Articles like this creates the illusion that facebook can be held accountable. But really, what we need is for everybody to realize that facebook is just a unnessecary middleman.

I think peertube shouldnt be a platform for regular uploading of content. It takes up too much resources. Instead we should play to our strength to low resource solutions.

For video sharing, I think it would be better to focus on filesharing (offline and online).

I agree, lemmy is not a walled garden. What I'm saying is, lemmy is lacking an underlying design philosophy. Design should be guided by principles, rather than replicating the feel of reddit. Functionality should be created to serve human needs rather than from trying to replicate reddit functionality.

We shouldn't look to the people of cyberspace to understand how to develop platforms, especially not the centralized parts of cyberspace. Instead we should look to the people of earthspace. The offline people. People and communities. What do they want? Or what do they say they want?

To be clear this is a criticism not targeted specifically at Lemmy, but the fediverse as a whole.

Justifications for design choices, backed up by principles that creates the foundation for a humane platform. There needs to be a justification for how a platform is presented like it is. What is the purpose of the platform? Who is the target audience? And build everything from there.

No, because its just a copy. Lemmy just takes reddit and slaps decentralization on top of it. Therefore it has the baggage of walled garden philosophy.

Something that would replace reddit is a platform that is willing to embrace the strengths of decentralization and truely design around its strengths. Design around human connectedness, community building, community collaboration, accessability (even for technically illiterate), detoxing.

The judges are not part of the alternate solution I suggested. They were only used for the sake of the example to quantify the value of the comments before anyone had voted. The judges ranking reflects the relationship between comments in terms of quality.

The solution I suggested is one where voters compare comments and pick the best instead. Afterwards a topological sort is done to let the best float to the top. With enough comparisons, the ranking would be accurate.

    Topological comment sorting

EDIT: More precise titles. The way we sort comments on lemmy today is through giving everyone the ability to up and downvote any comment. You upvote comments you want to be more visible and downvote comments you want to have less visibility. I think ranking comments are great if some opinions contribute more. Imagine the value of a comment can be determined before voting. Perhaps with a panel of judges. With rankings -10 to 10 where -10 is dangerous misinformation, 0 has no meaningful contribution and 10 is perhaps mindblowingly enlightening or empowering. # Example of lemmy style sorting Lets say a post is submitted. On the first day, it received the comments with a judges score (user, score): (monkey, 8), (zebra, -2), (horse, 5), (panda, 3), (rhino, 3). A post get the most visibility the first day. Therefore, those who post early can get a lot of votes. However on the second day, one user submitted the comment: (Flower, 9) A this point in time the post doesnt have that many voters. And the top comments has increased visibility, so for every vote flower gains, the top comment might have received another. So we end up with the final ranking: Monkey, horse, panda, flower, rhino, zebra. So it ends up only ranking similar to panda and rhino even though the score was much higher. There was a mismatch between votes and score. # Solution, the topoligical sort We should concider moving away from voting on comments individually to voting comparatively. Where you perhaps determine the most valuable comment out of a selection. Then a topological sort can put the best comment on top. So even if flower is late to the party, their insight is still spread.

Do you want me to be dishonest about what my impression is? Ofcourse it's horrible. But war is forcing soldiers into chaos where they can die at any moment. They may have fractions of a second to evaluate whether a person is an enemy or civilian. It is irrational to expect that they are going to be perfect. And that is what this communicates to me. Because of the extreme condition, they end up killing civilians. Because of warmongering, we turn soldiers into murderers.

If we want to embrace a cryptocurrency, it need to be anonymous with respect to the world and the nodes required for transactions. And it needs to be private between sender and receiver. It also has to prove that it is truly green, perhaps more green than traditional banking. And it has to explain why it is better than traditional banking in terms of solving inequality.

I think that a people and community funded cyberspace would ensure that it is developed in the interests of people and communities. They would donate to projects that they genuinly were interested in and it would make them much more aware of digital issues. Do you agree with this? If not, then how should cyberspace be funded? If so, does a good solution exist? Should we get everybody to sign up for a patreon account, create recurring paymants through paypal or through bankaccount? Does it not exist? Then what would this solution require?

    The fediverse is flawed

People view the fediverse as the final solution to the structural problem of the internet. I dont think so. I am an technoanarkist from a human perspective. I believe in the human web and the community web, where nodes represents people and communities. The ideology of the fediverse is that if an instance can federate, its good. Its equally flawed as saying the adoption of open software will lead to digital freedom. This is one of the reasons Stallman couldnt mobilize for digital freedom. They didnt have a human understandable vision. We need to think further than just the technical aspects if we want people power in cyberspace. I believe we have to stop to look to those in power and instead look to our communities. What do they want? What does people want? What does organizers and communities want? We should develop the web with people and communities demands in mind. The web should be a tool to strengthen communities and empower people. The web has the potential to destroy the world and be its savior. It depends on the structure.

Learn esperanto to fight english cultural dominance

English is burdened with a culture that emphasize empirialism, capitalism, individualism and so on. A culture that ignores climate catostraphy, global inequality and brings disproportionate attention to countries with english as national language. Additionally english is the language of Trump, Boris Johnson, Margareth Thatcher and George Bush jr.. Protest the english language by embracing esperanto. Break language segregation! Today, the world is segregated by language. It is very resource heavy to learn a new ethnic language. Esperanto is like other constructed languages made to be easy to learn through consistent grammer, phonetics and morphemes. You know how to pronounce a sentence. You can determine the type of word by looking at the last letter. Even if you havent seen a particular word before, the chances are that you can predict its meaning if you know the morphemes. It is estimated that it requires a tenth in time investment to learn esperanto compares to ethnic languages. The world language is political and it enables english imperialism. Look up your local esperanto group. Learn it. Talk about it. With collegues, friends, acquantances and family. Engage your local community. Influence! Some useful resources: Dictionary https://lernu.net/vortaro ActivityPub https://esperanto.masto.host Nice esperanto course: Kurso de Esperanto

    Federated subscription service

I'm interested in a complimentary federated service for peertube and similar services. One can subscribe to creators and instances. You can't create independent posts, because it is solely made as a subscription service. However you can comment on creations. It is intended as a tool to keep track of creators you are interested in, and have a seamless experience with going from one video to the next and be able to post quick comments. I'm envisioning that this service could be distributed and serverless like Scuttlebutt. That way, there would be no signup process involved. One could then download software/ app for your phone and start adding instances and creators. To comment, one would perhaps need some verification system, like connecting your app to a user to avoid misuse. A service like this would act similar to an federated RSS, but with more flexibility. I believe a service like this would be superior to any subscription solution we have today, that be through RSS, peertube, I believe this would bring a lot of utility to the fediverse. It would make it far easier to develop new federated projects. And it would be a great gateway into the fediverse. It would make it far easier to interact with content which would make the fediverse look more populated and more exciting. If you think this is a good idea, say aye in the comments.

    Using News app on tab.digital

I have a subscription of Family and Friends on the site tab.digital. This would allow me to add apps to my nextcloud. One of the apps I have been most excited about has been the News app, which can administrate open subscription feeds like RSS. However, I have a couple issues. First of all, I've been notified that the app is unstable on my Family and Friends subscription from a dialogue box. I don't know if that is due to me having the wrong subscription or whether it has to do with the app itself being unstable. So far I've ignored that warning, because I can risk the service failing. I'll just have to contact the provider to reset in that case. I have sent an email to the provider, but I expect an response on monday so It's kind of long to wait. Does anybody have any experience with News app on Nextcloud or with tab.digital?

Decomposing peertube into a spectator service

When I use peertube, I interact in limited ways. I dont like, I dont subscribe. And Im not commenting. I usually only watch. I also find it slightly inaccessible. And that's not because I don't want to interact. Rather, it is because I don't think there are convenient and meaningful ways to do so as of now. On the one side, if you use your peertube account to interact with content from the site itself, it will work well. However content abroad is inconvenient and requires insight. For example it requires several clicks and typing in your federated account to interact with a video. Secondly, it isn't attractive for passerbys to create an peertube account, because the software is primarily targeted toward video creators, and not the spectators. Thirdly, it will increase the responsibilities of admins and moderators. Not only would they have to keep track of videos following terms, but also that users are interacting well. I believe Peertube should outsource interaction and subscription to a new federated software. Let's call it Duckling just for the sake of making it easier to reference. Duckling is somewhat of an interaction service. Here you can subscribe to channels and instances, renamed to idols and pubs respectively, just to make it more human. If you find a joyful instance, you can add it to your pubs. Pubs should be visited to find new idols. One of the reason I find this idea quite interesting is because it would decompose peertube into smaller and more meaningful projects. Peertube could focus on making the best video hosting service, whereas Duckling could focus on becoming the best spectator service. For example, Duckling could experiment with how to display threads and sort comments. Or make it easier to discover relevant content. As the development progress of such software, it could be meaningful to expand the scope of Duckling. Perhaps to make it more of a general purpose federated subscription service.

    How should anti capitalists invest?

I'm thinking about anti capitalist investments. Traditionally, it has been common to talk about investment in the sense of "generating" wealth. The economy is going to grow, therefore it is good to invest your money in mutual funds or diverse portfolios. Traditional investment is orwellian for buying the rights to workers labor. Therefore, by principle I shouldn't invest in the traditional sense. But just having money just laying around in the bank isn't very clever either as inflation will devalue it. So I'm thinking about anti capitalist investments. ## Investments in non-profits My idea of investment doesn't just encompass how to increase my personal wealth, but also the wealth of the planet, wealth of human beings and wealth of animals. This means that I consider a donation an investment. I could view such investments as giving much higher return than even the most ethical company. By donating, I'm also incentivizing myself to pay more attention to these organizations. ## Investment in personal property I could invest in possessions that I predict is going to be very useful to fight capitalism. I could buy tools to create independence from big tech. Or items that improve my mental health or helps to connect with other people. ## Investment in personal sector I could work less in order to invest in my personal wealth and working for non-profit sector. ## Investment in independence from work Another investment type is one to reduce loans and expenditure to as close as zero. This would reduce the corporate and state workforce. It would also free up your time to do what you want to do. Perhaps start a non-profit or spend your time helping out established ones. What are your thoughts on this?

A comparison of the decentralization potential for email and mastodon

I was reading this post by Alyssa Rosenzweig and found it to be a very enjoyable read. https://rosenzweig.io/blog/the-federation-fallacy.html Rosenzweig tells us that although we have created federated social media, we should expect them to centralize. That is what has happened to email and empirical data demonstrates that this is happening for mastodon as well. To be clear, this post was made in march 2019 and I am not aware whether she has changed her opinion. The current state of decentralization within the mastodon ecosystem may also have changed. I will challenge the statement that email and mastodon has an equal potential to decentralize the web. Which is not explicitly said in the post, but which I feel is a sentiment. I will talk about mastodon here for the sake of making the talk less abstract. This text will be applicable to other fediverse social infrastructures as well. # Introduction We like to compare email and mastodon to showcase the flexibility that is lacking in centralized social media. This comparison is valuable because it makes these concepts much more understandable for newcomers. However, treating email and mastodon as equal forces in the fight for decentralization is inappropriate. # Differences between email and mastodon It is important to emphasize a core difference between email and mastodon. The **community element**. Although email and mastodon are federated and decentralized, email doesn't have a community element. Email only connects you to those you follow whereas mastodon is designed to connect you to your community and your federation. How easy it is to self host is the **selfhostability**. Is it easy to install? Is it resource demanding? Is it possible to pay others to run the service? The better the selfhostability, the more people will be able to do it. It is essential for the decentralization potential. # Different mentalities There are two mentalities. The globalization mentality and the community mentality. Those with a **globalization mentality** view an instance just like an email provider. They want to subscribe to exactly the users they are interested in and that's it. The community element doesn't really matter to them because they don't join an instance based on a theme. They could perhaps be interested in mastodon.social or mas.to. Those with a **community mentality** will seek instances based on the community element of an instance. Those with a community mentality are more likely to subscribe to instances with strong themes. They could perhaps be interested in gensokyo.social, dolphin.town or meow.social. # Understanding the decentralization potential To understand the decentralization potential for each of these solutions, we need to understand: - who will feel compelled to host the solution. - how will users elect their providers. By doing this, we can determine the decentralization potential. # Email user The email user has a globalization mentality and will judge an email provider by pricing, security and other technical criterias. Nobody choose email provider based on community. Centralized actors has a much greater advantage of hosting when they only needs to focus on the technical aspects. They can push the prices down and all their spending can easily be advertised. Low risk, high reward. The selfhostability of email is a technical nightmare or from what I've heard. You gain autonomy, but there is low community reward. High risk, low reward. Based on this analysis, we should expect users to flock to centralized solutions. # Mastodon user If the mastodon user has a globalization mentality, the users are most attracted to big instances. They have most likely been active on twitter and just interested in a replacement rather than actual structural change. Perhaps they view bigger instances as more sustainable. They are disinterested in thematic instances because that would arbitrarily limit speech. If the mastodon user has a community mentality they will gravitate towards instances with a strong local or federated culture. They believe that as instances grows big, it stops being an interconnected community. They value small and thematic and value good moderation. Mastodon can be very risky for centralized actors as it requires involvement in the community. Often times it can come at shareholders, electorate or userbase expense. We can see this all the time with various mastodon.social, twitter and facebook contraversies. It can conceivably be done right and in that case, the rewards could be great. But definitely not ideal for all centralized actors. High risk, variable reward. How is mastodon's selfhostability? You can allow others to run your instance through Masto Host or Spacebear Federation. And the code is designed to be easy to install. If operating systems such as yunohost properly supports the mastodon app, this will also increase the selfhostability. # So will Mastodon be a force for decentralization? Mastodon could easily become centralized if enough people have the globalization mentality and selfhosting remains unaccessable/unused. Corporate actors can easily capitalize on the globalization mentality. On the other side... If we can shape the masses into having community mentalities. If we can shape development to improve selfhostability. If we can create enthusiasm for digital freedom on the ground. The future will be decentralized. CC BY 🧡

A good mentality for a blooming fediverse

We have yet to see the pioneers of the fediverse. Both in terms of development and culturally. But in order to ensure that these pioneers will flourish, we need to have the right mindset. A mindset that will ensure that our energy is spent as well as possible. Developers should not limit their production to clones of existing centralized platforms. That is not to say that the development of platforms such as peertube and mastodon as meaningless. They have been necessary to prove that decentralization can take place. The point is rather, that we should shift our focus away from the mindset of replacing centralized solutions. Instead we should move towards an empirical approach of understanding the social demand. Influencers should acknowledge how decentralization is about community building rather than concentration of attention. There is no longer a drive toward mindlessly chasing ever increasing follower rates and view counts. Influencers should be aware of how creative use of decentralized and libre tools can establish a strong foundation for blooming communities.

Symbolism in creating a digital rights movement

I believe that if we can create a symbol to represent digital issues, it will be easier to mobilize around these issues. We need a brand that people can point to so that we appear less like a cesspool of aimless people and more like a movement with a grand vision for the future. I believe that we can use the color orange. This color represents: - the excitement of having tools that has no dependency on developers. - the freedom of expression you gain from having privacy from corporations, states and peers. - the peace of mind from knowing that your device is repairable and made to last. - the warmth of an inclusive internet where everybody has access and feels welcome. Regardless of wealth and socioeconomic status. If you have other suggestions for symbolism, I encourage you to post a comment.

    Decentralized Single Sign-on

The decentralization of Single Sign-on seems like a natural step in improving usability and accessability of the fediverse. It will require a lot less account and make it far easier to interact with content. Are there anybody working on this?

How to make the development of libre software more democratic

I believe that in order for libre software to serve the people, we need to make sure that the process is actually democratic. The voices of normal people has to be heard. There is miniscule interest for libre software developers to listen to normal people. It is understandable. They invest their free time to create something and they have their own vision of what they want to develop. Developers may also be disinterested because there is too much that can go wrong. I also think that normal people understand this and it has gotten to the point that nobody is even trying to give any feedback. I believe the lack of enthusiasm is because there isn't any arena for voicing these desires. I believe what we are missing is an arena to cultivate the relationship between developers and people. Where people can voice what they want, generate attention for these desires and connecting people to developers. # My suggestion I'm imagining a platform where a person can create a post voicing their desires. A person can give **peer support** to **desiree** where they argue why this would help them as well. **Developers** can propose a solution. A peer supporter can vote on this solution as interested/uninterested. A peer supporter can apply for **mandate** which desiree can grant. A person can propose software that already exist or are in development that will satisfy the desire. The desiree's voting is highlighted. If developer and mandates are satisfied with the response, they can proceed to the next step where they meet up in any format to get a thorough understanding of what the participants expectations are. If the participants agree, a post will be created associated with the original post with an official statement of what will happen. The mandates and the developer will sign the contract. This will notify all peer supporters. The rest of the project can happen independently from this arena.

Smart phone apps to record and edit simultaniously

So I've been using tiktok for a while and I really like the feature of recording and editing videos simultaneously. Here's the process: First you set how long you want the video to be and whether to add audio. Second, adjust the inputs for the next clip and record. Repeat this step until finished. It requires only two clicks to discard a clip. Third, you can insert additional effects such as text, voiceover, adjust clips, filter and stickers. Fourth, create a description and set how you want people to interact with the content. Stitching, dueting, comments. Optional, you can start the creation process through interaction for example through dueting, stitching and video commenting. # My suggestion I want to see see libre software that takes inspiration from this process. Making it easier to create creative low effort videos. Saving the videos as files so that it is easy to use them exactly like you want to use them. In particular, this will help decentralized video sharing. Have the option to save as a format that explicitly state what license it is under and what types of interactions you accept. If the video is rendering content from another video, an appropriate subset of that content will be stored in the format as well.

    Idea for word processing software

Looking for a word processing software where it's much easier to set up your styles. There are several modes. Design mode let you set style properties. You can change font size with slider, edit html code, edit style name. You have many ways of selecting colors. You can set style shortcuts. You can save design to use on other documents. Content mode ignores what paper you write on. It is only intended to show the content. This mode has little layout to remove distractions. You can however easily move between other documents. When you are finished writing, you can adjust the content so that it flows correctly. Don't know if it make sense to have it's own mode for this.

    Software/service for creating fediverse stickers

I want to create stickers to advertise my profile. So I'll need to get some pictures slap them into gimp, add the text from my profile and have the content be consistent with the presentation of my site. I can do this. However, it is a little bothersome because I'm not too comfortable with gimp yet. I'm also thinking that in long term, it would be good for new users to have an easy way of producing their own stickers. The input could be username and their preferred layout. The output is a standard profile that you can continue to edit through the software/service. When you are finished, you can download the file so that you can continue editing it in some other software (.xcf), or you can export it as png, pdf, etc.

Strong moderation tools in the fediverse: Being aware of it's dangers

This was originally a response to @lemm1ngs recent post, but I figured that it suited as it's own post. The strong moderation tools for social societies gives us great advantages. The strength is that we don't live in the centralized wild west anymore. The terms of service are upheld. More moderation can turn communities much more healthy. On the other side, there's a power shift. Moderators and admins on an instance can abuse their power. They can exercise power without the transparency of the process, they can change the terms without notice. They can do this without the intervention of the members of the society. They can ban members without notice, they can censor what goes against their own personal agenda. They are the gatekeepers and decide whom can be allowed in and whom are left out, in effect deciding the demography of the instance. They can also abuse power by intentionally ignoring members who overstep the terms in order to keep the population up. Understanding the weaknesses of the federated social infrastructures makes us aware of how to handle them. We can construct weak or strong systems to combat the worst aspects. As the fediverse grows, it will be increasingly important to have philosophies around how to govern social societies. Because if we do not have it, we will lack the tools to criticize mismanaged societies. It is very possible to envision a future where we gain a lot of traction, but where a few big societies sabotages the reputation of the fediverse as a whole. A good philosophy can also coordinate the efforts across societies.

How to determine whether an app is invasive or not?

I don't really know how to check this. I know that if the organization behind an app has good practices, then I should be able to trust their apps. Otherwise, I don't know how to trust anything on the app store. For example, I want a screen recorder, but I don't know where to find a non invasive one.

We need a masto.host for peertube

Running your own servers can be very stressful for reasons I'm not going to get into here. It is very understandable that a lot of people want to steer away from that. At the same time, we need people to take back ownership of the internet. In short term we have to rule out that they can set up these services by themselves. The digital alphabetism is so low that a significant proportion will struggle with the setup. Me included. That is why it's so great that we have services like masto.host which does this job for them. For the most important services, we need self hosting to be as simple as possible. In particular, I think that the peertube project needs a masto.host like service.

Leaving reddit, here's my manifesto. Thoughts?

Just wanted to share what I intend to post tomorrow on reddit. Any thoughts? I think I'll post it on free software. My hope is that I encourage people to move to lemmy. Not sure if all of it makes sense. START I have been on reddit for some years. I liked going to league of legends subreddits discussing theory. Going to juggling subreddits to show my skills and discuss. Following US politics. Having some laughs. Learning how nuanced people's opinions could be. Last summer I did some live streams of me juggling. I posted a little bit about my vision for a better digital future. I believe that reddit is a bad platform. Not because of it's content, but because it is controlled by a single organization, like in a dictatorship. With it's only values being creating profit for it's shareholders. It has a business model of tracking their users and create addiction among it's users. It will only devolve in time. There are two forces in the digital realm. Those who want to concentrate power. They want to centralize the internet, enchain users to walled gardens, privatize code, restrict how we share (copyright, drm) and monitor us. And those who want to distribute power. Those who fight for the decentralization of the internet, liberating users with community owned pods, public code, sharing culture and privacy. I am an distributist. That does not mean I shouldn't use software and services made by concentratists. But my end goal is to create the most amount of freedom for people. I can use a concentratist solution if it means that more people will gain freedom. The means justify the cause. I believed it made sense for me to stay on the platform to spread awareness about distributionism. I have been using lemmy lately and I believe it can take on reddit. Therefore I will make this last post to endorse lemmy and urge everyone to move to the platform and/or create their own lemmy instance. I will also encourage subreddit admins to abandon their subreddits and link to a lemmy pod instead. https://join-lemmy.org/instances One post I made recently as example. https://lemmy.ml/post/74457 This is the last post I will make before I delete my account, but I may reply the next couple days. Also remember to create a mastodon or other fediverse account to subscribe to fediverse content. END

Creating a brochure to empower iphone users

This brochure intends to minimize data footprint, increase autonomy and creating independence from big tech corporations. I want the content to be as down to earth as possible. I will avoid technical language. I will explain exactly what you win by making the switch to certain apps. I will encourage better digital issue awareness. I will inform about what settings to use. It will be written in my mother tongue norwegian. Therefore I will inform about a norwegian digital rights organization. I encourage to post other suggestions. I will supply this with a brochure on digital issues.
