Incase you didn't know, Rwanda was for settled claims, not processing.
As in, they would be sent to Rwanda if they were successful in their asylum claim.
Processing asylum seekers in a country they are already in, like Albania, is significantly safer than forcing them to get in a dingy.
Now if we are taking people out of dingys in the channel, and taking them to Albania, then yes fuck that absolutely.

A full itemised breakdown is a different level of rigor than a "to the closest billion, what's going on?" request made civil servants as part of an incoming government. Given the statements made by the OBR themselves the idea that 22bn is inaccurate or false is pure cope.
Also, the FT not actually linking to their FOI request means you cannot see exactly what they requested, and a high level of detail could well lead to other disclosure problems (eg if overspend occurs in front line military).
hellothere 1 week ago • 94%
Good to see the FT continuing to absolutely destroy their credibility:
The response from the Treasury’s information rights unit said details would be published respecting agreed timelines “to allow the relevant officials time to complete the preparation of the information to ensure it is accurate and correct prior to publication”.
[...]
A spokesperson added the Treasury intends to provide more details of the overspending, either at the Budget or in separate spending releases.
Not exactly sure how this can be considered a refusal....hmmmmm.

Respectfully, I didn't ignore the rest of what you said.
I agree that representatives need to explain to the electorate why they are best placed to elect them for what comes ahead.
But the key point is that we don't actually know what comes ahead. They have a manifesto, etc, but there will always be unforeseen circumstances which arise.
In those moments in a representative democracy the representatives make the decisions. Your vote for them has allowed you to have your person at the table, but they don't need to consult with the electorate again.
If they do, you're moving towards direct democracy.
There are good arguments why governments should look to keep the electorate informed, explain actions, and justify decisions, but the popularity of a measure shouldn't be the sole factor.
hellothere 1 week ago • 33%
Simple fact, if an opinion is popular. Completely ignoring it is anti-democratic.
This is an incredibly simplistic definition which describes delegates, not representatives.
A delegate must do what they are instructed - think of them as your hands - whereas a representative is someone who makes decisions on your behalf - a second brain.
Delegates are extremely susceptible to tyranny of the majority, whereas representatives - in theory - seek to balance actions across all the people they represent, as well as their expertise and knowledge.
Populism is that thing your mum was on about where if your friends all jumped off a cliff, would you?
It might absolutely be the right decision, depending on the context, but if it isn't then you shouldn't do the wrong thing just because it's popular.

Do I agree with the bar being set at being in receipt of pension credit? Fuck no, that's far too low given you're talking about a scenario where pensioners have less than 10k/yr and would be spending over 10% of their money on heating.
But, pensioners with a full state pension, and a private / workplace pension on top, sitting in a big house they bought in the 80s to raise a family in, all of whom have since moved out, and is now worth several hundreds of thousands of pounds, really don't need the extra cash.
So there should be a cut off, but not where it currently is. Ultimately, this shows the state pension is still too low if an extra payment is required so people don't freeze. If the state pension was higher, to the point this payment wasn't needed, then I think it would be a sensible place to put the limit, because pensioners with extra income (like private or workplace pensions) fundamentally shouldn't need it, because the state pension should be the base line.
I'm fully expecting a level of wealth taxing to be announced in the budget - it really isn't something you want to leak before hand because the ultra wealthy will move their money elsewhere, cos they're parasites - but if Reeves doesn't bring one in, then she and Starmer are going to have a very tough time.

Am on the way back home after All In, my thoughts as follows:
- First and foremost I had a really good time. Pretty much everyone was super friendly and chill, a bunch of people had dressed up, and there were very few dickheads. In the boxpark earlier in the afternoon the DJ had an entrance music playlist, which was pretty much all WWE themes, but everyone was really positive and having a good time. Actual wrestling fans are not tribal dickheads.
- The only two bits of genuine pride I have in the UK is our ability to form a queue anywhere, and how loud our crowds are. I wasn't able to get a picture (because I don't like taking pictures in public with other people's faces visible) but all the queues leading in to the entrance ways were snakes with multiple turns, with no barriers. It was a thing of beauty.
- The faces got cheered, the heels got booed, and pretty much everyone got a big pop, and some of them you could actually feel the vibrations in your chest. Any ironic chants - like a few CM Punk ones - got drowned out very quickly.
- A couple of guys near us tried to start an En-ger-land chant during Ospreay vs MJF, and they got booed out immediately. The complete lack of nationalistic chants (except the cheeky booing of the USA during Martha's speech) is such a welcome departure from insipid USA! USA! nonsense.
- I'm still coming down from the dopamine high of Hayter's return 💪 and I'm so happy for Nigel.
- While The Learning Tree has been really fun, this programme has done nothing for Hook. Jericho really needs to take a 6 month break and come back in a reduced capacity. I'm sure there is a lot of value we don't see behind the curtain, but he just distracts from everyone else.
- We will always love Big Willy - be that Bill, Ospreay, Hobbs, Starkz, Gunn, Mack, or any others I've forgotten
- Having the TBS belt at the top end of the card, and the Women's so much lower, is bad from a pure kayefabe perspective. A few people mentioned in the live thread about it being a piss break match, but I cannot stress how easy it is to go for a piss in Wembley, I managed to get a pint and go to the loo between every second match, and only really missed the entrances, and the lines for the ladies toilets were even shorter. In short, there is not a need for piss break matches, and I can only assume it was there because of Mercedes' contract. Which is something TK needs to handle much better, because the crowd did not care at all.

Surely not?!
This match is for NORTH's Ultraviolent Championship, and is from last year's Thunderstruck event, which is the biggest crowd so far with ~700 attendees. If the venue looks familiar, it's because it's in the Walker Dome, where Impact/TNA held Turning Point last year.

This is from North's December show, and is absolutely incredible. Do yourself a favour and watch it.
🎶 Wheeler's got a gun 🎶
I'm so ridiculously hyped for this match, it's going to be incredible. Oku has been on the Jericho cruise this week, where he's beaten Mike Bailey, Johnny ~~TV~~ Cruise, and Matt Cardona to become to new Oceanic Champion. He's also the current RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship - the belt Ospreay made famous - although, as to being the undisputed title for all of Britain, well Slater (and everyone north of Watford) would have a thing or two to say about that.
I'll admit I have not watched the Rumble this year so I don't know for certain, but I'm posting this because it feels like a pretty even handed take from a self-confessed AEW mark. The last line - just because something isn't for me, doesn't mean it isn't for you - is very good advice.
This is the full show, with commentary, from a couple of weeks ago. The main event is Leon Slater vs Speedball Mike Bailey, and is incredible. It was a family friendly show so the crowd is a bit less sweary and drunk than usual, and there is also no bleeding. Card is as follows: - Rumble Match (lots of local unknown talent and trainees, might as well skip) - Tag Team Match: **Rampage Brown** & **Will Kroos** vs. **Reece & Rogan** - Singles Match: **Joe Hendry** vs. **Gene Munny** - Singles Match: **Rhio** vs. **Emersyn Jayne** - Six Man Tag Team Match: **Liam Slater, Natalie Sykes & Rory Coyle** vs. **Ace Matthews, Benji & Zeo Knox** - NORTH Title Match: **Leon Slater** (c) vs. **Mike Bailey**
In a singles match, if wrestler A gets disqualified, then wrestler B has no one to wrestle, so the match is over and they win. But with 3 (or more) wrestlers, wrestler B would still have wrestler C, etc, so the match could continue without wrestler A. So why doesn't it? I've never understood this, and would appreciate people's thoughts. (Pic barely related)
If you want to understand the current state of BritWres, there are few better places to start than NORTH. Running since 2016 in Newcastle upon Tyne - a city of 300k in the north east of England once described by Michael Cole as "a small mining community" - they are a great example of what I love about BritWres, small passionate companies looking to put on great matches and build the next generation of talent, in front of very loud and usually drunk crowds of a few hundred people. Speaking of drunk crowds, NORTH run their shows out of a small craft brewery - Anarchy Brew - and have their own beers as well. It's great. Anyway, the card is: - NORTH Tag Team Tournament First Round Match - **Natalie Sykes** & **Session Moth Martina** vs. **Che Monet** & **Visage** - NORTH Tag Team Tournament First Round Match - **Myles Kayman** & **Vusyk** vs. **Sunshine Machine** (Chuck Mambo & TK Cooper) - **Man Like DeReiss** vs. **Emersyn Jayne** - **Gene Munny** & **Kid Lykos II** vs. **Grizzled Young Veterans** (James Drake & Zack Gibson) - **Lana Austin** vs. **Eve Bateman** - NORTH Tag Team Tournament First Round Match - **Landed Gentry** (Benji & Zeo Knox) vs. **Act Two** (Benjamin Harland & Jack Knudsen) - NORTH Title Match - **Leon Slater** (c) vs. **Rhio** If you only have time to watch one match make it the main event. Video package starts at 2h14m20s, do yourself a favour and watch from there.
I think this is a very fair review of Full Gear 2023, absolutely agree that Hangman vs Swerve is one of the best matches AEW have ever done.
> It’s midnight on the edge of Clapham Common in early September. The streets are eerily quiet as a shadowy figure in black shirt, shorts and baseball cap emerges from the common. He is wearing a red face mask, his features, except for some blond locks, hidden from view.
> Petrified fucking terror. That's the first thing you think when you look at Labour. A barely-concealed, buttoned-up, can't-sleep-at-night anxiety, lurking just behind the eyes. They're scared they'll fluff it. They're scared that in the white heat of the election campaign, the Tories will find some policy in their manifesto to weaponise against them and the whole thing will come crashing down.
