Manyverse might be good for that. It's P2P social networking that syncs whenever you've got internet.

The entire suite of simple mobile apps is also really good, the Notes app in particular seems useful.

Organic Maps or OsmAnd will let you download maps offline and navigate with just GPS.

Aard 2 will let you browse an entire dump of Wikipedia and Wiktionary.

I'll never use any Microsoft products again because of the inevitable enshittification. It might be nice now, but that's just because they're in the Embrace step of EEE. I could waste a bunch of time churning through that process, or I could learn tools that have proven that they're in it for the long haul.

If you want to use matplotlib, try out Seaborn. It's a wrapper around matplotlib with nice defaults. It's limited by that choice though, and the API is only less worse than matplotlib, not actually good. I'm using plotly for a side project atm and I'm liking it. Bokeh is nice too, but it wasn't really able to handle some of the things I wanted for the side project.

I got the OP3 and then upgraded to the 6T. The hardware is nice, but after I discovered that OxygenOS sucks up your private data, I switched to LineageOS. That's been a good way for me to degoogle, but I'll probably look elsewhere for my next phone. Lineage stopped supporting newer OP phones after they made it harder to reflash it with the OS of your choice.

This would tie in nicely to existing library systems. As a plus, if your account ever gets stolen or if you're old and don't understand this whole technology thing, you can talk to a real person. Like the concept of web of trust.

One big reason Nim never really caught on is because we've got lots of fast-ish languages with garbage collection (like Go, which sucks a lot of oxygen away from Nim IMO). Rust introduced a new concept to the mainstream that lets you program safely without a runtime hit for garbage collection.

It's 100% clear that Reddit is trying to kill off third party apps completely so that they can facefuck you with ads and other garbage. The Apollo dev saw the writing on the wall. I can't blame other app devs for trying to squeeze a bit more livelihood out of this, but hopefully they've realized that they need to move on asap. In the end, it's a great reminder to not build your business on someone else's platform, even if they're "cool".

You might like Total Annihilation and its modern descendants, like BAR or Zero K. There's still some micro depending on the variant, but the focus is much more heavily on macro, along with making the units smarter.

Apart from that, the Civ games are turn-based, but scratch a similar itch as RTS games

I'll be honest, I have no idea. Sometimes, I get nagged that a package is insecure, and it seems reasonable like an old version of Electron, and then I just sigh and add it to my list of packages to ignore that warning on.

Trust is a broad term. If you're paranoid, find the package you care about here, and read every line:

    https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs

If you're slightly less paranoid, check the git blame logs for anyone that's touched a package you care about. If you trust all of them, then you're good.

If you're less paranoid than that, assume that someone reasonable is in charge of that repo. You'll get warnings about insecure packages. I've had to Ok a few insecure packages in my configuration.nix, because I assume the packagers are reasonable people. I may yet find out I've made a mistake.

Broadly speaking, I think it's the same model as any other distro. Debian for example has volunteers that package stuff. You can go through the same process above and decide how paranoid you want to be for that as well.

Not quite spec fic, more straight sci fi, but The Culture series is generally kind of utopian. The base suspension of disbelief for the series is that superhuman AI decides "hey, these meatsacks are alright", and keeps them around. In-universe, living in The Culture is straight utopia, where you want for nothing. The books tend to focus on the edges of The Culture, i.e. where it interacts with other civilizations, IMO because it's hard to tell a story where there isn't really any conflict and everyone's happy.

If that interests you at all, here's a quick read where the author writes about the background for the series:

    http://www.vavatch.co.uk/books/banks/cultnote.htm

Like I said, the suspension of disbelief is that superhuman AI decides humans are alright. If you grant it that, I think it's a pretty realistic take on what follows from that premise.

I wonder how hard it will be to just scrape the HTML to accomplish this. It'd be a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, but you'd probably get pretty far just using Google's user agent string. I kind of think Reddit wouldn't actually care about scraping vs API access, since all of Reddit's dumbfuckery seems to be coming from spez panicking due to investor pressure, and I'd bet investors don't have the faintest idea what "scraping" is.
