MORE irresponsible for their accountability, to me. Nobody knows the stories of everyone involved in whatever the hell happens and I've learned that nobody will ever take the time to sit and understand a situation. But I think just generalizing is a stupid way of handling it. If you don't care at all, come to your own conclusions and act upon them even if it means disassociating with someone based on how they've treated you, your friends and even strangers. Don't let social media decide for you about who is an asshole and who is an abuser or who is what.

Wow, nobody was kidding when they say how expensive Apple products are

So, Apple is blowing it's horn now on being a $3 Trillion valued company. Like, yay I suppose... But then I see why and with my own eyes, where I work, their accessories are ridiculously expensive. A simple little phone stand, was $35. But because it was Apple, it's priced that highly. A simple clear and plastic looking case from Apple, is $40. With those prices, you could actually buy a budget phone (if you're okay without the features of an average smartphone). Fully functioning phone vs a stupidly common phone case for Apple phones. That's absurd.

Your safety depends on how curious you are and how far it leads you. You can be considered safe, by being in one solitary place at all times and doing next to nothing. You always risk your safety when you go exploring. There is not a single platform that perfects safety among it's community, with the exception of implementing tools and features that'd at least provide security so that exposure and exploitation is kept at a strict minimum.

The sad reality is, is that, I wouldn't put it past Lemmy for it to contain at least a handful of these bored shitposting edgelords with too much time on their hands. Then again, is it really Lemmy's fault? You're going to come across a band of these people on all walks of the internet, it's just a matter of what volume of them that there is and whether or not it can be regulated and enforced by the community on whether or not they're welcomed.

This was a group that consisted of David Draiman from Disturbed and Geno Lenardo who is a former guitarist from Filter. Only one album was released in the entire discography and the project lasted 2 years. It was a nice breakaway to hear David branch out from Disturbed to see what else he can do and I wished more albums was released. It could've been an industrial supergroup.

Jesus, yes. I can't tell you how many subreddits got swamped with high-school leveled questions about sex.

Especially in TooAfraidToAsk, which is supposed to be about questions that'd normally be about trying to ask taboo things to get a discussion. But no, you'll come across questions like "if there is no porn to look at, what do you look at instead while jerking off in the shower?". Like, besides trolls, who the hell comes up with some questions like that? Let's not forget the abundance of people, showcasing the lack of sexual education, asking if they'd get HPV by doing this or HIV by doing that.

Once I went double monitor, I can't see myself falling back to a single monitor. I've used a single monitor for a good decade and a half before toying with double monitors. I just like being able to have things on one monitor and other things on another. It doesn't necessarily have to be a programmer-specific thing. I now reflect back and hated the idea of having to manage and check so many things while under one monitor. Things would be blinking, but oh wait, I'm gaming, oh wait, I'm browsing too and it's just too much.

I've been online for years and years. Enough to know that, we've been giving our data away before social media took off. Social Media and search engines like Google, have accelerated it and made it a farming thing as the basis of their foundations.

So what I'm referring to about giving our data away before the social media era, is that we have registered on to forums and we have registered to chat rooms and other services. We willingly gave them our names, even beneath the screen names we registered under. We willingly discussed a lot of ourselves within those forums and we can't preemptively assume that they aren't keeping some record of what we're doing and saying. We know all sites keep a stamp of our IP addresses, so it's a safe bet that they're also collecting everything we do within their site's boundaries.

I'm not trying to say that we should all just expose ourselves, en masse. But I will say that you are responsible and you've been responsible for what you decide to put there online. You are right to be questioning and working against things like Google needing your street address to recover a simple password when there had been other proven methods to recover your password by. However, it comes off a little ridiculous when you're griping about privacy while also being someone who dumps their life stories on that platform or this platform.

I was actually about to make a post about this, addressing this issue, but more glad this is already up.

I'm not a fan of any karma system, regardless of platform. People really tie themselves to reactions, likes, upvotes, downvotes .etc to where it cripples them. Nothing they say or do becomes authentic and natural anymore. They say or do things for the specific purpose to get something to validate what they're saying or doing.

And it creates this frustrating system where we end up having to deal with farmers. Reddit is ingrained with it, because we've seen it one too many times. People reposting junk, they get thousands of upvotes and they aren't held accountable for it. We've also seen people perform downvote brigades, hence coining the term 'downvoted to oblivion'. Where, people proactively downvote every post and comment someone has made because of some spite and out of emotion in regards to an opinion that was said.

And they know the effects of these things, because we tie ourselves way too much into it. I'd like to not see scoring or karma systems everywhere. They do nothing but encourage the worst out of anyone to exploit them. They're meaningless, it's just an internet toy that people play with when so many platforms try so hard to describe their importance. But in the end, it's just a stupid internet toy that serves NO purpose.

Work Reform nyternic 1 year ago 90%
I think what needs to reform is the ecosystem of working

Millions of us, everyday of every hour, are working a multitude of hours at different periods in the day. All so that we, can prop and propel the few lives that are on top. The few who's lives we're both knowingly and unknowingly sustaining. Who's lives that have children that we're indirectly supporting through our labor. Who's dreams get to be realized because of our time spent doing these kinds of jobs. What we're left with, is that we're left to having to set aside our dreams or let them die off. We have to tell our children "sorry, honey, but I can't help you get to your prom." or "I can't afford to buy your supplies" or "I can't make it for your game". All at the expense of slaving away for extra hours on top of the scheduled hours to work. This kind of ecosystem is unbearably uncomfortable to realize and practice against our wills. That's what I'd like to see reformed.

People are assuming I just have my passwords littered out on open desktop and in My Documents? Little naive to assume so, when there exists and I have used programs like TrueCrypt to encrypt partitions of private data including those passwords in. Like, good luck getting through that. And, what more, is that master passwords are stored in expansive media and not just strewn about for anyone to just grab and use. They're never on my desktop nor any system I use.

So please, don't just assume I am that careless...

And no I will still not use a password manager.

A lot of good insight on here.

I myself, am getting up there. I am only now just entering Hive Social as a twitter replacement. I'm BEGGING for a Facebook replacement at this point that's not just another Zuck project. I've replaced Reddit with Lemmy so far.

As for anywhere else, I know of them but I can't bring myself to the levels of contribution and commitment as I have with the other social platforms like FB, Reddit, Lemmy, Twitter, Hive .etc

Because it's just too much work, you know? Your mind is continually running like a piston engine for thought as to what to say and everything as part of a community. Social Media risks everyone of running off the treads eventually until they just decentralize themselves from it all and hide in places like Discord where that's all that they can handle, some people, no where.

I've been doing this social media thing since the 2000s, so that's 20+ years of hopping forum to forum, from platform to platform now. We're all forced to just run away, stand the tide of bullshit or just withdraw ourselves.

But yeah, I can't do things like Gaia Online anymore because I'm way too old for that place now. Twitter, is Musk's Playground, regardless of the new CEO in place. FB is just there because my friends on there are stubborn. Reddit, after years of being banned and having to make accounts because of the waves of toxicity, I'm finally tired of it. Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Tiktok .etc I refuse to join and apply myself in.

Reddit was once an enjoyable experience but...

The toxicity became too much to bear. I couldn't go a post or a comment anymore without someone wanting to give me a hard time for it. Downvote brigading, using antagonizing logic to try and bait for responses that they want. The users digging into your post history to bring up things that have nothing to do with, with what you bothered replying to them in the first place. I don't know who to blame, what to blame and when it happened. But, Reddit has long lost it's status as being an open forum to peacefully and civilly talk anything in without someone getting way too entangled with their own self-importance and how their opinions have to be seen as some form of law to be obeyed by.

Anyone who can't answer a simple, innocent and curious question is not worth putting more effort into. That tells me that they prefer to be the one in control of the conversation and later, control of everything.

I do not trust password managers. There's a saying that goes 'do not put all of your eggs in one basket' and that's what I don't do. Mobile, Desktop, whatever, I don't use a single password manager. It wasn't long ago that a password management company was compromised, right? What are the odds that similar circumstances could happen on another password management company? It'd be a disaster.

Whatever happened to just simply having a notepad program/app and documenting your passwords onto there?

Ironic to the contrary, I've caught myself using browsers such as chrome to save my passwords for easier log in. But that's simply out of my decaying memory due to age, not necessarily because I have a bias with Google and I trust them with everything. I still don't trust them with everything.

How close are you to a social media burnout?

Like, we're in an interesting era of times where so many alternatives are cropping up because of the drastic and draconic practices that have been taken on the social media platforms we've commonly embraced. But eventually, starting new can get tiring after a while.

Power-tripping users that somehow have access to hundreds of sub-communities and lean heavily on automodding and just reacting by absolutes because they lack problem solving skills.

Shitty, unfunny jokes that spiral into lengthy comment chains that are a chore to weed through. Keep that shit on Reddit, because everyone pretends they're some downtrodden, unspoken stand up comedian on there.

    Thought policing.

Word policing. Yeah I get that we shouldn't say n***** and stuff. But, why go through the trouble of censoring swears? I mean come on, we've grown up to have the privilege of airing those words out!

People with double standards. It's okay for them to do something, but not okay for me to do that thing, while having general rules that state about what people should abide by yet expecting everyone to follow it equally. It's not equal if you're giving shit to someone just because you feel that they aren't following the rules when they are.
