I have a bunch of habits I don't like with how I respond to things said to me verbally.

For the longest time I thought I had bad hearing, always asking people to repeat things. At some point in the past few years I actuality started introspecting and realized that most of the time I have answers prepared by the time they're done repeating themselves. My hearing is fine, but I have abnormally poor language processing.

Often I react to things by intentionally misinterpreting in an innocuous way, things like that. I never really liked it but pretended it wasn't a thing. It's a subconsciously developed strategy for buying time. Also why I handle talking one-on-one much better than groups, once two people start talking to each other I get too far behind the conversation and keep thinking of the things I would have liked to have chimed in with thirty seconds ago.

Meaning the content in the headline here was buried in a different article that was allowed, but the one that got through had a focus on a closely-related topic that could earn a more Israel-friendly headline. Since most people read the headlines and not the articles, this shapes the narrative with wiggle room for saying the takedown is justified.

If there was another article allowed that was actually focused on the demands for an independent investigation, then yeah OP is bullshitting. Not going to say whether that's the case because I don't care enough to justify opening reddit to find out.

This essay resonates with me, thanks for sharing, the author makes her points pretty effectively. I'm not a historian and I don't know shit, but I think even if I give the critics the concession that everything is absolute rubbish, I still think there's no convincing argument that the beliefs are dishonest or malicious or not genuine.

There's so much bullshit and conflicting views about literally every historical event that I find it really hard to penetrate the context of the discussion and feel confident in anything, but I think the fact that I keep seeing people who hold "tankie" opinions dismissed as malicious propagandists pushes me very strongly towards feeling that the critics have not made any attempt to seriously engage with the ideas they're fighting against.

I think the realization I'm coming to now is that when part of your ideology is that people who claim belief in a specific conflicting worldview can be dismissed as bots or propagandists, finding out that those people aren't manufactured makes it a lot harder to take everything else you've said seriously.

On the other hand, the guy you're replying to is correct that the author's points fall completely flat and are ridiculous once you hunt down that specific paragraph and remove the context immediately before and after. Then it becomes obvious to an unbiased reader that the author actually ignored communist death tolls because it was inconvenient for her argument.

While there's a little bit of getting acclimated to slightly different programs for the same tasks, I kind of imagine sophisticated needs primarily comes down to hardware. A company making some sort of computer hardware doohickey might design and test and provide support for something with Windows/Mac in mind, and maybe for other operating systems they're not cooperative with documenting support, under the mindset that it would reveal trade secrets or decrease shareholder value in some other way. Linux support then comes from other means like reverse engineering. This could mean that it will take time before all the kinks are ironed out, or if the product was short-lived the linux community might not care enough to have someone volunteer to keep up with support. Common, time-tested hardware will have good support. Plugging in some old printer that was discontinued shortly after launch will be more of a crapshoot.

I'm aware that at some point sourceforge went down the toilet, but in the early 2000s it seemed to be a pretty reliable website for open source software. I had gone a few years coming across more and more evidence that any software I was downloading from sourceforge was much less likely to be a load of shit than software downloaded anywhere else. At some point I made the connection that maybe open source software is better in general. That made me curious about the experience of using an entire operating system that was open source. Either 2012 or late 2011 I installed Fedora to dual boot with windows (like 70% sure it was win7, might have been vista). Over the next year or two I sampled a bunch of other distros, and also PCBSD (not sure if that still exists) at one point. In retrospect I was really sampling DEs, but I didn't know the distinction.

Discovering the philosophy behind GNU was what led me to abandoning windows entirely. I think I had already had some of the core ideas of free software, albeit in extremely rudimentary forms (gee, these EULAs sure do seem like they're deliberately obfuscated), floating around my head for a while. The concept of free software resonated with me, so that's when I finally removed my windows partition. I stopped distro-hopping and settled on Trisquel for two or three years.

Afterwards, I decided to move to Parabola because I thought it would force me to learn things, but the main thing I learned was how to read documentation just well enough to get everything working by trial-and-error tinkering.

I've kind of moved on from free software at this point. I do still agree with the ideals, but I think the goals are somewhat inconsistent with a capitalist economy to begin with so I'd rather be concerned about that.

Today I use arch and still have no idea what the hell I'm doing, but I've had a stable system for years and I'm too comfortable with it to switch to a friendlier distribution.

If you take away all his goals, he’d be the highest scoring player of all time on assists alone.

This is true, but every other time you've used the word "goals" in this post it should be "points", points = goals + assists. Every goal has at most two assists, but typically the ratio is around ~1.5 assists for every goal. As you say, Gretzky has the record for goals and then also has more assists than any other player has points, which is ludicrously dominant.

One of the most wild things to me is how boring Gretzky highlights are. If you look at highlight footage of the other generational hockey players - Lemieux, Ovechkin, Crosby, McDavid - these guys are insane athletes who are capable of outmuscling and embarrassing the opposition. Gretzky was not a freak athlete, he just had intuition for where to be on a better level than anyone else ever has. I remember reading that when he was eight he got an exception to play in a league for ten-year-olds and completely tore it up, like five points per game, in spite of being the tiniest kid on the ice every night.

It's not even well documented what he was doing because the NHL typically had only one camera per game in the eighties, the one following the puck, and his dominance came from where he was going when he didn't have the puck.

If you watch hockey, every so often there will be a game where a guy doesn't particularly stand out, but then you look on the scoresheet at the end and realize he got four points. You think I guess that he had a good game tonight. I imagine watching Gretzky was this exact feeling, except then you realize you're fifty games into the season and this is like the thirtieth time this has happened.

Ovechkin is actually in striking distance of breaking the goals record, but 50 goals (42? I don't remember where he ended the season.) is a large number for anyone to hit past 38. It's pretty rare for a player to be good enough to still have a roster spot by that point, let alone score 50 in the remainder of their career. Has anyone besides Howe (in the 1970s) scored over 40 goals after 38?

In any case, I'm hoping he can break it. Ten years ago literally no one thought a major Gretzky record could be even remotely in jeopardy. It was not something anyone would give serious consideration.

Screenplay for ninety-second trailer of a Christmas-themed horror movie

Hey all, this is my original work which I am very proud of. I worked very hard on this and would appreciate receiving praise and constructive criticism. screenplay: _____________ Open with a scene of a man alone chopping wood on a snowy day. He is large-bodied and looks visually menacing, it should be clear that he is the villian. He sings an eerie and discomforting tune: "Da Da Da Da Da Da Da" The next sixty or whatever seconds build up a horror movie featuring the aforementioned villain and a hero named John, a boy around 17 years old, as well as a couple friends around the same age who support him. A couple times cut back to the opening woodchopping "Da Da Da Da Da Da Da" scene. Nearing the end of the trailer, scene with John and his couple friends walking through the city on a snowy day. The townsfolk jeer and yell obscenities at them. John narrates: "Before the incident, we were treated just like anyone else. But now, whenever we go out, the people always shout." (words flash on the screen, large font) **JOHN** Very brief scene of a terrified scream **JACOB** *chop* "Da Da Da Da Da Da Da" **JINGLEHEIMER** Frantic sprinting through a snow-covered forest **SCHMIDT** Scene of John in an attic, which is illuminated only by the candle he holds in one hand. With the other hand, John lifts up and examines a dusty old photo of the villain. "Oh my God. His name is my name too." Candle blows out. (smaller font) PREMIERES CHRISTMAS EVE

Looking for an instant messaging friend! (XMPP or other)

Hi all, I haven't instant messaged with strangers in a good bit and I kind of want to relive those days, so giving this another shot. I made a post here a couple years back and made connections with a couple cool people, but eventually those faded. Trying again now that lemmy is more popular, not sure if this time it will just get swallowed up in the massive sea of posts that are here now. I'd like to use a messenger that is supported by a FOSS linux client. I still have an XMPP (decentralized messenger) account, so that would be my first choice, but I'd be fine to sign up for matrix, or anything else that I can run easily from a desktop client on linux. To be clear, you don't have to be a linux user yourself, I'm pretty sure pidgin works great for XMPP on windows. To help you decide whether you should talk to me, I made these lists: **Reasons you should talk to me:** * You had a good day and want to share that with someone. * You had a bad day and want to share that with someone. * You want to talk about depression and emotional health with another human being. * You want to shoot the shit about listening to music and don't mind when those discussions stray far from the mainstream. (My favorite stuff is neoclassical, metal, and industrial.) * You have some tiny amount of comfort with your arch linux setup and want a chance to show off to an arch user who knows even less than you do. * You have pokemon violet version, but need a pokemon from scarlet version to complete your pokedex. (I've also played a ton of Yo-Kai 3. Monster taming games in general are my niche.) * You're confused as to why every right adjoint preserves all monic arrows, but don't want to sign up for the mathematics stackexchange. * You have an interest in computer programming, and are happy to discuss that stuff with a novice. (I need to pick haskell back up, I think I was approaching being good enough to write Hello World.) * You follow the NHL and want to emphasize that I should feel bad for rooting for a team currently employing Tom Wilson. * You somehow obtained an XMPP messenger account but no one else seems to use it. * You think maybe messaging me would help you justify all the time you just wasted on reading this stupid list. **Reasons you should not talk to me:** * You do not feel you would be satisfied with a platonic-only friendship. (I am happily married.) * You are not an adult. (I don't doubt that there are tons of cool teenagers out there, but I would feel like a creep.) * You have high standards. * You would be upset with the fact that I can be flaky and with me sleeping totally ridiculous hours. (Case in point: It's almost 2AM where I live. Going to bed soon.) * Mi Espanol no es bueno, no hablo Espanol. (Want to learn but haven't made progress.) * You went through my post history and found that I said something horribly offensive three years ago. * Honestly, I'm awkward as shit. Looking for feedback on my sixty-second trailer for a horror movie titled "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt"

I'm looking for feedback on my original screenplay. It is a sixty-second-ish long trailer for a Christmas-themed horror movie. This is an update on [my screenplay idea I posted on lemmy a couple years back](https://lemmy.ml/post/70963). (lemmy.ml link because I still haven't learned how to link to posts cross-instance, doesn't seem to be in the docs.) --- Open with a scene of a man alone chopping wood on a snowy day. He is large-bodied and looks visually menacing, it should be clear that he is the villian. He sings an eerie and discomforting tune: "Da Da Da Da Da Da Da" The next thirty or whatever seconds build up a horror movie featuring the aforementioned villain and a hero named John, a boy around 17 years old, as well as a couple friends around the same age who support him.

    I came up with a sci-fi thought experiment/writing prompt - thoughts?

I came up with a science fiction writing prompt/thought experiment that I'd like to share. I'm aware this is a little silly. Background: There exists an aether throughout the universe which I am going to suggestively name "soul". Soul can congeal, and congealed soul can take on a multitude of different states. Consciousness is congealed soul, and the states it takes on are emotions. Organisms have evolved to interact with soul, and over time the emotions they are able to evoke have become less rudimentary and increasingly varied. The prompt/thought experiment: A utilitarian mad scientist designs blueprints for a soul virus, which causes the aether permeating everything to congeal and then permanently crystallize in a joyful state. It will spread and eventually unify all consciousness into one. This leads to the question of whether universal bliss is worth the price of a total loss of individuality.

I just woke up from a silly dream and feel the need to share

Anyone remember how Trump started Space Force? I was on Space Force, and I got sent to the moon. We were called Moon Force, and there was only one other soldier there on the moon with me. Back home on Earth, I wanted to mail her a card, so I looked in the card aisle for cards related to Moon Force. They only had one relevant card, it said "Don't Moon Force me to go". I thought it was funny so I got it for her and mailed it.

Helping a cat work through past trauma?

I'm just going to type out the full story rather than being vague. We have a girl named Oceanborn, a black cat who never grew up - she has looked like an eight-month-old kitten for years. When we got Oceanborn, she was five or six months old. She was a little shy but we could play with her and pick her up okay. Shortly after getting her, she got a very nasty eye infection that required a course of antibiotic drops. It became clear pretty quickly that she *really* did not like the drops, and giving them to her became a task for two people. We felt that it would be a bad idea to stop the antibiotics early, so we finished the course. It was clearly traumatic for her, and I still feel awful about it today. She became terrified of us. At that point I felt it would be best to give her space. I was really hoping that time would heal that wound, but it's been about four years now and there's only been tiny bits of progress. She will let us pet her, but on her own terms - if I approach her she will likely run. I haven't had much luck with using foods to get her to warm up to me. She is okay being out and about when we are home, but if there is a visitor she will hide for hours. She lives with another cat friend who is very social and full of energy, but she only interacts with him occasionally. I'm honestly not even sure if I should be trying to get her to open up or not, but it really eats at me so I'm reaching out for suggestions. I want her to be the cat she could have been without the trauma, but maybe that's being selfish and she is who she is? I think I need an outside perspective because it's too emotional for me.

My first paper as a recreational mathematician https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.03105

I was burned out on math for a very long while after failing out of my phd, just now starting to get back into it. This paper is not something a professional mathematician would take seriously, but I'm really happy with it still and wanted to share.

33/M/US - Looking to chat over XMPP

What I'm looking for: I'm offering to be a friend to chat with occasionally over XMPP messenger. Platonic only because I am happily married, and I'd rather not chat with anyone under 18 just because I would feel like a creep. My interests: I love listening to music, but more often weirder music like neoclassical, industrial, and various subgenres of extreme metal. In general I try to support libre software, but I'm not perfect with it and definitely make exceptions for games. I especially like pokemon and other monster-collecting games. I want to learn to program but haven't gotten any deeper than what's necessary to do the first fifty or so project euler programs in haskell. I was abd in mathematics, and my qualifiers were in category theory and algebraic topology. I got burnt out for a while but I'm starting to enjoy math again now that I'm not under pressure to perform. I follow the NHL. Since the playoffs in 1998 I was watching Capitals games every once in a while, but about ten years ago I started watching them religiously and still am. Politically I identify as pretty far left, but I don't have good knowledge of theory. About me: Honestly, I can be very flaky and I know I might not be the ideal friend. Things have been hard lately. I am unemployed and have been very sick with post-covid symptoms since my recovery end of March. Still, if anyone wants to talk I would be happy to.

    Is diasp.nl permanently dead?

My pod has been giving me a "502 Bad Gateway" error for a few days now. Does anyone know a way to find out if they're gone for good? My account on the pod was like three years old with a ton of posts, so I don't want to make a new one if I don't have to. EDIT: Just came back online as of October 29.
