I think it can be useful in predicting a diagnosis months/years before a doctor would be able to, since it can analyze data and look for patterns across millions of cases. This would be especially useful in rare diseases, or even something like dementia.

But using it to tell a nurse or doctor that their patient's white blood counts are "really, really high" after being bitten by an animal is borderline insulting to healthcare professionals.

but a tool that takes away the toil of monitoring

Ok, so Lifelabs posts patient lab results online for them to see. They CLEARLY mark "high" and "low" for items that are out of range (of the norm).

A nurse would quite literally crosscheck 50 blood markers in a matter of seconds, without the need for expensive AI or at a risk of them losing their job/qualifications.

In this specific case, the fever + high WBC would be more than enough for a nurse to know that something was up. It makes me think that adding AI just adds another step.

I'm not saying that the application of AI to detect abnormalities is wasteful, but I do think it's unnecessary and possibly a negative in the context of basic lab work.

That warning showed the patient’s white blood cell count was “really, really high,” recalled Bell, the clinical nurse educator for the hospital’s general medicine program.

I'm not a doctor, but even an idiot would know when a WBC is "really, really high" and assume infection. I mean, shit, "suffering from a cat bite and a fever, but otherwise appeared fine "... um, a cat bite AND A FEVER... red flag!

“It’s not replacing the nurse at the bedside; it’s actually enhancing your nursing care.”

I would argue that this would make nurses less important, and would make them "lazy" by not giving them opportunities to identify these simple things on a regular basis.

Would a nurse who doesn't know what a very high WBC entails be paid less? I would think so.

I can see AI/machine learning used in very complex cases where a human HCP would simply not have the number-crunching capability to find a diagnosis, but this was not that case.

I appreciate the math! But yes, for a crime this significant, and one that affects 1 billion (!!!) people, the equivalent of $467 to the average American is peanuts.

But I'd also argue that a $467 fine to the average American hurts more than the equivalent to a company that amasses so much wealth. There are so many hundreds of billions of dollars in excess profit being funnelled into Meta. For a fine to sting, it would need to be at least $100 billion or more, but even that could be made up very quickly...

We're just talking wishful thinking at this point. None of these mega corporations were ever "hurt" by a fine, so they factor it into their business costs when they plan to commit these crimes.

but what alternatives? I’d like to check them out.

There are a ton, but you can get more specific depending on your needs.

I ride with a Varia radar, which has a light built in. That can be mounted on a seat post, under the saddle, on the back of a bag/trailer, and it spreads light REALLY well.

On the front, I'd say it depends a lot on your use. Someone who is touring will want/need something different vs someone who's commuting.

I like Olight headlights (also Magicshine, which have the same models). They use a garmin mount, so really easy to place them anywhere.

I recently got a Lumintop B01, which is a "flashlight style", but very specific beam pattern for cyclists. It uses removable batteries, lasts hours and hours, and can also be mounted just about anywhere.

I also love the Nitecore BR25 (discontinued), which is also a flashlight style but has a really nice, beam cutoff and shines onto the bike/ground for max visibility.

But all my options need to have very long run times. Someone who only needs a light for an hour can get away with something much smaller. I have several other lights that can be used quickly with no special mounts. And a clip on rear light for my trailer(s), which is also highly visible and can turn brighter when I'm slowing down or stopping (like a car's rear lights).

Just to give you an example of an Olight RN1500 headlight (at low brightness) and the Varia RT515 (default mode). Both lights can easily be seen from the side, in addition to any reflective elements on my bike/bags/clothing/helmet:

A driver would need to be blind to "not see" me.

I bet you could fit a cup holder and pouch behind the curves.

I can't imagine reaching over my bars (or stretching my arm out under them) to grab a bottle from there.

This would make using a front rack with a basket on it, or even just a basket, or even just a handlebar bag, impossible.

Even the rear one is so massive that you wouldn't be able to use a saddle bag or a rear basket on some bikes.

I just personally think there are much better options that accomplish the same, but with more mounting options and a much lower price tag.

Who is this designed for? Pro racers? Ordinary cyclists?

For me, taking up that much room up front means that I can't run a handlebar bag or front basket. That alone is a dealbreaker.

A regular bike light and high mounted camera work just fine for me. And it doesn't interfere with anything else I have on the bike.

Even though I use an offline layer, the online is actually faster to render. It's like the cache system is broken, even though it clearly works when the device is in airplane mode.

However, I will admit that OSMAnd is the least performant of the map apps that use OSM data (or any other map/navigation app, really).

there should be no decorations on municipal crosswalks

You could make an argument that crosswalks should be painted a standard colour with expected markings, since it's a safety/accessibility issue that that point.

or displaying of flags supporting political, social, or religious movements or commercial entities

The people who put the package together lumped everything into the same category.

Sure, we should NOT have religious flags on our government buildings. By that token, we should remove any and all religion from those buildings and any texts, too. No mention of God, especially.

Commercial entities? Yeah, they don't belong on government flag poles.

Political? I'd need an example. I would not want to see the flag of various parties on a government building. That's just inappropriate.

But social movements? They stay. I WANT my local, provincial, and federal governments to show support for marginalized groups. That includes our LGBTQ, indigenous, disabled, visible minorities, etc.

I'm proud to see our local fire and police vehicles with rainbow flag stickers on them.

Separate the hate from the reasonable, and this petition might not seem so ass backwards.

I'm not sure if the thoughtful trucker has used a typical light designed for bikes, but they cast light in a much wider area than directly in front of them, and are considerably smaller/less expensive than this proposed design.

That said, this won't solve the "I didn't see you" problem, since it's rarely the fault of the cyclist when a driver is on their phone, fallen asleep, is under the influence, or sucks at driving. 🤷‍♂️

As a motorcyclist, this is one of the first things you learn in class - other people don’t see you because they don’t expect to see you.

Assuming others see you is like planning to make this situation happen.

I'm a very defensive cyclist (and motorist), but the idea that it's the most vulnerable people on the road or sidewalk who have to pay attention more than the person behind the wheel is exactly the thing that motorists want to hear.

Why can't car drivers pay attention? Why can't they follow the rules and stay below or at the posted speed limits? Why is it that "I didn't see you" is such an airtight defence, that society basically accepts it as normal without any consequence?

People are getting killed doing ordinary things, and it's because of someone else driving a multi-ton weapon without any regard for human life.

And it's not only humans. Some will purposely go out of their way to drive INTO animals, but maybe the animal should have been paying better attention. /s

I'm getting really tired and angry of seeing cyclists and pedestrians getting run over on a regular basis, and then getting blamed for not anticipating every idiot's move behind the wheel.

“I didn’t see you” it’s always that line no matter how much effort you make to be seen

The times when I've almost been hit by turning cars has been when I was visible enough to see from space. I can't do anything more to be seen.

If someone is admitting to be blind, they shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel. Or, they can admit to negligent driving and be fined. They can't have it both ways.

Laws of course differ, but I was under the impression that a light can be treated as a stop sign if it is not functioning properly (not changing in a reasonable amount of time).

If it's not working, then yes, everyone is expected to treat it like a stop sign. But I'm talking about lights where they will make you wait BY DESIGN, because they only respond to cars and trucks.

A cyclist isn’t going to trigger a sensor-driven light, and a sensor sensitive enough would be going off all the time, so it makes sense when all is clear to proceed.

Our region has started to put up sensors specifically for cyclists, and they reduce the wait time by a lot. They aren't meant to change the lights 100x a minute, but are meant to make intersections a bit more balanced.

But these are at 0.01% of the intersections in the region, so it means very little to me. It's an expensive project for something that the very free Idaho Stop can solve.

99% of drivers aren’t doing Idaho stops. That implies slowing, looking for traffic, and yielding if there is any. I see a lot of just going through the stop sign or even red light for a turn, half-ass looking as the turn is made, usually with a visible phone in their hand.

LOL. Fair play. I see more stop sign and red light runners in motor vehicles than I do cyclists behaving badly.

I once saw a car make a right turn at a red without even slowing down, nearly hitting a crossing pedestrian (an old man). The driver THEN slowed down, but only to yell at the pedestrian... There's something about being in a metal cage just turns people into lunatics.

I live in a country that doesn't allow Idaho Stops. In fact, those in charge aren't even interested in it.

But I use them because I know it's safer. I also treat red lights at empty intersections like a stop sign, because being forced to wait 10+ minutes for a car to stop so it can change to green is discrimination by design.

I'll also point out that 99% of DRIVERS are using Idaho Stops, so don't expect cyclists to oBeY tHe LaW.

I do my best to find alternatives to other software, and prefer to use self-hosted solutions, but the ones above aren't really easy to replace, so I'd rather just run them in a VM.

I've use VMs in windows to run Linux, so I'm aware of the performance hit and possible startup times (but I use snapshots for quick access). I'm not too concerned about that for any of these programs, since I'm only using them from time-to-time.

Several windows programs won't work with Wine. Would running a Windows VM be a better option?

In my persistence to fit Linux in my life, I'm curious if some "must have" Windows software will work better if I just ran a Windows VM within Linux. None of the software I need to work is needed to work continuously. They are basically programs that I fire up when needed, for a few minutes, then exited. Wine will install them, but not run them, so I'm hoping a VM is the answer as I'm not interested in dual-booting to run a few Windows programs occasionally.

If a car drives over a family the driver is going to have a trial for manslaughter charges. The driver is liable for their injuries and they legally have to have insurance to cover that.

This rarely happens (at least, in Canada), from what I've seen in recent pedestrian and cyclist fatalities.

For starters, most are hit and runs, and often go unsolved.

When someone is caught, they almost never see a manslaughter charge. To add insult to injury, they'll usually get a traffic violation and not a criminal charge. Failure to obey a road sign (even if that caused someone to die), for example.

And any consequences for actually killing someone tends to go with the lightest jail sentence you can imagine.

We had a truck driver kill sixteen people. He was sentenced to eight years in prison, but only served 3. Less than six months for every person killed. He would have gotten more if he hit someone's mailbox.

I've heard of testimonies where people who have had their partner killed by a driver are not covered financially and any money that gets paid out goes to their insurance company, and not their family.

Being a pedestrian or cyclist in north america is incredibly high risk.

We have two ninebot Max scooters, and they have tubeless air-filled tires. Combined, they have nearly 10,000km without a single issue with the tires.

As a general rule, I like to pump my tires (bike or escooter) before every ride, but they can go a week or two with very little to no pressure loss.

But I believe the reviewed model uses an inner tube, and it must be a nightmare to change in the event of a flat. The ninebot Max has this gel lining that acts as a tubeless tire sealant.

Adguard DNS... most queries are "Processed". What does that even mean?

I've been trying out NextDNS and comparing it to Adguard DNS (adguard-dns-.io), but unlike NextDNS, Adguard DNS' query log is quite vague, and I can't even tell if it's doing anything. 99% of the listed items in the Adguard DNS query log show up as "Processed", but the request clearly shows either advertiser or tracking as the categories. It seems that unless I actually click BLOCK, the status doesn't really list these requests as Blocked, except for a very small number. Is this normal behaviour? I assume any requests showing "processed" but not "blocked" are still going through, which is bad. NextDNS shows these same requests clearly as blocked or not, so at least I know that it's working. Anyone have any thoughts, or clarification on how it works?

Anyone find a way to actually get rid of ads in Aliexpress?

I'm talking about the ads that look like listings, but they have a small "AD" text on the corner. These ads are often grotesque and offensive, and I'd rather not see them at all. I've tried various block lists, but it's not removing them. MORE CONTEXT: Sorry, I should have been more specific! The gross/offensive ads seem to only be in the Aliexpress app (Android). On the mobile and desktop browser version, I still get the "AD" listings, but they are of products related to things I've purchased or browse through (all bike related items). I'd like to get rid of those, too, but I guess the ones in the app are the worst type. I do have Adguard for Android set to filter HTTPS requests from the Ali app, so I figure it's just a matter of finding the right filter. Hopefully, anyway!

I've got 32mm wide tires on my road/gravel bike. Currently looking at TPU tubes and I've got two options: - 32-47mm - 18-32mm So, is it better to get one over the other, or will they both work equally well? Never used TPU tubes before, so I wouldn't even have a reference to compare these.

    TEMU black hole

When I want something cheap, I usually hit Aliexpress (website). As I was looking at the Aliexpress app page on the Google Play Store to check its privacy details, TEMU came up as a recommended app. Now, my wife has used TEMU in the past, but since she often can't find her way around things, I downplayed her negative experience as "user error". That said, I went to the TEMU website and started looking around. I found something that was a reasonable price, but then get this message saying I could get this item free through the app... sigh. OK. I sign up with my usual fake/random credentials and add this "free" item to my cart. A spinning prize wheel comes up. Hey, I can get THREE free items now! Sweet. I spend the next 3 hours looking for stuff I can actually use, doom-scrolling through everything from women's underwear to t-shirts with assault rifle print. Literally something for everyone. LOL Then I select my third "free" item, and another spinning prize wheel comes up. "100% off the next $35". Ok. I didn't need more stuff, but hey, 100% off sounds like more free stuff! I spend another hour looking, keeping an eye on the amount "saved" (apparently $600+, for stuff that is sold on Aliexpress for maybe $25). When I finally get to check out, I get another spinning prize wheel. "100% off $100"!! Goddamn, I'm on a roll here. How do these guys make any money?!! More time looking... I must have spent well over 4 hours on their app. Time to check out. $67? Huh? What about 100% off and all that nonsense? Enter your phone number* * You must agree to get promotional texts, or you can't check out... hmm, maybe my wife wasn't wrong. In any case, there was no way to actually get anything "free". I deleted the app, deleted my account, and will never touch this scam ever again. Do people actually end up getting anything from Temu? I thought AliExpress was bad, but the experience is 1000x better.

Suggestions wanted re: Saving/archiving web pages

Hey guys, so it seems that Linkwarden isn't as good as I was hoping, since some websites will throw up a cookie popup or some other screen that basically prevents the capture. Firefox Screenshot seems to work well, but it saves a PNG, which isn't really text searchable. FF's "save page as..." feature seems to break things when viewing them back. Save to PDF is another option, and that seems to be decent. I'm not looking to copy entire websites, but I like to save web pages for later reference (i.e. instructions/specs). I use Synology Note Station, but they don't have a web clipper for Firefox... I'm fine with using a folder structure to store files, despite not being totally ideal when compared to Linkwarden. Does anyone have any other suggestions that perhaps I've missed? Nothing too complicated... ideally, as simple as a button click would be great.

Anyone use triathlon shorts instead of cycling shorts?

Ok, so here's my problem. I own quite a few padded shorts, ranging from $30 - $250 (bibs), and they feel great for the first 2-3 hours, then I get really uncomfortable in them. Not pain, but quite uncomfortable. I was able to ride 200km wearing only compression shorts with no padding, but I think I got lucky. Regular shorts/underwear always have issues because of the seams, so they aren't viable. I heard that triathlon shorts are *lightly* padded, so they may offer a nice in-between. Does anyone wear them? How do they compare to traditional cycling shorts?

To those using Tube Archivist, does it often freeze for you too?

I'll start by saying that I really love [Tube Archivist](https://github.com/tubearchivist/tubearchivist). It works flawlessly in doing what it does (archiving YouTube videos), and the UI and UX are great. However, no matter what browser I use (Edge, FF, Opera, Samsung mobile, FF mobile, etc...), I run into issues where the video will play, but the interface freezes... I can't do anything on the screen until I refresh. I don't have it set to any strange codecs, so videos are in vp9. But I also tried a few different codecs to see if the quality/size could be better optimized, and had the same issues with freezing UI then. If I run the videos through Jellyfin, they work fine. It's only through the TA web interface where things lock up. Is this normal? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this working better?

Checking chain wear when waxing chains.

So, I joined the world of waxed chains. So far, it's life changing. Quiet to the point that your think I'm running a belt drive, but more importantly, super clean and component preserving. But, I was thinking earlier, if wax fills in the gaps between the parts the wear, how would you actually get a true chain wear measurement? I've never heard of someone stripping the wax off to check for wear, and that would get incredibility wasteful to do it often. Zero friction Cycling doesnt mention anything special in regards to checking a waxed chain. So, would I go about checking the chain, waxed and all, and assume the numbers are pin point accurate?

Quick follow up re: my post "Advice wanted: Best/safest route between Pickering and Scarborough?"

Hey guys, just a quick update regarding my question: https://lemmy.ca/post/22882437 I did end up successfully riding from Oshawa to Vaughan and back over the weekend, using Finch as the bridge between Pickering and Scarborough. For the most part, I'm really happy with my route choice. The total trip was just over 162 km, and some highlights included: - The trans-Canada trail along Duffins Creek in Pickering was amazing. - There's a long-ass hill on Old Finch, just west of the zoo, that almost killed me on the way back (my folding bike is NOT geared at all for climbing, and I burned off any glycogen reserves by that point). - The Finch hydro corridor was nice... taking McNicoll before and after was not. Poor roads and aggressive drivers. - The Duncan Creek trail is also stunning. I'd 100% do this trail again if I'm in the area. - The cycling infrastructure in Vaughan was great... until it's not. There's a section of road along HWY 7 West of Centre St and east of the 400 that's just downright terrible. Where there is no bike lane, the roads are garbage and traffic is fast and aggressive. Where there is a separated bike lane, it was COVERED in rocks, metal, plastic, wire, and pretty much everything else you can imagine; the road, FYI, looked as if it was cleaned using a toothbrush. The raised cycling lanes west of the 400 were really, really nice. Overall, a really great ride. I'm not sure if I'll attempt the same ride using Taunton/Steeles at some point, since aggressive motorists going far in excess of 80 km/h just doesn't sound like fun. As a side note, my Varia radar clocked one guy going 126km/h...

Advice wanted: Best/safest route between Pickering and Markham?

Hey guys, hopefully this isn't too far out of the city to offer suggestions, but here's my problem: I'm planning a ride from East Oshawa to central Vaughan. I'd like to keep the route safe, but don't want to detour so far out-of-the-way, so a 4h one-way trip becomes a 7-hour one, since I'll still need to come back on the same day. I'll obviously need to avoid the waterfront trail, as it's quite out of my way. So, my options are either taking HWY 7 or Taunton/Steeles. Google street view shows me some pros and cons to both, but they also lead to totally different parts of Markham, and some cycling infrastructure there seems either disconnected or forces me to take some rather busy roads. Has anyone taken HWY 7 or Taunton/Steeles between Pickering and Markham by bike? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. EDIT: Finch Ave. looks to be another option.

Some websites are nearly impossible to use in FF due to slow performance

This has been bothering me long enough that I figured I'd check to see if anyone else is having the same issue, and more importantly, if there's a fix. Some websites, like Google Earth or various weather radar sites get so slow that they are unusable in Firefox. When I load the same sites in Edge, it's blazing fast, as I'd expect. Even Librewolf chugs on these sites. Any suggestions would be appreciated. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: First, thanks for all the input, guys. I wanted to say that I've tried a fresh FF profile, and the same slowness happens in Google Earth. I also confirmed that hardware acceleration is enabled. This problem isn't on all websites. For example, playing www.slowroads.io actually gives a higher framerate on FF than it does on Edge. So it seems to be that certain websites just suck ass. Some of you have said that Google Earth on FF works perfectly fine... on linux. At least it seems not to be a FF problem. LOL EDIT: Opera browser is just as smooth as Edge with G Earth. POSSIBLE SOLUTION?? Ok, so even though I was able to confirm that hardware acceleration was enabled, and the GPU was active while using FF, and the about:support showed that webrender was enabled, I noticed that on about:config the gfx.webrender.all setting was set to false. So, I enabled it, and tried again. Google Earth seems much smoother (not as good as edge, but better than before), and Tube Archivist no longer seems to freeze while a video is being played. Could this be the reason for my issues? If so, why was this option set to false by default?

Anyone use "Da Brim" on their helmet?

Now that summer is almost here, I'm looking for better ways to protect myself from the sun. I generally dislike sunscreen, but I do wear it while riding. The helmet visor "Da Brim" ([website](https://dabrim.com/)) caught my attention. Since I wear a huge-ass sombrero-style hat when I'm off the bike, I'm fine with the way Da Brim looks. For context, some of my summer rides might have me in 8-10+ hours of sun, which isn't good, even with sunscreen on. If Da Brim can make the experience more tolerable, I'm in! Almost time to replace my chainrings. A few questions.

Context: My 90s MTB still has its original Shimano chainring (crankarms say Alivo). The cassette was replaced several months ago, as was the chain and bottom bracket. No wear on the chain right now. The derailleurs are Alivio, and probably the original ones from the mid-90s. I don't have any reason or intention to replace those, although, I do have a Deore LX on my decommissioned 90s MTB that I could likely drop in, but I digress. LOL I guess two questions: 1. What would I need to provide to my LBS as far as measurements to get me a replacement? I understand that I'll likely need another BB and maybe(?) a chain, but I plan to stick with the same gearing. 2. Ideally, I'd want to find a 3x chainring where I can replace the crank arms and individual chain rings when needed. Will this be easy to find, considering the age and group set? Thanks in advance.

The continued allowance of untested autonomous vehicles on our nation’s roadways is unacceptable. The time for action is now!” To add to that, you should see how these "accident avoidance systems" plow through dummies during tests. At what point should the judge be responsible for putting someone like that out on parole? The justice system is supposed to work for the *victim*.
