Emoji Suggestion Thread

If you want to suggest an emoji, post the URL, an appropriate name and optionally keywords (for searching) and it might be added. Make sure that the image: - is uploaded on Lemmygrad - looks acceptable at the standard square emoji resolution (test by previewing `![](url "emoji")`, replacing `url` with the image URL) - has a transparent background (unless there *is* no background) don't post dozens of Hexbear emojis here (it takes a while to add them), just stick to your favourite ones

HOWTO Suppress Lemmygrad taglines in Firefox/Chrome/Edge

Requirements: [Violentmonkey](https://violentmonkey.github.io/) browser extension. Tampermonkey and Greasemonkey might work as well, but I haven’t & won’t test them. Note also that I haven’t & won’t test Chrome or Edge, either. ```javascript // ==UserScript== // @name lemmy-delete-tagline // @match https://lemmygrad.ml/ // @require https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@violentmonkey/dom@2 // ==/UserScript== VM.observe(document.body, () => { const node = document.querySelector('#tagline'); if (node) { node.remove(); return true; } }); ``` Edit to add: Maybe it needs some work: when I click on the homepage icon from another page, it fails to remove the tagline. I’m an old who doesn’t understand how [progressive web applications](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_web_app) work. Maybe I need to remove the `return true` and also tune how often the observer observes. Or maybe there’s some trigger I should hook it up to. Simply removing `return true` does seem to work, but I have no idea if it’s at the cost of any appreciable performance. Edit to add more: !companero@hexbear.net suggested that I just use a [uBlock Origin](https://ublockorigin.com/) filter. I tried it and it works. It’s as simple as: ```plaintext lemmygrad.ml###tagline ```

Request: Give us a sort by "Top Three Days"

I'm not on Lemmy daily, still I'd like to check it out two times a week, but there is currently not a proper way to search per X number of days, it's either one day or one week. Which is odd when you can search by three months, six months and nine months before you get to a year. While I'm happy these options are available, it would make sense to have one extra option between "one day" and "one week". I've stopped checking Reddit more than weekly, however I would still like to visit Lemmy more often, yet it's awkward when you miss a day and then have to sort by week.

PSA about reporting content from other instances

When you submit a report for a post or comment from another instance, it gets sent to us as well as that instance's admins and the relevant community mods. Unless the content is particularly heinous, we usually just mark the reports as resolved and leave the decisions to that instance's admins or that community's mods. E.g. if you visit other instances, you're likely going to find someone both-sidesing the genocide in Gaza out of ignorance, and I *personally* prefer (other admins might disagree) not to ban them for something they posted on another instance (again, unless it's particularly heinous, e.g. cheering for "Israel") since they may eventually come across Lemmygrad and learn something. Basically, just keep in mind that reporting content from another instance will usually be ignored by us, so it's typically only worth it if it's against the rules of that instance or community

Federation issues (bugs) with Hexbear?

I've noticed that when I try to view the literature community at hexbear.net via this account and my usual Lemmy client, it is missing almost all posts, but there are many posts I can see if I just open hexbear.net in a web browser. Any idea what is going on there? Sorry if this is a known issue and I'm just out of the loop :(

I can’t change any of my settings

I considered replacing my profile picture, so I went to my settings and tried to upload a new one. At first it looked like it was working, but when I refreshed the page after clicking ‘Save’, nothing happened. So I turned off my content blocking extensions, allowed Opera to permit trackers, advertisements, and protected content, and I retried to upload my profile picture. >{"data":{"error":"rate_limit_error"},"state":"success"} I decided to modify my browser to accept all cookies, and this time I tried browsing outside of private mode. >{"data":{"error":"rate_limit_error"},"state":"success"} At this point I thought ‘fuck it’, switched to Microsoft’s awful Edge browser, and tried to upload my picture from there. >{"data":{"error":"rate_limit_error"},"state":"success"} Piss, piss, PISS! **ETA**: I figured out what the problem is. The page didn’t want to save because the description had too many characters in it.

Lemmy Development Update 2023-09-22

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/5328302 > Some years ago we used to post weekly development updates to let the community know what we are working on. For some reason we stopped posting these updates, but now we want to continue giving you information every two weeks about the recent development progress. This should allow average users to keep up with development, without reading Github comments or knowing how to program. > > We've been working towards a `v0.19.0` release of Lemmy, which will include several breaking API changes. Once this is ready, we'll post the these changes in dev spaces, and give app developers several weeks to support the new changes. > > This week @nutomic finished implementing the [block instance feature for users](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3869). It allows users to block entire instances, so that all communities from those instances will be hidden on the frontpage. Posts or comments from users of blocked instances in other communities are unaffected. He also [reworked the 2-Factor-Authentication implementation](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3959), with a two-step process to enable 2FA which prevents locking yourself out. Additionally he is [reworking the API authentication](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3946) to be more ergonomic by using headers and cookies. Finally he is adding a feature for users to import/export community follows, [bocklists and profile settings](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3976). > > @dessalines is currently implementing a [redesign of the join-lemmy.org website](https://github.com/LemmyNet/joinlemmy-site/pull/243). These problems were introduced during a complex [rewrite of the federation queue](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3605) which was recently finished, and is thought to allow Lemmy federation to scale to the size of Reddit. > > @SleeplessOne1917 is implementing [remote follow functionality](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/pull/1875), which makes it easy to follow communities from your home instance while browsing other instances. A more stylized version of the sidebar

I just formated a little bit better in my opinion, added some bolds to certain parts, a bigger font to others, and that kind of stuff. Also keep in mind, in my opinion, the Lemmygrad flag should go below, not where the name of the instance is displayed, otherwise it looks ugly with the name and the image next to it, instead of being underneath it. The update seems to have broken that. This is how it looks. # **Lemmygrad** ![](https://lemmygrad.ml/pictrs/image/79ab2f62-5b6b-47fc-be4d-2809b9f6f01f.png?format=webp) *A collection of Marxist communities for memes, learning, news, discussion, media, or anything you like.* ##### **Rules** 1. No right-deviationists like patsocs, nazbols, strasserists, duginists, etc. ----- This is the text with the markdown parts: ``` # **Lemmygrad** ![](https://lemmygrad.ml/pictrs/image/79ab2f62-5b6b-47fc-be4d-2809b9f6f01f.png?format=webp) *A collection of Marxist communities for memes, learning, news, discussion, media, or anything you like.* ##### **Rules** 1. [FIXED] I can't see the post saying that Lemmycraft was down

Edit: Fixed, thanks nemesis! I had to select the languages in my profile settings on firefox mobile, though it seems that isn't the only way to do it. This is the post: https://lemmygrad.ml/post/773089 If I open the link I can only see the title of the post. I can see that there are 11 comments but they don't show up. The only thing I can think of why that is is that the post was made with the English language option instead of Undetermined. But other people could see it and pinged me (otherwise I wouldn't have noticed that the post existed in the first place) Do I have misconfigured settings? I see that in profile settings there is a language selector thingy, but I can't figure out how it works.

Lengthy posts take forever to upload (because they won’t)

I have been trying repeatedly to add a handcrafted transcript to [the thread for this video](https://lemmygrad.ml/post/769209), but the ‘loading’ circle spins endlessly. It took me a while before I realized that a transcript of 23,364 characters exceeds the character limit, and therefore cannot be posted. If you really need to have a character limit, please let the user know what it is and explicitly warn them when a message is too long. Don’t just give them a circle that spins endlessly. That’s bad programming.

Which bots should be brought over from Reddit?

I have created a [reply bot](https://gitea.arsenm.dev/Arsen6331/lemmy-reply-bot) that I posted earlier. With it, I can create any bot that replies to users' comments with a set message. It can also get information from the comment and include it in the reply if needed. The reply bot I made is pretty advanced in terms of what it can detect because it uses PCRE2. For example, I can detect only things that start with something, or only things that have specific characters in specific locations and don't have other characters before or after. Does anyone know any bots on Reddit that they may want brought to Lemmygrad (other than parenti bot, that's already been brought over), or have any other ideas for bots that could be added?

Best way to post 8K photos on lemmygrad?

I'm going to be posting 8K photos taken with my phone using a macro/flat field/telephoto snap on lens of the motherboard and other things on here when I post my workstation project... I've tried posting 8K photos like of the kiddie pool pond I made for my frog babies. But I had to downsize to 6K for it to work. The mobo for example definitely has to be 8K for folks to see all the necessary little details and lettering on the board. Should I try to upload to IPFS or something and link here?

Implement light and dark theme by defautl

A while back I made a light and a dark theme for lemmygrad.ml. Unfortunately, due to [current code restrictions](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/694), a custom selected instance theme doesn't have a light and dark mode. As suggested by Nutomic, I would like to request that the new themes replace the litely and darkly files so that the red theme can default according to browser preferences. I recognize that this may be hacky and might need to be reapplied on code updates, but it seems like the best solutions. If needed (I don't think it is), the original litely and darkly themes can be renamed to litely-green and darkly-green to keep them available. Suggestion: Have admins commandeer this community and add a useful sidebar

Additionally, the admins should determine a policy for commandeering abandoned communities. I know some websites have a policy where if no staff log in in [x] weeks, any user is allowed to request moderation. Maybe I should make another post about that. This in particular is an excellent example. The only staff member, [@Eli@lemmygrad.ml](https://lemmygrad.ml/u/Eli), made this community, made (and deleted) two posts, and apparently hasn't done anything else for 3 years. This is an important community to the site and deserves attention. As it stands, the sidebar is useless. It could explain the difference between Lemmygrad and the Lemmy software, link to better communities for contacting the devs for feature requests, give advice for people asking questions, link to relevant chatrooms if any, that kind of stuff. This preventative assistance helps prevent the place getting filled with useless, redundant or off-topic questions.

Automatically filtering out the post from my home page that I've already voted/seen. I mean it's annoying to browse through the same post again and again to see the new post in home page. Apologies for lemmygrad being down some today, we're working on it.

We're currently under a DDOS attack, and are doing our best to fix it.

Logo size

Update 31 May: Recently, Chromium addressed an important scaling issue making this issue much less relevant. It would be great if four sizes (scaling factors) of the logo could be served. This way, the logo will look just as crisp across different displays. ```html <img alt="Logo" src="/pictrs/image/gB8yP0oFF5.png?format=webp&amp;thumbnail=64" srcset="/pictrs/image/gB8yP0oFF5.png?format=webp&amp;thumbnail=32 1x, /pictrs/image/gB8yP0oFF5.png?format=webp&amp;thumbnail=64 2x, /pictrs/image/gB8yP0oFF5.png?format=webp&amp;thumbnail=96 3x, /pictrs/image/gB8yP0oFF5.png?format=webp&amp;thumbnail=128 4x" width="32" height="32"> ```

Are there any plans to deal with gentrification (of Lemmygrad)?

I saw [this post](https://lemmy.ml/post/169093) and learned about [gentrification](https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentrification); now I wonder if there are any plans to deal with potential gentrification of Lemmygrad.
