The cheap final price is through South Korean government subsidies. It's clear, the only way to compete with the Chinese manufacturer prices is through government subsidies.
Hyundai’s electric vehicles are becoming more affordable in Korea. Hyundai unveiled new E-Value + trims for the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and Kona EVs in its home market. The cheaper Hyundai EVs use the same battery as the standard models and start at around $22,500 with incentives.
The starting price for the Kona Electric E-Value trim is $31,000 (41.42 million won), while the lower-priced IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 models start at $35,200 (47 million won) and $35,190 (46.95 million won), respectively.
Hyundai said with government incentives, the actual purchase price is expected to be in the $22,500 (30 million won) range.
Will Hyundai launch cheaper trims for EVs in the US? With US production starting later this year, it’s a possibility. But then again, Hyundai already has some of the most affordable EVs on the market.
The 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric starts at $32,675, while the 2024 IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 models start at $41,800 and $37,500, respectively. Hyundai is also passing the $7,500 tax credit on through leasing, dropping prices even lower.

Copying the text from Pixelfed below:
zhang.dianli I used my first #FountainPen when I was 9 years old. I switched to using fountain pens for the bulk of my writing in my mid-20s. Today I almost exclusively use fountain pens for everything but the increasingly rare situation of having to write on copying paper. (I also occasionally use #DipPens for actual writing, but not as a rule.)
Coming to #China was like coming into fountain pen heaven for me. Everything was done with fountain pens here, so fountain pens were plentiful, highly varied, and generally cheap to buy, even while being very nice pens: not for decorative use like overpriced Montblancs (which are shockingly bad for actually writing with!), but for actual, day-to-day writing tasks.
Yesterday I got this set of four. They're super-elegant in design. The barrels are 100% wood. The brass adapter at the end of the barrel is machined brass into which the section screws internally and onto which the cap screws externally. The section, too, is made of machined brass and accepts one of the more common feeds into which an internationally common reservoir or cartridge can be fitted. (The feed and reservoir are the only plastic components on the entire pen.) The nib is iridium-tipped but is otherwise likely stainless steel. (I'm not sure what the gold trim is made of, but it doesn't look like actual gold to me.) The final components, the cap and clip, are made of machined brass and stamped, electroplated stainless steel respectively.
The pens have a respectable mass, look good, and cost the equivalent of about 9 US dollars. Not each. Total. After shipping.
I told you. Fountain pen heaven!

This seems to validate Terraform's approach of synthesizing hydrocarbons from PV power sources where there's more distance between the production of PV power and it's use. I hope they can figure out methenol synthesis instead of methane for this purpose.

This article is commentary on an article from Yahoo finance which stated:
New data from analytics firm CivicScience shows Tesla’s favorability among Democrats has dropped to 16% as of July 16, compared to 39% in January. Among Republicans, the data shows favorability decreased to 23% from 36% in the same time period.
The yahoo article is mostly commentary around that statement and speculation about Trump removing EV and Solar tax credits in the US.

That's certainly relevant context for wanting more range, but even with 80% degradation of a battery originally rated for a 240 mile range, you wouldn't need to spend much time charging at the intermediate destination before returning home to make the round trip with plenty of range to spare in each direction.
But I get it, people who regularly drive longer distances will want more range, that makes sense. My original pount is that many people don't and they could be paying a lot more for what they're not actually using. This is especially true for families with multiple vehicles.
ericjmorey 1 month ago • 100%
I'm hearing from a lot of owners that range isn't as big a deal they initially thought it was. Many say that they never drove 200 miles on a charge during their ownership of rhe EV. I'm sure that's very context dependent, but it got me thinking about why I'd need 300 miles on a charge and I'm not sure if I have a good answer.

Platinum Preppy fine point (0.3mm) for scale. I found these thread-bound kraft paper covered travelers' notebooks in A6 Size with grid lined pages for a good price that had good reviews with pictures from fountain pen users on Amazon. [$7] I figured at those prices, even if they aren't the greatest, they'd be a step up from the thin weight randomly acquired notebooks I've been using. With ballpoint and gel pens, I never really considered the paper quality for my notetaking and journaling. Side note: Not sure if I'm going to eyedropper convert the Preppy. I might buy another one or two with a different ink color and then convert a few at the same time.

China is heavily subsidizing the EV market enabling more to be early adopters domesticly. Americans are not refusing EVs, they're making financial decisions based on the environment they live in. Electric transportation is not a good financial decision for most people in the US right now. Hopefully that changes with some more government projects and subsidies.
ericjmorey 1 month ago • 100%
This demand reduction is great for those without the means to be early adaptors of electrification of transportation. The faster that wealthy people curtail their burning of fossil fuels at disproportionate rates, the better off poor people are to meet their day to day transportation needs.

A tech service named Clerk put together a nice breakdown of how Passkeys work on a technical level. I've found many other explanations too focused on technical definitions rather than a conceptional overview or so simplistic they were unhelpful for me. This one feels like a nice balance between not enough information and too much. The article is broken down into the sections below: >- What are passkeys? >- How does public key crypto work? >- A practical use of public-key cryptography >- How are passkeys more secure than a username and password? >- Clerk supports passkeys [this last section is irrelevant to anyone not interested in the service provided by Clerk] Clerk provides some sort of user management service; I don't know nor care if it's any good.

I was looking into it after I posted a question earlier, and found this very thorough description of the Platinum Preppy line of products. Much better presentation compared to the Platinum website or the Platinum US distributor website (which has information about a different product line on the preppy page).
I've never owned or used a fountain pen before, but I saw that these are less than $6 a piece and refill cartridges look pretty cheap too. Are these worth buying for a first timer or are they an invitation to a souring experience for a noob?

> The New Jersey Devils have certainly not met their sky-high expectations this season. As it stands, they sit fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 19-13-2 — which, while sturdy in a vacuum, just isn’t cutting it in a stacked division. They sit in the second wild card spot, and with games at hand, they likely find themselves in a comfortable playoff spot soon. Still, the Devils entered 2023-24 as a favorite to win the Stanley Cup, and the team’s record simply does not match those expectations. > > While the team has struggled to play up to the level they did last season, there’s an argument to be made that their record is less reflective of their play than it is on the schedule. A few weeks ago, the NHL finally unleashed its long-awaited player tracking data onto the public. Now it’s time to dissect what it all means. Sometimes, all it means is “that’s cool!” — and that’s OK. Sometimes a fun little tidbit is all a stat has to be. But it’s still worth looking into how meaningful all the new numbers are and what bucket they fall into: relevant info or interesting trivia. Each new stat poses its own interesting questions worth answering and that’s the goal of this series; diving into the new data to see how much it matters.
