I would be really surprised if anyone is cooling data centres with city water except in emergency, that's so unbelievably expensive (could see water direct from a lake though but that had it's own issues too). I recall saving millions just by adjusting a fill target on an evaporative cooling tower so it wouldn't overfill (levels were really cyclic, targets weren't tuned for them), and that was only a fraction of what it'd have cost if we'd've used pure city.

Something like this setup also takes getting used to but seriously worth it.

Totally fair, awareness is a big thing too, fire crews are professionals so I do think they made the best choice with what they were given, every firefighter I've met will absolutely do an assessment before doing anything.

Don't know their situation, were they just told vehicle fire not lithium fire? Maybe more lithium specific crews/equipment in the future, maybe battery compartments that can help contain? (As I said, with lithium batteries I've worked with in the past, pressure vessels, if they went off it was at least contained to inside that, they'd vent gasses still but at least the threat of fire was minimised)

There's already tools to deal with lithium fires, class D fire extinguishers, sand and vermiculite. When I worked heavily with lithium non-rechargables we had lithium disaster plans for fires, explicitly in that was alerting fire fighters that it's a combustible metal fire so they can react accordingly, those fires need to be smothered afaik, water was a big no no.

Generally though, the plan was, escape and enforce a quarantine zone because primary cells give off nasty stuff, if you can drop it in a bucket of vermiculite if it's out of the containment vessels and pretty much let them do their thing. Then once it seems like it's done, wait more time to make sure it's actually safe with 30 minute gas tests, then package them for safe transport.

I've seen it mentioned that ryzen is more memory speed sensitive, seen Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 X 8GB) DDR4 3600 MHz CL16 kit for £35 on UK amazon, see a 32 GB kit for £60 for 3600, £52 for 3200. 32 is super overkill for most people still (shit I recall when 16GB was considered overkill), but it's cheap enough that it's harder to say it's a waste imo.

Side note, GOW is what sold me on hdr and was the game that got me to upgrade from a 780ti and 3rd gen i5, literally couldn't even run the game.

My region breaks it down per property 100k of property value, could get actual numbers but as a % looks like 36.5% for police services for the whole region. Looks like total tax levy is $483 million for the region.

Parks and conservation 1.3%, public health 9.9%, community support 18.1%, transit 7.3%

Actually looking into it, those numbers aren't accurate reflections of total budgets, total budget is closer to a $1 billion with provincial/federal funding and wastewater charges, policing looks to actually make up ~22% of that total, community services ~46% ~14% public health, parks 0.7%, housing ~3.7%, transit ~8.4%.

Gotta say, the breakdown for property taxes as the big summary I'm not a fan of, just give me overall expenses.

I recall talking to a vendor back... 8 years ago? Who had a colleague trialling hololens augmented maintenance. I personally felt it would be amazing to be able to look at equipment, bring up a model and explode it to get a look at (Yeah I know you can do that with a laptop, manufacturing lines have notoriously shitty wifi, not to mention greasy around equipment), assisted procedures were a cool idea too, helps people who may not be super familiar with your specific equipment, like shift or loaner maintenance people.

Over a decade ago, different company, they had a bounty on video procedures, you'd strap a go pro to your head and record something like changing batteries, replacing o-rings, removal of electronics etc for a cash bonus. I'm a text and photo person but I totally see the value in video documentation.

Microsoft had a demo at an ignite conference in 2020 if I recall of hololens doing ar metrics, person looked at things like the elevator and would give them real-time performance data, definitely a gimmick but I still think AR could be useful in an industrial setting.

My partner and I gave up destiny before witchqueen dropped, played pretty consistently since house of wolves with a pause just before forsaken until shadow keep. Absolutely loved the core mechanics and the PvP is some of my favourite, but it just felt so stale, barely any new maps, sunsetting old ones, lack of committing to ideas (4v4 was actually solid, some of the maps do not play well in 6s, 3s are fine though), rotating gamemode playlists like d1 had (for 6s I find control annoying after a while, 3s I liked relic in d1, mix in elimination and I'd be good)

It's a shame because as I said, core mechanics rock, slug shorties and hand cannons feel amazing, and fusion rifles are legitimately awesome as well. I have really solid memories of doing stupid things with stuff like the Le Monarque and No Land Beyond. Wasn't a huge fan of some metas but had some fun times with the games.

Was more a thought about if you are concerned about micro fibre particulate (what I took from your post, sorry if I misunderstood) plastic on plastic or plastic on metal are fine for sure, maybe a little exaggerated. Do wonder though about the wear of 3d printed bushings, surfaces won't be smooth, some of the glass filled nylon I've used has almost a soft surface to it, it's really hard to describe, some post processing though would probably make my (mild) concern moot though so.

Wrt composites hobbyist/prosumer grade manufacturers (some that target engineering customers in that bucket too) claim they don't experience the same warping or shrinkage in general, whether or not that's true I don't have enough information to tell you unfortunately. Have found both common types definitely have more rigidity, I use them in places where that really matters.

It's pretty common to see cheap bearings in 3d printed parts, actually mildly interesting to me that bushings don't seem to be, at least at the hobbyist level. To go further, how many designs do you see with heat set inserts or pressed in nuts?

Shit just even for filament printing, there's some solvents that get thrown around online that yeah, you really shouldn't use in a home setting, it's really easy to get things like MEK, which work, but starting to get into nasty territory for stuff that will dissolve filament.

Most people do not have adequate ppe or ventilation to deal with chemicals at home, or a fire cabinet, or even know how to find an SDS.

Semi related, lithium batteries are straight up terrifying, primary cells more than rechargeables, but same idea, I honestly hope no one ever gets to experience an actual full on cell failure, I avoided them thankfully but heard stories of just how much energy is released in even one C or D sized cell going.

On the composite filaments, abrasive filament sure sounds like a great thing to make wear surfaces out of! There's a list if things that idk if I'd print, and that'd be up there, ots oil bronze bushings are like, a buck, maybe 2? And they'll last a hell of a lot longer.

Use FreeCAD, mentioned in a few posts, it's got some clunk but it's 100% useable, has more than enough features for prosumer/hobbyist use, personally I'd make an argument it's fine for enterprise use too, Ondsel seems to think so considering that's the market they're targeting with their releases. I'd recommend the Ondsel release or Realthunder's (what I currently use) which has features/fixes that will be merged back, and 100% look at mainline freecad when the 1.0 release drops

First and foremost, I don't know your circumstances but I can relate and I'm sorry. Your worth isn't measured by "productivity" or "what you amount to", you matter. Work Culture and general North American society isn't great for us with ADHD, all we can do is try our best. I swear to you that even when things look dark and there's no way out, it does end. I'm going to put a ramble of my experience in a spoiler.

::: spoiler Long ramble of my experience My ADHD got me into a pit of credit card debt, small compared to others at just under $19k CAD but I still had $20k+ in my student loan and I couldn't see a way out, struggled hard, kept deferring payments and hitting overdraft, legit at my worst point I was $20 from bankruptcy, I probably could have got support from family and my at the time girlfriend (now partner) but I was too ashamed of it, I didn't want to admit it to my partner (and she knew it, I don't lie well, not that that's a skill I really want to have). It put a lot of strain on my relationship, made me the most anxious I've ever been and very nearly ended my relationship, my life was on the verge of falling apart completely, I'd be lying if I didn't have the exact same thoughts.

I was diagnosed 3 years ago at 31, I did what my dad (who's likely got ADHD if not AuDHD, but won't get evaluated) did and expended all my energy on work to the detriment of other parts of my life, I also struggled with binging (spending is obvious, but also alcohol and food) and emotional regulation.

My partner is the reason I got evaluated, she convinced me to get into therapy (I have a good therapist who has ADHD, didn't know that when I found them). After diagnosis, it took me at least a year to begin accepting that I have ADHD (funny that putting a name to it changes things right), that it effects everything I do and that I have, and will always have it. Hardest thing was realising just his much of my personality is influenced by it. Medication is helpful but it's not perfect, but with therapy, it's helped address some of the maladaptive coping mechanisms I developed.

    :::

If you have access to therapy and aren't already, it helped me immensely. Depending where you live there may be resources you can access through your health authority. We're here if you want, even just venting can be helpful.

Not just was Netscape, Mozilla was straight up founded by Netscape people https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla

On January 23, 1998, Netscape announced that its Netscape Communicator browser software would be free, and that its source code would also be free.[4] One day later, Jamie Zawinski of Netscape registered mozilla.org.[5] The project took its name, "Mozilla", from the original code name of the Netscape Navigator browser—a portmanteau of "Mosaic and Godzilla",[6] and used to coordinate the development of the Mozilla Application Suite, the free software version of Netscape's internet software, Netscape Communicator.[7][8] Zawinski said he arrived at the name "Mozilla" at a Netscape staff meeting.[9] A small group of Netscape employees were tasked with coordinating the new community.

Do you have an iPhone or any phone with lidar built in? It's been a while but I recall it being an option for scanning, make use of tools you already have. I'm not sure what exists for Foss related apps though sorry, and afaik they're not super accurate (dedicated scanners can get <0.01mm resolution from what I've seen but they're expensive) but if your goal is layout that'd do the trick in my view. Heck, as you said, camera scanning would work, there'll be cleanup but should be good enough to get you dimensions.

Another thought, could check with local makerspaces or the like, totally possible they may have scanners you could use, or could put you on the right track. Diy wise, kinects as mentioned, I'm not experienced with these but there are photogrammetry tools, micmac could work, there's meshroom but that needs some compute hardware and COLMAP could also be worth looking into

Edit: Photogrammetry is decently accurate afaik, recall sitting in a tech meeting at my last job where the process engineers from the material handling department presented a poc they did with some cheap drones and cheap cameras, they did a fly over of the pier to scan ore piles and apparently were able to get fairly accurate weight estimates from the photogrammetry results, which was really cool to me.

Seriously, had a lumia 1020, for the time its photos were fantastic, especially compared to the 4s work issued me, was never really against a camera bump tbh but it totally sold me on the idea.

Have a pixel these days and seriously impressed with what smart phone photos can look like these days, found my Sony Eriksson slide from 2006ish the other day had a memory stick in it, the photos are worse than webcam photos, really rough.

Did a Canbus Upgrade, figured I'd finally post my v2.4

![](https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/c7712bb6-56f5-470d-9df1-b91b9eb29fce.jpeg) Planning on finishing an ercf this year and going can for that so figured good opportunity to swap the hotend over, saved a substantial amount of wiring even compared to the hotend PCB I had, saved the wiring harness just to compare ![](https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/b9ad3848-0d5d-46ef-872a-55adc5446ca1.jpeg) went for a usb can device over running can from the octopus pro, did want to swap the pro over to can as well but ended up keeping it the same instead of messing with reflashing firmware. Hotend has a little 3015 fan and a heatsink on the arm chip so cooling should be fine, looked up the datasheet and it's got a tjmax of like 120c and rated for ambient -40-80c so don't think I need to worry about it, if it's an issue I'll run a fresh air feed to it, will see how it likes abs in the summer shortly. All in all, super easy swap over, definitely cleaned up my rats nest (though I still should cut the stepper wires to length, they hide in the imitation panduit I printed, it's neat enough to be serviceable and not be a hazard), used katapult (formerly canboot) and then flashed klipper onto the board, only minor issue is it uses these tiny jst connectors, like really small, btt ebb sb2209 and btt u2c usb can device, [](https://canbus.esoterical.online/) was a good resource to follow for any of the network interface configs that I needed to do and gave some good details on diagnostics.

Recommendations for STL sculpting tools or guides (FLOSS preferred)

Quick question to the community, does anyone have some good tools to sculpt stls or step files? Context, I'm working on some decorative keychains and have a vector image and text I want to add to the base object. I've used aolidworks for both in the past with alright results but I've switched over to freecad this year, haven't had a lot of luck adding in there, vector image is a tracing of a dog that I was provided, it's simplified but still has a lot of components. I did look into blender but be honest I'm totally lost using it and have no clue what I'm doing coming from parametric modeling, I'm not an artist at all, my comfort zone is functional parts usually, but was approached by a friend. I did do some mockups in prusa/superslicer where I've added my image and text as negative volumes and merged into a single part. It works but it feels like a [really hacky workaround](https://xkcd.com/763/) (relevant XKCD) and would prefer to do it right. Any suggestions or resources would be appreciated! If interested, here's the mockup that I've done a few test prints on, found I needed to change the line width of my vector a few times and made some features exaggerated so they'd come out more. I've (poorly) covered some identifying text on the back, left the rest as to get a feel for what I'm trying to do, did do some rough sanding on the below pictures. There's a pocket on the top edge that accepts a keyring, it's kinda chunky, about the size of a pog slammer or a thicker poker chip. ![Rough Sanded Front of keychain with image of a Bernese Mountain Dog](https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/91d546cf-41de-45a9-a81b-28e99ab6c526.jpeg)![Back of keychain with some details obscured](https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/0b982a47-664f-48e2-aca4-29b965772f15.jpeg)

FYI - Octoprint (with a plugin) and Klipper support cancelling individual objects while printing

Just as an FYI because it's saved me grief in the past, both klipper and octoprint can be setup to exclude certain objects while printing. You need to setup your slicer to provide gcode that enables the feature, but it allows you to stop printing a bad object, can reduce wastage in the case where only one part has failed but the others are ok. Prusa/Superslicer are what I have experience using it with, I used a [preprocessing script](https://github.com/kageurufu/preprocess_cancellation) to output compatable gcode but apparently there's a label objects option directly in both slicers, the klipper link below goes over enabling that feature. [AFAIK Octoprint needs a Plugin](https://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/cancelobject/) [Klipper has native support](https://docs.mainsail.xyz/overview/features/exclude-objects)
