The thing is that according to liberal ideas, the economy IS doing great.

Anyone to the left of Joe Biden recognizes that it isn't, but liberals are the majority of the democratic party. To them the "traditional" economic markers are the most important things to track, and those numbers all look good.

"Liberal" economic ideas have nothing to do with the living conditions of the average person, they have everything to do with the capitalist class being happy and "opportunity" being available to the working class. That's why the economy in the 1910s could be described as healthy even though people were literally forced to live in tenement houses and were being locked into factories. That's also why many liberal economists say that it's possible for unemployment to get too low, because apparently that's considered bad.

The question Joe Biden is answering when he says the economy is doing well is "are the capitalists happy and continuing to expand capitalism to extract as much wealth as possible from the working class," and right now that answer is clearly yes.

Me too! I was very satisfied with this whole season, and the finale really capped it off well.

The SFX budget was REALLY well used here. They've cut down the scale of the battles, but they've made the SFX look crazy good, and I'm fine with that trade.

Hoppers death was significantly better than in the book. That made me tear up, where in the book I never really cared that much when he died because you didn't get enough time with him.

Only plot I was frustrated with this episode was Nynaeve, I think she needed a bit more of a role here.

Really the landlords are the victims here, not the tenants paying their mortgage for them plus a little extra for profits. Clearly the tenants have committed the crime of not having good enough credit for a loan, or the crime of not having enough for a down payment, so they aren't worthy of owning property.

No no it's the landlord who has the real problems, because they could ein a shaky financial situation of "selling the second house iown" if the market dips!

In my experience (I'm a few years out of date with how the app works now, keep that in mind) it's like 90% looks. You CAN build up a profile, but IIRC only the first sentence of it shows up on your picture. A person has to see your picture and that tagline, be curious enough to actually go to your profile before swiping, then read your profile if they're going to use it to judge you on.

Most of the people I know who used tinder, myself included, didn't really do that much. We just swiped based on looks, and if someone was borderline then we looked at the profile to make a decision. But that was pretty rare, most people it was a pretty clear yes/no based on looks.

The apps is designed to encourage that behavior. When I used it profiles were REALLY not being encouraged, IDK if that has changed (I would guess it hasn't).

I agree, but that just makes this even scummier on Tinder's part. The people who own and make the app know that, they're doing this anyway. So they're targeting people who are already desperate and lonely, and giving them what they will inevitably see as a "lifeline" which actually may make their chances worse.

No, you just heavily implied it. If you didn't mean to then you need to edit you comment. And I laid out how I clearly disagree with the idea that this is "aimed at creeps," because it's aimed at people who have been made desperate by the predatory nature of Tinder's algorithm. Desperation doesn't necessarily make someone creepy, but it does make Tinder a lot of money.

Also, why are you making it seem like someone sending a message to someone else on a dating app is somehow a kind of, like, assault? You're using very aggressive language to describe normal behavior by people trying to date, AKA talking to other people who they may be interested in

Why are you assuming that men who can't get matched are automatically creeps? That's not at all a good assumption, and is a BIG part of the problem with tinder.

Back before I met my now fiancee, I never got tinder matches. I only got matches on OKCupid, back when you were allowed to message people before matching with them. That's how I met my now fiancee, too.

Tinder is incredibly toxic by design and is designed to damage people's mental health. They've taken dating, something that requires a lot of human interaction, and reduced it to a literal slot machine which tinder can rig however they want. They've reduced finding a partner to "does this person look attractive to you?" which is NOT how dating works IRL. I know a lot of people who met their partners IRL and were not attracted to them until they started getting to know each other as friends, then fell for each other.

Tinder not only exploits the problematic beauty standards in our society, but actively makes them worse. If you're not getting matches you feel unattractive, because every piece of feedback the app gives you says you are. It doesn't matter how charismatic or interesting you are, it doesn't matter how much you and a potential match may have in common, all that matters is the pictures you put up, and maybe the first sentence or two of your bio.

The whole system is designed to make people using it feel desperate, men and women both, and this $500 to message first thing is incredibly scummy. They suck you in, kill your self confidence, depress you, then offer you what seems like a lifeline.

This is like a casino offering you a slot machine with a 50% higher win rate for a monthly subscription.

This thread is full of people laughing at people who would pay for this, but I actually kinda empathize.

I got REALLY lucky and met my now fiancee on a dating app. It took about 2 years of trying to meet her, and in that time ithink I had maybe 5-7 dates. ALL of those were on OKCupid, back when it let you message people without matching. I am not the most good looking person, but I could get a good first impression through a message.

Tinder though? It killed my self confidence when I used it. I never got a single date from tinder. It is designed tonot get you dates, unless you're SUPER attractive, especially if you're a man. A lot of it is that there are so many more men on dating apps than women, I know that objectively. But it SUCKS when you're actively looking for a partner and swiping every single day to either never get matches or get matches who are bots.

For a lot of guys like me being able to get a good first message in feels like the only chance, and if you're seriously looking and starting to feel desperate (and these apps are designed to make you feel desperate) then dropping $500 for a month of being able to get a shot may not actually seem crazy.

These apps have designed a "dating economy" around themselves that tells people that they are not attractive or a desirable partner if they aren't getting matches, then deliberately tailored their algorithms to manipulate people into coming back every day for a chance to meet someone. It's slot machines, but with romantic relationships, and it convinces people that dating is like gambling. And these apps want you to feel like they are the only way to date, and if you're not "winning" and getting dates they make it clear that it's YOUR fault, and if you drop a little money you'll get some matches.

Yes, some creeps will pay for this to send dick pics, but I think most people who will pay forthis are actually desperate and convinced that it's their only chance at getting a date. It's disgusting these apps are allowed to do what they have done. And I say all of that as someone who won the damn slot machine jackpot and came out with a long term partner.

I personally think these apps are doing some serious harm to our society and need to be regulated but that's a different discussion

I hate the crypto market so much, but ESPECIALLY nfts.

Nfts were blatantly a scam. It 2as a very in your face scam, it was giving money to someone else for literally nothing. It was obvious time from day 1 that it was just an avenue for rich people to launder money and have it look legit.

But the media fell for the new trend hook, line, and sinker. Instead of telling people it was a scam from day 1, which it *obviously was," the major news networks (at least here in the US) talked about nfts as if it was a legit new type of cool investment. They stopped short of telling people to buy them so that they couldn't get sued, but they hyped the fuck out of NFTs. CONSTANTLY. Any time I listened to any cable news for more than 30 minutes around mid 2021, I heard NFTs get mentioned at least once, and very rarely was that mention skeptical or a warning.

And now all the people who bought into the hype are left holding the bag, as always, a d the rich people who scammed them get to keep all the money, as always, and the media is facing no repercussions for their contribution to the scam, as always. It's so frustrating to watch

You actually believe that? The people who claim that people like Werner von Braun didn't commit any crimes are the CIA and Braun himself. All of the records from Germany were destroyed. It's essentially just taking his word on it to believe he was only involved because "he had to be."

He was literally a member of the SS, the wing of the nazi government that was directly responsible for the Holocaust. He was photographed repeatedly with himmler himself, in uniform. He claimed that those were just ceremonial photos that he had to participate in the keep his career. He also claimed not to agree with the Nazis politically.

Why would you believe anything that a member of the SS said? Especially one as important to the Nazis as von Braun was.

Of fucking course he was never found guilty of any war crimes, the US was actively trying to recruit him. They didn't want to prosecute their newest asset, a man who directly led to the US becoming the globally dominant force it became during the space race. He was useful so the US government deliberately didn't investigate him seriously, took him at his word that he totally wasn't a real nazi, and then used him to invent more rockets for them.

This isn't a thing we need to "solve," this reeks of a capitalist looking at graphs of our emissions and going "we could cut emissions by 1% here and not have to actually change our habits at all!" This isn't the problem causing climate change.

The energy sector accounts for over 70% of our emissions. Instead of trying to stop emitting less than 1% by pouring money into genetically manipulating plants to need less fertilizer, why don't we instead cut 30% or more by replacing coal plants with solar, wind, and nuclear power?

The best game in the genre IMO is elite dangerous, because their ship to ship combat is so damn fun to play that I can hop in for a bit and have a blast without having to engage with the other systems that are often painfully boring.

The problem here is that people what the feeling of being explorers and finding new things, but video games inherently can't provide that. There aren't computers strong enough to produce thousands or millions of planets that all have genuinely interesting features on them that are worth exploring for. "Exploration" in current space Sims is basically "stick your name on something someone else hasn't already stuck their name on, maybe grab some resources from it, and leave." That gets dull very fast.

Developers COULD choose instead to make a couple of good, big planets that are interesting and full of actually good content. They could give you a reason to explore beyond "look other planets cool."

If you made 1000 planets and only 10 of them are at all interesting, and your game is centered on exploring other planets and not really focussed on much else, you've made a boring game.

Hard disagree here. I'm a rabid wheel of time fan who has read the books at least 6 times.

Ir would be downright impossible to "stick to the source" for book one (or really, any if them) and have it be good on film. It just wouldn't work on film, there is too much going on. The story would feel like it drags and is being forcefully stretched out, because the book is rather repetitive. That repetition works in a book because you are getting to read the characters inner thoughts, and in paper it adds tension that, for example, Rand and Mat are unsure whether the next place they stay will be full of dark friends.

But after the third time they get chased out by dark friends a TV audience would be like "OK they did this already get on with it." Repetition on TV gets boring FAST.

And the magic system is all kinds of messy in the books. They're diving into it a bit more now, but it's still got Tobe simplified for screen. You can't convey characters thoughts on screen, which basically neuters the whole system. The book is VERY exposition heavy, and that gets boring real quick on screen. Look at the LOTR theatrical VS extended editions. There is a reason that Bilbo talking about Hobbits at the beginning got cut. I like that scene, but it also is too much exposition to drop on the viewer right after the intro, which is also exposition. EOTW is like half exposition, and most of the books are at least a third exposition. That all has to get cut or reworked to be actually fun to watch without being super preachy. It's

Listen to Brandon Sanderson talking about the adaptation of Mistborm he has been working in for ages now. He has said that he had to make big, fundamental changes to the characters and story to make it work on film. He said his first draft was closest to the book, and that it was quite bad.

The biggest fuckup season 1 of the show did was not including the prologue. Idk why they cut it, it's such a good intro. Besides that, I thought they did alright. Season two has been much better so far, and has shown that they really do understand the core of this story and all of the characters in it.

    Help with GPU selection

So I have a kind of interesting situation going on here. I recently replaced my gaming rig's 2080 with a 4070ti that I picked up at a good price. Then, I put the 2080 into my home server and got it up and running with plex. Now, it has always been my intent to put that 2080 into a computer for my fiancee after we get married sometime in the next year. So, that leaves me with a conundrum: when I pull the 2080 out, I'll need a decent GPU to replace it with for the plex server to help with transcoding. That's why I'm here What GPUs should I look at? I don't want to break the bank and would prefer to stay under $600 when I do this, if possible. I'm not getting a Titan X which I keep seeing recommended, I can't even get one of those for my own gaming rig let alone for a plex server that only we and a couple of friends use. I'd like something that can run up to 4 4K transcodes at once- I don't think we'll ever get more than that running at any given time since most of the use this server gets is in the same house via direct play, no transcoding needed. Any suggestions?

[Help] I have been having ALL of the possible issues with NextCloud AIO and I'm about to give up completely if I can't get it working soon

I've NEVER had this many problems with a docker container before, this is getting WAY past the point of being ridiculous. I'm trying to set up the nextcloud AIO for docker behind NGINX Proxy Manager. Right now, I have everything set up such that I can go to the URL that I set up and get to a nextcloud page. But the only page I can access is an error page that looks like this: ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/81aa3a41-7a23-4275-b143-0241598f9e73.png) I have no idea how to fix this. I've already set `'maintenance'=>false` in my config.php file. I'm completely at a loss here, I can't do ANYTHING else in nextcloud other than look at this stupid error page. The AIO documentation is completely worthless here, it doesn't give any guidance. And google isn't helping either, every thread either says to add the above to my config (which I obviously already did) or just restart apache (which I've also done). I'm getting seriously annoyed with this and I'm about to give up altogether unless someone here knows how to get past this stupidity. Edit: Okay I've done something REALLY stupid now. I figured I could just re-install nextcloud to see if I could fix this. So, I removed all of the containers, deleted the data and database folders, re-made the folders, and re-deployed everything. Now NOTHING works and I can't get nextcloud to re-do its initial setup. But it looks like now maybe it is? IDK I'm lost here, I'm annoyed and it's late and I should probably stop. So apparently nuking everything and letting nextcloud re-install itself fixed this, somehow. I have no idea why.

Firefox is badly broken for me, and I've never been able to figure out why

I switched back to firefox last week because I wanted to get away from Chromium. I was previously using Brave. I have been having a MULTITUDE of issues with FF this week, and if I can't figure out how to resolve them I'm going back to Brave. I've tried everything I can think to do to fix it, and nothing has worked. I've never seen any of these issues on any other browsers, this is 100% a firefox problem. I'm on the latest build of FF on Windows 10 and have the following plugins: - Bitwarden - UBlockOrigin - Simple Login - Multi-account Containers - ProtonVPN - Old Reddit Redirect - RES - Enhancer for Youtube The issues I'm having: 1. Occasionally FF just hangs, won't respond to inputs, and the only way to recover it is to kill the process via control panel. When FF crashes like this I NEVER see the crash reporter, it's like FF thinks nothing happened and everything is fine. 2. Sometimes my tabs just don't work. Like, I'll open a tab, type something in to search it, and it just hangs. I had this problem for YEARS when FF was my daily browser before switching to brave 2 years back because it got too annoying. This issue is COMPLETELY RANDOM, and happens within 1 minute of making a new tab- sometimes it will happen when I first try to navigate anywhere inside the new tab, sometimes it happens after I'm in a website. 3. Sometimes FF refuses to start. I'll turn the computer on, click FF, and nothing will happen- then I'll go into control panel, kill the FF process, and try again until it works- usually when I do this the browser crashes at least once when it starts. I can't make any sense of why this browser is so unstable for me, but it is SIGNIFICANTLY worse than it was last time I abandoned FF. I actually have FEWER addons than I did when I used FF as my daily driver before. If I can't figure this out this time I'm just not going to look back. I have tried: 1. Safe mode. This seems to fix it for a bit, but eventually either tabs stop working or the browser crashes. I'm pretty confident this is NOT an issue with any of my plugins- I'm using either official FF ones (multi-account containers) or very reputable plugins from good sources. 2. Turning on/off hardware acceleration. This has no impact whatsoever 3. I have repeatedly deleted all cookies, history, and cache, and reset the startup cache. 4. Clean install FF 5. Refresh FF 6. Last time I tried to fix FF before switching to Brave, I found that having the FF Profiler running AT ALL TIMES actually seemed to make things a little bit better- but the profiler never once turned up anything useful. I'm at my wits end here. I really want to be able to move off of chromium but FF is so incredibly annoying to use in its current state that I simply can't do that until I find fixes to these issues. Has anyone here got any clue what else I can do to try to diagnose this?

Where do you guys get .srt subtitle files?

I have a few videos I ripped from CDs that I'm loading onto a personal plex server, but all of them use the type of subtitles that will force the video to transcode. Is there an easy place for finding .srt files? I figured this community would know...

Everything has LEDs now and they drive me nuts

Why does every small appliance or useful home electronics item have the BRIGHTEST LEDs in them? I bought a new fan for our bedroom Sunday. It has 4 speed settings, and LEDs to display which setting you're on. Just like every other electrical device in our bedroom, I had to cover the LEDs with electrical tape because they are TOO DAMM BRIGHT. That one light was more than bright enough for me to see in the room with all the lights off. I can't sleep well if there's a lot of light like that, especially blue light, and it's like every fucking electronics manufacturer used the same extra bright blue LEDs. All of our power strips have them. Same brightness. The fans have them. Don't even get me started on digital clocks and the plague of bright LEDs that they bring about Many charging plugs have them built into the plug itself. Even some fucking light switches have them now! I have about 6 different things in our bedroom that have electrical tape over their completely unnecessary LEDs. Why has this become such a common thing? Is this really something most people want? To have a room that is never actually dark even with the lights turned off?

Another Outing at Occoquan Bay NWR- Saw the Eagles!

I spotted the fledgling Bald Eagles this morning, there were 2 in the nest I saw. I'm told there are 2 other nests on the property all with fledglings. I didn't see the adults, except for *maybe* at a distance- but there are so many ospreys that at the distance I was dealing with it was very hard to tell. ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/cf33e60c-902c-4e42-9a9b-8987c0f88285.jpeg) I also saw a Brown Headed Cowbird: ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/8abcaa4f-b64b-4fcc-985a-d24cec883836.jpeg) And got some great pictures of a Great Blue Heron: ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/923c65de-2c17-41ab-8007-00f27d74c7b1.jpeg) There were also some nesting Red-Bellied Woodpeckers: ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/5157f70b-ee57-4f37-bb25-a5ec2b844912.jpeg)

I suppose if you're more orthodox then you won't see this until after Shabbat, and that's fine. Is anyone doing anything fun tonight and tomorrow? We didn't go to services- my Fiancee and I are both feeling a little ill, so we didn't want to risk spreading anything. Tomorrow I'm going to set up a new bird feeder post so I can hang more feeders and hopefully attract more birds!

Many Birds in Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Preserve

I took a hike there this afternoon to look for Bald Eagles. I didn't see the eagles (thought I heard them!) but I did see a lot of other stuff! I didn't get any pictures of Ospreys, but I saw at least 6-7 of them. Here's the highlights. The main picture of the post is a Great Crested Flycatcher. He landed on a tree like 20 feet in front of me, and was very polite as I took a couple of pictures. Here's a Prairie Warbler doing what I'm pretty sure is a mating display: ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/0df8a143-b3e3-4bb9-b438-8b9838a15451.jpeg) Here's what I'm fairly certain is a female Blue Grosbeak. The pictures I got show the blue patch on her shoulder, and that yellowish streak in the wing: ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/39bd1f28-55e1-4614-9438-46027a90083b.jpeg) ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/1fe1d249-4e55-4ad6-a41e-23aa21aa9030.jpeg) I got a picture of what I thought was a tree swallow, but when I looked at it in Lightroom I realized that it was actually a Bank Swallow; I wasn't expecting to see any here but the band around its neck is clearly visible, and the spot on the belly is *barely* visible in the photo. ![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/1ae217ad-ab9d-4d68-8ffb-d0b236d47541.jpeg)

Can we change the "post" icon?

When I make a new post in the app, the icon to click to post the post is a plus sign. Can that get switched to the paper airplane icon you see in most other social media apps for posting something? I think that's kind of become the standard...

Gear Recommendation Requests for Wildlife Photography

Hello! I've recently been getting into bird watching, and would like to start photographing more of the birds I see. I have been getting some good shots with my camera through my office window, but if I want to do more than that my equipment currently is pretty limited. My Camera is a Nikon D5100, and I've had it for ages- I love this camera. I have a 55-200mm lens on it that I got way back when I got this camera, but that's a very limiting range- 200mm really isn't enough to do a lot of bird photography. I know that when I get a better lens, it will likely be large enough to warrant a better tripod than what I currently have and possibly even a gimbal mount (though, that may be a future upgrade). So, those are the things I want recommendations for- telephoto lenses that will fit my camera, a good tripod, and gimbal mounts. I can't break the bank, I know this will be VERY hard for good telephoto lenses but I'd like to stay under $800 for the lens if at all possible- that way I can upgrade sooner rather than later, the tripod and gimbal can be future upgrades I save up for. I'd like a tripod that will last me a good long time and is quite sturdy- the one I currently have is pretty cheap, and while it's sturdy enough for now I don't think it will do a good job with a heavy lens beyond a 200mm focal length. Thanks!

    Rate Limit Error uploading images

Title says it all; I was uploading some images to post and got a rate limit error. I'm assuming that means there is a limit to how often you can upload images, but searching around I wasn't able to find what that limit is. Does anyone have any documentation on that?

Our group recently killed a Mind Flayer in the most hilarious way

Our DM uses cards which add a special effect on critical success and critical failure. Some of them are benign, some of them are severe. There are 4 of us in the group. We walk into the room, and the mind flayer immediately stunlocks 3 of us. My character is a Loxodon Cleric built like a tank, but he can't break the stun because I keep getting shit rolls. On its next turn, the mind flayer runs over to me. It goes to reach out its tentacle attack which will flay my mind and make me its slave... and crit fails. Crit fails *with advantage.* The card that got drawn for the crit fail made it injure its tentacles on my armor. That may not have been a problem, except that they got injured in such a way that they could not be used until the next long rest. Think, like, breaking an arm, or something. But that meant that ALL of the flayer's most dangerous attacks were now unusable. So we fucking thrashed it in the next turn, because it was completely defenseless. In our world these monsters are extraordinarily rare and most people wouldn't even know they exist- when we brought its body back to the wizard in town he FREAKED OUT and we were just like "yeah this weird tentacle monster was there, it acted like it was a big deal or something but it died when we breathed at it with no problem at all."

Reddit just banned me for "Report Abuse"

This is now the SECOND time reddit has given me a 7 day ban for report abuse, and it's the second time the ban was *total bullshit.* Both came for reporting content in r/Ukraine which had hit the front page. The first ban was for reporting a comment which used the word "orc" to describe Russian people *multiple times* and was, at least in my opinion, doing so in a clearly racially charged way. I actually got banned from the subreddit for commenting in that thread- someone was asking what orc meant and I said "it's a dehumanizing term being used right now for Russian people." Then I got the full-site ban. The admins lifted the ban when I appealed it. That comment has since been deleted. This latest time was for reporting the *literal beheading video* that hit the front page. It was explicitly against reddit TOS. I regularly report content in other subreddits that is openly racist or ridiculously, over the top gorey. Never once have I gotten hit was a "report abuse" ban. Why the fuck is there even a "report abuse" ban in the first place? How does it work? It seems to me like the mods of a subreddit can claim that a post or comment is having reports abused on it and the admins will just blanket ban everyone who reported it. Or is that just true for this particular subreddit? I already wasn't using Reddit because of the blackout, now they may have just made me never want to return even if they do cave on third party apps. This is just ridiculous.

What's everyone's favorite book in the series? (Spoilers all)

I'm personally a huge fan of Lord of Chaos. It's always a high point when I re-read the series. I really like all of the subtle foreshadowing of what's coming up, all of the careful politics and groundwork that RJ laid for the latter half of the series, and then of course Dumai's Wells is such an incredible moment in the series.

Some Useful Links for Information About the Series

Nobody seems to have posted here yet, so I'll start with some useful resources for readers and show watchers alike. I personally think that [TarValon.net's Library](https://library.tarvalon.net/index.php?title=Tar_Valon_Library_Index_-_The_Wheel_of_Time) is the best Wheel of Time resource for people who are currently on their first read-through of the series. They have excellent chapter summaries for helping you remember what happened 5 books ago, and their chapter summaries are, in my experience, meticulously spoiler-free. They are very careful about marking spoilers on TV, and hiding them so that you don't accidentally find yourself reading them. The [Wheel of Time Wiki](https://wot.fandom.com/wiki/A_beginning) is generally well maintained and accurate, but be warned- it is **extremely full of spoilers** and spoilers are often **not tagged and in introductory paragraphs of pages.** I hate that it is indexed so high on google, because a lot of the search results for main characters immediately show end-of-series spoilers. Brandon Sanderson is very active on Reddit, and sometimes talks about the Wheel of Time. His username is [u/mistborn](https://old.reddit.com/user/mistborn/). Be warned, his comments contain spoilers for all of the Wheel of Time, as well as for all of his other currently released books. He interacts with fans quite a bit, and has some great discussions with them- but many of them are very full of spoilers. For TV show news, [The Wheel of Time Twitter Account](https://twitter.com/TheWheelofTime) is a good go-to. They may occasionally post mild book spoilers, but nothing serious. [Rafe Judkins's twitter](https://twitter.com/rafejudkins) is also a good place for news.
