  • Emulation Emulation Switch Emulator Yuzu is dead, 3DS emulator Citra also affected
    Jump
  • RealM RealM 7 months ago 100%

While this super sucks and is a loss for the wider Emulation community, I think this is the first time where I can actually see where Nintendo is coming from in one of those legal dilemmas.
(Disclaimer: Not a lawyer, some of this is hearsay. I'm only an avid reader, but haven't actually ever done any switch emulation myself. Keep your salt grains ready and correct me if I share wrong information please.)

Yuzu appearently raked in 30k USD per month on their patreon. And many of these patreons were most likely not just donating out of good will and with a "Thank you" mindset, but they were actually in it for the supporter/early access builds, which were time-gated behind these subscriptions. This automatically raises an eyebrow for me. Second problem, one of these early-access branches appearently had optimizations for running Tears of the Kingdom, even before it officially released (the game got leaked 1~2 weeks early). This meant, for a short period of time, the yuzu emulator was the only way to play Nintendo's game (besides using a homebrewed switch) and I think this put them in a direct competition against Nintendo.
That is just an absolute no-go when you're trying to provide legal and safe emulation. This basically invites pirates with a big welcome mat.
Correction: I just found out, official yuzu builds never ran TotK pre-release. It was modded versions through 3rd party devs.

The core idea of "good" emulation is video game preservation and the right, to do whatever you yourself want with your property.
The yuzu devs in this scenario seemed like they were trying to make a profit off of giving early access to someone elses copyrighted work. And that does sound pretty illegal to me.

What Nintendo is trying to argue in their writing doesn't super resonate with me though. yuzu emulator needs a file from the switch OS called "prod.keys" in order to decrypt and to actually play switch games. Nintendo argues that any attempt at extracting this file is "circumventing digital copyright millenium act", and therefore yuzu is facilitating piracy because it ONLY works with this file. This also seems to be the reason why they went after the tool that is used to extract prod.keys, called "Lockpick" earlier last year.

I don't think using a program to obtain your own keys from your own property should be illegal. While sharing those files might very well be.

Overall, very iffy topic, just a reminder to any Emulation Devs to always take the safe route whenever possible. In my personal opinion, I don't think developers should even try to emulate any games that are newer than ~1 year, as a show of faith that there is no monetary incentive.

Entirely depends on what you're looking for in an anime and manga. It's full of hornybait and fanservice, but also does manage to tell a romantic high school story about how you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover and how you gotta keep striving to be your best self while also staying true to your feelings.

It's genuinely wholesome, but also targeted more towards guys. If you're put off by that description, avoid it. If it sounds like your cup of tea, go for it.

I like the VA for Sung Jinwoo. He's definitely doing a banger job.

But I do miss some of the more intricate page-spanning artworks where you had to scroll from left to right to even get the full picture of what's going on. I guess that is just very hard to adapt to an animated format.

Personally I enjoyed it, but it definitely felt more like a "slice of fantasy world life". Elaina doesn't really play the hero too much, and there aren't any big overarching plots that stretch over multiple episodes. It's really inspiring and interesting from a fantasy perspective, but as you already pointed out, sometimes there are things in the worldbuilding that could bother one.

If you want a cozy magic anime, might I suggest Little Witch Academia?
It also has a fair amount of action/adventure, but it doesn't deal with any heavy topics IIRC.

"Legal" doesn't immediately mean "moral". Everything is legal as long as there isn't a law specifically banning it, and those laws often only get created as a result of someone abusing their legal right to something.

Google collects also way more data than you pointed out, in every avenue possible. Ever solved a captcha? You likely helped Google train their image recognition AI. Got an android smartphone (a brand that previously had committed itself to being open-source and linux based)? Have fun with pre-installed unremovable Google Spyware. Google can remotely (without your consent) download and delete apps on your smartphone, read your personal data (including stuff you have saved on your SD card) and accesses your camera, pictures and GPS-Data regularly.

I've struggled with this question before myself. On the one hand, there is a notable impact in visibility on posts which I've self-upvoted versus posts which I did not self-upvote, so it does feel like an unfair advantage. On the other hand, I am also a community member in the community I post. I wouldn't post something, if I didn't think it contributes to the overall community. Plus, there's a bug in kbin going on, that new posts only show up in new but not in hot at all, until there is at least some sort of interaction (a comment, or an upvote, or a boost).

I appreciate your consideration but if you smoke regularly, chances are you don't truly realize how bad you smell and just how far the stench carries.

Also the argument of dying early is flawed. It's not just about dying early, it's about the quality of life you'll face at the end of your life. I don't mean to freak you out, but heavy smokers have a LOT of trouble doing anything physical in old age (climbing 10 stairs, standing up, walking a few steps, eating,...). I've seen firsthand how my grandpa that liked to take walks for hours a day went to basically disabled, in the timeframe of roughly ~15 years. All due to decreased lung capacity caused by smoking.

Personally, I block anything related to news&politics on the fediverse (same on reddit).

Humans have a structural problem with any system that allows voting on the visibility of headlines. It encourages outrage, populism, attention grabbing headlines while discouraging more refined factual discussions. Kinda like tabloid journalism.
Reddit has the same problem and way worse, but with enough time it will happen here too.

Most users read the headline before giving their own opinion, not many take their time to read a majority of other comments and the least amount of users actually read the linked article (which is to be honest also often the fault of the quality of an article, i.e. being too long, boring and partially ai-generated).

This results in the most lukewarm most agreeable opinions being top comments, while they're also oftentimes being uninformed.

This is just what I gathered from my own personal experience with social media, I don't have any good sources to back up my claims.

I recently watched the documentary this article talks about on why Gollum had to fail the way it did. It was a very informative piece, questioning a lot of the devs and the company in question, and receiving in-depth answers from them (sometimes anonymous).

It boiled down to exactly what you would expect. Overworked developers and artists, who regularly were subjected to crunch, while also being criminally underpaid (some of them even weren't considered real employees and just voluntary interns, so the company could dodge german minimum wage).
None of them made a bad videogame on purpose, they were just insanely underfunded, not experienced enough in this new genre and the new engine and on top of that, the rights to the LotR IP were time-limited, so they had to release it sooner or later.

The "apology" that was tweeted out, was actually sent out without any of the devs input or knowledge, by their parent company "nacon". And yes, ChatGPT was likely used for it.

What do you think about upvoting/boosting your own post?

**For clarification, I am not talking about using multiple accounts. I am talking about using a single account, and giving your own post a single upvote.** So, I have been doing daily posts of some anime fanart for a while now and noticed something. If you post something, unlike on reddit, kbin does not initially upvote your own post. This lead me to an interesting (albeit old) discovery. If you upvote your own post directly after posting, it gains more visibility and reaches a higher number of upvotes on average. Posts that I did not give the initial upvote consistently gained less visibility and a lower number of upvotes. Admittedly, this is not news, same principle was true on reddit as well, the initial impression in roughly the first hour of a post dictates most of its visibility for its lifetime. However, upvoting your own post does have a bit of an odd feeling. I like the content I post and am glad when people see it, so I upvote it most of the time, however, doesn't it hold an unfair advantage over people who don't upvote their own posts and just let the community create the visibility of the post? I'd be interested to hear other peoples thoughts on it.
