The absolute best arcade racer to me was always NFS Hot Pursuit 2 for PS2. The physics were so much fun and the cars were a curated selection of cool.
Always loved the Project Gotham Racing series, especially 3. Tons of fun to drift in those games. The Kudos system was definitely a unique feature.
Been playing through the Ridge Racer games most recently. Damn these are just fun to play.
Sega Rally Championship will always stand out as some of the best driving physics early on.
Art of Rally and Art of drift are hella fun "zen" games with a unique art style.
I was always a sucker for some of the cash-in Fast and Furious era car fad games. Juiced, Tokyo Extreme Racer (out before all of it) Street Racing Syndicate, NFS Underground, Midnight Club 3. They're all fun but driving is always just ok.
My short list though: Gran Turismo 4 Forza Motorsport 4 or 6 (4 is less grindy I feel) NFS Most Wanted 2

Aim lower.
It sounds shitty but there’s merit. Think of it like an RPG, where you grind on low level fodder until you have enough confidence to land where you really want. Also, you may find that people who you’ve generally considered “unattractive “ in the past are actually really great because they’re genuinely decent people.
Bag a few 2 or 3 girls (by your standards) so you feel confident and good enough about yourself that you’re not in a pit of despair.
I also noticed is that when you really stop trying, that’s when things tend to happen. Like you have to consciously stop trying. People can smell the desperation and effort a mile away. Confidence is sexy because it comes off as effortless.

Yes and in Nassau county NY, they’ve now made it ILLEGAL to wear a mask unless you can prove to a cop you’re doing it cause you’re sick.
Deadass.
Apparently the law exists because “bad actors” were protesting certain policies while “undercover” in a mask. This law was designed to “protect citizens and law enforcement from people hiding their identities to commit crimes.”

Actually that did happen at the same time now that you mention it. I managed to catch it quick though. It did happen shortly after midnight. Luckily I’m a night owl and was awake.

I am currently using the iOS password manager. I have my qualms with it but it’s been mostly pretty solid. I was an android user for years and used a fair share of password managers, I like the iOS one the best but I know some of the new managers are much better. I don’t know any other iOS compatible password managers. I’m open to suggestions.
Also every account that uses 2FA has either an Authenticator code or email to an authentication secured email address.

I viewed the recent activity in my account. I did not receive any notifications of failed logins in the last 8 weeks its been going on. I assume because I use 2FA and the password is just wrong it doesn't bother cause of the frequency it happens.
I received a notification last night that someone changed my shipping address on Macys.com and when I visited the website, there was an open order for a PS5 with delivery to a NJ address. After logging into Macy's I got 43 emails at once to seven different services like "Excalidraw" and "Sportograf" trying to login using a magic link. At this point was was pretty nervous so I checked my main email security. Sure enough, there have been repeated login attempts under my account going on every few minutes for weeks. ![](https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/42eb0357-6f35-431b-88ff-a3fd3159c9b5.jpeg) I also saw there was an attempted login to my cellphone or home internet company. I use 2FA, authenticators, etc. Basically what else should I be doing? Is there any way to be more preventative? I really don't wanna chuck this email but it is possible that may be the safest recourse. I do use this email for almost 300 different accounts to various things though. 8/23 update So I received this suspicious email as a “note to self” from Microsoft in my junk folder. It says it’s from my address but additionally says it’s an “unverified server.” I am leery of it being legit but it is oddly timed. I’ve added the opening text of the email: “Hello pervert, I've sent this message from your Microsoft account. I want to inform you about a very bad situation for you. However, you can benefit from it, if you will act wisely. Have you heard of Pegasus? This is a spyware program that installs on computers and smartphones and allows hackers to monitor the activity of device owners. It provides access to your webcam, messengers, emails, call records, etc. It works well on Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. I guess, you already figured out where I'm getting at.” I’ve received these emails in the past and nothing, but I figure it bears mentioning here cause I was legitimately in a less than secure situation a few days ago.

I have Sonos and it is meh. They just issued an apology in the app for how bad their app got, so I can’t really recommend it.
I keep seeing good reviews about Audio Pro. I don’t know too much about them, but they seem to have the same idea of multi-room audio.
Self hosting is the big caveat. There’s a lot of great software options, but the hardware can get to be a bit limiting if you don’t wanna play with common protocols like AirPlay or Chromecast.
Additionally, you could do a Denon or Marantz receiver or Soundbar with multi zone and cover at least 2 spaces wired and add wireless zones via their Heos protocol.
There’s also HomePod, Alexa, or even Bluetooth speakers like the UE Boom or JBL series that you can daisy chain Bluetooth speakers together. No real soundbar solution with this option. Ironically JBL Soundbars don’t communicate with their Bluetoo speakers.
Audio Engine makes some fine speakers that support WiFi or Bluetooth and all they need is power.
Kef has the incredible but pricey LS series of bookshelf and tower speakers. They are independently powered and support all kinds of wireless protocols including AirPlay.
There are a ton of audio solutions nowadays but a lot of them will still require either a wire somewhere or playing with standardized protocols.
I too wish there were a more “self hosted” options. It seems like sooner or later some more viable options will come to light though.

Forums felt like a real community. Even crummy little forums like my home forum Supercars.net were teeming with life.
Discovering websites that had highly specific purposes.
Going down the rabbit hole of knowledge of a niche topic on websites alone. Now Wikipedia has most of the information about something in one page. Because information could be so fragmented then, you could spend hours just learning about a topic through people’s personal websites and forum posts.
The old internet still felt very hobbled together by people and their simple efforts. The new internet feels very big corporate. Lemmy kinda feels like a slice of the old internet sometimes.

Marshmallows on regular pizza. Salty and sweet is so nice.
I used up play a ton of Doom mods years ago and a lot of the TCs were fun but lacked substance beyond the surface. Some of the new ones are cool but overly complex. (The Sonic cart game has an hour long tutorial before you start). I was a big fan of Simon’s Destiny, the Castlevania mod for Doom. Basically I’m looking to see suggestions for free games or total conversions that are worth playing. Before I go spending money onSteam releases, I wanna check out what I might have missed the last few years.

Still my favorite album ever. Nothing will ever sound quite like this. There’s an intensity I don’t think will ever be matched either. There are plenty of heavier, and louder, and crazier albums, but none will ever match Devin Townsend‘s surgical precision.

I have found enthusiast forums and believe it or not YouTube videos to be helpful.
Now with YouTube reviews, you gotta be a bit discerning. Try to follow personalities who have a lot of experience reviewing or have pretty stringent review measures. For example:
For any kind of home entertainment information I usually go to Chris Majestic and anyone he works with because he has pretty helpful measurements of how he qualifies products features.
Reddit has become a wasteland. It’s getting more difficult to find human content on the internet.

That said, laser is fine for most people.

I'm enjoying Lemmy as a content feed. As an interactive board though not as much. Finding things and rembering where content is can be confusing. Its definitely not as easy or user friendly as other sites/apps. Getting IRL friends to join feels like an impossible task unless they're pretty interested in tech.
That said you get what you give and if we want to see more content, we should all interact more.

I do love my Steam Deck. It has changed the way I play games. Its hackability had only added to its charm.
When I was kid, I could sit in front of TV for hours and sink a day or two away into a game and have no problem having to start the game over from the beginning. Time meant nothing to me and I wasted it like it was a near infinite resource. Now I am a parent and ain't got time for some of the nonsense that's in games nowadays. I'm lucky if I have even an hour to play each night. A good example: Forza Horizon 5 allows you to switch cars mid game without traveling back to a house. That to me is a huge time saver compared to the recent NFS games. Contrarily, Forza Motorsport (2023) makes you do qualifications every round. While realistic, a big time sink. That said, what are some of your favorite games that have respect for your limited time?

What's sad is that t one of the next great leaps in technology could have been something interesting and profound. Unfortunately, capitalism gonna capitalize and companies we're so thirsty to make a buck off it that we didn't do anything to properly and carefully roll out or next great leap.
Money really ruins everything.

I'm coming across this post after reading an article about how Netflix is bathing in money and now making their options worse for customers, how the most wheel of a Boeing 757 fell off, and a how a country has been so free of criticism for decades that they're able to commit genocide for over 3 months.
I'm having a hard time seeing hope in our future. Every company operates solely to extract as much profit as humanly possible (and not as Artificialally Intelligently as possible) without considering for a single moment how a decision they make may effect their relationship with customers or the quality of their product. I know companies are in it to make money, but they used to at least correct decisions in the face of public outcry. (Hell Microsoft did an about face on Xbox One features in 2013 after public outcry)
But things seem different now. Since the pandemic and the overall regard for human life went up, companies almost feel vindictive and emboldened to do even more to fuck customers over. Its almost like they're holding a grudge over consumers for considering anything in life over their spending habits from March 2020 - September 2021. After all, the biggest push to "return to normal" was to get the economy back on track. I'll never forget some asshole on a fox news segment saying "We gotta return to normal people. Yes some people will die, but grandma would sacrifice herself for the economy." That's when I lost all hope of things getting better.
We've had the chance many times to change the way we act as a species and potentially make the world better, but somehow we always fail to do so. We're just fucked.

This used to be true, but unfortunately, like USB-C the game has changed completely.
The downside to standardization is that if you keep the same physical form for multiple iterations, the internals can change. The specs of the source and receiving ends have gone through tons of changes since 2015 and old HDMI 1.4 Cables don't have the same standards to transmit high speed signals from things like PS5, Xbox, Apple TV etc.
Additionally because they require programming and HDCP (a verification handshake between the 2 devices it connects) when companies cheap out they may not properly program them.
That being said, you don't need spend an arm and a leg, but don't get shit either. Generally speaking, buy the cheapest version HDMI 2.1 from a reputable brand or vendor. Definitely not from Amazon anymore, a TON of products labeled 2.1 are actually 2.0 or worse, 1.4.

Man, capitalists will do literally anything to not pay people more money. You know people steal cause shit is expensive and they don't have a lot of disposable income to waste on stuff right? Why inconvenience everyone. Pay people more and hire more workers.
Also cause the propaganda to get people to "want" stuff is so effective they start stealing just to have it.
