It should be possible to patent only real stuff, not broad concepts that can be applied to everything

If you make a backup with a tool like Borg that creates encrypted archives, then using AWS S3 glacier is the cheapest.

What's bad about it: if you ever need those files again, it's going to be VERY expensive to download them again, so it has to be treated as the "what if a nuke hits my city and all the local and off-site backups are vaporized" solution

Also: it's not recommended to directly host plain files, they need to be in an archive format with big chunks, as the API calls that are used to list them during sync are counted in a very expensive way

The main advantage of using custom silicon is that you can decide the naming and so you deceive users that the minor 0.1 update is a full generation advance

Kinda like I saw someone saying "apple skipped A17 for the iPhone 16 and gave the faster A18" - they're in charge of the naming and they can easily decide that A18 = A17

Yes my cylinder isn't compatible, it won't allow inserting a key from the other side. But I saw they sell a replacement one for 100 euro

Not being internet connected isn't the end of the world, but that hidden expensive in-app purchase is really scammy because you would only notice that after you bought the device, after installation and probably even after the return window. All YouTube reviewers got the pro model, which doesn't have this artificial limitation. If I didn't watch that video, I would noticed that after years (I don't have enough matter/thread devices to justify the purchase of a hub yet)

And also the door opening sensor isn't included in the box but of course YouTube reviewers are showing it as part of the kit because they got all included. And the product page doesn't specify that explicitly.

Searched the user manual in PDF to learn more about the product, it's 4 sentences that explain absolutely nothing

So in the end I wanted the base model over the pro because for me having 4 AAs instead of a "proprietary" battery pack (4 AAs in a custom plastic shell) is much better and giving direct full internet access to the door lock via WiFi is too scary... but between the missing opening sensor, the IAP, the build quality, I think I will choose another one

Thanks for the link, in that thread I found two promising products, Nuki and tedee.

One is small and stylish but uses a tiny expensive single use battery, the other is plasticly and bulky but uses 4 standard AAs

I'll check specs carefully to see if they have enough torque

Edit: the 190 euro Nuki lock is advertised as "matter/thread compatible" but you need to pay a 50 euro in-app purchase in order to enable it. This is not stated anywhere, including the user manual, website and support faq. I discovered that from a YouTube review

What device can rotate a knob and works with HA?

I was accidentally locked out of home again, and I had to call a professional to open the lock. But if someone was home, they could have just turned the knob of the door from inside. There's a device that can do that? It needs to do 3 full turns and it requires a bit of force to do that (armored door with iron bars that slide in every direction, so it has a big inertia to start) I saw a ready solution on a store, the iseo x1r, but that costs 1000 euro + another 200 for the gateway (not mandatory but otherwise it uses proprietary Bluetooth protocol and so it can't talk with HA

I set garage via docker and it was not impossibly hard.

Main problem is that there isn't an admin panel and you can't login to the docker container via docker exec, so you have to write some python (or other language of your choice) to send requests to the API port to:

    1. Set the layout of your server
    2. Create an user
    3. Create a bucket
    4. Assign that bucket to your user

In Italy, the cost of subscription for streaming serie A soccer is 5% of the average net wage. And then you need to add the cost of broadband as it's only streamed, no TV broadcast.

A low wage worker would need to literally skip meals in order to watch those overpaid clowns kick a ball.

Buy less Lamborghinis, reduce the price, have enough servers to allow for a service that doesn't crash and stutter for the first half of the match, then maybe more people would stop paying the illegal IPTV services that are charging 1/10th of the legit service

As of now, illegal IPTV services are giving a better service (no stuttering for half match), a better experience (a m3u can work with older smart TVs without Android) for 90% less money. And sometimes even better support

Many people also pay for a VPN+a subscription to paramount plus USA and they can watch serie a from Italy at 50% off.

Yes, ok the C suite is going to get a fat check, but being acquired by a company that exclusively focus on making money isn't really a good thing. Selling database support to enterprises don't have the exponential growth that those investors are usually craving. Are those investors OK with a slow but steady income flow?

Because usually those are masquerading as legitimate apps.

Real example: Google allows "Muhammad mahmood ali" from Pakistan to run fake ads pretending to be a more famous corporation (flagged, google replied that this individual isn't breaking the TOS somehow, flagged again, the bot replied that yes, that phishing page doesn't break AdWords TOS - probably the scammers are serving different content according to the IP address)

When someone searches for "dji app", they get an ad that looks legitimate and goes to a fake landing page where they say to download and install this apk, showing a fake "100% safe and trusted" logo.

So, they can't say the list of the infected apps, because the real apps aren't affected. Someone could have been tricked by a fake ad to install an infected version of "bank of America" but the real app is clean

I made something crude with python and flask, but it's only to print address labels, always the same settings (paper size and so on)

So i just put a textbox, press the button and it prints there.

When printing generic stuff, you would need to set paper type, paper size, color or BW, if have both sides printed, if printing from a specific tray, then some kind of user authentication (i am lazy and i didn't care about privacy so i used cloudflare access), so the complexity becomes much bigger.

Before making my crude script I searched long time for a free or cheap solution, but I didn't find. If you find, let me know

    Appuntamenti "puntuali" all'italiana

Luglio 2024: devo fare una pratica all'ambasciata italiana.

People that bought Resident Evil iOS ports are pissed that now there's a mandatory DRM online check at launch. Punish only the idiot customer who paid $150 and can't play, when pirates laugh at that www.engadget.com

Many users bought Resident evil for iOS because it was working offline. Perfect for long trips. But a new update adds a mandatory DRM online check at start-up. I wrote bought, but actually the word is rented. One day Capcom stops updating the games (and this is 100% guaranteed) and a few years later the "owner" gets "This app needs to be updated to run on this iPhone" Meanwhile, people who pirated a cracked ipa, don't get any issue in playing the game offline. DRM exclusively hurts the paying customers.

I love the new sponsored clickbait in my firefox start page

Wow, that's awesome! I was very sad without the clickbait articles. I was staring at Firefox thinking "i wish it had a cluttered start page with clickbait articles and sponsored content like MS Edge" - and then with this new update the devs nailed it! Thanks! That's really perfect!

"We're committed to release firmware updates to our devices at least until 2026" - says a company that launched a device with a 3 years old version of android.

(it's a tablet in a smartphone form factor, it doesn't have cellular connectivity) For reference, android 14 was announced 6 months before the launch of this device. It's a bit surprising that Google still allows device certification with such ancient, unsupported and vulnerable OS. All the marketing materials don't say which CPU it's using except "Qualcomm octa core CPU" - that means nothing as the description could apply to the Snapdragon 415, which was a low end slow system on a chip released ten years ago. Maybe it could explain why they're using an ancient version of Android - the soc that they're using it's a leftover found in some warehouse and it's already unsupported by the manufacturer; they're forced to use android 11.

Washing machine chime scandal shows how absurd YouTube copyright abuse can get arstechnica.com

TL;DR: for a whole decade YouTube allowed a copyright troll to claim all the rights on a recording of a washing machine end cycle chime The account of the copyright troll is still standing and it's not permanently banned IMHO in this case YouTube should permanently ban at the first offense any copyright troll that maliciously claim as their property something that's in the public domain Also: if it wasn't that it affected a big streamer with lots of followers, YouTube would have ignored the problem

    Did tiktok change something?

I have friends that send me tiktok links via whatsapp and then they ask questions about it like "what do you think, scam or not". I used to open them with cookies rejected in ddg browser but now it pretends to freeze after 4 seconds of play, then it says that i must open it in the app and replaces the "play" button with a fake button that leads to google play. I assume that there's no way to watch it anymore without an account and without the app, right?

    Syncthing saved my ass

Note for Americans: here WhatsApp is the de facto communication standard. Literally nobody uses SMS/iMessage/Facebook messenger/signal. And carriers still charge 2 euro for a MMS which completely kills iMessage/RCS (if accidentally send MMS, it's expensive) I switched phones and instead of copying manually /Android/data/media/com.whatsapp I used the new feature of pairing via qr code. Besides that's a not very well designed feature (you need to start transfer on the old phone *before* logging in the new phone) because they really want to store unencrypted backups on Google drive, the transfer completed in a short time. Maybe too fast, I was expecting at least one hour to transfer the 5000 photos 10gb, instead it completed in 20 seconds. So I told myself, ok photos not transferred, I'll just do that manually and directly put them in the photo archive on my PC rather than keep them mixed with all the "happy holidays" trash. I browse the old phone to /Android/data/media/com.whatsapp and... It's empty. Wiped clean after the "successful" transfer process! Luckily I had set syncthing (the fork on fdroid, the one on play store doesn't have access to whole storage) to have a full overnight backup! On my PC I still had all the photos, almost deleted too as I noticed that I didn't set the "trash can" option Conclusion: go to download syncthing fork from fdroid and have a safety net from mistakes like this

Someone purchased the old domain of a FOSS app, then it's using it to deceive users to download adware

One of those two sites is distributing adware. Which of them? File Converter (FOSS) by [Adrien Allard](https://github.com/Tichau) was hosted on file-converter[.]org since a decade. Then someone a few weeks ago snatched that domain and it's now distributing adware. Almost identical design for the page, 100% designed to deceive users to download a different product, as it's called Zamzar.

Make your contacts less anonymous with Micopi f-droid.org

I turned on my old HTC espresso after a decade and I remembered that I loved this app. It creates an unique profile image for contacts without a profile picture So now when you open the contact list instead of having a list of capital letters in a circle you have a list of capital letters in a more colorful circle Unfortunately it's now outdated and discontinued, but it still works on Android 14. Seems like some asshole took the source code and republished the app as is, without credit, in the Amazon app store to get some financial incentive (around 2014 blackberry paid devs to republish their apps and many assholes decided that it was a good idea to "steal" open source apps) After this, dev took development private but then got tired of the update treadmill that Google forces on the play store, so the apps were automatically delisted. Luckily, fdroid doesn't have such artificial limitations on outdated apps that still work as intended.

Arrivano i piani energetici a costo fisso: solo a me paiono una truffa colossale? www.mondo3.com

I decided that I will update the nextcloud (windows) desktop client once or twice a decade

I've enough. Last year the automatic updater was rebooting windows without any warning after the uac prompt. The problem continued for **months** before being fixed This year I got an update a week. Very annoying to get the same "why u no reboot? I need updates" question every single time I turn on my PC. Today when updating it kills explorer.exe without any confirmation and doesn't bring it back to life. I don't think that their paid enterprise customers are doing the ~~beta~~ alpha testers like this. Is it really necessary to push nightlies to end users? It can't be tested casually for a couple of days then pushed? I disabled the updates check and will update the nextcloud desktop client manually every 5 years if I can remember. Added an exception to Winget so it doesn't update it. I lost my patience.

Odio i software "call for pricing"
