It's sad that more companies are just willing to screw their customers and squeeze them dry of every last penny just for the sake of profit and infinite growth even though we know infinite growth will never be attainable.

Every corporate entity is willing to forfeit their goals for money, especially if they hold a monopoly in a certain space and when growth slows they will look for other ways to offset that income.

I've learned that loyalty means jack shit to the company and it's just another thing they can exploit you with, I'm not loyal to AMD but right now they're the least unethical party in this race to the bottom.

In the words of our lord and savior Linus Torvalds "NVIDIA, fuck you! 🖕", amen.

In all reality, a lot of individuals aren't gonna care when it comes to EULA B's unless they absolutely depend on it and this whole move has me want an AMD gpu even more.

They could bother with pulse, but IDK how portable the API for that is, also discord working on Linux is more accidental and this getting fixed might just be because they want it fixed on the Mac side too.

It's sad to see that discord has waited over 8 years to do this, but the whole thing is soydev code anyways.

From what I can tell they are working on updating their electron version to one that is aware of pipewire, this is the first part of solving the issue (especially for Wayland folks), the second part is just fixing some code in the client to deal with that and then it should be fixed until we deprecate pipewire in 2079. Additionally it would make discord finally act as a native Wayland app instead of being forced in xwayland.

Fate is really solid if you like urban fantasy, just know that with many things regarding visual novel adaptations the anime cuts out a lot of stuff which does change context.

As for watch order: start with stay night (Unlimited Blade Works, then Heavens Feel) and only after should you watch zero as it is written in a way that it expects you to have stay night as context. After zero it's largely just a pick what you want to watch although it's recommended you also watch Deens Fate route adaptation as it covers some stuff of the route you might want to have.

If you want the universe has a couple other stories that are loosely related and also worth a shot, these are Mahoutsukai no Yoru (Witch on the Holy Night), Kara no Kyoukai (The Garden of Sinners), and Tsukihime, all of them have or are getting some sort of anime adaptation which are worth watching (except tsukihime's which should be actively avoided unless you read the entire VN and have copious amounts of alcohol). You can really watch these in any order (even before fate) as they are only loosely related but fate is definitely the most popular of them all.

If you have any further questions feel free to ask me and I'll try my best to explain.

I heard of MakeMKV before, thing is that I generally don't buy blu-rays because of the downright horrible DRM schemes.

if DRM makes it harder for me to enjoy the content I bought and paid for (this includes limiting me to some lowres garbage even though my system is more than capable of playing HD and FHD video) compared to what I would get if I were to pirate it then it's a problem of distribution; not one of morality.

you will always have some group that pirates your content no matter what; but if buying gives me a worse product because of artificial restrictions put on it I can't give any less of a shit.
there's very few streaming platforms that even give me a decent option (and I don't even properly own my library; all I get is a license to watch/listen to something, one that could be revoked at any time in the future without me being able to do anything except complain about it).

Sorry for the late response (for some reason eternity took a bit to show me this).

I used matrix a long time ago so I don't remember it too well but from what I recall my reasons for leaving are:

    1. lack of proper apps There's a few apps for matrix; but if you want to use matrix as a discord replacement you are locked into either the official element app or hope a 3rd party app supports it. Additionally most clients are written using electron; which lies at the core of a lot of issues discord has.
    2. voice calling This is less of a concern about matrix itself; but if you want to use it as a discord replacement VOIP is a hard requirement, discord has it's current market share because it had a really easy to set up and use VOIP service compared to skype (which ran itself into the ground to become teams) and teamspeak (which you need to host yourself or rent a server for). Matrix does 1:1 voice calls fine (it beats 2016 discord), but group and video calls are done over jitsi which takes the app from an annoying background electron hog to a devourer of frames when you're trying to play a game on less than ideal hardware. also because you can host a jitsi conference basically anywhere it defeats the purpose of doing one over matrix.
    3. self-hosting This is something I've heard from others as I never hosted any of these; but this is from more than just luke smith's video. Matrix servers are resource hogs, especially compared to the xmpp/jabber servers which I've heard are pretty lightweight and have the ability to integrate accounts from mastodon, lemmy, pleroma, .... Do note that I don't have personal experience on this point, so take it with a grain of salt.
    4. matrix is unintuitive This is coming from somebody who has braved the discord UI for ages which is far from intuitive either; but matrix takes a special medal in my book. It's like it's trying to mimic slack (which discord also does); but channels and servers are mixed? The UI for element (although nice looking) is straight up terrible, settings were all over the place, and when I finally thought I'd figured something out there's 3 more things I'd have to configure which are in totally different menus, friend and server channels are mixed with no way of separating them (unless there's an option in a settings panel somewhere; but even I who figured out discord's community onboarding didn't find it) The encryption and approval process for new apps is nice, on paper... in reality it means that if you get logged out on your main session (which I found constantly happened on element) you'd be unable to read any messages before and you now had to resecure your account through one of the settings panels which I will tell you right now that no sane person will ever figure out so now all the messages they send come with a warning attached. lastly there's the same issues you have with trying to onboard people onto mastodon or lemmy where they need to find an instance and deal with defederation; but turned up to 11 with nobody really explaining it. they also tell (suggest strongly so nobody really chooses anything else) you to make your account on the primary matrix server anyways which defeats the point of a decentralized protocol as nearly everyone is on the same instance.

1, 2, and 4 were by far my big gripes; and I probably could overcome 4 today now I'm familiar with the fediverse (which I wasn't even a year ago) and I bet the UI has improved at least a little since my last endeavor years ago; but 1 and 2 are dealbreakers if it ever wants to pull anyone from discord, either make the official app good, or get decent 3rd party ones; discord is surviving on linux because it's still the best option and it's not even a decent one, voice calling also needs to be improved if it wants me; because it's just easier to set up and host your own mumble server than get any shred of performance in matrix group calls and mumble's VOIP implementation is nothing short of excellent.

I was recently made aware that XMPP supports account integration with various fediverse platforms (including lemmy for `Ejabberd`). I have long been looking for a proper chat platform that works with the fediverse and was more than disappointed by my experience with matrix. I don't know if there are other people interested in this so I'm making this post to see if there is any interest here locally. Exactly this worked best for me back in the day

Not just you, your brain is wired to pick up language, how did you learn your first one?

I’m German and while we have some mandatory English classes, they’re …well … not good.

I can attest that English classes here aren't great either (although most people here do speak English as a second or third language)

and at least the teacher I had first also had a VERY thick German accent

This is a known side effect of premature output (writing/speaking before you feel comfortable doing so), you don't just listen to what's around you, you primarily listen to yourself and pronunciation differs between languages, this premature output becomes toxic input for your brain which then uses that from then on (you can try and get rid of it; but it is really hard to do)

once I was halfway through the game my brain kinda switched to “English mode” and I actually learned words and grammar in a natural way instead of trying to force myself to understand what the hell a “singular past tense adverb” is.

Yup, that's natural understanding for you. When you speak a language you don't care about the rules; you should instinctively know them.

As for my issue with Duolingo: it ignores the amount of time it takes to properly acquire a language, if I were to split up all the time I spent watching english youtube into 5 minute chunks it'd take me well over 15 years (and that's just accounting for the initial 4 month span; I've learned more things after as I naturally used the language). Combine that with the fact it throws established research on this topic to the wayside to push the school-based one which we know goes against the natural way in which we learn. I found a great blog post online about this, while it mostly revolves around learning Japanese; the core principles apply to learning pretty much any language. The beginning of the post does sum the entire thing up pretty well though:

We do not recommend "language learning" apps like Duolingo, Lingodeer, Babbel, and others due to the fact that their methodology conflicts with AJATT's principles of immersion learning. Such apps do not actually help you with anything. There are no success stories. On the other hand, AJATTers typically reach fluency in just 18 months. The apps prevent you from reading interesting content in your target language, such as manga. And they make you more miserable in the end.

There are some really good parts in that blog that apply to any language; but a lot of it is geared towards Japanese specifically.

The best course of action is to consume as much content in the target language as possible, tv shows, music, YouTube videos... Your brain will eventually pick up on certain parts of the language naturally. Also the best thing you can do is to not force yourself to speak or write in that language until you are comfortable doing so (this is one of the biggest things doulingo does wrong).

I can attest to this method working as I went from barely knowing a couple of English words to speaking it in about 4 months (you could probably do less if you stick to what I outlined above). To back up this method I suggest you look at antimoon which is written by people who have used this to learn English as well.

    Jump
  • Scraft161 Scraft161 9 months ago 100%

If I can give my thoughts on what I've seen in research and linking various factors together.

    1. A not insignificant amount of neurodivergent people tend to pursue a career in IT (mainly people with ASD), these people can learn a lot through self study as it tends to align more with their personal interests, at some point through this they may become exposed to Linux and open source and subsequently choose to learn about that.
    2. Research has revealed a strong link between ASD and gender dysphoria. People diagnosed with ASD are ~4 times more likely to experience it.
    3. Even if you go through gender reassignment, you are still subject to the societal programming associated with your initial gender (which for boys tends to include videogames).

While these 3 facts on their own don't mean much, I can see how these come together to create an above-average amount of trans women in the IT and Linux spheres and this only gets amplified by stereotypes.

That said, this is mere speculation on my end based on the things I mentioned above, I am sure it plays a role; but I cannot be sure as to how significant that is in the grand scheme of things.

As for readability there is an argument to be had in specific contexts, but 9 out of 10 times it makes more sense to use a proper word.

    Example:

    let list = [1, 2, 3];
    for i in list {

Ridiculous copyright terms apparently weren’t enough for Disney and co.

Give them a finger and they won't stop at an arm, all these people are interested in is money; which sadly enough does not guarantee a good product

Yes, unfortunately, that’s all we can do. I doubt it will convince any of these companies to abandon these practices, but I refuse to support them monetarily. I’m reminded of the Veronica Mars Movie kickstarter campaign, where fans happily pledged over $5 Million dollars to see it come to fruition. Warner Bros. rewarded their fans for their generosity and support by encumbering the film with DRM so GNU/Linux fans who funded the film couldn’t watch the film

Holy, I didn't know of Veronica Mars before this but it doesn't really surprise me. I bet they figured the movie would never break even normally so they just extorted fans; this doesn't even remotely look like incompetence.

MakeMKV is fantastic and I highly recommend it if you ever buy a show on Blu-Ray. Hell, even DVD. I don’t know how well it keeps up with constantly changing Blu-Ray encryption schemes, but it seems to be much better than any of the standard methods. Plus, it has a nice GUI. I’m still using it with a trial license but if I find myself using it more, I think I’ll pay for a license.

I'll keep that in mind; it is sad to see it's not FOSS (or at least not from what I can see). I haven't needed to rip anything in a good while but when I inevitably will this will be in my toolbelt.

MKV video is fantastic though, almost everything anime I download is MKV (batch releases often having both english and japanese audio alongside softsubs and proper video and audio codecs is a blessing), whenever I need to hold video in an intermediary format I use MKV as it can hold pretty much all codecs I use.

That’s an interesting thought. I can’t say I disagree with it at all. I own Harmony on Blu-Ray and started watching it again for the first time since 2015 (fantastic film btw), and it really does feel that way. The more advanced technology gets, the less the general public can do with it.

Most of it isn't even because of technology, all the shit they're pulling with electric cars they could have with ICE cars and the board computer. Heck electric cars should be easier to repair as there are less moving parts and the design is much simpler; the only reason we can't is because they put systems in the way that require proprietary tools.

Same happened with the switch to smartphones where these devices lost things like user replaceable batteries even though there is no technological reason for it, and it's taking the might of the european union to undo this age old trend.

On the subject of locking down physical books, TorrentFreak has a super interesting article on the history of libraries and how publishers really didn’t like them

Definitely going to give that a read; I do know that we have proper technologies for decentralized file hosting and indexing (not just bittorrent, but also IPFS which bases itself on the same technologies), these will definitely become a requirement if we want to fight over the ability to share information freely.

Mastodon integration with lemmy & how to post here using your mastodon account.

there are a couple posts across lemmy describing how to use mastodon with the service; but I have yet to find one that sums everything up neatly. also I'm doing this in my own community for moderation purposes. # 1. Viewing users and communities Any lemmy user will show up in mastodon as a normal user and vice versa, posts/toots probably won't federate properly, and toots from mastodon will not show up in lemmy for the time being as lemmy does support self-posts. Likewise any community will show up in mastodon as a user, but this user will function like a [mastodon group](https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/), you can follow the account to "join" the community and it's posts should show up in your timeline. # 2. Posting to lemmy on mastodon This is the tricky part, while it is simple in theory; due to how both platforms differ you need to keep a couple things in mind. 1. mention the account address in your toot ex: `@tsukihime@iusearchlinux.fyi` 2. the first line of your toot is the post title, titles do **not** support anything beyond plain text so don't put mentions, links, ... here 3. you can use markdown formatting on lemmy 4. the first image attached to your toot will be the preview image on lemmy, any other images will not show up at all. # 3. Comments/replies Comments from Lemmy don't seem to federate through to mastodon (I tried a whole bunch of things across various clients and I didn't manage to get a single comment through. Replies from mastodon however seem to show up in lemmy just fine. # 4. Notes A lot of this is from personal testing I conducted using this instance, I highly suggest you try some experiments yourself from another lemmy instance if you can (of course without cluttering somebody else's community without permission) and try and help lemmy and mastodon out how to federate with each other if you can.

    anyone else having this problem?

it started popping up on lemmy 0.18 instances for me and it's inconsistent, sometimes refreshing or updating the feed or even posting something there would make the buttons pop up (as new elements that is). I can't interact with them so something is definitely wrong.

    A 2015 Toshiba Satellite

I've been using this ever since I got it and besides a couple minor issues such as the touchpad I never use not working and dealing with it's NVIDIA GPU setup it's been working really well. I've been using dwm for over 2 years now using a custom package that is automatically patched using arch's build system and I've been happily using the tokyo-night colorscheme since late last year.

Tips for extracting assets from Tsukihime, Plus Disc, and Kagetsu Tohya

disclaimer: while I've only fully extracted Tsukihime, both Plus Disc and Kagetsu Tohya are built with the same tooling so everything should still apply. Before we start you should have some installation of Tsukihime (not the remake), we're only going to use a couple files from it; but these are the actual game contents. Addtionally you want to get [AETools](http://wks.arai-kibou.ru/ae.php) to actually extract the archives, the program isn't really maintained anymore; but neither is Tsukihime. ### Audio By default Tsukihime streams it's audio from the CD, if you have the japanese release or an ancient translation patch you'll have to rip the audio yourself or find a source online. The Mirror Moon translation includes a patch to the game that alters the way the game does music, you'll be able to just find the music in the `CD` folder or somewhere near the game's installation. ### Game script The game's script is found inside the `nscript.dat` file, this .dat archive contains a single file `0.txt`. This file might not display well in all applications as it is SHIFT-JIS encoded, you should be able to save a copy of the file as UTF-8 using notepad; otherwise there exist various tools to do this for you. NScripter's language is very primitive, but Tsukihime's script is pretty hefty so I would advise against dropping it in a heavy IDE. What is of note is that you have 2 types of sections: `f-block`s dictate the flow of the script, if you are interested in all the choices the game makes you should look here, `s-block`s contain the scenes, this is where the text lies alongside what graphics to show and what audio to play. ### Assets These are all the audio, backgrounds, character graphics and other tidbits the game uses, you'll find these in `arc.sar`. if you have `arc.nsa` and `arc1.nsa` they aren't too relevant (mostly copies of files found in arc.sar). PS: if you have any notes on this please let me know. Additionally if you have knowledge/experience with the remake (or mahoyo HD) I would love to hear of anything you have.

Who do you think is the best character of Tsukihime and why is it Ciel?

I know people will say I'm biased, but you can't spell biased without "I" and "based".

What's the general consensus behind Ciel's remake design?

I like both designs quite a bit myself; but I feel like the remake one does a couple things that I don't like. The original is a really good embodyment of the character and is able to do a lot with Takeuchi's more primitive art at the time, it manages to set her apart and highlight what her character is while not straying from what the rest of the VN is. That said it is obvious that like many other things og tsukihime that it is very much a diamond in the rough situation and that it does lack this aspect of polish. The remake is able to address a lot of this by just 20 years of extra experience and in many ways is able to refine the overall design a fair bit; even if we have to put up with the sameface problem (even though Ciel suffers the least from this). My main gripe with the remake is her executioner outfit which goes from pretty badass but still rough to an immitation of Mash from Fate/Grand Order, while I do like a lot of the work put in the new outfit and all it does to try and improve; it goes from bland in comparison to the rest of the game to bland in comparison to the rest of the nasuverse. The big thing for me is the tattoos (or lack thereof), they worked as a really nice accentuation to her outfit and managed to make executioner Ciel a quite nice and detailed design especially in the original game; remake throws all of this out of the window for a more generic version of her outfit which would do well with the tattoos and early design documents show that they were considered and then later removed.

    Where to start with Tsukihime

TL;DR: start with the original [here](https://readtsukihi.me/downloads) then move on to the rest, if you don't like visual novels then you can read the manga which has been translated on [mangadex](https://mangadex.org/title/477800d5-bae8-4adb-b422-23e6cfa7ec87/shingetsutan-tsukihime). **DO NOT START WITH SOME MYTHICAL TSUKIHIME ANIME**, if you were to find it across timelines you can discuss how bad it is with our other fellow steiners (do people still get Steins; Gate references?) --- Tsukihime is a work with a few adaptations and such, and knowing where to start may be a daunting task, this thread should help you get started. There are a few ways to get started and I'll be summarizing the main ones here. ### Original Visual Novel Pros: - You get to enjoy the full story Cons: - Really old - Very Long This is the general recommendation if you're in it for the long run, the VN has quite a few rough edges; but if you can look past those it is the best way to enjoy the story, just know that it is basically a book with some PNGs and music. ### Remake Pros: - Better art, music and story - Officially available Cons: - Only on switch/PS4 (PS4 does not have an english translation) - Requires patch for english translation (switch only) - New timeline - Only the first 2 routes I don't recommend starting here as there are many cons and the remake changes the story quite a bit and currently only the first 2 routes are available which is a small fraction of the game. Update: An official English release for the first part is slated for 2024. ### Manga Pros: - Great art Cons: - Only first route The manga is a good starting point for if you are on the edge or unwilling to read either VN, it only covers the first route of the game and pull some elements from the second route later on. ### Notes - For many Tsukihime goes from great to masterpiece in it's far side routes, these routes have not been adapted outside of the original VN - The far side routes will be in the remake as a separate game for which no release date has been provided yet - you can find more info on [readtsukihi.me](https://readtsukihi.me)

    Welcome fellow vampire hunters

News has it that Roa has reawakened; but the church has yet to ascertain his location, in order to aid our efforts in defeating him once and for all I have been tasked with creating an online place where we can collect evidence from all over the world instantaneously so we can finally beat that old fashioned self proclaimed princess to the punch. --- This is a lemmy community focused on discussions about Type Moon's first visual novel: Tsukihime (lit: moon princess). I am not affiliated with the tsukihime subreddit; I'm just a random fan who wanted a place to discuss the series. Most discussion here will likely be around the visual novel (original or remake), but related media is fine too (just like a certain cat), so discussions regarding plus disk, kagetsu tohya, or melty blood are also encouraged. [Fate](https://lemmy.ml/c/fate), Kara no Kyoukai, Mahoutsukai no Yoru, DDD, and other nasuverse works should be discussed in their own community unless there is some tie back to tsukihime. PS: Ciel best girl

what are some neovim plugins you cannot work without

I've been using neovim for a good while by now and it's become my notes app, code editor, and IDE. This is thanks to the vast ecosystem of plugins available to neovim extending it past anything the developers would be able to think of and they make this way of using neovim not only possible; but also viable. I personally use quite a few plugins nowadays, but I'm curious as to what all of you tend to use. ::: spoiler The main plugins I use ``` neovim/nvim-lspconfig (pre-baked lsp configuration for neovim) ms-jpq/coq_nvim (fast CoC/YCM replacement utilizing builtin lsp) ms-jpq/coq.artifacts (snippets for coq) ms-jpq/chadtree (nerdtree replacement) lewis6991/gitsigns.nvim (git integration) norcalli/nvim-colorizer.lua (color preview) ``` there is quite a bit more; but these are the big ones in terms of functionality. ::: PS: if you use another text editor feel free to show off plugins for that too.

    following people from mastodon/peertube

quick question but I've read that lemmy federates with both mastodon and peertube (I have checked and can find myself here: https://mastodon.social/@Scraft161@iusearchlinux.fyi but I am unable to see any users from mastodon or peertube. Search failing on lemmy: ![Screenshot of a search for "@torvalds@social.kernel.org" returning nothing](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/pictrs/image/17bb48e1-3cd6-4db8-a451-30d088f2327a.png "I did wait a while for federation to go through") Same search on mastodon.social: ![Screenshot of the same search successfully returning the user's profile](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/pictrs/image/700c567b-26c3-431f-9711-897e3993450f.png "here it popped up instantly") Is there something I'm doing wrong or has federation not been implemented both ways as of yet? EDIT: minor formatting regarding images

    [Discussion] privacy issues regarding Lemmy

I want to preface this with the fact that I'm quite new to lemmy and using the fediverse as a whole (this is my first account on a fediverse server), but I have had my eyes on the concept for a while now. What I want to address is some of the issues regarding Lemmy and I want to discuss solutions to addressing those. I do want to note that I haven't looked into the source for lemmy and my personal source of information is [this thread on mastodon](https://mastodon.social/@HistoPol/110522257089980041) which also talks about the political issues with this platform (I'm going to be sidestepping the political/humanitarian views the devs seem to have for this thread as I want to keep discussion here purely about the privacy of the platform) the issues I want to address here are related to how lemmy deals with "deleted" content. 1. comments deleted by users are still visible to admins 2. deleted user accounts still have their data remain on the instance. both of these are serious issues concerning user privacy and also violate several laws around the world regarding privacy (most notably the EU's GDPR). additionally these seem to be easy (if not trivial) to address from a code perspective so I don't see why these changes could not be made by someone familiar with the project and then used by instances before they get merged in the main project (if they will ever do so). I want instance admins to be aware of this particular issue (not just for my home instance, but as many as we can) and thus want this thread to be one of open discussion about how we would go about this. I'm just a random guy on the internet; but I want to know what we can do about this at the very least and maybe actually make some sort of difference.
