Gamejolt has a so called Fireside for gamers to stream to each other, and I planned to redesign it for peertube-like or actual peertube streaming.
A sort of a virtual family TV place with players deciding who will stream next.
Yes, art jams and art assets are an absolute must. I also think there should be a possibility for devs to indicate that they need help with art or artists to indicate that they are available for help games. And that this needs to be right on the front page.

Atheneum looks cool, they are currently too tied to flatpaks though. One could have a special place on the game page for flatpacks, but then one could just upload a game directly to flathub. I can try to make cute slots for package repos links though so that devs are properly encouraged.
The thing with itch and other store games is that they are supposed to be portable and run from the folder.
So, maybe it is also about atheneum supporting portable games.
lib.reviews looks alright. They will need to federate though. so that reviews are auto-applied to game pages.
Houkime 3 years ago • 100%
Firebase here was used to store user client settings.
I disabled this (It is using defaults) and also deleted this from package deps.
The value of the game being stored on the server is that games are usually big (100+ mb) and for example git forges tend to have strict limits on file size. Unlike with peertube though, the headcount of games is way smaller than the count of videos, so largish uploads at game stores are totally ok, and also torrenting might be unnecessary, at least at first.
It is also used to count downloads. This sort of harmless analytics i plan to reenable in the future. Views and downloads. Maybe browser plays.
It is everything i use on itch, and it should be enough for gamedevs to roughly measure interest.
It will also be used if there will be payments eventually, or at least download tokens that you purchase from the dev manually.
The scheme with manual download tokens can be wider than just monetary payments. It can also be about promotion or even code contributions (not neccessariy to the same game! A dev can just say: Contribute to Godot in a nontrivial way and i will give you a token).
Or just manual handout of the game to people the dev knows/decides to give access. Like with follow requests on masto.
I believe that sort of schemes could be especially popular with LGBTQA+ communitites, just as locked accounts are.
I do however think that it might be benefitial to separate the services of storage and jamming, if only just to allow parallel evolution. It can be done on protocol level so that for example gamejolt like servers can federate with more lightweight jam servers.

if itch app supported making game pages, participating in jams and organizing them, i would totally go for it. But it does not, and making this right takes a lot of time because it needs a lot of feedback. It is a human thing.
Houkime 3 years ago • 100%
Not really.
They have an opensource desktop/mobile client for downloading and managing games but it has a severely limited functionality and does not support jams.
The full-featured web frontend on itch.io is closed.
I would actually like to fork itch's frontend more because it is almost js-optional, but nope.
I organize Fedijams. Like this one https://itch.io/jam/fedijam-5 These are foss jams and they try to use fediverse and Matrix for promotion and coordination, but they still have one proprietary tool in the loop: itch.io, a game store. This is a problem for jams not only by being an ideological incoherency: it is practical too. People seem to be uncomfortable/shy to even hit the join button there (it requires an account), often opting in to just join our [matrix chat] (https://matrix.to/#/#fedijam:m.wfr.moe). And other people who see the low count are less interested as a result. So, i thought, that for federated game developers, at least for jammers, something much better needed, safer to use and adaptable for specific needs and culture. ## A Federated Gamestore ### What is the bare usable minimum? * Ability to upload games. * Ability to host jams (event scheduling, submitting games and rating) * No federation. Yes, for FediJams even just a self-hostable gamestore would be useful. But just that will be very poor and unappealing. ### Self-respecting minimum: * Decorating game pages * Decorating jam pages * Not being spartan The last one is very important for games and gamestores. The concept of game is about joy and having a good relaxed time. Also, by looking at non-spartan Misskey, i have noticed much more mainstream people. On federated foss network. ### Basic federated configuration: * Jam federation: between servers, with Mobilizon, and with Masto/Pleroma/Misskey * Federated game and jam comments * Federated game search ### QoL: * Search by license * Jam tagging * Explore better jam interest gauges that just 'joins'. federation might help with that. ### Life: * Payments? * Donation integration? ## Making this happen Some days ago i started a fork of Game Jolt game store. https://notabug.org/Houkime/gj-fedifork-frontend Upstream Game Jolt (MIT license) has a ton tracking built in and i also temporary curbed realtime communication/streams that will be the hardest thing to support (after potential payments?) and will need a lot of redesign anyway. Using Game Jolt frontend as a base provides a lot of visual polish, page editing and anti-spartancy out of the box, and those things seem to be the most difficult and most limiting to get for foss projects. But Game Jolt does not provide the server, so this one i need to write myself (I am looking at peertube as a reference/template). The frontend does provide though database models ^_^

Imo it is more important whether the site can work with no js and no cookies than it being officially foss.
If you can throw js out of the window - the amount of bad stuff that can happen is drastically reduced. And what you can already see in the html source of the page is literally what you get.
And yes, there is such amount of websites (incl foss ones) and making them is so easy that maybe the constructive benefit to the humanity of opensourcing a particular one is minimal.
At least unless it is literally a thing that threatens the privacy of billions of people. But those are not going foss or js-optional any time soon.

I am not sure what is the point of working at/with Ubisoft if you want to change anything. It's also not like game developers have no other workplaces paid well enough. One collaborates with a company that is for long years openly dismissive of both their users and devs and is super conservative in their designs. It is not for fame either, because +- no player will ever know their names.
It feels just strange. These people are fighting for what exactly? For better Ubisoft that was never theirs and never promised to be theirs? For little control over company which concept is clearly at odds with their mental state and which will continue to be at odds with them for many years to come even if they have a seat and will just slowly drain their life away?
Isn't forming their own company or joining one with closer views like a bazillion times better and lifespan-caring?

Posting this here too.
It seems like even purely realtime genres like MOBA can be federated!
Base layer: Players have usual fedi-like accounts and social interactons.
On top of that, federated matchmaking (according to skill levels).
BUT each individual battle is held on some single server (no matter how chosen).
Each individual battle can be implemented in at least 2 ways:
Classic
There is a server, and it hands out temporary tokens for the match to each participating player via federation.
Players use them to connect and to be recognized by the server.
Server records the results for the federation.
P2P mesh
Godot has webrtc-based abilities for p2p mesh multiplayer. In this case, federation coordinates the mesh bootstrapping process and records the match results. Most probably by being a 'server peer', see godot docs on th topic. Or by just trusting the participants on th results (some primitive consensus?)
However, if the results are not needed, then federation involvement ends when the mesh is established. Kudos to https://mastodon.technology/@lucasfs7 for coming up with the idea of federated mobas and for long discussions at https://matrix.to/#/#fedijam:m.wfr.moe
Allows to connect to Matrix servers from inside Godot games, be it for chat or for multiplayer. Was refurbished for 3.x godot branch to use it in https://itch.io/jam/fedijam-4

I can also confirm the easiness of setup.
In fact, conduit is so easy to setup that i just packed it into my linux release of Federated Triangle Of Doom https://houkime.itch.io/federated-triangle-of-doom
And how i packed it is i just included the release binary, a short config file and a oneline script to spin the thing up.
And it works just from the folder. Since static Rust.
A foss gamejam for federated people is held once again! \^_\^ We will make games during a week and compete. We now make more focus on the possibility to federate games - there was a relatively successful, even if simplistic case. So, especially if you want to try fedi-focused game development or even to federate with some other participants on spot, come along and join - no other place to try this sort of stuff currently. (Federation is not a requirement, it is ok to just make a game, learn and receive feedback.)
From the perspective of Fediverse Futures, this is a more practical brainstorming on the theme of federated gaming and just fedi-aware game development. (see abstract discussion here https://lemmy.ml/post/87083) Practical meaning: we go and try make simple prototypes in a week. Stupid, too simplistic, absurd, anything. We also make a competition out of it. So come join and make some of the fediverse futures a reality. \^_\^
Yes. We are doing this again. Coding foss games in a week. Haven't ever done a game? Will be your first one! Never coded? Game coding is easy to learn! (also look GDevelop) This time we are more leaning into federated gaming because we now have a better idea of how to make simple federated games, even the ones with graphics.
Houkime 3 years ago • 100%
And of course, one of the wildest ideas that was born in FediJam discussions is that 2 or more federating games do not need to be THE SAME game, or even the same genre.
And this kind of stuff is what can make game-fediverses really unique.
Houkime 3 years ago • 100%
One of the other ideas i had is that even many realtime games have some game mech that is not completely realtime. Think events like raids and traders in Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress, think belts in Factorio, and especially cargo rockets (in both Factorio and Rimworld).
Think jumpgates in X universe and other similar games (when used by npc's).
Even if one cannot for some reason connect realtime to another server, one can still send a sort of package or even an autonomous agent to it, like people send probes to the outer space where the signal latency is high.
The logic of such agents might be predefined/configurable like with Rimworld raiders, or even scriptable (constrained by the game logic).

Which protocol is used? Can Mastodon use it too?
Has a matrix client inside, so can use standard Matrix servers for multiplayer: local or remote. Dead simple. Creates a chat. Post 'boom' to it - triangle spawns. Source: https://notabug.org/Houkime/triangle

You can join at any point until the submission ends. *Note: A gamejam is a kind of hackathon where we try to make games on a theme announced at the jam start in a limited time (in this case, a week). Submitted games are rated and then we have a winner. That is, if we have more than one submission. Come jam with us and submit yours \^v\^ !*
