Most content (excluding their own) is not available in all regions due to licensing issues.

Actually, even including their own for some dumb reason. For instance, Paramount holds the rights to Star Trek, but there's no way for me to stream some of the shows legally, because Paramount+ isn't available where I live.

Which to me makes no sense. It's just a freaking website, globally accessible, hosting content they own...

I have a Google Alert set up, so I get notified in case my name pops up on the web. A month after I joined a new company, I got an alert - turned out that their internal directory page was exposed to the public web. I was pretty livid - all this time I was proud of maintaining good anonymity, looking up my name never returned anything meaningful on Google. So I complained to my boss about this, and he said it was actually a bug/misconfiguration - which they were already aware of, but didn't bother fixing it because no one complained. I was super pissed and made it very clear that it was a violation of my privacy and I wanted it taken down ASAP. Thankfully my boss was understanding and got it fixed. Then I had to report the page to Google. It took a while, but it was finally gone from the search results.

IT guy here, the NFC thing isn't really a concern (NFC doesn't work that way) or for that matter, any other wireless technology, as it'll need to authenticate with your phone somehow. If you can somehow simply scan data from a phone without any form of authentication, that would be a massive security hole - something that would be patched by the vendors real quick. Also, if something like that were possible then the TSA/FBI wouldn't have any issues pulling data from locked phones. Think of all the times you've had to put your phone thru the xray machines at the airports. Also see the case of FBI vs Apple for instance.

The other issues you've mentioned are valid though. Heck my Galaxy Fold won't even fit in that slot.

I mean, this goes beyond sewing and microfiber to all synthetics containing plastic: that includes materials like polyester, nylon, acrylic etc. I would personally recommend avoiding ALL plastics as much as you can, when it involves your food (so no plastic containers, food processor jars etc) and of course, avoid clothes made from these materials completely.

At the very least, you should avoid tops and bedding/blankets/pillows made from synthetics, to reduce the amount of microplastics you're breathing in to your lungs. Microplastics/nanoplastics are pretty much everywhere now and they're known to cross your blood-brain barrier, cause inflammation and can even cause cancer. We're in too deep to avoid it completely now, but we can certainly try and reduce our exposure to it.

Have you tried installing MTGO using Lutris? Apparently it works fine, but you'll need some tweaks. The key is to use windowed mode, disable music and card animations:

Runner options: -Use the latest version of lutri-proton if it's not the default. -Use windowed (virtual desktop) mode and the display resolution of whatever device you are playing on. This was the biggest fix of most problems for me with stuff related to proper rendering of windows. -All else is default from Lutris install

System options: -Uncheck restrict number of cores -Disable desktop effects -All else is default from Lutris install

In-game options: -Disable or silence music and Uncheck play client startup music -Disable card animations(summoning sickness and foil treatment)

I've also found that it is always better to close the program using the Stop button on Lutris, there's a bug where sometimes if you close out of the game via the Close button in the window, it will not properly stop the game, and will prevent starting the game back up again. I also tend to start the game in Lutris instead of via a desktop shortcut.

In my experience (W11 + Fedora on UEFI Thinkpad), I've seen it actually get rid of the Fedora entry from the UEFI boot list. Reinstalling GRUB from chroot didn't fix it, so I used EasyUEFI and manually added the Fedora EFI file to the boot list and that worked.

So it wasn't simply changing the boot order, it actually nuked Fedora from the UEFI boot list.

Just upgraded my M1 Air, loving the new animated wallpapers and lock screen.

My only pet peeve is that the offline phase of the upgrade took a whole 20 minutes - something which no other OS requires - yes, even for Windows, the offline phase of an upgrade is usually in single digits.

So this is something Apple definitely needs to improve upon.

    • Fedora KDE plans to drop the Plasma X11 session, in favor of Wayland

    • Because X11 is bloated, insecure, and in a development freeze since many years.

    • Wayland is simple, secure, minimal; developed by former X11 devs.

    • Challenges:

    • Wayland's minimal core protocols lacked essential features.

    • Fragmentation in development efforts occurred.

    • Protocol approval was political and time-consuming.

    • Current State:

    • Standard protocols for most requirements are now available.

    • Plasma and KDE apps run well on Wayland with the upcoming Plasma 6 release.

    • Many 3rd-party apps work via the XWayland compatibility layer, but some need to be ported to Wayland.

    • Conclusion:

    • Fedora aims to drop the Plasma X11 session entirely, if you don't like it then switch disros.

    • Many 3rd-party apps are already Wayland-ready, but many are not, and collaboration is needed to expedite this transition.

I actually use a Galaxy Tab S8 and haven't experienced any of the issues the parent poster mentioned. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU is pretty fast and in fact, it's one of the reasons why I bought it, because I use my tab mainly for emulation / gaming. I emulate consoles like the Nintendo Gamecube, Dreamcast and even the Switch, and it handles all of it very well. I also use it for cloud gaming (xCloud) and have no issues with the WiFi cutting off or anything, nor any latency issues.

One thing I have to admit though is that I'm not a fan of the Samsung bloatware, so the first thing I did after getting my tab is running Universal Android Debloater and getting rid of all the junk like Bixby. Once I did that and switched to a custom launcher, the tab was a pleasant experience. One of the Samsung features I actually enjoy is multitasking, the fact that you can have multiple floating windows and a taskbar gives it a more like a desktop-like experience, and makes it far more useful (for multitaskers) compared to stock-ish Android devices like the OnePlus. Also, Samsung has the DeX mode, which allows you to hook up an external monitor/keyboard/mouse and turn it into a full desktop experience, if you ever need that.

I'm afraid your info is a bit out-of-date. Firstly, most Chromebook are pretty useful even offline these days - most importantly, you can create and edit documents offline, which is the primary use-case for OP's partner. Second, you don't need to root a Chromebook any more to install Linux - installing Linux is literally just 4 clicks (Settings > Advanced > Developers > Linux), which would then install Debian in less than 10 minutes.

Edit: Also, Google just announced that they're extending the support for Chromebooks to 10 years now: https://www.zdnet.com/article/google-extends-chromebook-lifespan-to-ten-years/

For those out of the loop, some AMD users have been suffering from stuttering issues caused by the AMD fTPM random number generator. A firmware/BIOS update appears to fix the issue for some users, but not others, leading to more bug reports being sent in. Last week, Linus Torvalds said "let's just disable the stupid fTPM hwrnd thing", and, as of today the Linux kernel has gone ahead and blanket disabled RNG use for all current AMD fTPMs.

India joins rush to renewables, but its rural solar systems fall off grid https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/07/31/india-solar-energy/

A cautionary tale for a world racing into renewables: The large majority of mini-grids in India no longer work, an environmental group found. About 4,000 solar mini-grids have been installed in India, of which 3,300 are government financed and owned. Only 5% of the government grids are operational.

Amazon's Amp is now available on Android play.google.com

Last spring, Amazon launched its live audio-streaming platform, Amp, which aims to reinvent radio with “an infinite dial of shows.” Amp offers users access to a vast, built-in music library to create their own DJ sets with. No need to buy songs or flirt with the DMCA, just make a playlist, go live, talk in between tracks, follow the chat and even invite callers. A little over a year later, Amp is finally available on Android.

[POLL] Do you like the Galaxy Fold's narrow front screen? https://strawpoll.com/X3nk4BlGzgE

I've seen comments claiming most people would like to have a wider front screen, but I wonder if this is really the case, so thought I'd create a poll to get some actual numbers.

    [Feature Request] Dark Splash Screen

It's nice that Voyager has dark mode, but if I open it at night, in a dark room, the white splash screen blinds my eyes, even if it's visible only for a short duration. Therefore, I'd like the splash screen to be a dark themed one, if dark mode is enabled.

Now that everyone hates Red Hat, what's a good alternative to RHCSA/RHCE?

"Good" as in something that looks just as good as an RH cert on my CV. I was considering LFCS, but I haven't come across any job listings mention LFCS (at least, not where I live).

[META] Are we allowed to discuss manhwas and manhuas here?

r/Manga on Reddit allowed it, but I don't see anything mentioned in the sidebar here about what's allowed and what's not.
