In Berlin? I've got a good-as-new 1010 Blackbox for sale

Hey folks, Thought I should post this here in case there are any Berlin people in need of a hyper compact sampler: https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/1010music-blackbox/2514729335-74-3477 I don't want to ship it because I prefer to keep it local and meet the people I'm selling to. I never have any issues this way as we meet, chat, share phone numbers, and the buyer knows where I live and how to get in touch if there's any issue at all. 😊👍

Partially because the Hapax has more generative stuff, but also the more expansive layout looks like it'll be even faster to work with

Welcome! Nice setup! I see you also have the incredible Pyramid Squarp 😊 I love it. In fact even considering upgrading to their newer sequencer.

I print and bind the manual for any hardware I buy. Whilst undoubtedly I can discover a lot of the functionality just from experience, there's usually some stuff that you discover from the manual that just isn't the sort of thing you find out by chance 😊

Never tried the MPC stuff though (beyond a day with the Force before it had disk streaming), so can't give any specific recommendations..

Cool. Also if you need funds towards hosting costs, I can manage a small monthly contribution.

I noticed the main Irish mastodon instance uses this - looks very interesting (perhaps longer term)

Let me know if you ever need help with server admin stuff. I'm not an expert, but did web dev for 15 years and still comfortable enough on the old Linux CLI.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the Maschine+

I have to sell my 1010music Blackbox first though..

Of course, you can, in theory, also sign up to an instance and then move to another instance. I know there are guides for this portability when it comes to Mastodon, but not sure how it works for things like Lemmy and BookWyrm.

I guess the only true way to be certain of things in the federated world is to run your own instance and connect to other instances. Ultimately I do plan to do this with a few things, primarily moving myself off Mastodon.social and onto my own self-install on my own domain, the goal being that I'd have no other users beyond accounts for each of my music monikers and a 'personal' one. I'd love to have a books.mydomain.com instance of BookWyrm too if I can muster the enthusiasm to set it up.

One thing I always found about reddit was that I never really absorbed who I was talking to or who was posting what. The user/OP takes a back-seat to the content, compared to the twitter/mastodon approach, where I always felt like I had a better idea who I was talking to - I guess because I'd chosen to follow those people.

Whilst I did learn piano for a few years, I've been so used to programming/sequencing/generating notes that keys feel like too much of a space sacrifice 😁 There are some times I do wish to have a two or three octaves mini keyboard for sketching out ideas, but that desire is so infrequent I never get around to buying something 😂

    Self-hosted photoblog options

Hey folks, I used to be semi active as a photoblogger and am tempted to get back into the habit. I ran an old self-hosted WordPress for years but I've been hunting around for any more modern alternatives (perhaps more specifically focused on photoblogging) and am not coming up with anything concrete. Any recommendations? I could be tempted into a third-party service option if it gave me a way to offer print sales on each photoblog post - but that would really just be a 'nice to have' Thanks!

    Maschine+ vs Akai Force

I've been spending quite a bit of time considering this. I'm looking for something that will allow me to ditch the laptop when playing live shows, but that is also useful in my hybrid hardware/software studio setup. Given that I work in my studio 99% of the time vs 1% of the time playing live shows, the ability of any tool to be an asset in the studio is naturally very important. I actually bought a 1010music blackbox with the thought that this would be my bridge for computer-less live shows, but I just don't use it in the studio as I have other tools that are far more effective than it (I'll immediately reach for the digitakt instead of the Blackbox). I haven't even had a live show since I bought the Blackbox a year ago so it's basically been useless, and I'm suspecting that it might be fairly limited in a 'ableton live replacement' during a live show. As far as live shows go, since I got into hardware my usual approach was using Ableton Live to play stems from released tracks, and effectively jam over the top of those with hardware, occasionally using some effects in Ableton. From what I can tell the Akai Force would be a better option for Live shows, but the Maschine+ might actually be better suited to the studio. The Force would probably win for live shows simply because it's got that whole scene launching workflow that I'm accustomed to from Ableton Live, plus, crucially, it now offers disk streaming, which the Maschine+ does not. Under my Dronal moniker I'd like the option to play fairly long form field recordings as backing tracks, as well as potentially using some long form slowly modulating pad stems and then jamming over the top of these. But I think the Maschine+ would win out in the studio primarily because it would allow me to load the Maschine VST into Studio One and it would run in controller mode and give me separate outputs directly into Studio One - so it would be easy to integrate into my current workflow. Unless I'm mistaken, there's nothing in the Force that would work in this way - I'd need to export wavs from the force and import them into Studio One. But I'm just not sure that the Maschine+ would give me as good a live performance capability.

What about artist specific communities? My most visited subreddit was always the Autechre one. You happy to see that sort of thing pop up here too?

I've been impressed to see the amount of development they've put into the Force. I bought one and returned it way back in 2019 when I realised it didn't do disk streaming, but I see they've added that and a lot more since. They definitely seem committed to expanding its functionality at least.
