Oh I don't know, the one on the left looks like she's smiling with her eyes. The one on the right just looks kind of disdainful, like: "why is this low-class non-Yomut person erecting this box in my presence?" And I bet the clothes look better in person. Not sure why they're leaning like that, though.

Well I'm glad you found a movie you like. But I gotta say, "the movie is bad because it was made bad on purpose" just seems like copium.
Since you're interested in history: Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace" also makes an anti-Great Man point about Napoleon, both in Tolstoy's depiction of the Battle of Borodino, as well as in historical thoughts that are usually collected at the end of that novel. I don't remember if Bondarchuk's movie adaption of War and Peace retains that theme, but you can see it on youtube. The best Napoleon movie is arguably Waterloo which is somewhat critical of Napoleon. Likewise, the Napoleon miniseries has him act like kind of a doofus at times (and has an interesting depiction of the Napoleon-Josephine relationship).
I guess I'm just kind of bitter about this film because most of us in the US don't have a lot of knowledge about European history since our teachers are underpaid, our academics are ridiculed, and because our historical movies and TV shows are generally ahistorical cartoonish BS like this one.

From reading the reviews and social media comments, it annoyed anyone with an interest in history.
If I were paid to promote this film, I'd say something like: you can tell from the previews and the theatrical release that there's good cinematography, set design, costumes, etc. Well in the extended version there's MORE of it. And then tacitly suggest that people play it in the background with the sound off while listening to classical music.

It's a great movie, the best movie yet to come out under the Dungeons and Dragons name. However:
The film made $93 million domestically, which is not good compared to the $150 million budget. Luckily, its worldwide total was $208.2 million, but with marketing costs, it is likely the film did not break even.
https://movieweb.com/dungeons-and-dragons-sequel-unlikely/
It's often difficult to identify why a film didn't perform well, but fan anger over the licensing changes likely contributed, e.g. see: https://screenrant.com/dungeons-dragons-honor-among-thieves-box-office-bomb-reason/
The movie could have been a huge hit instead of just maybe breaking even. Trying to rip off the core fans right before it came out was a dumb idea.

Yes, this is a really entertaining movie. It's kind of like "Gone with the Wind" in that it presents a very skewed historical perspective but does so in a technically-accomplished way. It's worth watching because it shows the American perspective on its place in the world back in the early 60s.

tbh this is an "okay" but not really great film. The film's about the conflict between a corrupt Carribean governor and a ship of pirates. It's mostly interesting because [James Earl Jones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Earl_Jones) (RIP) is in it. ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fec952e01-f1d4-46f9-a0e3-8696e5a72388.png) He must have been around 44 when this was filmed. He'd been winning awards on Broadway and had been getting movie roles here and there. He would have been doing the voice of Darth Vader around the time this came out and then in the 80s and 90s his career really took off. ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F16358956-4bc6-43d1-b2c8-b8374479b41d.png) In this movie he plays a supporting role, but gets a decent amount of screen time. Anyway, the movie bombed so it's usually forgotten. I just thought of it because of his passing -- he seems to be having a good time in the movie, or maybe he was just acting. (another James Earl Jones role posted previously is in: Conan the Barbarian: https://lemm.ee/post/36207082)

The [Schlieffen Plan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlieffen_Plan) had failed. It's hard to get a sense of the amount of death that WWI brought, but here's a thought. The First Battle of the Marne had killed or seriously wounded well over half a million people. And in the US in 1910, [only 5 cities](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_populous_cities_in_the_United_States_by_decade#1910) had significantly more than half a million people. Just this one battle at the start of WWI was roughly equivalent to Cleveland, Baltimore, or Pittsburgh in that era being wiped out by a modern nuclear device. Meanwhile in the US, Everett True was getting annoyed by a man jingling his change. Get some perspective, E!

It's not a bad example of the "[after school special](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_school_special)" genre, but it's mainly interesting because of the actors in it. [Mark Hamill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Hamill) plays the boyfriend of the main character. This was a couple years before Star Wars (and far, far away from the abominations that Disney would later produce). [Linda Blair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Blair) plays the main character; she'd recently starred in The Exorcist, had been doing a number of supporting roles in films, and would go on to make a series of horror films. On the Western Front, Imperial Germany's invasion was underway and the French and British armies had [been in retreat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Retreat) for almost a week. Among the engagements of this day was [a skirmish near Néry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affair_of_N%C3%A9ry), where a dismounted British cavalry division fought a dismounted German cavalry division. The outnumbered British forces prevailed, and three British soldiers were later awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross. The French and British forces continued to retreat, but they were doing so in an orderly manner, and in a few days they would be ready to counterattack in [one of the most significant battles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Battle_of_the_Marne) of the century. Meanwhile, in rapidly-urbanizing America, Everett True was beginning to wonder if cars were a good idea after all.

The film's consensus reads, "It's noticeably subject to the law of diminishing returns, but Rocky III still has enough brawny spectacle to stand in the ring with the franchise's better entries". ... Gene Siskel gave the film two-and-a-half stars out of four and wrote, "Sorry to say this, but there's not anything new in Rocky III, and we sit there wondering why it exists." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_III OK, I'll tell you why it exists. ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Ff82cea80-e385-4b15-b57e-e12337bceff9.png) A. There's also a fun "Rocky being successful" montage where he goes on the Muppet Show and poses with motorcycles while Clubber Lang prepares to beat him down. And some great supporting roles from Burt Young and Burgess Meredith. Besides that, sure, it's a formula Rocky film but there's nothing wrong with that. *When someone praises Reddit on Lemmy*: ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fdf50f5ea-a65f-4b8b-b6d1-dc475f8b190e.png) - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x91wziq - the link from above - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x902lne - Spanish dub - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8vkam4 - Portuguese dub **BONUS FILM** Over the Top (1987) - Stallone plays a trucker single father who bonds with his kid over the sport of arm-wrestling - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyVokX7JnEU (360p) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-BBgKzcWO8 (1440p) - another link, this one's higher-res visually but the other one has better sound, go figure - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over_the_Top_(1987_film)

Hi, I was thinking of getting a Framework 13 and putting Linux on it. So I was looking at the [Ubuntu installation instructions](https://guides.frame.work/Guide/Ubuntu+24.04+LTS+Installation+on+the+Framework+Laptop+13/331) and it says a "Storage Expansion Card" is required to install. I click "view" to see what that is, and [the item page](https://guides.frame.work/Item/Storage_Expansion_Card) says it's a 250GB Type. The URL provided goes to a dead link, but I think that means a "250GB (2nd Gen) Storage Expansion Card" for $45 on the configuration page. I've installed Ubuntu before, but I just used a plain USB stick, and the instructions aren't clear on whether that's enough or whether I need to use their specific drive for some reason. So my question is: when I'm configuring a Framework 13, do I need to add a 250GB expansion card, or can I just use a USB stick that I already have (to install Ubuntu)? Thanks.

The budget was modest and the acting is only serviceable, but the basic story is reasonably well-developed, and it was a new idea at the time. Fun Facts: > According to author Roger Zelazny, the film developed from an initial outline that he wrote in 1981, based in part upon his novella "He Who Shapes" and 1966 novel The Dream Master. He was not involved in the project after 20th Century Fox bought his outline. Because he did not write the film treatment or the script, his name does not appear in the credits; assertions that he removed his name from the credits are unfounded.[4] The music score is by French composer Maurice Jarre. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamscape_(1984_film) - the link from above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw8Ty_4boDY (480p) - look for an invidious interface: https://redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=mw8Ty_4boDY - alternate link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3vcSLNH_94 (360p)

By 2007, critics were divided over whether the movie should be seen as deeply anti-imperialist or as racist.[32] ... In 2010, Alex von Tunzelmann of The Guardian gave the film a grade of B, saying: "The Zulus are a mystery, the Welsh are misplaced, a Victoria Cross recipient is slandered, and no one has enough facial hair. Nonetheless, Zulu is a brilliantly made dramatisation of Rorke's Drift, and it does a fine job of capturing the spirit for which the battle is remembered." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zulu_(1964_film) tbh I found it hard to empathize with the British. But it was interesting to watch two-rank and three-rank volley fire being executed, especially as compared to the Zulu rifle use. (Although note there are [limits to the historical accuracy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zulu_(1964_film)#Historical_accuracy) of the film.) There was also a class conflict theme between the two British officers, one an upper-class "inheritor" of his post, the other a military engineering officer who achived his post more meritocratically. And of course there were distinctions between the English, the Welsh, the Boers, and their allied "native contingent". Overall, this movie is great as a starting point to inspire further reading, less so as a work that makes a worthwhile point by itself.
