This is why electric cars need to be “second car” cheap. I have a super-mega-hauler-SUV because about 4 times a month, I REALLY need one. Every other trip is done in my ancient tiny Honda. Every 10k miles on my Honda at 35mpg it saves me about $1500 in running costs over the SUV. If I could buy an $8k electric runabout it’d be even faster payoff.

I really want an OPEC (one person electric car)
Backup cameras are required by law for safety reasons. Same with ABS, seatbelts, airbags etc, but a LOT of things can be ripped out.
Heat/AC are really required as well in most places.
I’d be happy if an Android or iPhone was a REQUIREMENT. It’d run the car as an app, be a nav system, entertainment and everything, plus keep the cost down even further.
Crank window (note only one!) on the ONE door with an emergency push out window on the other side. Speakers? No. A mono, Bluetooth connected one in the headrest is plenty.
It would need to be able to cruise at 70mph, but all the other little changes would mean huge weight savings and a single person “bubble shape” would be real aerodynamic. A standard 120v plug would be all that would be even offered. Keeps coat and weight down.

There is a pizza place near me that we used to order from fairly often. I was driving past and thought that I’d just stop in and grab one in person once. I would have had to yell to the cashier to order as Fox Entertainment (clearly not news) was blaring SO loudly. Noped right out and won’t go back. Have a few friends who stopped as well.

I worked at a cable company in my youth. This was the obvious response. Everyone seemed to think that if they could just have a-la-carte cable that they’d be happy (and thought that they’d pay less). What most wouldn’t believe is that a LOT of those channels you didn’t care about were either free to the provider, or in the case of things like QVC were actually subsidizing more expensive channels (ESPN being the biggest one).

I was a proud third party voter for a long time but changed my mind after watching CGPGrey’s video about first past the post. It’s not really ABOUT trying to change minds but FPTP voting rules really do mean that a two party system is bound to very basic human psychology.

No. Not even close to OK. There are examples of light in the darkness, such as Tim Walz (Kamala Harris' running mate) who as the governor of Minnesota enacted a law to make school lunches free for all. Kids don't get to decide who they are born to, and hungry kids don't learn nearly as well as fed kids. Educated kids help our future, so it's an extremely high ROI.

Remember - it's the Electoral College that actually counts here. This isn't great news for Harris as the 'crazy' faction is big with RFK and they're more likely to break for Trump.

The closest thing to bipartisanship that the Heritage foundation has ever done was when one of their janitors used some blue colored soap in the restroom. It was quickly changed out for some RED soap as soon as someone noticed.

"Putting in laws" requires that Congress (Republicans aren't about to get on board here) get things passed. Things like 'expanding the court' are what really would drive Republican voters to the polls, which is why they haven't done that. The President has less power than you seem to be giving them credit for. Do you think that Biden should just go slap a pair of cuffs on Trump? Trump would win in a landslide if that happened. The Democrats have certainly been asleep at the wheel for a while, and it's going to take a long time to get P25 out of the government for sure. There are no quick fixes.

I’m currently in the “blue no matter who” camp. Harris has momentum, but Trump still has an edge in the electoral college and that’s what actually matters.
Controversially, I’ll say that: there are no undecided voters. The person that will win is the one who can actually get their supporters to the polls. Last time around Trump got 74 million people to vote for him and as much as Lemmy/Reddit whatever site you visit seems to think that Harris is winning, it’s all about voter turnout.

“Put up safeguards” isn’t really actionable. What is required is that people VOTE. Democrats have been losing these elections and it’s pretty hard to enact laws when they’re out of power.

They took spinach off of their offerings when there was a listeria (or some such) scare with one of their suppliers. After a few months of going there I asked a 'manager' if they would ever get it back and they kind of just shrugged. I walked out a couple times after that and went down the strip-mall to another place a few times, hopefully to prove a point (moved offices so I've not really been back to Subway in years now).

I went with the BezosBoxHomeAsssssistant. … it sucks too. The challenge to my mind is that it’s hard to make any profit on these things, so it’s hard to spend the dev and server $$$ required to actually make the systems do what they should.

I had two Pebble Steel watches. One just up and died one day and the other slowly failed as the buttons stopped working. I knew it was fixable, but with the sale to Fitbit happening, I Switched to AppleWatch. I do miss some things (battery life!) but all in all I’m not unhappy with my Apple Watch.

Just another voice in the crowd to say "Same". Herein lies one of the major differences I see with "R" vs "D". One side sees learning and admitting mistakes as the ultimate sin, whereas the other generally embraces learning and changing a viewpoint as new information comes to light.

"Make Politics Boring Again" Republicans have by-and-large politicized a HUGE number of things that should simply be left up to the scientific community. We shouldn't NEED to have hearings on whether the planet is warming. The debate should be on minutia that aims to bring equity to all humanity, and frankly that's pretty boring.
Here's your twice-annual warning! Texas' power grid can't handle cold OR hot! Has anyone tried cutting taxes and banning people from bathrooms? That'll probably make this better.
Because riding my bike 11 miles to work in 95 degree heat with unhealthy air to breathe is totally an option! I'd rather take my mega-bro-dozer pickup, in case I need to buy 1000lbs of mulch... /Sarc

My wife and I have a toddler and a newborn. I figure a thread on play-places, parks and kid-friendly events is a good idea :) Even though malls are dying, we take the kids to play at ~Willow Bend - Half dead mall. Playplace is nice, but ratio of climb-ables to space means this one is better suited to running around than play. ~ Lewisville (music city). 80% dead mall. A couple small slides for the littles, and a big climbing gym for the bigger kids. Usually quite a bit quieter than any other mall, and you can generally let the littles run wild in the mall halls as it's so dead. ~ Stonebriar - fairly thriving mall. Playplace is PACKED with climbable stuff (almost too packed) and fairly small, especially for how busy it gets at times. ~ Prestonwood Church - Play place is free and not at a mall! Really better for kids out of the toddler stage.
