The group that successfully sued Harvard to end affirmative action in university admissions last year is now threatening to investigate whether schools are complying with the new rules and to file lawsuits if it believes that they are not. The group, Students for Fair Admissions, has focused on three universities — Princeton, Yale and Duke — where [there were notable declines in Asian American enrollment](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/13/us/affirmative-action-ban-campus-diversity.html) this year compared with the last year, which the group said defied expectations. On Tuesday, Students for Fair Admissions sent letters to the schools questioning whether they were complying with the rules laid out by the Supreme Court. Princeton, Duke and Yale also saw minor differences in Black and Hispanic enrollment in the first class of students admitted since the court struck down race-conscious admissions.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A longtime CIA officer who drugged, photographed and sexually assaulted more than two dozen women in postings around the world was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison Wednesday after an emotional hearing in which victims described being deceived by a man who appeared kind, educated and part of an agency “that is supposed to protect the world from evil.” [Brian Jeffrey Raymond](https://apnews.com/article/cia-sexual-harassment-abuse-spying-b13751329992a21c29fa34cbbf6889f2), with a graying beard and orange prison jumpsuit, sat dejectedly as he heard his punishment for one of the most egregious misconduct cases in the CIA’s history. It was chronicled in his own library of more than 500 images that showed him in some cases straddling and groping his nude, unconscious victims. “It’s safe to say he’s a sexual predator,” U.S. Senior Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said in imposing the full sentence prosecutors had requested. “You are going to have a period of time to think about this.”
Eli Collins, a vice president of product management at [Google DeepMind](https://www.wired.com/tag/deepmind/), first demoed generative AI video tools for the company’s board of directors back in 2022. Despite the model’s slow speed, pricey cost to operate, and sometimes off-kilter outputs, he says it was an eye-opening moment for them to see fresh video clips generated from a random prompt. Now, just a few years later, Google has [announced plans](https://blog.google/products/youtube/made-on-youtube-2024/) for a tool inside of the YouTube app that will allow anyone to generate AI video clips, using [the company’s Veo model](https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/05/google-unveils-veo-a-high-definition-ai-video-generator-that-may-rival-sora/), and directly post them as part of [YouTube Shorts](https://www.wired.com/story/youtube-shorts-challenges-tiktok-with-music-making-ai-for-creators/). “Looking forward to 2025, we're going to let users create stand-alone video clips and shorts,” says Sarah Ali, a senior director of product management at YouTube. “They're going to be able to generate six-second videos from an open text prompt.” Ali says the update could help creators hunting for footage to fill out a video or trying to envision something fantastical. She is adamant that the Veo AI tool is not meant to [replace creativity](https://www.wired.com/story/picture-limitless-creativity-ai-image-generators/), but augment it.
Snapchat is reserving the right to put its users’ faces in ads, according to terms of service related to its “My Selfie” tool (formerly “AI Selfies”), which allows users and their friends to create AI-generated images trained on their selfies. Users have the option to opt out of this by toggling off a “feature” in the app called “See My Selfie in Ads,” but according to 404 Media’s testing this feature is on by default.

California Gov. A new law, set to take effect immediately, makes it illegal to create and publish deepfakes related to elections 120 days before Election Day and 60 days thereafter. It also allows courts to stop distribution of the materials and impose civil penalties. “Safeguarding the integrity of elections is essential to democracy, and it’s critical that we ensure AI is not deployed to undermine the public’s trust through disinformation -– especially in today’s fraught political climate,” Newsom said in a statement. “These measures will help to combat the harmful use of deepfakes in political ads and other content, one of several areas in which the state is being proactive to foster transparent and trustworthy AI.”

The first thing people saw when they searched Google for the artist Hieronymus Bosch was an AI-generated version of his *Garden of Earthly Delights*, one of the most famous paintings in art history. Depending on what they are searching for, Google Search sometimes serves users a series of images above the list of links they usually see in results. As first spotted by a user on [*Twitter*](https://x.com/ItsTheTalia/status/1835092917418889710?ref=404media.co), when people searched for “Hieronymus Bosch” on Google, it included a couple of images from the real painting, but the first and largest image they saw was an AI-generated version of it.
New York City on Tuesday reached a $175,000 settlement with a Staten Island police officer who said he had been a victim of retaliation for giving traffic tickets to people with connections to the upper echelons of the Police Department. [The officer, Mathew Bianchi, filed a lawsuit against the city last May](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/16/nyregion/mathew-bianchi-nypd-traffic-tickets.html). The suit said that he had been transferred out of his precinct’s traffic unit after Jeffrey Maddrey, then the chief of patrol and now the department’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, asked that he be punished. Officer Bianchi had issued a ticket to a woman with whom Chief Maddrey was said to be friends, according to the suit. “This settlement is a vindication for our client, allowing him to close this chapter and continue his service with the N.Y.P.D.,” John Scola, Officer Bianchi’s lawyer, said on Tuesday. “We hope that Officer Bianchi’s courage and this decisive outcome will inspire other officers to come forward as whistle-blowers.”

Long before his bleak final years, when he struggled with mental illness and lived mostly on the streets, Victor Carl Honey joined the Army, serving honorably for nearly a decade. And so, when his heart gave out and he died alone 30 years later, he was entitled to a burial with military honors. Instead, without his consent or his family’s knowledge, the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office gave his body to a state medical school, where it was frozen, cut into pieces and leased out across the country. A Swedish medical device maker [paid $341](https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25112182-gentinge-invoice) for access to Honey’s severed right leg to train clinicians to harvest veins using its surgical tool. A medical education company [spent $900](https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25112281-victor-honey-nbl-invoice) to send his torso to Pittsburgh so trainees could practice implanting a spine stimulator. And the U.S. Army [paid $210](https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25112312-victor-honey-army-invoice#document/p7/a2586369) to use a pair of bones from his skull to educate military medical personnel at a hospital near San Antonio. In the name of scientific advancement, clinical education and fiscal expediency, the bodies of the destitute in the Dallas-Fort Worth region have been routinely collected from hospital beds, nursing homes and homeless encampments and used for training or research without their consent — and often without the approval of any survivors, an NBC News investigation found.

SAO PAULO (AP) — A Brazilian Supreme Court justice on Friday seized about $3 million from bank accounts belonging to social media platform X and satellite-based internet service provider Starlink, both companies controlled by [tech billionaire Elon Musk](https://apnews.com/hub/elon-musk). The bank accounts of the two companies have since been unfrozen. Legal analysts have questioned de Moraes’ prior decision to freeze Starlink’s bank account to pay for cases related to X. While Musk owns both X and SpaceX, which operates Starlink, the two companies are separate entities.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —The woman behind an early Facebook post spreading a harmful and baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating local pets that helped thrust a small Ohio city into the national spotlight says she had no firsthand knowledge of any such incident and is now filled with regret and fear as a result of the ensuing fallout. “It just exploded into something I didn’t mean to happen,” Erika Lee, a Springfield resident, told NBC News on Friday. Lee recently posted on Facebook about a neighbor’s cat that went missing, adding that the neighbor told Lee she thought the cat was the victim of an attack by her Haitian neighbors.
McEntee's videos always feature the Project 2025 chief of HR sitting down at a table in a restaurant eating while making pithy racist and offensive observations, typically about gender ideology and diversity equity and inclusion, that Trump supporters can't help but enthusiastically devour. In his latest viral take, McEntee poses a question about abortion access in red states that came up during Tuesday night's presidential debate. "Can someone track down the women Kamala Harris says are bleeding out in parking lots because Roe v. Wade was overturned?" he asks. "Don't hold your breath." McEntee asked, and women answered. A Coney Island bar owner said he was told his problems with the NYPD could be resolved if he hired and paid the police commissioner’s brother. The bar owner alleged it was a worker in the mayor’s office who allegedly tried to help arrange the deal. “I felt it was like I got an ultimatum. It’s like either you gonna get with this - or you gonna get shut down,” bar owner Shamel Kelly told NBC New York. Shamel Kelly said it was associate director Ray Martin of the mayor's Office of Entertainment and Nightlife who first told him he could pay the police commissioner's brother to help get better treatment from the NYPD.
The Springfield City School District closed one middle school and evacuated two elementary schools Friday morning, according to school officials. Perrin Woods and Snowhill Elementary students were evacuated from their buildings to a different district location after receiving information from the Springfield Police Division, school district officials said. The district is in the process of a controlled release to dismiss students to their parents. Roosevelt Middle School also closed today before the beginning of the school day in relation to unspecified information the district received from the police division. Some parents who were arriving at Roosevelt with their students were turned away, according to reports.
California firefighters had to douse a flaming battery in a Tesla Semi with about 50,000 gallons (190,000 liters) of water to extinguish flames after a crash, the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday. In addition to the huge amount of water, firefighters used an aircraft to drop fire *removed*ant on the “immediate area” of the electric truck as a precautionary measure, the agency said in a preliminary report. Firefighters said previously that the battery reached temperatures of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (540 Celsius) while it was in flames. The [NTSB sent investigators](https://apnews.com/article/tesla-semi-fire-ntsb-investigation-battery-00f0d86ed17ee03ab169df6e7ee66c4d) to the Aug. 19 crash along Interstate 80 near Emigrant Gap, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) northeast of Sacramento. The agency said it would look into fire risks posed by the truck’s large lithium-ion battery.

It came out much later here than it did in the US, and you still can’t buy it directly from Valve - you have to go through an authorized third party. But I have seen the Asus ROG Ally in electronic stores. I’ve only seen the Steam Deck at one place, and I think that store has an arrangement to sell it exclusively. I haven’t been out looking in a few months, though.
A school district in northeast Florida must put back in libraries three dozen books as part of a settlement reached Thursday with students and parents who sued over what they said was an unlawful decision to limit access to dozens of titles containing LGBTQ+ content. Under the agreement the School Board of Nassau County must restore access to three dozen titles including “And Tango Makes Three,” a children’s picture book based on a true story about two male penguins that raised a chick together at New York’s Central Park Zoo. Authors Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson were plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the district, which is about 35 miles (about 60 kilometers) northeast of Jacksonville along the Georgia border. The suit was one of several challenges to book bans since state lawmakers last year passed, and Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law, legislation making it easier to challenge educational materials that opponents consider pornographic and obscene. Last month six major publishers and several well-known authors filed a federal lawsuit in Orlando arguing that some provisions of the law violate the First Amendment rights of publishers, authors and students.
“You can buy a gaming PC for 120,000 yen.” Japanese people have been seeing an increasing number of advertisements worded this way in the past few days. But what else costs 120,000 yen? A PlayStation 5 Pro, as recently revealed by Sony. The announcement of the PS5 Pro’s steep price tag has caused significant dissatisfaction both in the US and Europe, where the console will set gamers back $700 and €800 respectively. But much like European gamers, Japanese players are faced with paying even more for the console than people in the US. The 119,980-yen price point is equivalent to over $840, based on recent conversion rates. To make matters worse, Sony recently hiked the price of standard PS5 console models in Japan. On September 2, the suggested retail price jumped from 66,980 yen (about $463) to 79,980 yen (about $552). Apart from severe backlash across social media, this decision caused the console to sell out all over the country in the days leading up to the price increase and even gave the Xbox a boost in sales.

The morning after former President Donald Trump repeated racist claims about Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, some Haitian families are keeping their children home from school for their safety, according to an area activist. Those who allowed their children did so, but with heavy hearts. “She [my niece] was scared, but I told her to go, that God would protect,” said one Haitian resident, who asked that she not be identified publicly for fear of reprisal. “We’re all victims this morning,” said the woman, who moved to Springfield six years ago. “They’re attacking us in every way.” Aside from the anxiety caused by Tuesday night’s debate, the woman also said her cars have been vandalized twice in the middle of the night. She woke up one morning to broken windows and another to acid thrown on the vehicle. She’s added cameras to her driveway and tried to report the incidents to the police to no avail.

The New York Police Department has tossed out hundreds of civilian complaints about police misconduct this year without looking at the evidence. The cases were fully investigated and substantiated by the city’s police oversight agency, the Civilian Complaint Review Board, and sent to the NYPD for disciplinary action. They included officers wrongfully searching vehicles and homes, as well as using excessive force against New Yorkers. In one instance, an officer punched a man in the groin, the oversight agency found. In another, an officer unjustifiably tackled a young man, and then another officer wrongly stopped and searched him, according to the CCRB. The incident involving the young man was one of dozens of stop-and-frisk complaints the NYPD dismissed without review this year — a significant development given that the department is still under federal monitoring that a court imposed more than a decade ago over the controversial tactic.

They take it one step further. They make it seem that our wonderful Aiden appreciates your hate, that we should follow their hate.”

The greedy price hikes were why I had decided not to get a PS5 in the first place, and this price took me right back to that.
The wife of a California inmate will receive $5.6 million after being sexually violated during a strip search when she tried to visit her husband in prison, her attorneys said Monday. After traveling four hours to see her husband at a correctional facility in Tehachapi, California, on Sept. 6, 2019, Christina Cardenas was subject to a strip search by prison officials, drug and pregnancy tests, X-ray and CT scans at a hospital, and another strip search by a male doctor who sexually violated her, a lawsuit said. "My motivation in pursuing this lawsuit was to ensure that others do not have to endure the same egregious offenses that I experienced," Cardenas said.

Seeing all the clips of Astro Bot was making me really want a PS5, despite the big price hike we got just last week where I am, then I saw this price and my desire for any PS5 curled up and died again.
Ex-[Sony Computer Entertainment Europe](https://www.eurogamer.net/companies/scee) president Chris Deering does not believe recent layoffs across the games industry have been a result of corporate greed. Instead, workers who have lost their jobs should "drive an Uber" or "go to the beach for a year" until employment settles. Deering was a guest on games writer [Simon Parkin's podcast My Perfect Console](https://www.patreon.com/myperfectconsole), where the pair discussed games industry layoffs. "I don't think it's fair to say that the resulting layoffs have been greed," said Deering. "I always tried to minimise the speed with which we added staff because I always knew there would be a cycle and I didn't want to end up having the same problems that Sony did in Electronics."

I’m replacing my phone soon, and I’ve anyway decided that when I get a new phone, I’m not installing that cursed app on it. That’s how I’m finally going to cut myself off from it and be done.
The former boyfriend of Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who killed her by setting her on fire, has himself died from burns sustained in the attack, a Kenyan hospital official has said. Dickson Ndiema ambushed the marathon runner as she returned home from church more than a week ago, before dousing her with petrol and setting her ablaze. Local administrators said the two had been in conflict over a small piece of land in north-west Kenya, where Cheptegei lived and trained. Ndiema died on Monday night at the intensive care unit where he had been admitted with more than 30% burns on his body.
Prominent conservatives are blaming recent immigration from Haiti after a woman in Ohio was arrested for allegedly eating a cat. The only problem? The woman has lived in America for the past six years. The allegations arose over the weekend after right-wing users on social media discovered that a 27-year-old woman was charged last month with injuring animals, prohibitions concerning companion animals, and disorderly conduct. The woman, Canton resident Allexis Telia Ferrell, reportedly “stomped on the cat’s head to kill the animal before eating it in a residential area in front of multiple people” on Aug. 16, according to [Fox News](https://www.foxnews.com/us/ohio-woman-facing-charges-after-allegedly-killing-cat-eating-it-front-witnesses).

For anyone wondering about Georgia’s gun control laws:
-No background checks
-No purchase permit laws
-K-12 teachers are allowed to carry
-No red flag laws
-No bans on high capacity magazines
-No secured gun storage required
-Open carry / no concealed carry permit required
-No ghost gun regulations
-People with assault or violent misdemeanors can carry guns
-Colleges and universities must allow guns on campus
-Minors can possess rifles and shotguns
But Brian Kemp is urging all Georgians to pray for the safety of those in the classroom!!

Why on earth would they put cameras in locker rooms?! That vague “safety and security” Is not going to cut it as an acceptable reason.
This wouldn’t fly as a reason to put cameras in women’s locker room, and it shouldn’t fly as a reason to put on in men’s, either.

The thing is, selling off the amount of Tesla stock that he’d need to to pay off the debt would cause Tesla stock to plummet, leaving him significantly less wealthy and putting Tesla in danger. So even though he technically has the money to pay them, he functionally doesn’t.

The S not only hobbled Xbox; it’s risking hobbling the entire generation. The only thing that’s honestly saved that from happening is that the Xbox isn’t doing well this generation, so devs can decide to put off releasing on Xbox until they can finagle it to work, or just not bother. Instead of insisting on parity, they should have said games would run but might not have all the features, and said the X was the full premium experience.

“GLHF has confirmed that the “Do’s & Don’ts” document was sent to Reinier and at least one other content creator by Hero Games, a developer and publisher that co-published Black Myth: Wukong according to a LinkedIn post from the company. Hero Games is also a major shareholder in developer GameScience, and as of a 2021 press release was the largest external shareholder of the company.
Reinier sent GLHF a copy of the email sent to content creators and we can confirm that it was sent from a company email address associated with Hero Games. The email signature also contained a Discord username, and the account associated with the sender is listed as a Hero Games employee on their profile in the official Black Myth: Wukong Discord server.”

You’ve highlighted what is definitely a major problem with the Fediverse - all it takes for you to lose all the hard work you’ve done building up a community is the person running a server to pull the plug with no warning.
I loved kbin social - I started out on there, and only moved over to lemmy because it was getting too erratic and it was impossible to find out what was going on. Being able to move is a great thing, but if you miss your window to move, you’re SOL.
Admins definitely need to be willing and able to have the reins over to someone else if it’s getting to be too much, or to at least let people know in advance if they’re planning to shut down. Communication is key.

No voice actors, no writers…the future you’re envisioning for gaming completely sucks.
Stopthatgirl7 2 months ago • 75%
I'm not talking about what is currently available. I'm talking about the future in gaming.
So am I. Where are the future voice actors who wolud voice the major roles going to come from if the jobs they depend on to start out and get their foot in the door/build up their resumes at the beginning of their careers are gone?
Stopthatgirl7 2 months ago • 90%
Aren’t those minor roles exactly how people get their start in voice acting and start building up their resumes? Actors have to have a place to get their start, too.
