wow.. then when I posted the above thread, it responded with “This page isn’t working” and looked like an error msg that was generated by the browser itself. So I reposted. Same thing. Then I discovered that it posted despite the error. So then I deleted the dupe.

    Error when voting

I tried to upvote this comment: https://fedia.io/m/Brussels/t/1145402/Delhaize-and-Intermarche-loyalty-more-intrusive-than-Colruyt-but-Colruyt/comment/7061005#entry-comment-7061005 Got a page that simply said “Error”. That’s it. Not internal server error or a 500 error.. just “error”. Thought it’s worth mention since it’s possibly the first time I've seen such a generic and info-deprived error msg.

the privacy policy for kbin.earth is just empty for me, on Ungoogled Chromium. I get the page title in large bold, but then an empty box below it despite enabling some foreign 3rd party JS (jwr.one).

But I must say, something like Cloudflare should not be buried in a privacy policy. It should be something that no one misses especially if Tor is whitelisted. A lot of Tor users likely rely on CF’s “just one moment..” page to know it’s a CF page (a mitm we usually want to avoid).

Thanks for the insights. I was looking for a client not a server. So maybe this can’t help me. A server somewhat hints that it would be bandwidth heavy. I’m looking to escape the stock JS web client. At the same time, I am on a very limited uplink. To give an idea, I browse web with images disabled because they would suck my quota dry.

    installation instructions needed

The readme talks about docker. I’m not a docker user. I did a `git clone` when I was on a decent connection. ATM I’m not on a decent connection. The **releases** page lacks file sizes. And MS Github conceals the size: ``` curl -LI 'https://github.com/Xyphyn/photon/archive/refs/tags/v1.31.2-fix.1.tar.gz' | grep -i 'content-length' ``` output: > content-length: 0 So instead of fetching the tarball of unknown size, I need to know how to build either the app or the tarball from the cloned repo. Is that documented anywhere?

Photon is a strange beast. How do you install it?

It seems to only come as a docker container. That’s weird. I don’t have docker installed but docker should really be a choice.. not a sole means of installation. I see no deb file or tarball. It seems that it has taken a direction that makes it non-conducive to ever becoming part of the official Debian repos.

Then it seems as well that their official site “phtn.app” is a Cloudflare site -- which is a terrible sign. It shows that the devs are out of touch with digital rights, decentralisation, and privacy. That doesn’t in itself mean the app is bad but the tool is looking quite sketchy so far. Several red flags here.

(edit) I found a tarball on the releases page.

I noticed that when I visit my profile page (https://fedia.io/u/ciferecaNinjo) while logged out, I get a 504 gateway error, but if I login then my profile page renders fine. It has been this way the past few days. If I view my profile from a logged-out browser while logged in in another browser, the logged out browser sees the profile fine. So to reproduce it would be interesting to visit anyone’s profile who is logged out.

I just need to work out exactly what the effect of the user-configured node block is. In principle, if an LW user replies to either my thread or one of my comments in someone else’s thread, I would still want to see their comments and I would still want a notification. But I would want all LW-hosted threads to be hidden in timelines and search results.

On one occasion I commented in an LW-hosted thread without realising it. Then I later blocked the community that thread was in (forgetting about my past comment). Then at one point I discovered someone replied to me and I did not get the notification. That scenario should be quite rare but I wonder how it would pan out with the node-wide blocking option.

Onion hosts are not recognized as URLs and thus get funny treatment. fedia.io

As the linked post demonstrates, if you enter a link like this: ``` [mail2tor](mail2torjgmxgexntbrmhvgluavhj7ouul5yar6ylbvjkxwqf6ixkwyd.onion) ``` mbin thinks it’s something else. Indeed it’s not a URL due to the lacking ‘scheme://’, but it’s bizarre what it does with the links. Since SSL is not generally needed for onions, every link would require some effort to know whether it should have a scheme of `http://` or `https://`. Mbin should just pick one of those schemes arbitrarily.. certainly not whatever it’s doing at the moment.

Ah, I see! Found it. Indeed that was not there last time I checked.

I’m on both Lemmy and mbin. I have several Lemmy accounts.

Now I need to understand the consequences of blocking lemmy.world. Is it just the same as blocking every lemmy.world community, or does it go further than that? E.g. If I post a thread and a LW user replies, I would not want to block their reply from appearing in my notifications. I just don’t want LW threads coming up in searches or appearing on timelines.

I don't get why you want users to be able to apply cloudflare filters, though.

Suppose an instance has these users:

    • Victor who uses a VPN
    • Cindy whose ISP uses a CGNAT (she may or may not be aware of the consequences of that)
    • Terry who uses a Tor
    • Norm who uses the normal clearnet
    • Esther who is ethical (doesn’t matter what she uses)

And suppose the instance is a special interest instance focused on travel. The diverse group of the above people have one thing in common: they want to converge on the expat travel node and the admin wants to accommodate all of them. Norm, and many like him, are happy to subscribe to countless exclusive and centralised forums as they are pragmatic people with no thought about tech ethics. These subscriptions flood an otherwise free world node with exclusive content. Norm subscribes to !travelpics@exclusivenode.com. Then Victor, Terry and sometimes Cindy are all seeing broken pics in their view because they are excluded by Cloudflare Inc. Esther is annoyed from an ethical standpoint that this decentralised free world venue is being polluted by exclusive content from places like like Facebook Threads™ and LemmyWorld. Even though she can interact with it from her clearnet position, she morally objects to feeding content to oppressive services.

The blunt choice of the admin to federate or not with LemmyWorld means the admin cannot satisfy everyone. It’s too blunt of an instrument. Per-community blocks per user give precision but it’s a non-stop tedious manual workload to keep up with the flood of LW communities. It would be useful for a user to block all of LemmyWorld in one action. I don’t want to see LW-hosted threads and I don’t want LW forums cluttering search results.

Cloudflare is an exclusive walled garden that excludes several demographics of people. I am in Cloudflare’s excluded group. This means:

    • when an LW user posts an image, I am blocked from seeing it. Images do not get mirrored onto the federated nodes.
    • when I encounter an LW community with very little content and I then need to visit the LW host to see what’s there before deciding whether to subscribe, I am blocked. I can only see content that got mirrored into the local timeline. There are various circumstances where visiting the source host is necessary but Cloudflare ruins that option.

CF nodes like LW breaks the fedi in arbitrary ways that undermine the fedi design and philosophy. So the use case is to get rid of the pollution. To get broken pieces out of sight and unbury the content that is decentralised, inclusive, open and free. To reach conversations with people who have the same values and who oppose digital exclusion, oppose centralised corporate control, and who embrace privacy. It’s also necessary to de-pollute searches. If I search for “privacy”, the results are flooded with content from people and nodes that are antithetical to privacy. Blocking fixes that. If I take a couple min. to block oxymoron venues like lemmy.world/c/privacy and do the same for a dozen other cloudflared nodes, then search for “privacy” again, I get better results.

When crossposting from Lemmy, there is a pulldown list of target communities which is another search tool. That is broken when there are more communities than what fits in the box. And it’s often ram-packed with Cloudflare venues -- places that digital rights proponents will not feed. Blocking the junk CF-centralised communities makes it possible to select the target community I’m after.

So it works. The federated timeline is also more interesting now because it’s decluttered of exclusive places. The problem is that it’s more tedious that it needs to be. I am blocking hundreds of LW communities right now. It probably required 500 clicks to get the config that I have right now and I probably have hundreds of more clicks to go. When in fact I should have simply been able to enter ~10 or nodes.

    tl;dr:

    • Lemmy ← shit show for years
    • (mk)bin ← shit show but understandable given its age
    • piefed ← never heard of it

I’ve been using Lemmy for years, back when there were only 2 or 3 nodes and federation capability did not exist. It’s a shit show. Extremely buggy web clients and no useful proper desktop clients. I must say it’s sensible that the version numbers are still 0.x. It’s also getting worse. 0.19.3 was more usable than 0.19.5 which introduced serious bugs that make it unusable in some variants of Chromium browser.

mBin has been plagued with serious bugs. But it’s also very young. It was not ready for prime-time when it got rolled out, but I think it (or kbin) was pushed out early because many Redditors were jumping ship and those refugees needed a place to go. IMO mbin will out-pace Lemmy and take the lead. Mbin is bad at searching. You can search for mags that are already federated but if a community does not appear in a search I’m not even sure if or how a user can create the federated relationship.

The running goat fuck with Lemmy is in recent years with the shitty javascript web client. There’s only so much blame you can fairly put on those devs though because they need to focus on a working server. The shitty JavaScript web client should just be considered a proof-of-concept experimental test sandbox. JavaScript is unfit for this kind of purpose. It’s really on the FOSS community to produce a decent proper client. And what has happened is there has been focus on a dozen or so different phone apps (wtf?) and no real effort on a desktop app.

    Cloudflare filters lacking

Both Lemmy and Mbin lack the ability to filter out or block Cloudflare nodes. They both only give a way to block specific forums. So you get imersed/swamped in LemmyWorld’s walled garden and to get LemmyWorld out of sight there is a big manual effort of blocking hundreds of communities. It’s a never ending game of whack-a-mole.

Yes indeed.. “threads” in the generic sense of the word pre-dates the web. And threadiverse is a few years older than “FB Threads™”. That’s what’s so despicable about Facebook hi-jacking the name. It’s also why I will not refer to them by Meta (another hi-jacking of a generic term with useful meaning that their ego-centric marketers fucked up)

It’s good news just considering that Peter #Thiel is a stakeholding¹ cofounder of airbnb. This is the same motherfucker who got Trump into power in 2016 by using Cambridge Analytica, Facebook and Thiel’s dark money contributions -- which more recently got JD Vance into power. Also the same xenophobic scumbag motherfucker behind Palantir. The same piece of shit who cofounded PayPal (a surveillance capitalist). Thiel’s profits are detrimental to the world.

¹ to be clear he was a stakeholder ~10 years ago… not sure if that’s still the case.

This forum is strangely specific. Can we broaden it, or should a new magazine be formed?

Decisions about who to federate with can be so much more interesting than just talking specifically about Meta. And from where I sit, this mag is dead due to ~~being so narrowly focused.~~ (edit: moving to another node… that explains it). Consider that there are many nodes that are centralised and go against many digital rights values. E.g. all Cloudflare nodes are centralised and expose us all to corporate greed, manipulation, exclusion, and privacy abuses. I propose renaming to something like “DefederateTechGiants” or “DefederateTechnoFeudalism”.

Thanks for the insight; that’s quite helpful.

The concept of easements still exists in this area but it seems like easements are not being used for façades, which kind of makes sense. The dispute I’m getting into is over a telecom company that is not serving the whole public. They are discriminatory and exclusive. I consider it an injustice that they can arbitrarily drill into people’s houses to support a “public” service which they then exclude some people from access (including owners of the homes they are drilling). Property owners then have a burden of paying €10 per cable to give notice by registered letter to all telecoms using their façade whenever a homeowner wants to perform work on their own façade.

That’s why I am looking closely at this law. I found nothing in the law that requires telecoms to be inclusive.

Even weirder is this post itself. I posted this photo thread once, but two posts appeared in fedia discussions. I then opted to delete one of them, and the delete action on one deleted both of them. So I reposted again using the “add new photo” option, and again it created two threads.

The post in the snapshot was a case where I posted in https://fedia.io/m/Brussels and then posted a link to that thread from a sopuli community. The duplication in that case is apparently due to another anomaly. Or perhaps not.

(edit) interesting to note as well that this comment was not duplicated. So there is a parallel universe but without the contents therein being mirrored.

Also noteworthy: after deleting the thread it became non-existent to me, so I had no way to undelete it. Which means I had to re-upload the image to recreate the thread. Lemmy does better on this.. when you delete your own Lemmy thread, you can still undelete it.

What do you say? Am I too lazy or it is unpractical to stay away from big tech?

Laziness is what the surveillance advertisers are exploiting. It is everyone’s duty to resist the tyranny of convenience that Tim Wu articulates in a famous essay.

After a year I'm starting to think that maybe my data is not worth the hassle just to keep big tech out of my digital life.. I guess Big Brother wins

Think of it as boycotting. Exposure of your personal data may not be worth the effort of protecting it, but the big picture is that privacy seekers are not just looking for confidentiality. Privacy is about power and agency. You are exercising your right to boycott a harmful entity. Boycotts are no longer simply a matter of not handing money over, because data is worth money. So boycotting now entails not handing your data over. Giving Google your data feeds Google’s profits.

So you are really asking, “should I give up the boycott”? The answer is no, because the boycott is not just a duty to yourself; it’s a duty everyone benefits from (except Google).

Cloudflare is not at all sensible from a privacy standpoint. Cloudflare is a bigger privacy offender than Google and far more detrimental to our rights.

    https://git.kescher.at/dCF/deCloudflare/src/branch/master/subfiles/rapsheet.cloudflare.md

Reverse proxying your website through Cloudflare is actually an attack on privacy. You make yourself part of the problem by arbitrarily blocking several demographics of people from your website including Tor and VPN users (people doing their part to retain privacy).

    403 forbidden when DMing

I tried to DM a Lemmy user. This URL was associated to the mail icon: https://fedia.io/u/@Servais@discuss.tchncs.de/message That gives a 403 forbidden. I use Tor but neither fedia nor discuss.tchncs.de are tor-hostile. So I doubt Tor is related. I have to say apart from the above issue, fedia has been working smoothly lately. I’m glad the internal server errors that plagued the system have apparently been resolved AFAICT.

I’ve only been to Denmark but certainly concur with voting Denmark last.

    • society is designed to render people without a CPR № dysfuctional
      • could not check out a library book without CPR №
      • could not make a photo copy without CPR №
      • could not open a bank acct without CPR № (bank falsely advertised to expats the possibility to process paperwork before even arriving)
      • could not get student rate on trains until the CPR № was granted. Took a month to get the number, the clock of which only started ticking after finding a seemingly legitimate place to live. Not counting time sleeping in a classroom. No way to get the train fare difference back retroactively.
    • society is designed to render people without a bank account dysfuctional
      • many restaraunts refuse service to cash payers, including university campus snack shops
      • university events required electronic payments (someone has to use their personal bank acct to let cash payers participate)
      • someone could not simply do laundry
    • university e-mail outsourced to Microsoft, forcing everyone on campus to share their school-related email with a US surveillance capitalist
    • university itself used Facebook to announce events, thus excluding those who do not use FB
    • university forced 2FA on some academic resources, which then required SMS (thus denying students without a mobile phone or the will to share their number access to school resources)
    • university outsourced e-book service to a Cloudflare service (Proquest), who then blocks access to some demographics of people
    • banks themselves are cashless. If your ATM card fails because of some persnickety paperwork issue, you have no money access unless you visit a branch during opening hours, at which point a banker actually has to walk down the street to an ATM with you, carrying a special internal ATM card. So getting your own money out of your bank account is comparable to asking dad for money.
    • banks app can receive inbound international money, but cannot send outbound international transfers (only domestic)
    • housing crisis: the waiting list for an apartment is years; had to sleep illegally in a classroom and dodge night guards, or deal with lots of dodgy landlords exploiting the crisis. Had a landlord who was illegally subletting, who demanded cash payment (fine) but then refused to give a receipt.
    • severe shortage of on-campus dorms. Just enough to house foreign exchange students. All “dorms” for locals are scattered in private apartments. Getting one close to campus is a competition.
    • was denied a CPR № because the dwelling had more people than officially allowed on paper, despite some of the officially known people not actually living there.
    • expected this country with the world’s highest degree of income equality to be quite liberal, but the people & culture were ironically conservative. No concept of privacy.
    • cycling actually sucks. You might expect it to be the best place in the world for cycling, but the cycle paths are so popular they are like driving on a highway. Overcrowded. If you cruise along slowly a bicycle traffic jam becomes possible. Car driving stresses are there on the high traffic cycling lanes.

That’s just off the top of my head. The nannying is endless.

Can anyone confirm or deny whether many of these issues are replicated among Denmark’s neighbors?

No you haven't. Read your own source. Hint: biogas

biogas was used in 2009, not in 2020 when the stats were collected. Nor would it matter if it were still used. Hint: it would be an increase on the 80%.

recall: fuel energy → heat energy→ steam → turbine → transmission → heat energy

Also, nuclear fuel is not gas, so this speaks for electric stoves, silly.

    That’s fuel. That’s in the 80%.

again: fuel energy → heat energy→ steam → turbine → transmission → heat energy

    Ignoring other renewables

I have accounted for all the renewables mentioned in the linked wikipedia page, which covers sources as insignificant as hydro (<1%). What else is there? Have you thought about updating wikipedia with whatever you think is missing?

    Ignoring French nuclear imports

That would only increase the proportion of fuel energy even more, which only works against your botched claim. If you want to count French nuclear, then the portion of solar, wind, and hydro is proportionally even less. Brussels currently has a nuclear power plant inside the region. Why do you think it would it be sensible to transmit over such distance? That would introduce even more substantial inefficiency in the transmission.

Ignoring current state but talking about possible future plans

The status quo only has 1 year left on it. And nuclear power still has the same stages of energy transition loss you’ve failed to debunk. What’s the point? Your claim is nonsense either way.

Get your facts straight, or update Wikipedia to reflect your understanding:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_in_Belgium

    wind + solar + hydro → 20%

80% from burning fuels¹. With 3 new gas-burning plants under construction to replace nuclear, that’s not going to improve things.

Belgium is aiming to reduce its use of gas as much as possible.

Nonsense. I guess you missed the whole “Code Red” march against Electrabel last year protesting the plan to build 3 new gas-burning power plants.

there are two nuclear power plants, not one.

And that’s important why? From wikipedia:

“Belgium decided to phase out nuclear power generation completely by 2025.”

Whether there are 1, 2, or 5 nuclear plants is immaterial when it’s all being phased out, and replaced with gas-burning power plants.

Betting on gas, be it a stove or something else, is just stupid.

Betting in a way that neglects plans that have already been announced is stupid for sure.

¹ recall: fuel energy → heat energy→ steam → turbine → transmission → heat energy

Electricity is usually not made from fuel

    You’re generally wrong on that:

“Over 60% of global electricity generated so far in 2023 was produced by fossil fuels” --Reuters

Belgium is what’s relevant in the case at hand. In Belgium ~20% of power is from solar, wind, and hydro. The other 80% is from burning fuel. I group nuclear with fossil fuel because the nuclear power plant in Belgium is being decommissioned and will be replaced with 3 new gas burning plants.

Gas stoves are far inferior in this step, losing most of the heat into the surtounding air. Induction stoves have almost no transmission loss.

That’s true but that’s stoves not ovens. You’d have to exaggerate quite a bit to claim more than half of the heat energy is wasted on gas stoves or ovens.

In order to use gas in the kitchen, you have to have a gas pipe in the kitchen, which has become very unusual.

Where? Unusual Belgium-wide? The cities concentrate populations. Brussels city is mostly old homes likely all piped with gas judging from the dominance of gas boilers. Are you saying there are lots of old homes that did not bother to branch a gas pipe into the kitchen?

During construction, it's easier and cheaper to not lay gas pipes.

That’d be a false economy. Pipes are like ~€7 per meter so it would take ~1—2 years for the pipes to pay for themselves if they are used for daily cooking.

Most people do not have a choice – either you got an old house witha gas pipe in the kitchen or a newer one with a 400 V power outlet.

I do not have a 400V outlet. I have no idea how many electric ovens require that, do you? I’m using a crappy portable 220V oven. If the big properly insulated wall ovens are 400V, then I would have to run a new line to the fuse box. Not sure if I could wire that myself, which I assume involves bridging two 220V circuits.

I guess most people don’t do their own work. So you are implying hiring someone to add one or the other post-construction would be cost prohibitive. Sounds reasonable. But I’m not convinced kitchens lack gas pipes to begin with because gas stovetops are still popular in Belgium. Just not gas ovens.

(edit) In Brussels in 2011, “natural gas consumption was 10,480 GWh and the electricity consumption was 5,087 GWh”, according to Wikipedia.

I’m still waiting for someone to show me an induction oven. This is the same as saying “don’t use an oven at all”. Of course, if you don’t need an oven, then it would not make sense to install an oven at all.

It’s not an assumption. This is how power is produced in Belgium. There is only 1 nuclear power plant and it’s being decommissioned. 3 new fossil fuel burning power plants will be built.

If I were to open the boiler before and after using it just as I have a wood stove, that brief exposure to trace amounts of toxins once a day would not influence a choice to use it. That theory is quite far fetched.

The finding that gas stove toxins can be significant is also more recent than the popularity drop in gas ovens. IOW, to have a cause-effect, the cause must come chronologically before the effect.

(edit) also worth noting that gas stoves are still popular in Belgium, just not ovens. So this theory is bogus. People are not going to avoid ovens out of fear of toxins when the door opens while at the same time having no problem with gas stoves.

Why do you say that in the past tense? You can see from my figures that in Belgium gas is still cheaper.

This is something that varies from one region to another. In the US, some states have cheaper electric than gas. Electric is less efficient because of big losses in all the conversion steps:

fuel energy → heat energy→ steam → turbine → transmission → heat energy

    Gas simply has:

fuel energy → transmission → heat energy

It is important to note that gas transmission is also lossy due to the impossibility of leak-free main lines, but it’s still more efficient in the end. Thus in most of the world gas is also naturally cheaper due to the efficiency difference. It gets inverted in some regions because of pricing manipulations as well as the drive to promote green energy (and rightfully so -- social responsibility should be incentivized). And in some regions they cut down on the transmission losses by putting the power plant inside or close to the big city. But in Belgium gas is still cheaper than electric even despite Russia’s war and efforts to get off Russian fuels.

Poor venting is not inherent in the technology. A diligent installer can run a duct from the oven to the outside just like we do for gas boilers. A diligent building code can even make it mandatory. The lack of gas ovens (and selection thereof) in Belgium is not likely a consequence of concern for toxic gases, because if it were, then gas boilers (which burn far more fuel than an oven would) would be far less popular than they are. So what is your theory on that difference?

Still sounds like you’re talking about stoves. To use a stove, you inherently need to stand next to it and your face is between the flame and the vent. Ovens are well insulated (this is important for energy efficiency), they vent to the outside, and you are not generally standing over the oven throughout the baking.

That depends on how well vented they are. Most people undersize their range hoods for aesthetics and don’t take venting seriously. Of course recent findings show it’s a bad idea to cut corners on that with gas stoves, and ovens to some extent. But it’s mostly stoves that have the issue you describe.

Indeed. I wasn’t sure if tja was asking for alternatives for admins or users.

Sometimes the marginalized groups of users can circumvent Cloudflare by finding an archive.org mirror of the blocked page, but that does not always work (and if interactivity is needed it never works). There is a browser plugin which will detect when a user clicks on a Cloudflare link and automatically redirect to archive.org.

Most government deployed websites do not use Cloudflare. I don’t think they choose a different outsourced competitor; they likely insource admins who are proficient with web security.

Some admins use Cloudflare DNS but not the proxy. This enables them to be able to simply and quickly flip a switch on-the-fly when the load exceeds a threshhold. That can also be scripted to happen automatically. Then visitors are not burdened by Cloudflare most of the time. Some admins also know how to configure CF to not block indiscriminantly, but I think that control only available to whitelist the Tor network not the other groups who face discrimination.

Cloudflare is a walled garden that excludes people.

Many would say it’s fair enough if the private sector excludes people because people have an equal right to not patronize private businesses. But when a government has a human rights obligation to serve the whole public, it’s obviously an injustice for some demographics of people to be blocked from access to a public resource that was financed with public money.

Belgian law & EU law: /merchants/ must handle warranty service for 2 yrs, or more? fedia.io

The rumor I heard was that if you buy a product that fails before the warranty ends, you do not need to contact the manufacturer (in [#Belgium](https://fedia.io/tag/Belgium)). You can simply return the product to the merchant and the merchant must deal with the warranty service. A store manager refused to accept my return of a device that died after 2yrs+2 months, which was covered under a 3 year warranty. He said I must deal directly with the manufacturer. I threatened to complain officially and the manager gave in. But then as he was angrily returning money to me, he said he is only required to handle warranty service for the 1st two years and that he is making an exception for me. I figured he was confused because 2 years happens to be the length of the EU implied warranty. I had not heard that it was also a limit of the store’s obligation as an intermediary. To complicate matters, the product was marked down on liquidation because the store apparently severed ties with that manufacturer. Though I doubt that’s relevant to my situation because it would not void the warranty. But [the article](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/shopping/guarantees-returns/index_en.htm) also says merchants must accept returns *for any reason* in the first 14 days, yet the store makes that zero days for liquidated goods. Does that break EU law? Anyway, I need answers. Maybe I owe the manager a bottle of wine. The [EU article](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/shopping/guarantees-returns/index_en.htm) indeed confirms sellers must handle warranty returns for up to 2 years. But that’s EU-wide [#law](https://fedia.io/tag/law). What about [#Belgian](https://fedia.io/tag/Belgian) national law? Next question, out of curiousity: normally manufacturers have a choice whether to replace, repair or refund. Is that choice passed through to merchants? Or are merchants required to handle this with one instant transaction (thus no repair as the consumer would have to return to the store later)?

I was only there once or twice in off hours. I think I was there once on a Sunday (normally closed all day so only open to after hours members) and once in the evening. It was quiet as I recall but I guess I’ve not made use of it enough to have an idea. It’s not overly busy in the after hours.

W.r.t. alcohol, the rules forbid eating and drinking in the library, but water is exceptionally allowed. I don’t know if they review the video without cause, but if someone breaks the rules, their after-hours access is terminated.

In Brussels there is a library that’s “open” as late as 22:00. There’s an after hours program where you register for after hours access, sign an agreement, and your library card can be used to unlock the door. Staff is gone during off hours but cameras are on. Members are not allowed to enter with non-members (can’t let anyone tailgate you incl. your friends).

Bug: blocks have no effect on search-generated timelines

I’m blocking probably hundreds of mags (all mags on Cloudflare sites like lemmy.world). The results of search queries are rich in posts from blocked mags. When I visit the post the sidebar shows that indeed that mag is blocked. Note that if I simply browse the main timeline, the blocks work as expected. I would normally report this to the kbin bug tracker but Codeberg deleted my account and it’s hard to create a new one.

Do Blu-Ray images exist for Bookworm yet? Is this the best offline way?

I have a limited internet connection. So I will need to find internet cafes and grab whole damn thing (which is what, 100gb?) I think I saw 4 BDs for past releases, but I cannot find a mirror that has BDs for Bookworm. But perhaps I’m looking in the wrong place.. it’s often quite non-intuitive to navigate. I looked here: http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/bookworm/main/installer-amd64/current/images/ and here: http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/bookworm/main/binary-amd64/ The docs: https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/amd64/ch04s02.en.html#where-files I just see small files. No ISOs. I’m not just after the Debian system, but all official packages as well. In principle I would want an installer and a separate disk that is all DEB files, but IIRC the only way to easily get a full set is to get the BD ISOs.. maybe via torrent, not sure. I have no optical drive, so I guess I would put the ISOs on a drive and mount them. I know it’s theoretically possible to go through the list of apps I need and find out which CDs they are on, but I looked at just Libre Office and LaTeX and noticed the files for these packages were scattered all over the place. So it really seems impossibly complex and I get the impression I will likely need every single CD anyway.

When I try to DM someone on the jlai.lu lemmy instance, I get “403 Forbidden”. This is over Tor but doubt that’s relevant since jlai.lu permits tor, and most likely my msg takes this route: my PC → Fedia server → jlai.lu (server) That instance also seems to be federated with Fedia (users from there post on fedia mags). So for that reason I expect DMs to work.

Seeing lots of posts from centralized instances (e.g. lemmy.world)

I have ensured that I am not subscribed to any mags on centralized instances. E.g. * lemmy.world (centralized by Cloudflare and by disproportionate user count) * lemmy.ml (centralized by disproportionate user count) * lemm.ee (centralized by Cloudflare) * sh.itjust.works (centralized by Cloudflare) * lemmy.ca (centralized by Cloudflare) yet the main landing timeline is polluted with junky content from centralized instances. Apparently it’s the federated timeline of fedia not my home timeline with just my subscriptions. I found the subscriptions timeline in the top right corner to the left of my userid. very useful! I would still like to browse the federated timeline but to filter out the above-listed domains. The user settings has a “blocked »domains” tab, but I see no way to add to that in the control panel. And from the content there is no “block domain” option, just a “more from domain” option. So overall there are bugs to fix and features needed: * ~~(BUG) cannot add to settings»blocked»domains~~ (works, just undocumented.. must add one mag at a time) * (feature request) the main federated timeline filter (a funnel icon) could use a way to filter out centralized instances * (feature request) the expanded menu of a post should have a “less from domain” option * [new] (feature request) add support for blocking whole instances configurable by each user, not just specific mags. * [new] (feature request) ability to still see mentions in blocked mags. If I post something in a mag then later block that mag, mentions still trigger notifications (good) but the post cannot be visited. Fixing the bug would not exactly accommodate all the needs because although I don’t want to see new posts originating from lemmy.world, I still want to see comments from lemmy.world users.

error 500 when visiting the “we’re back” thread and also notifications

I cannot view the [“we’re back”](https://fedia.io/m/fedia/t/367247/We-re-back) thread -- just get the error 500. I see that I have a notification but cannot access it because my notifications give an error 500.

Search feature should find local mags. It should also prioritize local mags on the top

I created `!privacy@fedia.io` yet when I query for “privacy” on fedia.io, this group is not listed at all, not even on the bottom. It should of course be listed. It should also be prioritized on the top of the list.

Cannot reply… Snubbed by the machine. (Cloudflare problem?)

I tried to comment in this thread: [https://fedia.io/m/news@lemmy.world/t/339242/Ex-Americans-are-suing-America-to-get-back-some-of-the](https://fedia.io/m/news@lemmy.world/t/339242/Ex-Americans-are-suing-America-to-get-back-some-of-the) Wrote out a msg, clicked “Add comment”. The button faded and changed to “Sending…“ then simply reverted back to “Add comment”. My comment does not get posted. [\#Lemmy](https://fedia.io/tag/Lemmy) is plagued with this behavior where you take the time to fill out a form & submit, and it simply does nothing and gives no reason for the refusal. It’s extremely frustrating because my effort is thrown away and I don’t even get to know why. If a form won’t be accepted, then don’t present it to me in the first place. Now [#Kbin](https://fedia.io/tag/Kbin) is doing it. Lemmy devs say the lemmy server is solid and that it’s the Lemmy *web client* that’s buggy and flimsy -- which seems likely (the client is javascript after all). But in this case at hand I’m using a kbin client to post to a lemmy community. Is the kbin client talking directly to the lemmy server, or does the fedia kbin server proxy the msg? I suspect the former because I’m on tor and [#LemmyWorld](https://fedia.io/tag/LemmyWorld) is [#Cloudflare](https://fedia.io/tag/Cloudflare) configured in a tor-hostile way. So [#fuckCloudflare](https://fedia.io/tag/fuckCloudflare). If this is a CF problem then the Kbin client should be smartened to make CF threads read-only so people don’t waste their time trying to generate content. OTOH I have some doubt about the Cloudflare-blockade theory because I am able to vote in that thread. Why would my votes stick but my comments be refused?

404 error when trying to visit external mag !orgmode@kbin.social

This link gives a 404 error: [https://fedia.io/m/orgmode@kbin.social](https://fedia.io/m/orgmode@kbin.social) yet it’s clear that the mag exists: [https://kbin.social/m/orgmode](https://kbin.social/m/orgmode) There are no threads posted there yet. Is that somehow causing a 404 to be reported?

Most chimneys in my neighborhood are open, thus water enters, yet fireplaces are blocked off. What happens to the water?

I have a few apparently cast-iron chimneys bedded in concrete. They have no hats on them. I’m not sure how the fireplaces were blocked off but it feels solid, as if they bricked them shut and plastered over it. Isn’t this a bad idea? They don’t seem to be filling up with rainwater yet it rains quite heavily. I assume the fireplaces have been blocked off for over a decade at least. There must be quite an ecosystem of creepy crawlies going on in there. So what if I want to open the fireplace back up and install a boiler, sewer vent, wood stove, kitchen range hood, or ventilation system? Can they be restored or must they just be treated as wasted dead space?

Façade absorbs water in some areas. Is paint a decent solution? (update: no it is not)

My façade was old & cracking. Chunks looked like they were close to falling. I removed all the loose bits and re-rendered with new concrete. I did the proper bonding steps with polyvinylacetate ([#PVA](https://fedia.io/tag/PVA)). That previously cracked part of the [#façade](https://fedia.io/tag/fa%C3%A7ade) seems relatively strong and water resistent now (i.e. the color remains light colored and slightly shiny even after rainstorms). There were old parts of the façade that I did not touch because there were no significant cracks. But these old untouched areas appear to absorb water. They are always wet looking. They only appear dry if there is a quite long stretch of no rain. I think it takes several weeks of mid-summer dry weather before the water evaporates. I think the constant moisture will shorten the life of the affected areas and the moisture is apparently getting into the house as well. **anti-stucco paint school of thought** Painting [#stucco](https://fedia.io/tag/stucco) is controversial. Some people insist on it, and some say stucco is meant to “breathe” and should never be painted. I’m personally in the anti-paint let-it-breathe camp. However, I think my situation is a bit exceptional. Perhaps the original stucco was not the right stuff. It’s too porous. Re-rendering seems to have a high cost/benefit. As a hack, I am tempted to prime and paint the part of the façade that appears to be holding water. I would like opinions on this as well as alternatives. I would also like to know if any exterior paint will do the job or should I look for paint with waterproof properties. Note that I do not care much about cosmetics. I just want to reduce the water ingress but ideally without suffocating the wall too much, if possible.

It would be nice to have curtains that absorb street noise.

It would be nice to have curtains that absorb street noise. Some custom curtain tailors offer a fabric that claims to be soundproof. It’s a little pricey. Not absurdly pricey, but it’s also a bit hard to be confident that such thin fabrics can absorb much sound (they claim 20%). I would prefer to try hacks. I’ve heard that thick furniture moving pads absorb sound well. I’ve also heard that fiberous fabrics can be effective. For the moment, I probably want to pass on edgy ideas like egg cartons. Maybe later on those. What fabrics are decent for reducing sound? Specifically, I’m wondering about carpets or painter’s drop cloths. Not the simple white canvas drop cloths, but the thicker drop cloths may out of recycled fabrics.

    Crossposting in kbin

Crossposting can be controversial. Maybe this is a [@jerry](https://fedia.io/u/@jerry) question: Any moral issue with crossposting on [#Fedia](https://fedia.io/tag/Fedia)? If not, then the next question is: how? I posted to m/Law a question about Belgian law. There was a pulldown for magazine & I chose “Law”, but I wasn’t sure if I could add more magazines separated by commas or something. So I just posted it in law. Then in m/Brussels I created an article»URL type of post & simply used the URL of the m/Law article. Seemed to work.. just not sure if that’s proper.
