I'm super excited for the discussion of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, and I've been wanting to read Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary Wolf for awhile!
What is the highest number of books you've read in a year? What is your average? What do you do to fit in more books?

Is this the combined bill for mastodonworld and lemmyworld?
What have you checked out recently?
Is there a book you've read you wish you could go back and give to your younger self and say, "read this!" or a book you read and you're mad you've gone through however long being oblivious to how good it is?
markovianparallax 1 year ago • 100%
omg yes. When I'm making something and I suddenly have to pee the fear sets in that if I go pee I'll wander off and forget I was ever making something. I swear I'll start cooking, get distracted by needing to pee, while peeing remember something I need to do on my computer, while on my computer get distracted by my cat wanting food and end up back in the kitchen because I went to go grab my cat a snack and I'm like OH RIGHT.
I don't know how I ever get anything done.

Out of all the books you've read in 2023, which are your favorites so far?

When was the last time you went to the a library? I don't check out a lot of physical books myself, so I only go at most once a month to get those few books I can't find on hoopla or libby.
markovianparallax 1 year ago • 100%
Yeah, it took me awhile to train my brain to focus on them. I have to do something that requires almost no thought to basically keep my hands busy without distracting me from focusing on the book.

If you have a library card you can probably use hoopla and/or libby.

I'm 1000% pro-audiobooks. I listen to them when I wash dishes, drive, or play certain video games.
markovianparallax 1 year ago • 100%
I think that's an excellent tip. That's how I got back into reading. Instead of trying to set aside an hour or two for reading I just started carrying a book around so I could read 10 pages here or there when I would have otherwise been looking at my phone or staring into space. It's a really easy way to read more without taking time away from other things. I get reading in when I'm standing in line or in a waiting room or waiting to meet up with a friend.
What is your library like? Does it have a good selection? What are the hours like? What kind of services does it offer? Has it gotten better or worse over time? I'm curious to hear from people in different places.
markovianparallax 1 year ago • 100%
My number one tip is don't be afraid to DNF. (DNF stands for Did Not Finish.) I used to be someone who wanted to finish every book I started and I always held out hope a book would get better, but I read so much more if I just give up on books I'm not enjoying. Now that I DNF things more quickly it keeps me from getting into reading slumps.
What have you found helps you read more?

My favorite books are probably Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition: The Remarkable Journal of Shackleton's Polar-Bound Cat by Caroline Alexander, The Plutonium Files: America's Secret Medical Experiments in the Cold War by Eileen Welsome, Stoner by John Williams, and Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.
Edit: Oh yeah, and Hitchhiker's Guide, of course.

One of the other mods deleted the post. Womp-womp. Do you remember what it said?
What is your most reread book? What about it keeps you coming back?
Is there a book cover that sticks out in your mind as being particularly excellent?
By this, I mean either an author you love despite their shortcomings (ie "guilty pleasure"), or an author who you know is a terrible person which causes you to not be able to look away in fascination (ie "hate-read"), or an author who you know is terrible but despite this you're like, damn, their writing is still excellent (ie "your fav is problematic.") What makes them terrible, and what makes you like them anyway?

Initially shown off at 1961's Detroit Motor Show, it had two in-line wheels like a motorcycle, and two side-by-side seats inside the cab. A system of gyroscopes was supposed to keep the vehicle stable, but in practice, it needed outriggers to keep upright on the road. It was never put into production. 100% agree. There's nothing they could do at this point. I'm done.
I'm just wondering if I'm struggling to figure something out as a mod or a regular user where's the best place to ask?

Sometimes when I go on vacation I'll check out the local library just to see what other cities have going on. What's the most interesting public library you've ever seen?

Yes! This is what I do too. I used to start with 12 because one a month seems very respectable. Then I would just up it throughout the year as I met my goal. I like the idea of not having a super firm goal so that if I get really busy or I decide to read something really long I wont get stressed about missing the mark.

This is one of those books that's on my "I don't know if I want to read this or not" TBR. Is it hard to follow? I always hate when I get 100 pages into a book and realize I am thoroughly confused.

I have a question about how to interact with posts. So I'm on lemmy.world, and right now I'm seeing this post via lemmy.world, but what do I do when someone posts a link and it takes me to kbin and I want to comment?
