Montenegro court acquits 13 in retrial over alleged election day plot https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/montenegro-court-acquits-13-retrial-over-alleged-election-day-plot-2024-07-12/

PODGORICA, July 12 (Reuters) - A Montenegro court acquitted 13 people including pro-Russian politicians and two Russian intelligence officers on Friday in a retrial over an alleged 2016 election day plot to topple the government and kill then-prime minister Milo Djukanovic. The defendants were initially convicted in 2019 and given long prison terms over the alleged plot against the pro-Western Djukanovic, who led the small Adriatic state almost continuously as premier or president for three decades until 2023. But the verdict was overturned on appeal in 2021 and a retrial was ordered.

China hits back at Nato over Russia accusations www.bbc.com

China's foreign minister Wang Yi has hit back at Nato's "groundless accusations" that Beijing is helping Russia in its war on Ukraine. He has also warned the Western alliance against stirring up confrontation. Mr Wang's comments, made in a call with his Dutch counterpart, came hours after leaders of Nato member states gathered in Washington DC and issued a declaration that mentioned the war. They accused China of being a "decisive enabler" of Russia through its "large-scale support for Russia's defence industrial base", in some of their harshest remarks yet about Beijing.

US clears way for Ukrainian military unit to use American weapons https://www.reuters.com/world/us-clears-way-ukrainian-military-unit-use-american-weapons-2024-06-11/

WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - A U.S. review found no evidence of human rights violations by Ukraine's Azov Brigade, paving the way for it to use American training and weapons, the State Department said on Tuesday, citing Russian disinformation aimed at discrediting the unit. U.S. law bars foreign security forces from U.S. military assistance if they have committed gross violations of human rights, but a review of the National Guard of Ukraine's 12th Special Forces Azov Brigade cleared them for U.S. funds, the department said in a statement. "After thorough review, Ukraine’s 12th Special Forces Azov Brigade passed Leahy vetting as carried out by the U.S. Department of State," the department wrote, referring to the Leahy Law. The move allows the Biden administration to reverse a decade-old ban on allowing the Ukrainian military unit to use U.S. weapons, according to The Washington Post, which first reported the decision.

People Leaving Rafah Describe Fearful Flight From Israeli Assaults www.nytimes.com

Manal al-Wakeel and her extended family of 30 people thought they were going home. Displaced from their home in Gaza City months ago, Ms. al-Wakeel and relatives began packing their bags on Monday and preparing to dismantle their tent in Rafah, at the southern edge of the Gaza Strip. Hamas had announced that it had accepted a cease-fire proposal from Qatar and Egypt, leaving many Gazans thinking that a truce was imminent. Their joy was short-lived; it soon became clear that Hamas was not talking about the same proposal endorsed days earlier by Israel, which said the two sides remained far apart.

Hi there, we talked on discord but thought I'd make a comment here too.

Not from Asia/Aus region but due to my timezone and work I am available in the peak activity time for those regions.

I think that I would be a good fit for the team as I have had months of experience working with the c/world and c/politics team. I like to encourage discussion on these very important topics by following the community rules and acting on reports made by users promptly and with my own bias acknowledged. I choose not to comment much in the discussion as I feel that a moderators' presence should be seen through the discussion not heard in the discussion itself.

How cyberscams are drawing China into Myanmar’s civil war www.vox.com

Last fall, a coalition of rebel groups known as the Three Brotherhood Alliance launched a rapid-fire offensive across Myanmar’s northern Shan state, quickly overrunning more than 100 military outposts and seizing several key towns along the country’s border with China. This in itself was not unusual. Myanmar’s military government has faced insurgencies from ethnic and political militias for decades, and there’s been a major uptick in rebel activity since the 2021 coup, which brought the country’s current military junta to power, ending a short period of representative government. Over the past few months, the government has been rapidly losing ground to rebel forces in several regions of the country.

Houthi Retaliation Threats Echo After US Airstrikes in Yemen www.telesurenglish.net

All U.S. and British interests have become legitimate targets, the Houthi's Council declared. A geopolitical storm is brewing in the Red Sea after U.S.-led strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen on Friday sparked a strong reaction from the Iran-backed militia, who immediately condemned the "brutal aggression" and vowed retaliation The Houthi's Supreme Political Council declared that it would not allow the aggressors to escape punishment and "all U.S. and British interests have become legitimate targets." Meanwhile, the internationally recognized government of Yemen issued a statement condemning recent military actions by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, blaming the Houthis for "dragging the country into a military confrontation arena for propaganda purposes." The strikes mainly targeted weapons stores and drone assembly workshops to "intentionally avoid a direct impact on senior Houthi leaders," said Salah Bin Laghbar, an Anden-based political analyst.

He took 40.2 percent of votes cast, according to results from the Central Election Commission. “I want to thank the Taiwanese people for writing a new chapter in our democracy,” Lai said in his victory speech. “We are telling the international community that between democracy and authoritarianism, we will stand on the side of democracy.” In the run-up to the polls, China denounced Lai as a dangerous separatist, said he would be a threat to peace in the region if he won, and called the elections a choice between “peace and war”.

If I could have one wish for the new year, it would be for Britain’s criminal justice system to be reformed in a way that would ensure the arrest, prosecution and conviction of every single rapist in the country. I do not mean, of course, any man accused of rape, but every man who has actually committed rape. One of the most prevalent and persuasive myths about rape and sexual assault is that a large number of allegations are false and men who have been publicly accused of rape but could not be convicted in a court of law are the victims of grave miscarriages of justice.

The crisis highlights the challenges ahead for Noboa, who took power in November after pledging during an election campaign to curb violence as drug trafficking gangs increasingly transport cocaine through Ecuador.

Taiwan's presidential candidate Ko Wen-je seeks a middle ground with China, attracting young voters apnews.com

HSINCHU, Taiwan (AP) — With Taiwan’s presidential and parliamentary elections less than two weeks away, the island’s alternative party candidate Ko Wen-je is promoting a policy of patience toward China, which has been upping its threat to annex the island by force. In the middle of a day of campaigning in the city of Hsinchu, home to many of Taiwan’s most prosperous technology firms, Ko took a half-hour lunch break to speak with The Associated Press in Mandarin Chinese and English, often expanding on his answers in his well-known erudite manner.

While I did not ban you I may have removed some of the posts or comments in the past that were reported for rule violations.

I apologize if the process for appealing is unclear or if any of your posts or comments were removed in error.

Above all else I apologize if you were made to feel unwelcome here as it has been important for me the past 6 months moderating this community to try and develop a place for discussion from many sides on topics around the world.

Before the most recent additions to the mod team we had a practice of using a 1 day temp ban, 3 day temp ban, 7 day temp ban, and then permanent ban for many rule violations. (the exception being clearly racist trolling type of users) I think it would be good to return to a standardized structure as well as removing the MBFC requirements as the best way to fight misinformation is to prove its bias in comments rather than being the arbiters of good journalism.

There are members of the mod team from the U.S, U.K, and E.U

I am a Catholic Woman from Southern Europe and have always thought of this community as one where we can come together to learn and discuss current events. I try not to engage much in comments as to me the role of moderator should be one that facilitates the user's discussions above all else.

I removed the comment for publically posting direct messages of a moderator which is in violation of rule 6 but as things are now changing I did not realize that rule was changing. So I am very sorry for deleting your comment we had been told many months ago that appealing a comment or post that was removed is for the meta communities like lemmy.world/c/moderators or lemmy.world/c/support however many times a user will send me a message to talk about it and i have often gone back and restored.

Going forward I won't be deleting comments regarding moderators and hope that we can have a great community to discuss current events

already exists! I'm the creator/mod of that but there isn't really much engagement there other than my posts :) so I'm happy about the idea of working together with the lemmy.world/c/politics mods (if they want me) to take the level of article and discussion quality to the next level!

I have read that Massa used a metro scheme that would display the cost of the tickets for the Buenos Aires metro if the subsidy was removed. So anyone purchasing a ticket would see the current price (around 50 pesos) and then what the price would be under Milei or Bullrich which partially explains the big switch in voters from the polls.

This is unverified social media stuff so take it critically.

I have constantly had timely response to reports they can look at my mod actions or actions on reports for that. The sidebar is currently as I had last changed it, so you can see that posting full articles or using a means to by-pass paywalls are forbidden. I personally have removed posts that violated that rule. As far as I knew the /c/world community was in sync with the us focused c/news and c/politics communities and was never told of anything that was wrong. A large part of why this was so upsetting to me as I had no communication or warning, just I wake up to be removed from moderation and removed from the discord. Thank you for acting as an intermediary.

thank you, I don't really care about top mod and if i made some big mistake to be demoted from that i only wish to know so i can do better. If the admins don't want me to be a moderator any more i would appreciate knowing what I did wrong for closure. I have been removed from the discord when removed from being a moderator so can only communicate here.

Really quite sad that I was removed without any sort of communication or a chance to respond, I have spent months removing posts and comments that were against the code of conduct. I have responded to criticism regarding the moderation of the community in the past and the way this has occurred has broken my heart about a community i cared about.

I'll share some recent quotes from messages I've sent to other mods and admins:

"Hello I wanted to send a message to say that I am interested in helping more. I really like lemmy.world and want the platform to succeed and want to help."

"Even if another is chosen for these roles I would be happy to help as a community moderator to help lemmy.world grow and continue to be the best lemmy instance! Thanks for everything you and the admin team do 🙂"

    https://rm.coe.int/factsheets-on-romani-culture-1-7-romani-group-names/1680aac36b

"There is no agreement among scholars regarding the origin of the ethnonym Sinti (also called Sinte). A popular etymology among the Sinti is that their self-appellation is based on the Pakistani province of ‘Sindh’.

Such explanation indicate that the Sinti were already before the migration to Europe distinct from the Roma, a fact which supports the Sinti in underlining their separate iden- tity. Nevertheless, there is no doubt about that the ethnonym Sinti cannot be of Indic origin, since the word ‘Sinti’ is inflected as Eu- ropean loanwords (see the below table).

It however remains unclear from which contact language was the word Sinti borrowed and what was its original meaning. Based on historical sources, Matras (1999) assumes that the ethnonym Sinti turned up at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and was used as a name of a particular Romani group among the German Roma.

The original endonym of the group was Kale, a Romani group name which is widespread also in other Western and Norther European coun- tries. The new group name Sinti seems to completely replace the older name Kale in the beginning of the 20th century."

I think that they are different based on their history:

    https://sfi.usc.edu/education/roma-sinti/en/conosciamo-i-roma-e-i-sinti/chi-sono/da-dove-vengono-il-nome/il-nome-rom-sinto-zingaro.php

"“Roma” (or Sinto, Manouche, Kalo, Romanichal) and “Gypsy” (or nomad, Gitano, Bohemien, Sarrasin, Heiden etc.) are not the same thing and they are not synonyms. These terms refer to the same people but viewed and designated differently.

“Roma” is the word (ethnonym) that the Roma use to describe themselves: it is the term for the members of that specific people and it is Romani for “man”. “Gypsy” is a derogatory, disparaging term – for many an insult — used by the majority population to define the Roma people."
