I haven't used tailscale to know how well it works but as a current zerotier user I've been considering moving away from it.

I actually love the idea and it's super simple to set up but has some very annoying pitfalls for me:

    1. It's a lot of "magic". When it fails to work the zerotier software gives you very little information on why.
    2. The NAT tunneling can be iffy. I had it fail to work in some public WiFis, occasionally failed to work on mobile internet (same phone and network when it otherwise works). Restarting the app, reconnecting and so on can often help but it's not super reliable IMO.
    3. Just recently I've had to uninstall the app restart my Mac, reinstall the app to get it to work again - there were no changes that made it stop, it just decided it's had enough one day to the next and as in point 1, it doesn't tell you much over whether it's connected or not.

Pretty much all of the issues I've had were with devices that have to disconnect and re-connect from the network and/or devices that move between different networks (like laptop, phone). On my router, it's been super stable. Point is, your mileage may vary - it's worth trying but there are definitely issues.

Would you accept a certificate issued by AWS (Amazon)? Or GCP (Google)? Or azure (Microsoft)? Do you visit websites behind cloudflare with CF issued certs? Because all 4 of those certificates are free. There is no identity validation for signing up for any of them really past having access to some payment form (and I don't even think all of them do even that). And you could argue between those 4 companies it's about 80-90% of the traffic on the internet these days.

Paid vs free is not a reliable comparison for trust. If anything, non-automated processes where a random engineer just gets the new cert and then hopefully remembers to delete it has a number of risk factors that doesn't exist with LE (or other ACME supporting providers).

I applaud you for taking a pee sample.

We had a vet once offer one "just to be super safe" and explained that there's a special litter in the bag to make it easy. Then she charged us for it. And then she showed us the bag with basically a handful of litter that'd be barely enough to cover the bottom of the litter bin. It was then we learned to ask more questions upfront.

    We never got the sample.

Yeah nah. I thought your comment was probably the reasonable middle ground until I watched the footage too.

The police has 100% needlessly escalated to violence and fully on a power trip. They have not provided any reason for asking the window to be rolled down - nor did they have any. You can see into the car even though there's a lot of glare on the camera, most likely even better vision for a person. They made no attempt to explain any reasoning for the request to persuade him. Once on the ground and being cuffed, they proceeded to shout at him "when we tell you to do something you do it, not what you want". That's not how it works.

He didn't even try to resist the arrest but they treated him with quite a bit of force. They didn't listen at all when he called out he had an injury and needs more time to comply with the order of sitting down.

Yes, Tyreek did himself no favours with his attitude but he has also done absolutely nothing to deserve this treatment. He wasn't even particularly rude to the cops, his mistake seemed to be not to act fully deferential to a cop on a power trip, which is absolutely no reason to treat anyone like this.

It still has one specific usecase where I find it better - when you need more than 2 beds. We use it when on holiday with my friends because usually getting an Airbnb with 3-4 beds is way cheaper than hotel rooms.

But in pretty much all other cases.. yep, would much rather have a hotel. Last time I had a host who took electric meter readings and charged you for the electricity.. luckily it was negligible since the oven was broken.

I find this very annoying for groceries. My answer would always be no. But they installed this stupid system where your shopping cart wheels will randomly lock up as you're walking out the door and the security person has to come unlock them, and it's a pain if you don't have a receipt.

So now I always press yes just in case I lose cart roulette..

I'd guess it's corporate circlejerk - they probably made deals with hardware manufacturers who are annoyed people are not replacing their perfectly functional systems with new ones. Windows gets pre-installed on new systems, and in exchange windows requires new things forcing people to upgrade their old systems - or be locked out of the most popular OS in the world.

Boeing engineers are advocating for flying Starliner as is, that enough is known about the problem that failures will not occur during the vehicle's return to Earth.

Yea honestly those engineers should go and fly on Starliner themselves first. They could even replicate the issue on the ground, and yet it's still unknown what's causing it but they feel comfortable to just say "nah it's fine"?

I wonder how the astronauts feel about getting back on it to return..

Not OP but some stores have these hyper-sensitive scales you put your bag/scanned items on. They can be super annoying as tiny differences in the weight will lock up the entire thing and you need someone to unlock it again. E.g. if you didn't start with all your bags already on it and you try to add a new bag. Or the area is full and you want to remove and already full bag. Or you nudged something with your leg while scanning the next item.

The best thing is grocery stores where they have handheld scanners you can take with you in the store, you scan the item as you put it into your bag and on the way out you just scan the code on the self-service checkout and pay. Least effort possible, plus the scanner doesn't have the "oh a speck of dust landed on the scales.. obviously this means he's trying to steal shit" issue.

Just a warning: the photo part of proton drive is incredibly basic to be generous and even that doesn't seem to work smoothly (on android). Just to handpick 2 very annoying things aside from lack of features: opening a picture that's locally on your phone takes 1-2 seconds, and when you back out it has to refresh the gallery view every time, which also takes 1-2 seconds - incredibly annoying while looking for the correct picture.

I use it as a second type of backup for my photos, but I definitely couldn't live with the UX the app provides. IMO the drive part in general is very lacking.

I'm still happy with my proton subscription for mail and VPN, but I'd suggest you trial the drive part before committing to it (unless you already know it's ok for your needs, in which case great!).

This triggered a memory. When I went to university one of my flatmates bought a fancy frisbee that you could throw super far, so as a form of exercise we used to walk to a large park nearby to play.

Come spring when the weather started getting better, the park started getting busier. On one occasion it was full of kids (like 5-6 year olds?) and parents who ignored them. We tried to stay away but the kids kept getting lured by the frisbee that flies far. At some point one of my flatmates tried to hide the frisbee under his shirt to get them to leave, but one of the kids saw him do it and ran to him trying to grab it from under his shirt and yeah.. as soon as my flatmate realised the kid was going to try grabbing at him at the bottom of his shirt he immediately threw the frisbee on the ground and held up his hands as if he was at gunpoint and walked away.

It was pretty funny from the outside but damn.. do I hate parents who let their kids harass other people. It was a much better experience when a bad dog owner was there at a different occasion and we had a dog chasing us around for 20 mins..

It used to be an open source project, then at some point the developers moved it to closed source. In reaction to this, a couple of people forked the last open source version of emby and launched it as an open source project (again) named jellyfin.

It is still open source and under active development, and has a significant userbase. Especially on Lemmy I think it's much preferred by people to emby (or at least more vocally supported).

I have no experience with this, but happened to have seen an interview with Ludwig Minelli, the founder of Dignitas (an organisation for assisted death). The man is 90+ and still fighting for this right. I believe I saw it in a video format, but I think this was the interview - I think it's worth a read.

I'd suggest you look up the contact for the various organisations and reach out with your situation and questions to see what they say. They're likely to be much better sources of information.

Maybe set up a script that runs locally and pings an external service like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 every second to see if it survives in a window when your services alert? Perhaps it's your modem refreshing some config which causes a blip for a few seconds or something similar. If this doesn't alert at least you can rule out that your internet fully goes out.

The other side of this would also be useful, if you could run a similar check towards different levels of your home network to see how far down it gets (e.g. ping your router, expose some simple TCP echo service on the server running all this and nc it, curl the status page of the reverse proxy (or set up a static page in it), curl the app behind the reverse proxy - just make sure to use firewall rules for this and not just put everything on the internet). Depending on where it fails should hopefully give you some idea to go on.

Maybe set up https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/ to see if it registers any packet loss in those times or increased latency (although I'd still do the above as well)

It doesn't eliminate the smell, but air purifiers can reduce it significantly. We have a decent one in the room where the litters are that turns on on a schedule. It's a bit annoying that if the cats use the litter just when it's turning off then it's kinda no use.

My long term plan if I ever get around to it is to build a cupboard type thing to put their litter in with an extractor fan to the outside.

Litter robots could help, but all the people I know who have them said they just replace some issues and chores with other issues and chores in the end.

Scary read, honestly. I'm shocked she's only got 8 years so far considering she started grooming a 14 year old for essentially slavery. The summary of their interview with her in the end absolutely paints an unhinged psychopath - as if her actions weren't enough already.

I can't imagine the state of mind her victims had to be in to hand over 10s of thousands of dollars a month and somehow still not consider that they have the means to escape.

Kudos to the lady who managed to get away early and pursued the issue so the others could be rescued in the end, but ffs if only the law enforcement believed her earlier so much suffering could have been avoided...

It's such a contrast from Europe. I had the cops called on me once in the UK (and they also don't have a great reputation) as I drank too much and somehow got stuck in someone's garden knocking on their window at like 3am to let me out.

Cops came, ID'd me, asked what I was doing there and helped me climb out/half pulled me out then gave me a ride home. I remember them just having a laugh at me being stupid due to being drunk. I asked them if they could cuff me cuz I wanted to know what it's like and they said no because they didn't want me to hurt myself by falling over or something. I also asked if we could go through the McDonald's drive through when we went by one on the way and offered to bribe them with a happy meal but they just chuckled and told me they can't do that unfortunately. One of them walked me up to my flat and made sure I got in safe before leaving. Granted I wasn't arrested or anything, but it felt like a positive experience and I woke up feeling thankful for them having been there the night before.

To contrast, I've once been pulled over in the US with friends and even though the cop didn't do or say anything wrong, I distinctly remember feeling like his tone and demeanor was challenging (as if he wanted us to argue with him or something). We were let go without a ticket or anything in the end, all he said when we asked why we were pulled over is that it's a routine check. It felt like a very negative experience and from what it sounds like, it's as good as it could have gone in the US.

While I understand the content on medium is different per author, I associate it with poor quality content. It may pop up in search results, but I actively avoid the results because of the association. Point being, the exposure you get may not be the type you want.

Also don't forget your content will be subject to the user experience medium decides to provide. I think it's already subpar with it being full of popups and prompts to register and pay for an account, but consider how companies constantly enshittfy. You are giving away the control of how you are represented.

I don't know if there are agencies focussing on this, but in general it probably comes down to the company more than the agency. Probably worth filtering for companies offering flexible hours in the description

I would say at the moment the IT job market is incredibly competitive for candidates, so it might be even more difficult to find truly flex roles when they can so easily find 100s of people who just work regular hours.

On your last question: I've been a hiring manager in 2 companies (although in the UK) for software engineers and adjacent roles (like devops, platform, QA) and I would not care whether someone needs equipment. In the big scheme of things spending $800 for a monitor, keyboard and mouse is not even a drop in the bucket for the cost of an employee. What I would want to know is how do you work in a team in your situation and what arrangement can we do where you have a good experience, but other people in the company can still count on you. E.g. if you are working on a project and an issue pops up that's blocking others from progressing and we need you to discuss, but you're having a bad day and not working, what are the options you can offer? Or what if you get blocked when everyone else is asleep so you can't progress?

I think being prepared and upfront about this in an early stage of interviewing would be ideal, it signals that you have thought about others around you and also weed out any companies who aren't willing to make this arrangement work. That being said, as above it's a very competitive market right now so chances are pretty slim (at least in the UK).

Also keep in mind once you look at companies who hire from abroad, you're now also competing with (comparably) cheap labour from developing countries, who will likely agree to much worse terms.

Edit: one thing I forgot, you may have the option to be your own boss (depending on your skill level) and freelance on a project basis rather than on a per-day basis.

Debrid vs usenet and the *arrs?

I currently have a very comfortable lil home server with the arrs and plex (would like jellyfin but it's not there yet for me, currently fielding emby given how Plex is going), basically all sources are usenet. I'm nearing a point where I either have to delete some stuff or expand space, which is not cheap, and some of my older drives are likely due for some failures too. So after seeing the popularity of debrid I've been wondering if it'd be worth to instead spend the money on it, but would like to ask some questions. I spend maybe around $70/year on the various bits for Usenet and I expect I'd have to spend around an average of $80/year on drives for just expanding storage (obviously assuming I don't just delete stuff). And that's with avoiding 4k just for storage reasons (my internet could take the streaming tho) Even just the price of Usenet seems to be more than the price of a debrid subscription though and from what I understand I'd not need new disks with it either. From what I understand debrid is a shared download space for Torrents/direct downloads where if someone adds something it's available for everyone (presumably it gets deleted if noone accessed it for some time and would have to be re-downloaded?). It's possible to mount the content via WebDAV to make it accessible to clients/media servers to stream directly from debrid. My questions are.. 1. Is there still a point to sonarr/radarr with debrid? 2. How is the quality? (both in terms of media quality and in terms of file organisation so things are discoverable and accurate, e.g. chances of things explicitly named wrong so you think you're about to watch Brooklyn 99 and instead get porn) 3. I would likely go the path of using zurg and keeping with Plex/emby - any experience with how well does this work (any recommendations for or against)? What's the mechanism for picking what is available in the mounts to the media server.. or is it just.. everything on debrid? 4. I don't really use any torrents at the moment, from what I understand that's primarily how you get things on debrid. Would I have to start looking for good trackers to get content or is there no need because chances are someone will have downloaded/shared most things? 5. I guess, am I assuming this works very differently to how it actually does? Any experience from people who did the swap from Usenet/arrs to some debrid + media server? Many questions in a wall of text, I'd be grateful for any answers to any of them! Thanks!
