Please comment if you would like to be added as a mod. I've enjoyed talking with you all and I hope I've made it a good community so far. Thanks!

Clarification on meme posts and Marvel-adjacent (not directly Marvel Studios).

I got a couple reports on the meme post about the Madame Web movie so I wanted to post some clarification on what's allowed in this community. Community rule 4 states: Shitposts and memes are allowed until they prove to be a problem. It hasn't been a problem and we rarely ever get meme posts at all so even if it "low effort", I'm leaving it up since it was mostly upvoted anyway. If they get out of hand, I may start removing them, but this community rarely ever gets reports so it's not really an issue at this time. Also, since we're still a small community and Lemmy is still growing, I think allowing posts that are about Marvel productions that are not Marvel Studios is ok. We don't get a huge amount of posts in general, so I feel like, for the time being, it's fine if other productions' news is allowed. At some point, when we are getting multiple posts a day, we can be more strict about it, but I think, for now, we need the content. Of course, I don't like to do to much without community input, so if you think this is a wrong decision, or have suggestions on how to handle it, please comment. Thanks for participating!

[RECIPE] Holiday Stuffed Sweet Potato - with bacon, pecans & sage www.recipetineats.com

Ingredients 4 x 300g / 10oz sweet potatoes , skin on, washed and dried 1/2 tsp cooking / kosher salt 4 tbsp unsalted butter 5 tbsp pecan nuts (Note 2) 200g / 7 oz streaky bacon , chopped (Note 5 to omit) 1 1/2 cups colby cheese , shredded (Note 3) 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/4 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp onion powder 1/4 tsp paprika Panko topping: 1/4 tsp cooking / kosher salt 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs 2 tbsp sage leaves , finely chopped (Note 4) Instructions Preheat oven to 200°C / 400°F (180°C fan forced). Bake - Prick the skin of the potatoes 15 times with a fork. Place on a foil lined baking tray and bake for 75 minutes or until soft all the way through (check with a butter knife). Scoop - Once potatoes cooked, allow to cool for 10 minutes just to handle. Cut in half lengthwise then scoop out the flesh, leaving a 0.5cm (0.2") wall (use a tea towel if hot). Place flesh in a bowl. Stuffing (*see below for prepping components*)- Mash the potatoes with a fork. Then add the browned butter, 1/2 tsp salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder and paprika. The add half of each the pecans, bacon and cheese (rest reserved for toppings). Stir until combined. Stuff - Place halved sweet potato back on a paper lined baking tray and stuff them equally with filling. Sprinkle with leftover cheese and bake for 25 minutes until cheese is melted. Crunchy topping - Top with reserved pecans, bacon and panko mixture. Bake for another 3 to 4 minutes Rest for 5 minutes then serve! Stuffing & topping components Prepare these while the potatoes are baking. Browned butter - Melt the butter in a small silver pan or saucepan over medium heat. Leave to simmer on medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring every now and then, until (when you push foam aside) you see little golden-brown bits and it smells nutty. Immediately pour into a small bowl (including the golden bits) and set aside. Toast pecans - Heat a non-stick pan over medium high heat. Add pecans and toast for 2 to 3 minutes until they have golden spots. Transfer to cutting board, cool then finely chop. Crispy bacon - Add bacon into the same pan over medium heat. When the fat starts to melt, turn the heat up to medium high and cook until golden (4 to 5 minutes). Scoop out bacon with a slotted spoon and place into a small bowl. Leave leftover fat in the pan. Golden panko - Still on medium high, add the Panko topping ingredients. Stir until golden, around 2 minutes, then scrape into a bowl. Notes 1. Sweet potato - If your potatoes are larger or smaller, that's fine. There's enough topping / filling for around 1.2kg / 2.4lb sweet potato. 2. Nuts - sub almonds, walnuts, macadamia or other of choice. 3. Cheese alternatives - sub cheddar, tasty, gruyere, Monterey jack, gruyere, swiss cheese. If using mozzarella, I’d mix in 1/4 cup of parmesan cheese for a flavour / salt boost. 4. Sage works so well with the flavours in this dish (fresh, not dried). Rosemary is my back up herb here. Fallback - just use parsley for the green specks in the topping! 5. To leave out bacon - it will still be great without because there's so many other flavours going on here. If you really want to compensate, then add 1/4 cup parmesan into the filling and 2 tbsp into the Panko mixture. It will take the place of the flavour and salt punch you get from bacon! 6. Assemble ahead - The potatoes can be cooked and stuffed, then baked the next day. Leftovers will keep for 4 days though there's nothing like freshly baked!

Echoing the other comment. Curry powder and Asian "instant curry" are very different things. That being said, Korean and Japanese curries are very similar. You can find both in powder or "block" roux forms. Ottogi is probably the most common brand of Korean curry mix. S&B being the most common Japanese one. You can find both in most Asian grocery stores.

The main differences is in what's put in. Koreans use more pork or beef short ribs as well as fermented or pickled veggies, like kimchi in as well. But yeah, you can put basically whatever you want in. Tofu especially, we use tofu just as often as other proteins. Kimchi Jigae or Kimchi soup, being one of my favorites.

[RECIPE] Korean Curry Rice (Kare Rice) mykoreankitchen.com

Ingredients 250 g beef chuck steak (or your choice of meat), (8.8 ounce), diced 1 Tbsp sweet rice wine (mirin) 3/4 cup water , to mix with the curry powder 100 g Korean curry powder (3.5 ounce) 2 Tbsp cooking oil 200 g onion (7 ounce), peeled and cut into large cubes 70 g salted butter (2.5 ounce) 150 g potato (5.3 ounce), peeled and cut into large cubes 120 g carrot (4.2 ounce), peeled and cut into large cubes 4 cups water steamed rice , to serve Instructions In a bowl, marinate the meat with sweet rice wine (mirin), then set it aside for 5 minutes. In a small jug, combine 3/4 cup of water with the Korean curry powder. Mix well until you achieve a smooth, well-blended mixture. Preheat a large pot (e.g. dutch oven) over medium-high heat. Then, add the cooking oil and sauté the onions until they turn golden brown. Add the previously marinated meat to the pot and stir. Cook the meat until it reaches a medium level of doneness, with a slight hint of pink in the center. Add the butter to the pot and stir until it completely melts and evenly incorporates into the dish. Add the potato and carrot pieces to the pot, and then pour in 4 cups of water. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat. Continue cooking uncovered for about 30 minutes, periodically skimming off any bubbles or foam that may form on the surface and discarding them. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Finally, add the prepared curry powder mixture to the pot and stir it in until the curry thickens, which should take around 1 minute. Serve the curry on a bed of steamed rice with a variety of side dishes to complement the flavors. Some popular side dishes include kimchi, radish kimchi, pickled radish, and a refreshing pickled cucumber. You can store any leftover curry in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days, or freeze it for up to 3 months.

(see notes) In a medium saucepan, bring jerk marinade to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer until reduced to a paste-like consistency and measures about 3 1/2 cups, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool, about 1 hour at room temperature, then refrigerate in an airtight container until ready to use. For the Jerk Pork: Using a sharp paring knife, Cut through one side of the pork shoulder to the bone, following the length of the bone. Cut around the bone and keep cutting to within an inch of the other side of the shoulder. Open the pork shoulder flat like a book. Cut under the bone and remove it to finish butterflying the roast open. The roast should now be splayed flat and measure about 3-inches thick. With the pork shoulder butterflied open skin-side up on the cutting board, use a sharp knife to score the skin 1/2 -inch deep and 1- inch apart to create evenly spaced parallel cuts. Flip pork over and repeat on the flesh side. Season pork lightly all over with salt and pepper. Transfer pork to a large baking dish (9 by 13-inch) or a half-hotel pan. Using gloved hands, rub 2 cups of the jerk marinade all over pork, making sure to get some inside cuts and crevices. Next, rub bruised pimento (or bay or banana) leaves between your hands to release the natural oils, then rub leaves all over the marinated pork on all sides. Cover and refrigerate for at least 12 or up to 24 hours. For a Charcoal Grill: Light a chimney full of charcoal briquettes (about 6 quarts). When all charcoal is lit and covered with gray ash, pour out and arrange coal on one side of charcoal grate. Set cooking grate in place, cover grill, and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. Clean and oil grilling grate. Cover grill and wait until temperature falls to about 300°F (150°C), adding chunks of wood (or wood briquettes or chips) when at temperature. (Follow here for how to set up a kettle grill with indirect heat as a smoker.) When the wood is ignited and producing smoke, remove pork from marinade, letting excess marinade drip off into pan, then transfer to grill (on cooler side if cooking with indirect heat) skin side up. Cover with the pimento leaves from the marinade, and close the lid. Cook, undisturbed, until the meat begins to caramelize and char on the bottom side, about 1 hour. Remove the leaves, turn pork skin side down, then reposition on the cooler side of the grill and re-cover with the leaves. Continue to cook, covered, until beginning to char on the now-bottom side of the pork, about 1 hour. (Adjust heat by adding coals and/or adjusting the air vents to maintain grill temperature around 300℉ (150°C).) Add extra wood chunks to coals as needed to maintain smoke.) Remove the leaves, flip pork, keeping on the cooler side of the grill, re-cover with the leaves, and continue to cook until pork is well charred all over and interior reaches 185°F (85°C), 1 to 2 hours longer, flipping pork and repositioning leaves as needed for even charring. Transfer pork to a work surface, discard leaves, and let rest for 30 minutes. Slice pork into thick slices or chop in rough chunks, which is how they serve it in Jamaica. Serve with festival, pickled Scotch bonnet peppers, and ketchup on the side.

Thanks! Perilla and truffle oil would be so good. I usually add a little sesame oil and soy sauce in most ramyun as well. I did try making Gyudon (Japanese thin sliced beef over rice/noodles) recently using dashi. Turned out pretty good. Miso is definitely a staple, even just mixing some paste with water for a quick soup.

One day I may try making an actual ramen broth but that takes forever, lol. I'm thinking about doing just a simple garlic and ginger fry and adding in chicken broth, sesame oil, and soy sauce for a quick Shoyu style broth. Probably experiment with everything you mentioned as well. Thanks!

I found this Reddit comment that I think explains the movie pretty well. I agree it can go over your head easy but this makes the most sense to me and is closest to how I felt about it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/189iju6/the_boy_and_the_heron_is_beautiful_and/kbtzvns/ ::: spoiler spoiler The film is not about Mahito's "quest" to find Natsuko. It's about his "quest" to overcome his grief / anger / bitterness and persevere in an unjust and cruel world, and his ability to find Natsuko and accept her as his new mother is just one aspect of that.

I don't agree that the last half of the movie is vague at all. The general thematic thrust is very clear: "I am dying soon and the fabric of my reality is coming apart; you can follow in my footsteps and try to control everything until the bitter end, or accept that life is chaos and you can only control some things so try to enjoy what you can." The main themes are death and rebirth. Mahito, in meeting a younger version of his mother (Himi), finally gets closure about her death ("I'm not afraid of fire"), even as she passes him onto her sister Natsuko, who is both Mahito's "new mother" and also literally pregnant with a new child.

The plot is pretty simple and makes sense when you don't overthink it. My take is that if you see it again, knowing how the film is structured, it will be easier for you to understand.

Natsuko is called to the tower because she is part of the uncle's bloodline. (Kiriko mentions "We maidens can't hear the tower master's voice.") The tower master intends to keep the baby as his successor. Himi makes it clear that the Tower Master expects to keep Natsuko and her child there forever, and initially suggests Mahito give up and go home. So the stakes for Mahito are that he loses his "mother"/family AGAIN. The "taboo" of entering the birth room is probably a part of the religious beliefs of the parakeets relative to their "Lord"/God, who is the Tower Master, but it has echoes of the Japanese myth of Toyotama-hime , who turned into a dragon while giving birth and devoured her husband for breaking the taboo – the papers in this film, with their sharp teeth, resemble a dragon as well. She says she hates him because she and the chamber are in the clear possession of the meteor, which understands that that is one of the worst things she could say to him (whenever you see the electric sparks, that is a sign that the meteor is reacting). Natsuko escapes at the end of the film because the stone implodes and no longer has control over her.

Mahito does reflect on this choice between his two encounters with his granduncle. In his first encounter he derides the stone blocks as being "full of malice" since they are tombstones. He awakens from his slumber and witnesses the lengths to which the parakeets will go to confront their "Lord." Then on his second encounter, he realizes it's actually himself that is "full of malice" (signified by his self-inflicted wound) and that he isn't worthy of becoming a God. It seems you missed the idea that the tower master, via the meteor's power, has control of space and time – the tower master is responsible for the suffering of the pelicans, the wara wara, the parakeets, etc etc. It is a "perfectly balanced" world by his standards, and he offers Mahito a chance to "build his own tower" and create a world of beauty and harmony. He says this very explicitly.

This is a matter of taste but I don't know why you would look for that sort of melodrama from a Miyazaki film. When Chihiro is reunited with her parents in Spirited Away, they don't hug and cry and get emotional. In The Wind Rises, Jiro is so disaffected, he can barely communicate his love for his wife even as she withers away in front of him. Miyazaki is about conjuring genuinely intimate moments between human characters with all their fears and faults, and I would argue that the low-key tea and jam Mahito shares with Himi is 100% more beautiful and emotional than "a tearful reunion" would have been, given that Mahito is so emotionally damaged. It seems clear to me that he recognizes she's his mother on a fundamental level as soon as he eats her bread, which "is just like my mother used to make" (which is also after she tells him that Natsuko is her sister). We as the audience basically know Himi is his mother the first time we see her. So why would Miyazaki feel the need to include some sort of "reveal" scene? It's not a Hollywood film. He respects our intelligence as viewers too much to do that.

Most of Miyazaki's films are filled with "unexplained" magic, logical leaps, etc. This one is just ingeniously designed to keep you asking questions – which is why the original title is "How Do You Live?" ::: EDIT: Copy/pasted comment in case you don't want to go to reddit.

Well I very much enjoyed it. It's perhaps Miyazaki's most beautiful film. There's so much detail and the animation is top notch. I was particularly impressed with the sound design.

I saw the English Dub, since I've never watched any Ghibli film dubbed before and this has a stacked cast. Ill rewatch it in Japanese at some point. They were all great, especially the kid who plays Mahito, Luca Padovan. Christian Bale, while good, felt a little like he was in a different movie with his regional American accent he was doing, that no one else did. Robert Pattinson's voice was completely unrecognizable and I continue to praise him despite all the people hating on him because they only know him from Twilight.

The themes of getting over grief/anger are present like a lot of Ghibli films and they are done so well here. Well deserving to be Miyazaki's last film and a great addition to his legacy.

I'm in agreement with most said here. Users of other instances wouldn't know of our TOS and rules generally. But also, our TOS is for access to "the website" i.e. lemmy.world. Users on other instances are not using this website, technically. They are accessing information originated here. It's a complicated situation because of the nature of federation.

Personally, I would try to manage LW users specifically when it comes to age restrictions as those are the ones who agreed to our TOS and age requirement. So basically, if a LW user is known to be under 18, take action, and if a user from another instance openly says they are under 18, then take action. Explanation is up to you.

I’d say, unless the “other account” directly and openly states that Lemmy account XYZ is definitely theirs, and someone else directly reports it to you, I wouldn’t worry about what they might or might not do on other instances. You’re only responsible for for own community, not for the entirety of the Fediverse.

    Yes, love this explanation.

…but again: polite warning and explanation first, always. Explain instead of punish, because they might not be aware that they even did something wrong. Give them the chance to fix their mistakes first, and only take action if they’re unwilling to do that.

And this is most situations in general, not just age issues.
