DO NOT BUY A ONN 4k TV BOX (Walmart TV box)

https://xdaforums.com/t/guides-2023-walmart-onn-google-tv-4k-yoc.4610749/ It appears that the new devices have been silently changed by Google to no longer allow you to have the same functionality you did before. Boot loader unlocking is now impossible unless someone can find an exploit. Can I just say how much I like the default apps?

I especially like the Camera app as if feels very modern without all of the bloat. All the apps feel like they belong in modern Android. It is clear that lots of work has gone into the core apps.

Battery drain from media storage and external storage

Hello, as you can see in the following picture, I have some issue with an app, I think that media storage and external storage are used by some apps though I don't have any clue about which one, Does this happened to any of you ? For your information, my phone is a mi A1 that run on lineage OS nightly Tissot 20 : 20-20240605-NIGHTLY-tissot The problem happened before I made an update so it's probably not related I hope I do not break any rule from this community Have a nice day you all :) ![Screenshot_20240607-140847_GSam Battery Monitor](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/f6b66d52-7b13-4f30-a8b0-0bdbd769411d.jpeg)

what does "show assistant recommendations" mean?

If you go to setting>sound and vibration>media you see a setting called "Show assistant media recommendations" which is "based off of your activity". Because Assistant is capitalized, I assume it refers to google assistant. I have no gapps, so i dont have google assistant. anybody have ideas about this?

Why does lineageos have port 3283 netassistant open?

I've got a lineageos phone and I was just scanning my network to find my server and saw it had port 3283 open with the service netassistant. Apparently it's an apple remote desktop reporting thing, but I have barely got any apps installed. The apps I have are: - newpipe - osmand+ - neo store - kde connect I can rule out kde connect from this because it uses port 1714-1764. It is an official build with no Gapps.

Question about Messaging app in LineageOS

Hello. I note that previous versions of the LineageOS Messaging app had support for including emojis. This recent version does not include such an option. The keyboard choices are simply either letters or numbers. Is there a way to once again have this option in the LineageOS Messaging app? Note, I do not have Google Play Services installed. I rely solely on LineageOS along with some additional f-droid apps (and this is something I have always relied on since I began using LineageOS some years ago, starting with a Nexus 5 -- I now have a Google Pixel 4a running LineageOS 21). **solved**: Going to Settings/System/Keyboard allowed me to enable the emoji option.

No notifications from Signal/Whatsapp until I open the app

Has anyone else come across this? I'm running 21-20240419-NIGHTLY-panther and I don't get notifications until I open the app, at least in Signal and WhatsApp, and I suspect Gmail too. I already set the apps to unrestricted battery usage ([including the hard-to-find extra setting when you press to the left of the "Allow background usage" toggle](https://9to5google.com/2024/03/15/android-14-qpr2-app-battery-usage/) ) and I disabled the "Battery Manager" (which I could only find by searching in settings, there doesn't appear to be a button for it in the settings, separately...) Is there anything else I could try? I have a Pixel 7.

Anyone able to disable DeviceLockController app on LOS?

Hey ! On LOS 21, the app DeviceLockController is there, but it can't be stopped neither disable, at least from my side. There's another one I don't trust, Android System Intelligence, but I could stop it and disable it. Those two apps really are scary to be part of LOS. Is anyone aware of bugs on LOS about getting rid of them? How about DeviceLockController? A reasonable way to disable it without risking too much bricking the phone in the process? Thanks !

Currently Xiaomi 11 lite 5g NE is supported by the community and I would like to install the lineage OS on it. I would like to know (or where I can find this information) for how long my phone will receive updates or on average how long a phone stops being maintained once it starts being maintained. Note Application

Do we have a default application for Note? I know it sounds mundane, but we have calculator, sound recorder, music player, even web browser. It just seems a bit strange we don't have a basic plain-text note application. I usually use Markor. I have no complaint overall except that it would stick out like sore thumb on my front screen due to it not having the themed icon. Devs & fellow users, what do y'all think?

Customize icons & fonts?

I purchased a Pixel 7 for my wife specifically to install Lineage OS 21, replacing a Samsung Galaxy which hasn't received updates for years. She hates changing phones, but I sold her on a Pixel + Lineage so she can keep the phone as long as possible, still receiving OS updates. I'm super happy with the outcome, finding Lineage to be a huge win. However, my wife is extremely particular about customizing her interface, and finds Lineage (or maybe it's just the newer Android 14?) lacking the customization options she wants. She's coming from a much older Android version, possibly relying on a few Samsung-specific options. In particular, Lineage's Trebuchet launcher doesn't seem to let her group apps as folders in the app drawer (tray?) - only on the primary Home screen. When she swipes up, she gets an overload of apps all at once, and she wants to group those into folders the same way the Home screen allows. The Home screen itself she prefers to keep super clean. The config she likes was easy to setup her older Samsung running vendor-ROM Android, and she's super frustrated that she can't seem to get that under Lineage. Also, she absolutely hates the default app icons and font choices. I'm hoping to get a recommendation for a replacement Launcher, and/or add-on apps that allow her to customize these specific settings. F-Droid apps would be ideal, though paid GApps (ugh!) would still do in a pinch. I just want her to love her new phone, and without these options she never will. Thanks so much!

Can I skip updates?

I have LineageOS installed on my phone and it has almost weekly updates. Since the device is quite budget, I believe its memory can be damaged by such often updates so I'm not updating it for 2 months already. But there are security fixes and patches in newer versions so I do want to update. My question is: do I have to install every update one by one (there are like 8 of them lol) or can I just install the newest version? All of the updates are minor of course. There are no Android version jumps EDIT: I installed the latest version as everyone suggested and everything seems to be working fine. Thank you all for help

Where do old builds go? https://download.lineageos.org/devices/miatoll/builds

When I started using LineageOS on my Redmi Note 9 Pro, there were a couple of releases available, one was LOS 18.1 and the other one was LOS 19.1, but as time went, the los 18.1 downloads were gone and then the same happened to the 19.1 releases. Thankfully, I have the version that I want already downloaded in my machine, but if someone wanted to download now those prior versions... well, good luck it seems. Edit: yes, I know about archive.org, but can't download.lineageos.org provide access to prior versions somehow? Is it because of storage costs?

Is there a good starting guide to build LOS for an unsupported phone?

I have a realme 5 Pro. Honestly, the current state of officially and unofficially supported custom ROM for rmx1971 suck. PixelExperience was the last decent half-decent ROM for my device - it had some battery issues. DerpFest, crDroid and EvolutionX are all terrible for me - because I never wanted those "fancy" settings in the first place. Right now, I'm on DerpFest, and honestly, it's terrible. The desktop and wallpaper engine is broken, the theming is all over the place and some of the contents are out of the screen. Honestly, I want something that is as close to the stock ROM, is lightweight, and gives life to older devices. LOS seems to be a good ROM, at least from the YouTube videos I've seen. How should I go about creating a build for my device? And what should I care about while building? And how can I make my build official later on? What about the kernel? Can it be updated beyond the version that's it at right now?

No easy Network Location in LineageOS

Although GPS or hardware based location does work on LineageOS, it seems there is no easy way to get software based Network Location officially on LineageOS due to [UnifiedNLP](https://github.com/microg/UnifiedNlp) getting deprecated and merged to GMS Core. ([Also see this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/uw1uc7/how_to_properly_get_set_up_with_location_services/)) After discussing with community and my own research, there are 2 ways to get it on LineageOS- 1. Either get LineageOS for MicroG. Problem with that being it is not official. 2. Or get some older version of UnifiedNLP with [MinMicroG](https://github.com/FriendlyNeighborhoodShane/MinMicroG-abuse-CI/releases/tag/2023.05.16) (also an older version) or some other 3rd party installer. Both of these are complicated and [risky](https://www.ablison.com/pros-and-cons-of-flashing-a-phone/) (*as flashing can brick a phone*) processes for something that is software based and is only half part of location services as GPS still works, meaning imo, you aren't getting your effort's worth. Especially noobs. **This post is an upto date guide for future users** (as not many might get difference between GPS and Network Location) **while also inviting suggestions for older users on how they dealt with the problem.**

Call for donations: DivestOS (fork of LineageOS) https://divested.dev/pages/donate#fundraiser2024

>Happy New Year! DivestOS and the Divested projects as they currently stand are ultimately unsustainable. My goal for 2023 was to acquire a grant to continue my work, I was unsuccessful. Today I am announcing a fundraiser of raising $12,000 USD by end of February. It may be a stretch to ask, but I hope you all have found sufficient value in my work to keep these projects going. If it is unsuccessful I will switch to a full-time job and the Divested projects will take a backseat. To those who have donated, I truly appreciate your support. Thank you - Tavi.

How do push notifications work on Lineage?

I've heard and read recently about a warrant that shows that the US government is monitoring push notifications on iOS and Android. This is possible because push notifications mostly work remotely, using "push notification post office" servers at Apple and Google. I am aware that certain apps; such as Threema, Signal, Proton, Tuta, and others; use their own servers for push, but not all apps will do this. So, as a deGoogled operating system, how exactly does LineageOS handle push notifications?

android system intelligence app coming with lineageos on pixel 4a 5g

I just noticed there's an app installed on a recently acquired pixel 4a 5g, "android system intelligence", which I never found installed on other phones like moto or xiaomi ones. It also had by default a bunch of permissions granted, which I removes, and only left it with notifications. Is this a system app I should leave working with more permissions? Should I disable it instead (if possible, I didn't try)? Is it required for an android system proper functionality? Is it bad to remove all permissions except by the notifications one? Does this damage functionality? I'm just suspecting about an "android intelligence" thing. What have others done about it?

Upgrades on pixel 4a 5g (bramble)

Hi ! I recently got a pixel 4a 5g (bramble), and when [installing](https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/bramble/install), I noticed there's a difference with respect other phones I've installed lineageos on, like [motorola](https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/kiev/install/variant2), xiomi redmi 4x (discontinued) and others. On this pixel, and probably others, one needs to flash a boot.img, a dtbo.img and a vendor_boot.img, before sideloading lineageos. The vendor_boot.img is supposed to be the equivalent to the recovery.img. On other phones there's only a recovery.img to flash, prior to sideloading lineageos. Now, on this pixel majore version [upgrades](https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/bramble/upgrade) I see documented only the sideload of lineageos. For other phones I usually upgrade both, the recovery.img and then sideload the new major version of lineage. So not sure if I should then should flash all images, boot, dtbo and vendor_boot, when upgrading on major versions. I guess I could, but I'm wondering. Moreover, even on same major OTA upgrades, I'm wondering what gets upgraded, if I have selected OTA upgrades to also upgrade recovery image, would it just upgrade the vendor_boot one, or would it flash all other images? It's just that it involves flashing several other images, not matching the ones for other phones, :) Thanks !

Backup phone apps and data with Seedvault (I think I've solved this) https://kb.above.im/backup-seedvault/

Okay, I have a Google Pixel 4a with LineageOS ([sunfish](https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/sunfish/)). I followed the instructions given at this [site](https://kb.above.im/backup-seedvault/), and created a Seedvault backup. I had my phone plugged into my laptop via USB, and transfer of files for USB was enabled; so, the laptop could access the phone's files via MTP. However, this was not seen as an option for where the backup was to be created (IE, it did not give the option to create the backup on the hard drive of the laptop via a file transfer with MTP). So, I created it on the phone. I have since copied that file to my laptop. Specifically, I copied the backup file which was created, that being *.SeedVaultAndroidBackup*, to my laptop. My laptop runs Debian Linux. So, a few questions: 1.) will I be able to restore from the backup file, *.SeedVaultAndroidBackup*, that exists on my laptop? Or will this not work, given that it wasn't originally created there? 2.) if the answer to (1.) is "yes", then will I be able to delete the backup that was made on my phone? 3.) is there a way to create a backup with Seedvault specifically on my laptop, rather than copying the created backup file afterword? I wonder if there was a setting with USB transfer (MTP) that could be adjusted (IE, making the laptop the focus rather than the phone).

How do LineageOS security updates work when the official updates from Google cease? https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4457705?hl=en#zippy=%2Cpixel-a-g-pixel-pixel-a-g-pixel-a-pixel-xl-pixel

I recently bought a Google Pixel 4a. The [link](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4457705?hl=en#zippy=%2Cpixel-a-g-pixel-pixel-a-g-pixel-a-pixel-xl-pixel) from the title outlines that security updates from Google will soon be ending for the Pixel 4a (though there was a surprise update in November, but no further updates are expected). Yet, in spite of that, I assume that LineageOS security updates will continue for this phone, since for a variety of other older phones they have continued. But, I wonder, how will this be achieved? Is there information on how LineageOS creates and releases security updates for the devices that it supports?
