I'm hostile towards telemetry by default because of how much spyware there is in today's technology. I'll only allow it if it's reasonable ( e.g. a GPS getting your location, system diagnostics for software devs ) and it's consentual.

I plan on eventually boycotting English as much as I can. Both because of what global English represents, and to counteract the massive international pressure to do everything in English and its consequences.

In my experience, most Windows-exclusive games work just fine under Wine. It's not that big a deal.

This thread isn't even about Windows games per se, but about a few games whose anti-cheats are screwing over Linux users.

Not sure why there are so many downvotes. Are there really that many people in here of all places who think gaming is just triple-A games from companies that don't respect their players and nothing else?

Windows is where it is because of Microsoft's aggression. There's no essence inside Windows that makes it widespread ex nihilo.

Linux isn't as widespread as it could be because many people don't realise it's a viable alternative to Windows or Mac. It has nothing to do with how many distros there are. Also, newbies are usually recommended Ubuntu or Linux Mint, so it's not even "so many choices" to begin with.

Also, you do realise you can interact with instances other than yours, right? I use lemm.ee btw.

Distinguishing dentals and palatals in the Latin alphabet https://lemm.ee/pictrs/image/43856104-e0f1-491a-bead-bba65b1a97f1.webp

I'm indecisive about how to best distinguish dental and palatal phones in my WIP Indo-European cloŋ in the script of the Romans. The full consonant inventory and their current orthographic values are in the image above. Some options I'm considering: * t̪ c d̪ ɟ θ ç n̪ ɲ - The phonemes in question. * t tc d dg s sj n gn - Their current assignments. * t tj d dj s sj n nj - All Js. Looks nice and intuitive, but a bit monotonous. * t ć d ǵ s ś n ń - The choice of diacritics is another matter. Looks clean, but they might fall victim to English speakers treating them as meaningless decorations. * p t b d f s m n - Quasi-etymological. Looks okay, and makes it easier to spot cognates, but misleading and unintuitive. Edit: I have no idea how to get tables working in Lemmy, so for now I've replaced the table with a screenshot from the Reddit thread.

  • Clipper152 Clipper152 1 year ago 100%

It helps to remember that the mind is not a truth machine, but a survival machine.

I recommend learning some psychology. The more you know about how the mind works, the easier it is to understand and spot logical fallacies, both in yourself and others.

Edit: also, you should practice those critical thinking skills instead of just keeping them in theory. You could apply them to past situations, for example.

I think the only reason Windows users are afraid of terminals is that they're not used to them. They're not that bad. Most terminal programs have a -(-)help command that shows you what you can do as well, in case you get stuck.
