My experience is limited, but not no experience. In any case, it's not like Windows 10 will be immediately unusable when support ends.

What are your plans when end of life /support comes to Windows ten?

Switch to Linux and run virtual machines when I need to use Windows.

Right now I don't quite have the drive to do it, but an end to support for Windows 10 would push me over the edge. I just can't stand Windows 11, not even because of all the bullshit but just the way it mandates the UI structure - last time I tried it my dealbreaker was that you can't just have it always display all taskbar icons, you have to manually force each one to show. If a new icon comes up, it will be hidden.

If the US only awarded actual damages like most of the rest of the world, instead of inflated punitive damages, then this would pretty much be a non-issue. Rightsholders in the US see targeting copyright infringement as a source of income, not a necessary indemnity.

I don't think Trump is the next Hitler lol Hitler actually had some real carisma and intelligence. Your whataboutism turned into hyperbole is clearly flat and false.

Incidentally, do you know who it was who coined the term Mainstream Media, in the context of saying "you shouldn't believe Mainstream Media"? That was Joseph Goebbels. You are literally spouting Nazi propaganda.

I'm not brainwashed, I try to take in as many sources I can and review them impartially, then come to an objective conclusion. Unfortunately for you, reality and truth skew away from your beliefs.

Russian collusion has not been debunked. The investigations were quashed.

Biden is on tape threatening to hold back a billion dollars in aid money if Ukraine didn’t fire a certain prosecutor.

Yes, Biden was under direction from the President to sort out corruption in Ukraine, where Russia had been funnelling money through Ukraine's PrivatBank. Trump has been associated with this money laundering, and yet none of it has seen the light of day - the lawsuits in Delaware and the UK were both postponed until after Ukraine's lawsuit, which was scheduled for summer 2022. This never happened due to the Russian invasion.

You're still trying to bring up Biden being photographed at the cemetary while conducting his duties with Trump trying to take photographs explicitly for his election campaign. The two are not the same.

Most of the military does not support Trump. Hell, most of the US does not support Trump - he has never won a popular vote in his life. You're pulling things out your ass now, and I can smell that shit well before I can see you.

The thing is they're entwined with the military, eg the X-37, so they probably will keep getting things like that. No other company makes space vehicles for the US that I'm aware of. Maybe Lockheed Martin have some secret stuff, but with space it's incredibly difficult to get things up there and remain unnoticed.

Sure, I share your displeasure with Boeing's airline division. However a significant portion of those were just accidents, ones that couldn't have reasonably been predicted and were readily learned from and corrected. And many of those were not the fault of Boeing's design.

The crimes started after MDD and Boeing merged, when the MDD directors came onto the Boeing board and then performed the same antics they'd done at MDD that run that business into the ground. Things like ignoring issues at design stage, refusing to acknowledge the issue until after 2 major fatal accidents had occured, and "gentleman's agreements" with the FAA to get around safety rules. These happened with the DC-10, and then they happened with the MAX.

But Boeing was at one point one of if not the most respected engineering aviation companies. Don't revise history based on current events. In any case, we're talking about the space division here, where they do maintain some of the original professionalism and standards Boeing used to have running in its blood. This is evidenced by the fact it was Boeing engineers who raised the issues, rather than trying to cover them up and leave them for NASA to find.

Also, I was merely pointing out that your malice should be pointed at these directors - the people who let people die and then ran off with all the money before the business started to fail.

The directors belong in prison. Slagging off the Boeing brand and jerking off over it is not in pursuit of that goal.

Aside from him lying to you and breaking your boundaries, he's quite clearly on a phase where he's trying harder and harder things. Trying weed and mushrooms in Amsterdam is one thing, but more than likely he was doing those before and went there on a drug holiday. Taking LSD the way he is probably isn't healthy either, but escalating to meth is another thing entirely.

He's not going to get better on his current track, no matter what you do. You need to cut him lose before he cheats on you with a meth head (if he isn't already, we've already established he's a liar).

Starliner isn't going anywhere, the flaws so far have been identified and mostly addressed. The only outstanding one is the doghouse arrangement of control thrusters, which has apparently led to overheating. This likely isn't anything anyone could have predicted.

    The failures so far:

    1. Flammable tape being used around wiring. This annoys me, and Boeing as an airline manufacturer should really have known better. However, it is notable that this was discovered by Boeing engineers - it's not like they tried to cover it up.
    2. Parachute lines not being rated for the worst case scenario. They were rated for 3 chutes, but NASA required capability to land safely with 2 out of 3 chutes. Boeing found this also before crewed flight certification.
    3. Helium leaks. That's what it does, helium is a sneaky bastard and leaks are common.
    4. Aft control thrusters receiving heating beyond what was expected causing teflon poppet valves to expand and the thrusters to shut down.

Boeing as a brand is heavily tarnished, primarily from the MCAS and door plug issues, however it's also not going anywhere. The company is too heavily entwined with the US military.

Meanwhile the old guard have mostly left the company and dropped the bag, leaving the remaining investors to feel the brunt of everything while they run off with the short term profits. They've won, and all the bitterness people are displaying isn't affecting them.

I'm all for hating on the bullshit from Boeing - and have a particular bug in my bonnet against the former McDonnell Douglas C-suite levels who have dragged the company through the mud, performing the same antics they did at MDD - but the fact is the issues with Starliner have been massively overblown by people looking to jump on a hype bandwagon.

That isn't to say the craft is without issues, nor that some of the issues (1 & 2) shouldn't have happened, but just that people aren't being rational, and the anti-PR noise is annoying and counterproductive.

All you have to do is look at the interviews they do with Kamala or Biden (the very few of them they’ve done) and then listen to the interviews they do with Trump or just about any Republican really. It’s more than obvious.

If it's so obvious it should be easy for you to link to such an interview. Ideally, we should have two interviews from the same interviewer, one for either side, then we can determine the bias of that interviewer. Determining bias of the network would require much more evidence.

every now and then they’ll ask Kamala a tough question, but then she’ll give a completely false answer and they just move on to the next one.

Trump lies with almost every breath and gets away without fact checking against the vast majority of it. You claim Kamala does this also, but your only example so far has been one where the very network you claim is biased towards her in fact corrected her, at that very moment. They followed up on that. That's what you said, now you're trying to claim that they don't follow up on her gaffes.

Perhaps it's a flaw with interviewing in general, because interviewers for sure don't fact check Trump very much. The fact checking comes after the fact, by other parties. However you can only be biased if you think Trump is fact checked more than Kamala, proportional to the amount of lies either of them make.

The fact is she makes fewer gaffes, that's why it seems like they follow up less - there's less to follow up on, and what is followed up on is usually less substantial. Meanwhile Trump lies all the time, and it becomes so tiresome trying to correct every word he says that most get overlooked, and can only be picked apart by in depth breakdowns that most people don't have the time to watch.

If Trump claimed he retired from the military under a rank that he didn’t have, you’d never hear the end of it. Tampon Tim does it and they actively defend him.

Tampon Tim, lmao, your mask is slipping and you're revealing how much kool-aid you've drank.

No one is comparing Tim to Trump. People are comparing Tim to Vance. Vice President nominee to Vice President nominee. JD Vance himself tried to dismiss Waltz's 24 years' service in the National Guard because he didn't see combat, while ignoring the fact that Vance was in a PR department of the marines - for far less time - and also did not see combat. Vance's military career was purely about getting a line on his resume, while you don't serve for 24 years without some genuine patriotism. Walz suffered hearing damage from firing artillery, meanwhile Vance can't even claim he developed carpal tunnel syndrome from his military service.

You also cannot genuinely claim that Walz's military career is glossed over. No one has challenged Vance's career up until now, while Walz has faced these accusations and won in spite of them time and time again since 2006. The reason he wins in spite of the accusations is because the accusations are vexatious.

The argument over Walz's rank is semantic. He was promoted, it's just that the promotion was conditional on him completing certain training after the promotion, which he never completed. Similarly, Donald Trump was indicted twice while President, it's just that his party's Senate elected not to actually remove him from the office of President. Walz was still promoted to that rank, and Donald Trump was still indicted twice. Walz was essentially offered a job that he eventually did not take up, meanwhile Trump committed crimes but went unpunished.

Biden was the first to actually use photos he had taken in section 60 in a campaign ad

Biden had his photo taken while performing his duties as then-Vice President. He later re-used that photo in an election campaign. The photo was taken in 2010, then he used it in 2020.

Trump brought media with him to take photos during his election campaign for the purpose of using those photos in his election campaign.

The rules are clear, you're not allowed to do take photos for the purpose of election campaigning. Biden did not break that rule, he didn't even arrange the photo. You're free to take photos so long as it isn't for the purpose of election campaigning.

In spite of not breaking the letter of rule, I would agree that Biden violated the spirit of the rule. However, Biden is not running for President now, Trump is, and Trump's gaffe happened well after he had dropped out. Trump's getting desperate, and he's making bigger and bigger mistakes.

You also cannot say that Biden was at fault and disrespected the military without admitting that Trump disrespected the military.

Ultimately, it feels like talking to you is pretty pointless. You stubbornly refuse to concede anything, no matter how minor, chasing some proverbial "win". You've chosen to follow your favourite fiction, rather than embrace a search for objective truth. Frankly, I believe that clinging to ignorance, in spite of evidence to the contrary, is the greatest sin a human being can commit. It brings shame to your ancestors, to the good men and women who sacrificed their lives for you to live in relative comfort.

Trump secured three pay raises for our troops and their families including the largest pay raise in over a decade.

    Not quite correct:

Basic pay for the military did increase by 2.4 percent on Jan. 1, 2018 — the largest in eight years. But pay increases are determined by a statutory formula, and Trump in fact requested an amount below the automatic adjustment for 2018. Congress overrode the president’s proposal, and Trump ultimately agreed to fully fund the increase as determined by federal law.

Trump didn't secure the pay raise, he wanted to pay them less but was overruled. The other pay raises were also mandatory.

The increase under Trump was also only 2.4%, and the most in 8 years (not "over a decade"). Meanwhile the increase under Biden was 5.2%, the most in decades, plural, more than 20 years.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/senate-passes-defense-policy-bill-52-pay-raise-troops-biggest-boost-de-rcna129668

He rebuilt the military after 8 years of neglect under the previous administration with over $2.2 trillion in defense spending, including $738 billion for 2020.

Spending in defense =/= good for servicemen and veterans. The vast majority of military spending does not go to personnel.

He created the space force as well which was the first new branch of the United States Armed Forces since 1947.

Splintering the USAF off and creating the Space Force arguably does not help the country. For one, the organisations' mandates and domains are so similar that the difference does not provide benefit (NASA covers both aeronautics and space, for good reason). Second, this makes it easier for enemies of the US to determine how much is being inveseted in space activities through separate public disclosures, making it harder for the US to maintain its military lead.

He vetoed the FY21 National Defense Authorization Act, which failed to protect our national security, disrespected the history of our veterans and military, and contradicted our efforts to put America first.

Trump vetoed a bill that had an overwhelming bipartisan majority behind it, knowing full well that his veto would be overruled. That's not a real veto, that's just for show, just to give him something to complain about on social media. The veto was also an attempt to halt funding to federal agencies, a common tactic of the Republican party, and one that hurts actual service members requiring them to continue working without pay.

He protected America’s defense-industrial base, directing the first whole-of-government assessment of our manufacturing and defense supply chains since the 1950s.

Trump also stole classified documents and leaked them to Russia. Him running an "assessment" of US defense supply chains is more about him providing intel to foreign adversaries.

He also helped our Veterans out by giving them the ability to go to whatever doctor they want to go to so they would no longer have to wait so long that some of them were dying to be seen at the VA.

He helped the US healthcare industry by giving them more customers and overruled the VA's pricing system, such that the taxpayer pays more to exploitative corporations.

And I believe that he would have done much more for our military if he wasn’t being held down by all of phony Russia collusion nonsense.

HAH. Trump has always been in bed with Russia, this has been public knowledge since the 80s. His young girl talent agencies were involved with Russian human trafficking.

You've got your head buried in the sand. Trump would rather gut and gimp the military so the US can roll over for Russia.

It looks like you haven't really digested anything of the conversation here before you came in to reply with corrections.

    Not everywhere.

Previous rulings are a precedent in Common Law systems like the US, UK, Canada, or Australia.

Only Supreme Court rulings become a precedent in Civil Law systems like the EU, Russia, most of the rest of America.

Sure, but we're talking about Brazil. You haven't established whether Brazil is common or civil law. Also, we're talking about a Supreme Court ruling.

Not all of the EU is civil law. Ireland and Cyprus both use common law systems.

While common law countries often have roots connected with the UK and are very similar, civil law countries are far more varied. Many civil law countries are distinctly different and arguably should be a separate class of legal structure - even ones with French roots (perhaps the most prominent civil law country).

Ultimately, though, the differences between civil and common law structures are almost entirely technical in nature. The end result is largely the same - in a common law country, case law can continue to be challenged until a Supreme Court ruling, and as such it isn't really proper case law until such a ruling, just like in civil law countries.

    https://guides.library.harvard.edu/law/brazil

Brazil is, in fact, a civil law country. However, they do follow case law from Supreme Court, which would make this ruling about requiring a representative valid case law. Which is what I said to OP.

The EU at its top level creates "Directives"

This is exactly what I said.

The EU made GDPR law (well, strictly speaking they made a directive, then member states make laws that must meet or exceed that directive)

The EU made a directive, this directive led to GDPR laws made by member states. However I was apparently mistaken, it wasn't an EU Tribunal court case that led to cookie splash screens through case law, it was Recital 66 (lol Order 66), essentially a 2009 modification to the 2002 ePrivacy Directive, followed by roundtable discussions that heavily favoured the advertising industry over civil interest groups leading to its formal implementation into the directive in 2012.

    https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/truth-behind-cookie-banners-alexander-hanff-cipp-e-cipt-fip-

    To summarise:

    • What I said at the start was right - Brazil's Supreme Court ruling requiring social media companies to have representatives is valid case law.
    • My example of cookie splash screens wasn't ideal, but you did not give the right reasoning, or any reasoning - it was a poor analogy because it wasn't a judge's rulinig that modified the law but legal discussions that were prompted by public interest groups.

Like I say, it really feels like you didn't read very far before you made your reply. Your comment reads more as a statement of tangentially related things you know with a thin veil disguising it as a correction. If you'd just made those statements without the veil, or if you'd followed through with the corrections and actually explained what was wrong, I don't think I would have found your reply so objectionable (although I may also have woken up on the wrong side of the bed to your comment, sorry about that).

But then, I also wouldn't have looked into the specifics of Brazilian law or the full origins of cookie splash screens, so thanks for the motivation lol.

Yes and no. It only really applies to Twitter/X and Twitter clones. You wouldn't call a Facebook post a tweet, no matter how short, nor would you call a reddit or lemmy post/comment that.

And even then, Mastadon has its own term, toots, and BlueSky calls them skeets.

Until Twitter comes up with a new name in line with their new branding, I think the business should still be referred to as Twitter. But the business should go bankrupt before that happens, hopefully, the lenders need to call in their debts already.

No worries, your comment was at least a little more than just a hollow "source?", as you stated what you were unsure about, so I gave an explanation of why the connection would be feasible.

It also isn't really my job to prove my comment, this isn't a place where people write academic papers that must be cited, it's casual internet conversation. We're all on an equal playing field. You have just as much of an obligation to disprove my comment as I have to prove it.

If I give detailed reasoning, that's a form of evidence, and you should at least provide counter-reasoning instead of just disregarding it because I haven't spoonfed you a source. Not that it seems like you completely disregarded it, but you did latch onto the fact that I didn't do a search on your behalf.

Appologies if I'm still coming off as a little hostile, it isn't personal, this is just something that really bugs me about online chat - when someone puts effort in and then others dismiss it without putting any effort in themselves.

The service has been tested in late 2023 and proven working, at least while the satellites are overhead (at the time there were fewer that had the capability). Starlink also have partnerships with various telecoms companies in countries over the world - the technology will essentially relay from ground based towers on their network to the user via the satellites. They also have no issue turning the system off when they need to as satellites pass over territories, as they have demonstrated over various warzones. However, such a facility could easily be configured to turn on, and even without an agreement from a telecoms company there's no reason they couldn't be run unauthorised, like a Stingray phone tracker. This is the issue I'm raising, one that I don't think anyone else is really talking about yet.

Here's an article from 2 days ago that shows the service is already operational for emergency calls in the US: https://www.econotimes.com/Starlinks-Direct-to-Cell-to-Launch-Free-Global-Emergency-Services-with-T-Mobile-1685521 That was the first result in the news banner in a search for "Starlink direct to cell". Like I say, it really isn't hard to find the information you're looking for.

Ah I wasn't aware of that shortcut, one of the main reasons DDG wasn't working for me was because I thought I could only do !g and then go to the Google page, and Google had been making it more difficult to go from the main search page to Maps.

The page you link to talks about the search results that come at the top of the page, eg a Wikipedia or Trip Advisor result. The actual search itself comes from Bing, and it's more than likely that the top page banner also is processed via Bing.

Edit: However, the Wikipedia page does provide more detail, which proves you right and my assumption wrong:

DuckDuckGo's results are a compilation of "over 400" sources according to itself, including Bing, Yahoo! Search BOSS, Wolfram Alpha, Yandex, and its own web crawler (the DuckDuckBot); but none from Google. It also uses data from crowdsourced sites such as Wikipedia, to populate knowledge panel boxes to the right of the search results.

If I understand DDG correctly, they use Microsoft Bing as their backend for search results. So while they may be branded DDG, the results are in fact out of DDG’a control. It also means we are more subject to Microsoft’s privacy policy than we are to DDG’s.

This is exactly right. DDG is basically a front end that's supposed to strip out identifying information and then submit your request to Microsoft. [Edit:] Apparently they have expanded from this, according to their Wikipedia page. [/E]

However, after seeing TV ads for DDG not that long ago I kind of lost what faith I had left in them. As a rule of thumb, I've never trusted products and services advertised on TV - TV advertising is expensive, and the business expects to make that expense back and then some from their customers.

This is the folly of representative democracy. It inevitably becomes less about policy and instead a popularity contest between figureheads.

Representative democracy has run its course, and the problems it solved (the fact that it's not practical for everyone to attend places of government from far away) have all but been solved by technology. Bring on direct democracy.

Law isn't defined just by legislation, it is also defined by case law. A judge's ruling on a previous case makes that ruling law.

Now, I'm not saying this ruling is appropriate - I simply don't know enough about how it came to be. But if Brazil made laws about social media companies and then a judge made a ruling based on that law requiring social media companies have a representative, then that absolutely is valid law.

To draw an example, the EU never made a law about cookie splash screens. The EU made GDPR law (well, strictly speaking they made a directive, then member states make laws that must meet or exceed that directive), and then a judge interpreted that law and made it a requirement to have cookie splash screens. I would personally argue that the judge was trying to shove a square peg through a round hole there, when really he should have identified that data collection is in fact a secondary transaction hidden in the fine print (rather than an exchange of data for access to the service, this isn't how the deal is presented to the user; the service is offered free of charge but the fine print says your data is surrendered free of charge), and he should have made it such that users get paid for the data that's being collected. However, the judge's ruling stands as law now.

I've had enough of the text editing issue, where when you press backspace it highlights the space before the word and ends up deleting it. The developer passes off responsibility for this to the engine they use and seems to have no intention of addressing it. What are the pros and cons of the other Android apps? piracy
So I finally did the math on data brokerage and worked out how much we're all being robbed

I know this isn't *strictly* piracy related, I apologise, but I think it is tangentally related in that piracy protects you from data theft by avoiding the services the biggest thieves operate. Also, I feel like people here might be very interested in this take. Apparently, the "legal" data brokerage industry was worth $319 billion in 2021, and is predicted to be worth $545 billion in 2028.[^1] Meanwhile, in 2021 there were only 7.9 billion people in the world[^2] - many of whom do not have internet access or have very little data being traded. If we generously assume 6 billion people have equal volumes of data being traded, that means **each person's data is worth $53.17 per year on the market.** Data is effectively stolen from people. We do not get anything in return for it. We may be offered access to a website free of charge, but that is a separate transaction - it is not appropriate for another transaction to be hidden in the fine print of the terms and conditions. When you buy insurance, the key terms have to be front and centre - you pay x, you get y service. Not "You can have y for free!!! ^(But^ ^also^ ^you^ ^give^ ^us^ ^x^ ^for^ ^free.)^" You're supposed to be able to compare the value of the things being traded. Bearing in mind that this is merely data brokerage, not actual processing or deriving any value from the data, a simple profit margin can be applied. They simply collect the data - easily and at low cost through automated processes - and then sell it. If businesses still took a very generous 30% profit (rather than a ludicrous infinite and pure profit) then **the value of an average person's data that they are owed is around $40 per year.** ____ To run the other numbers to check, the global population in 2028 is predicted to be 8.4 billion - a growth of 6.329%. So our 6 billion population would become 6.38 billion, and with the $545 billion market value an individual's data would be worth $85.43 on the market, or $65.71 to the individual. The value of user data is predicted to rise. Obviously that 6 billion population figure I used is an approximation - a blind one at that. To give a worst case valuation for 2021, if we assume all 7.9 billion people equally have data being traded, then an individual's data is worth $40.38 on the market, and $31.06 to the user. These are the minimum values, averaged evenly across the entire global population. ____ When Google and Facebook started out, data had very little value - there was no market for it. Thus it seemed reasonable to let them just take it, even if maybe it could be worth something. The service they offered was new and novel, a shiny new toy for everyone to play with. They then used this data to become some of the wealthiest businesses in the world. Now, even big players like Microsoft have joined in, in spite of the fact that their main products are paid products. One form of bank fraud is where the criminal takes pennies out of multiple accounts, the idea being that people won't notice such a small debit, and banks might write it off as some kind of error. This has been legislated against and proven illegal - yet these assholes take $40 each from *everyone* and get away with it! [^1]:https://www.knowledge-sourcing.com/report/global-data-broker-market Edit: lmao we broke it https://web.archive.org/web/20240107042301/https://www.knowledge-sourcing.com/report/global-data-broker-market ...or did they maybe take it down?? /tinfoil Edit2: it's back up lol [^2]:https://www.populationpyramid.net/world/2021/

When did this happen?! It makes me so happy! It's still not *quite* as good as old reddit with RES was, where you started with everything normal and then clicked a button to expand (or contract) media. Being able to contract everything is almost as useful, particularly if you want to scroll further down. However it's still a great improvement, as well as proof that lemmy just keeps getting better.

    My Favourite Buddhist Quote

This is no doubt a massive butchery of the original quote, taken from my memory of the book "The Buddha, Geoff and Me", but I hope the sentiment carries through regardless. Every day, the Buddha would walk through town. While walking, he would pass a man, who deeply despised the Buddha and everything he stood for. He would hurl insults at the Buddha, the most vile and reprehensible accusations. Every day, the Buddha would just nod and smile towards the man, then carry on his walk. Every day, the man would say the worst thing he could think of. One day, the man did not say anything horrible. He stood in front of the Buddha, stopping him, and asked him, "I say all these things to you every day, why don't you react? Do you not understand how much I think you're a horrible person?" The Buddha replied, after a moment, "If I gave you a gift, would you accept it?" The man said, "No, of course not. You're the worst, I wouldn't accept anything from you." "Then who would the gift belong to, would it be yours?" "No, it's not mine, you have to keep it!" The Buddha replied: "Such is the way with your anger. If I do not accept it, then it belongs to you, and you alone."

Defamation Lawsuit Against Afroman Filed by Ohio Cops Will Partially Proceed reason.com

A judge tossed two of the claims against Afroman, finding that "the issue appears to be the humiliation and outrage that the officers feel at having their likenesses displayed and mocked." ____ The rapper Afroman will have to continue to defend himself against a defamation lawsuit filed by Ohio sheriff's deputies who raided his house after a judge allowed some of the deputies' claims to proceed. In a ruling last week, an Ohio county judge dismissed two of the deputies' claims against Afroman, best known for his 2000 hit "Because I Got High," finding that the rapper's commentary was protected artistic speech. However, the judge allowed three other claims to proceed, finding that it was not outside the realm of possibility that the deputies could prove they were entitled to relief. The Adams County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) executed a search warrant on Afroman's house last August on suspicion of drug possession, drug trafficking, and kidnapping. As Reason reported in June, the deputies were searching for evidence of outlandish claims from a confidential informant that the house contained a basement dungeon. Deputies found neither large amounts of marijuana nor a depraved dungeon. Afroman was never charged with a crime. He responded by releasing two music videos viciously mocking the deputies—"Lemon Pound Cake" and "Will You Help Me Repair My Door." He also sold merchandise with images of the deputies and used the footage to promote his products and tours. The mockery offended the deputies so much that seven of them filed a lawsuit against Afroman in March. The deputies argued Afroman used their personas for commercial purposes without permission, causing them to suffer "embarrassment, ridicule, emotional distress, humiliation, and loss of reputation." In an October 13 ruling on Afroman's motion to dismiss the lawsuit, Adams County Judge Jerry McBride tossed out the deputies' claims of invasion of privacy by misappropriation and unauthorized commercial use, finding that, "while their quality and appropriateness may be questioned, [Afroman's] artistic and musical renderings have substantial and creative content which outweighs any adverse effect on the plaintiffs in terms of their right of publicity." "In this case, the value that seems to be at issue here is not the monetary value of the officers' likenesses, which appears to be nominal," McBride wrote. "Instead, the issue appears to be the humiliation and outrage that the officers feel at having their likenesses displayed and mocked by the defendant. Undoubtedly, they also feel aggrieved by their investigative actions being questioned publicly." However, McBride allowed three of the officers' other claims—false light, unreasonable publicity of private lives, and defamation—to survive, finding that many of Afroman's comments on the deputies appeared to be statements of fact rather than opinion. For example, Afroman posted on social media that deputies wanted to kill him, that one of them stole money from him, and that another deputy was a lesbian. "My clients are pleased with the Court's ruling denying the defendants' motion to dismiss their claims," Robert Klingler, an attorney for the deputies, says. "Telling lies about people in public discourse is never justified, especially when those lies are vile, intentional, and meant only to unfairly damage people's reputations. Mr. Foreman has until now acted as if he can say anything he wants, not matter how untrue and despicable, without any repercussions. We look forward to demonstrating that neither Mr. Foreman, nor anyone else, has the right to intentionally lie about others for the purpose of causing them injury." The Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed an amicus brief in support of Afroman's motion to dismiss the suit, arguing it was a blatant example of what's known as a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP). "We were pleased to see that the trial court properly dismissed several of the police plaintiffs' claims," says David Carey, deputy legal director of the ACLU of Ohio. "Even at this early stage, it is obviously meritless for the officers to claim that Afroman 'misappropriated' commercial value merely by commenting on the events of a destructive search of his home—even if that commentary took the form of harsh mockery, and even if it was placed on products that he offered for sale." Such retaliation for publicly criticizing the police is sadly common. Reason recently reported on a lawsuit filed by an Iowa man who was arrested twice for criticizing his local police department during the public comment period of a city council meeting.

    Context links don't work

I think since the 0.18.3 update, the Context links in comments aren't working for me. On the website, it does nothing. On Jerboa, it loads something, but it misses off the top of the comment tree, and doesn't let me click it again to go further up the tree. The previous version made you click Context multiple times to work your way up the tree, and as you went higher the comment you were looking at might end up further down the tree (branches would be displayed based on your sorting order, rather than the specific context chain). However despite its flaws it was far more functional than this.

A proposal for instance agnostic post and comment links

Maybe this post would be more at home on a lemmy.ml community, or on github, but this place is my home and I feel like I'd like to get opinions here first :o) Right now, there is no way to make an instance agnostic link for a post or comment, like you can do with users or communities. Each instance assigns its own number to posts and comments, and there isn't really an easy way to find a post or comment on one instance when starting from another. For example, if I get a lemmy.world link to a post in a lemmy.world community, in order for me to comment from lemm.ee I would first have to go to lemm.ee/c/community@lemmy.world, then find the post in there manually. If I want to reply to a specific comment, I would have to find the post on lemm.ee in this way, then also search that thread for the comment. If you're looking for an old post with a lot of comments, this can be quite challenging. Instead, I think lemmy needs to revise how it numbers comments and posts, using the same system used for users and communities. Rather than every instance using a different number, they should use the federated host's number followed by @hostinstance. The local user would still see the original federated link, but users from other instances would see it in their own instance with a tag for the federated host instance. This way, anyone could easily edit any link to make it work in their own instance (provided that link has already been federated in their own instance). ____ Here is a specific example I wrote in a comment elsewhere: For a specific example, to me, this post is https://lemm.ee/post/1726780. In the original, federated instance, the post is https://lemmy.ml/post/2308622. Instead, it should appear to me as https://lemm.ee/post/2308622@lemmy.ml. Your comment, to me, is https://lemm.ee/comment/1409174. The federated link is https://lemmy.one/comment/1393053. This is the link you see, and should continue to see, but I should see https://lemm.ee/comment/1393053@lemmy.one. Using the instance in the numbering scheme means each federated host instance manages its own numbering while ensuring there will never be a clash between instances. https://lemm.ee/comment/1393053@lemmy.one and https://lemm.ee/comment/1393053 would refer to two completely different comments. This information is already being transmitted in the process of federation, so it’s just a matter of tagging the data when it’s received.

    Can't reply to kbin.social comments

I frequently find this, for some reason kbin.social comments aren't federating properly. When they reply to my comment thread I am unable to reply to them, and when I log into kbin.social directly and post there my comment doesn't show up on lemm.ee ~~for some time~~ at all. Edit: A good fix is to apply a language to your comment, eg English. This should allow your comment to post. However it seems like there is still some issue with comments federating across after that - your comment might appear on kbin, but you might not get their replies again.

Getting a few errors on page loads

I've had a few errors loading pages in new tabs. Unfortunately I've been hitting refresh before screenshotting most, however this is one of them. The link that failed to load: https://lemm.ee/post/482750?scrollToComments=true Although, it loaded immediately with one refresh. I've also had a few Cloudfire 503 error pages across various tabs. The comment I was replying to was less than 10 min old. The circle would just keep spinning, but also I noted that it didn't give me the "leave this page?" popup when I tried to refresh. I tried many times over, then gave up and just replied with my own kbin.social account. In particular, I'm disappointed that they went ahead with removing captcha. I get that they need to rewrite it, but surely they could have kept it in until the replacement was made? Will lemm.ee be using a modified version to include some temporary captcha and prevent spammers and bots signing up en masse?
