Yes, link aggregation is one of the main feature of reddit. And I guess it's a main feature here as well. But another feature on both sites is also the text-post that can be used to promote discussion among users. But they are so few and far between they drown in all the post with links to new-site of less than good quality.

Of course there are webforums, but the one that are still active are usually single topic webforums. Like for example windows 10 forums, or a rc-helicopter/remote-drone forum. This place is a much better place to discuss a wide range of topics inside the correct community, anything from gardening, to politics, to power electronics. That's why I would enjoy a common place in the fediverse to meet people :)

I would like communities to be a better place for discussion.

Both here and on reddit communities/subreddits, especially big ones, is a difficult place to hold a discussion on the topic of that community. Take for example technology, I could enjoy to discuss anything from SR-IOV to maglev trains. But the technology subs are filled with business news of companies run by eccentric billionaires. Even when the news article is a somewhat interesting topic many "news" site are so filled with ads and autoplay videos I close them immediately. I would enjoy seeing what other people have on there their mind, and see it bring interesting discussions. Instead all these communities drown in posts of links to news site. And the comment-section on those type of post isn't the right place for a "philosophical" discussions that would otherwise be on topic for that sub/community, but exactly align with topic of that post or news article. Some old fashion webforum have a separate subforum-section dedicated to posting links to external sites, leaving that place open to actual discussion. Reddit have flairs, but few people use them. So still the problems remain that text post would drown in the hundreds of link posts, leaving the text-post empty. What are your thoughts on this? *I hope this isn't too much negativity from my part. I would only like to see something better than what we have now.*

m.2 nvme ssd on pcie expansion card.

Does anyone have any experience how well m.2 pcie expansion card work? With the current prices of nvme it's not that expensive get 4tb m.2 drives. Outright speed isn't the most important, so it not big deal if some pcie lanes have to be shared. My 'worry' is that when I upgrade my computer it might not recognize the m.2 adapter. That's why I'm thinking 4tb 2.5" sata SSDs are probably a safer option, like the Samsung QVO 4tb drive. I'm not running the OS on it, it's just for general data storage. For me this mean I can finally ditch the old 4tb WD drive I have and go pure SSD (I have a NAS for backup of course). I know I can get a 8tb and 10tb 3.5 drives for the same roughly the same price, but I'm not a datahoarder or anything so don't need that amount of storage. That's why the idea of going pure SSD in appealing. Just hoping to see some ideas thrown around, and see what you guys think.

You will get better framerate with a newer GPU, but if you already have playable FPS then you can wait with the upgrade. I don't see any point getting a better CPU for your motherboard unless you have many tasks you know are CPU limited for you. For games I'm sure there will be little difference. And getting a new cpu/motherboard/ram is basically building a new computer. It's better to wait a few more years.

I don't think we should strive to have as big a userbase as reddit.

Many of us have seen it happening in the last 4-5 years. reddit subs, and reddit in general has become a bit s***. Of course there are still good subs, especially the truly niche ones can often have a small helpful crowd. But with 100s of thousands of users, some sub drown in hate and negativity. I've been thinking about why. With the offical reddit app, reddit is as easy as facebook, many people even refer the the platform as an "app". Perhaps this ease of use attracts the wrong kind of people. This place is currently very far removed from this. You applied to get in, you chose this instance on the fediverse among a selection of other instances. Calling it a concern would overstating things, but I think maybe we shouldn't strive to become as ubiquitous as reddit has become. A couple of 100K users on this instance and maybe a couple of million spread across the fediverse is enough users. The 'gate' you have to go through to register actually makes this place so much better than reddit. What are your thought?

In cities or close by cities this is not a problem. I'm from norway, the country is big, but with few people. So the train or bus doesn't go where I need to go. Last week I was going to a place 25km away from my home. I was thinking of taking the bug but it would take 1h14m. with my car it is a little under 30minutes.

Then there taking stuff home. A few weeks ago I needed some planting soil for my garden. I only needed 3 bags with 40L of dirt. But imaging taking that on the train or the bus. People living a apartments in cities don't have this problem. But other people leed other lives.

For me there are many levels of 'special' cars. One level is the great cars through history, Mercedes SL300, Ferrari F40, Mclaren F1 and the likes. Another level is the engineering in cars like the koenigseggs gemera that go from 0-200kph faster than many cars do 0-100kph. The carbonfiber wheels are hand made. A Swede is handlaying layers of carbon fibers cloth, before adding resin and then curing process. The modern mclarens are also fascinating engineering wise.

The last level are cars that it's possible for me to own, right now I have a BMW. don't know what I'll get next. Some porches are nice, maybe my priorities change I'll just get a Polestar 2 or something. Anyways I like BMWs, maybe i'll get an old 3 series like an E92 to have as a summer car.

I think it's natural that reddit will be discussed a lot during the next few weeks. We might see a new spike around june 30th when the API get restricted (cost money). From then on it will slowly die down, I hope. As a topic it might never die completely. People still talk about digg, and true old timers bring up BBS's and such. Many of us, me included are reddit refuges, I think it's natural to help vent some frustration by discussing it with peers on this instance.

Yes, I don't wont it exactly like reddit. We are over 12k people here on this server so there are plenty of people so talk to to have a general discussion. The small issue is the more niche a hobbie/community is there more of a problem it. Instead of 100 Linux users on one server there is 10 people on 10 servers (just imaginary numbers to get my point across).

The point is to connect with people with similar interests. If one "sub" does go bad, we can just make a new one on a different instance.

I do agree that no one wants power-hungry mods ruining a sub.

I'm Norwegian and I love the fact it doesn't get properly dark, it can be so beautiful outside during the constant twilight. Also the fact the sun is up until 22:41 (as of 16.06.2023, I check the weather pages that list this.) This is one reason I don't want to change the daylight savings. Then we could rather stay on summer time, so we don't have to adjust all the clocks. But that's another discussion. If we were on winter time the sun would go down as early as 21.41 today :(

    Fragmentation around the Fediverse.

I'm a fairly new users, but I feel that navigating around the fediverse is a bit cumbersome, maybe the wrong word for it. But there is a lack of overview in a way. I enjoy being on this server, but I also like to follow other communities. Lots of different topics, everything from cars to Linux to architecture. Right now there are 10 (that I could find on browse.feddit.de) instances named Linux on different server. So the small number of Linux users using some fediverse instance is spread around over many servers. Coming from reddit, things were far from perfect over there, but there is only r/Linux. It's a shame users are spread so thin all over the place. I used Linux as an example, I've seen the same "problem" for other topics as well. Anyways, just my perspective as a new users. Hope this wasn't too much of a rant, maybe we can look at this as an issue where the fediverse can improve.

Yes, I'm having a perspective on this as a journey, it's fun to be along for the ride. Even though it's been around a couple of years things are not set in stone, and of course with the big influx of reddit users(me included there) there still ways to go. I'm still not sure how everything works. Anyways I'm exited to see what the future holds for the fediverse.

No, not really. Mars has a very weak magnetosphere, so you need shielding against radiation. Also there is no atmosphere and any atmosphere we put on mars will quickly (in a geological timescale) get blown away by the charged solar winds because there is no magnetic field. So it's an immense task, and probably a few hundred years out before we have the technology.

@hedge, you're asking if we should terraform Mars if we haven't already cleaned up this this planet. It's a good question but I don't see a problem here.

Let me borrow a quote from Isaac Arthur, youtuber and president of the National Space Society(in USA), and I'm paraphrasing him: If we have the technology to truly terraform Mars, then lot of that technology will already have been used to stabilize the climate on earth. It's by orders of magnitude easier to "fix" Earth, than make Mars habitable to humans without the need for Domes, or spacesuits to breathe outside.

So to continue the "cleanup" analogy, it's like cleaning up the worst nuclear disaster (Chernobyl ) vs cleaning a few drops of water off your kitchen floor.

I'm new to daily driving Linux. I've dabbled with Linux for years, but never used it that much until I installed it on a new m.2 drive on my main PC. Been using Arch for a little over 1 month now.

I can understand your tired of tinkering, I came from windows where I was tired of fighting the OS to do what I want. So in that regard I use the same "energy" but instead of fighting windows I'm learning and getting better and building and customizing my Linux install exactly how I like it.

As for other suggestions I don't mind macOS, but their hardware screams planned obsolescence. they charge obscene amounts for a few gigabytes extra of SSD. I checked just now and they charge 259euro in my country to go from 256GB to 512GB. And I bought 2TB Samsung 980 pro NVME m.2 drive for 120euro a month ago.

Windows is probably the worst OS, but you can install software that rips out all the built in spyware. And you get keys around the web for cheap. This way you can keep your PC, and the next time you get a new PC you can buy one you are reasonably certain will work well on Linux.

Discussions on Reddit was often exhausting and mentally draining. How can we make it less so on the fediverse?

A bit too often taking part in discussions on Reddit was just mentally draining. Initially the topic looks so promising and I would love to discuss it. But too often people were not interested in sharing ideas beyond their own opinion, and many people were obsessed with "winning" the discussion. Trying so discuss the finer points back and forth in a satisfying way was a rare occasion. Even In not so big subreddits you would think were filled with like minded people this was difficult. and comments were trying to end the discussion instead of coming with an idea and trying to further it. How can we all promote good discussion on this site or the wider fediverse?

I remember some years back on Reddit there a change to what the default subs were. Suddenly my reddit frontpage was full of /r/aww and a lot of incredibly low effort content. From then on it was necessary to show only subs I subscribe to. I like memes as much as the next person, but in moderation.

I'm not worried and don't see a big problem if there are some subreddits/communities with memes and low effort content.

In the discussion of size. I subbed to the classicalmusic sub. Right now there is an equivalent in the fediverse I think but it's quite dead. Just having one community for all types of music isn't really appealing. I don't want to go through 1000s of popmusic post to find two about classical. This example of mine with classicalmusic transfers well to other topic. I started using a distro of Linux on my computer and want to connect with others also using Linux. For all these niche interest size is important.

Then as for joining. I won't say it's complicated to sign up, but there is an extra hurdle in a way with how it's a lot to take in about how the fediverse is working. Many people will join, but it requires slightly more effort still than many other social places around the internet.
