Release notes for 50.09 (June 28, 2023): In this release, we're updating the engine from SDL to SDL2, and there are many optimizations to go along with it. Aside from the optimizations, SDL2 is also the stepping stone to ports. We have Linux compiling and playable; it just needs some testing. Moreover, there is now a(n experimental) multithreading option in the game settings that makes the game even faster! We also have some new individual tree graphics, and an update to grass ramps as well. This has been mostly the hard work of Putnam! Meanwhile I've started up on adventure mode - the long work of updating menus and adding audio has begun! Hopefully we'll have some progress to show their soon, as we continue updating fortress mode as well. **New stuff** * Updated to SDL2 and made many surrounding changes. Various performance gains! * Experimental multithreading is available from game settings. **Graphics additions/changes** * Some more trees now have individual graphics (maple, willow, cedar, larch, kapok, papaya, macademia.) * Updated some ramp images.
This year the Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament is being run over on the Bay 12 Forum. Come join and have fun reading about your poor gladiator and their struggles. Signups are open until July 5th, 15:00 GMT, but please sign up as soon as you can, since it can take a little while to get on the forum even if I'm monitoring it consistently.

So I deleted all my posts and comments 4 days ago now, and they have stayed deleted. I'm thinking if you leave your account active for a while afterwards, it doesn't trigger the "undelete" action, if it was ever a real thing. It was highly possible that peoples stuff they thought was being undeleted, was actually just the result of more private subreddits being opened back up. Content you have in a private subreddit will NOT be deleted, as it can't be accessed.

...but most people with any shred of empathy would be pushing for that in his shoes.
Empathy? In late-stage capitalism? 😏
I mean, so... I'm a software engineer who used to specialize in automation. I ended up having a crisis of conscience decades back, realizing that I was putting people out of work. "Hey, good job on that project, our client can afford to let 30 people go now!" never really felt like great praise to me. It actually felt really really shitty knowing the work I was doing was making it possible for the "nobility" to further gain back control of the "serfs".
I figured that the only way this could ever benefit society as a whole instead of shareholders and owners would be if we moved more to a society with things like UBI, with perhaps the people who end up getting something extra being the ones who actually DO the dirty jobs and provide actual worth to society, instead of becoming obscenely wealthy at the expense of empathy and good human spirit. Unfortunately, at least here in the states, anything that smacks of "socialism" automatically equals dictatorship (glossing over that capitalism offers just as many examples of being abused by the "ruling" class). So there's the whole zeitgeist to battle against before the comfortable and less-informed majority will even listen to anything that's in their best interest.
As you say, interesting times indeed. I'm not hopeful that we'll see that sort of shift in my lifetime however, sigh....

Comments are heavily focused on the title of the article and the opening paragraphs. I'm more interested in peoples' takes on the second half of the article, that highlights how the goals companies are touting are at odds with the most likely consequences of this trend.

TBF, American Presidential elections are already pretty controlled to guarantee certain outcomes, given how only 2 parties are ever really given any sort of legitimacy by the media. Throw in gerrymandering, and voting fraud, etc.

Maybe I'm browsing the fediverse at work and hardcore porn is frowned upon, so blurred thumbnails absolutely should be an option, if not the norm.

Doesn't the fact that they're blurred tell you that it's NSFW and therefore what you're looking for?

Kbin magazines need to make more use of assigning themselves tags to auto federate content in from, and then to use those same tags when posting. But like, nobody uses hashtags lol
EDIT: I also put an issue request in (202 I think?) to allow setting up that sort of functionality by fediverse link

@pixelpusher220 Hmm, I haven't ran into anybody using readit.buzz yet, but I'm willing to try to help you out! The first thing I would do is make sure that if there is an option for federation to turn it on. Maybe ask within the readit.buzz community how to do this. This is early days for a lot of the tools and instances springing up, so there are still kinks being worked out possibly as well there.
I know I can reference and link to my sub by referencing it as @DwarfFortress
@DwarfFortress@kbin.social
Maybe clicking on that above within readit.buzz will direct you to be able to subscribe?
In a pinch if you wanted to view the magazine directly, it is at https://kbin.social/m/DwarfFortress
ETA: The magazine names are usually case sensitive

I currently run a magazine, and have auto-federate tags set up to help bring in relevant content. However, a lot of content I would like to federate is not using hashtags in any capacity. Is there a way I can set the magazine up to federate based on a fediverse link instead? Specifics: I run [@DwarfFortress](https://kbin.social/m/DwarfFortress) I want to auto-federate in anything from [@dwarffortress](https://kbin.social/m/dwarffortress@lemmy.ml) regardless of if a hashtag is included. Thanks!

Ironically, this platform of federated smaller servers makes it impossible for users to hold an entire "subreddit" hostage like is happening on Reddit. It also makes it impossible for any one company to decide what the future of the Fediverse looks like. As my girl Martha would say, "It's a good thing."

@v13 Here's what I wrote to him, in case you're interested.
Dear /u/Spez,
I am tired of the value I provide as a contributor and user of Reddit not being fairly compensated while Reddit makes money. I'm gone until I start getting more money than you do for my content. It's not fair that you should be making money for something I freely provide.
Yeah, that's YOUR argument, funny how it doesn't go both ways, isn't it? You're such a hypocrite, and your ego has killed any desire for me to interact with Reddit anymore. You provide infrastructure, and you provide a name brand, and that's all you provide you arrogant little man. Your users provide all the value to Reddit, and they don't get paid either. Stop acting like you provide any fucking value, because you don't. You are pathetic.

I actually sent spez a private message on my way out, calling out what an arrogant hypocrite he is. He probably won't ever read it, but man it felt good writing it.
