Consider the fact they may be using a 3rd party application, like ErsatzTV or similar, to create a "virtual" tv station that just plays videos in sequence after being added to a channel.

You can always reach out to the user in question if you're concerned though. I generally wouldn't open my plex up to users unless I had regular communication with them anyway, but that's a personal thing I think...

Edit: Another thing to note is that, depending on the user's tech savvyness, they might not be aware that you can see what content they're watching. If you aren't close friends, it might turn them off the service to have an admin approach them about the content that you yourself are hosting. Consider this and really weigh whether it's your own business or not. And obviously, to be clear, you definitely shouldn't be charging for this service so make sure that you're not putting yourself in potential legal problems.

I mean, I sort of get why the developers say it's Discord's policy even if it's a bit misleading.

Game developers don't really want to moderate their own discord server and simply want to use the strictest automated filtering system available and this just happens to include phone number linking. The operators of the servers themselves do not have access to these phone numbers and they are only stored by discord directly to prevent spam.

I would personally prefer games to not have their communities tied to discord, akin to how forums were big deal for games back in the day, but even then they do need some kind of automated way to filter out all the crap. This is a problem with moderating any community, including a lemmy/kbin/mastodon, and I don't blame them for simply picking the strictest option to ease the burden on the 1 or 2 people who are charged with managing these servers (especially if they are unpaid or volunteers, which is a whole other can of worms that shouldn't happen...)

I think he's been pretty good short of broad legalization -- but you can't blame him when it's still illegal in the majority of states.

According to most sites TOS, when we write our posts we give them basically full access to do whatever they like including make derivative works.

    2 points:
1 - I'm generally talking about companies extracting data from other websites, such as OpenAI scraping posts from reddit or other such postings. Companies that use their own collection of data are a very different thing.
2 - Terms of Service and Intellectual Property are not the same thing and a ToS is not guaranteed to be a fully legally binding document (the last part is the important part.) This is why services that have dealt with user created data that are used to licensing issues (think deviant art or other art hosting services) usually require the user to specify the license that they wish to distribute their content under (cc0, for example, would be fully permissible in this context.) This also means that most fan art is fair game as licensing that content is dubious at best, but raises the question around whether said content can be used to train an AI (again, intellectual property is generally different from a ToS).

It's no different from how Github's Copilot has to respect the license of your code regardless of whether you've agreed to the terms of service or not. Granted, this is legally disputable and I'm sure this will come up at some point with how these AI companies operate -- This is a brave new world. Having said that, services like Twitter might want to give second thought of claiming ownership over every post on their site as it essentially means they are liable for the content that they host. This is something they've wanted to avoid in the past because it gives them good coverage for user submitted content that they think is harmful.

If I was a company, I wouldn't want to be hinging my entire business on my terms of service being a legally binding document -- they generally aren't and can frequently be found to be unbinding. And, again, this is different from OpenAI as much of their data is based on data they've scraped from websites which they haven't agreed to take data from (finders-keepers is generally not how ownership works and is more akin to piracy. I wouldn't want to base a multinational business off of piracy.)

As an added note to the development team @ernest and others:

This has worked pretty well and I'm now trying to clean up the areas I have ownership of now. However, I have a few notes:

    1. I would like it if, in the case of a community ownership transfer happens, that the original "founder" account was noted on the right hand side with the panel details. It would be nice to know this as a moderator or owner of a magazine as, if the user ever comes back, they could reapply for moderation access and I could approve knowing that the person was actually the original founder. Right now, it would be hard to verify that the person submitting a mod request is actually the person who originally founded the community for example.

    2. It would be nice if moderators had the ability to add badges to existing posts to help clean up communities that might have had a lot of content but not much in terms of badge management.

    3. When ownership transfers, it would be nice to get a notification. When transfer of /m/manga and /m/bitwig came to me, for example, I didn't notice until a few days after since I didn't receive a notification.

Should these types of issues be posted as a "bug"? Or is it better to just leave feedback here?

This is actually true, but it doesn't speak to why self hosting is "impossible" and more to how the lack of education around computers have reached an inflection point.

There's no reason why self hosting should be some bizarre concept; In another reality, we would all have local servers and firewalls that then push our content into the wider internet and perhaps even intranet based notes. Society as a whole would be better if we chose to structure the internet that way instead of handing the keys to the biggest companies on the stock market.

I'll give this podcast a listen to though, as it might be interesting. I think the reality is that some more docker frontends might help casual users jump into the realm of self hosting -- especially be setting up proxy managers and homepage sites (like homarr) that work intuitively that never requires you to enter ports and IPs (though fearing that is also an education problem, not a problem with the concept itself.)

    Jump
  • MoogleMaestro MoogleMaestro 11 months ago 100%

I have a kind of complicated system for organizing my music files -- some of which is admittedly way too much maintenance but it might be of interest to some.

For my general "commercial" music collection, the folder structure is roughly
    Music/%Release Artist | Band%/%Album%[%Year%]/%Track No.% - %Title%.%Format%

This is simple to maintain. I basically just use MusicBrainz Picard and set up appropriate paths.

For my soundtrack collection, it gets a bit more complicated. For Anime/Film/Whatever, I have it sorted basically the same way but in a different root folder. So something like:
    Music/Anime/%Release Artist | Band%/%Album%[%Year%]/%Track No.% - %Title%.%Format%

Which is also easy to maintain since most of these also have commercial releases.

But games are sorted more strangely. To put it simply, I have a folder structure that puts the console or platform first, followed by the game name and then the loose files. Since some of these files are emulated formats (.vgm, .nsf, .spc), I generally don't bother renaming them and keep them as is and trust that the music program in question has tagging support. It also means that having them sorted by console is mostly beneficial to quickly find emulated file formats, but YMMV and I have regretted the choice on occasion.

Obviously game soundtracks are spotty when it comes to releases. Some companies have reliable metadata you can get from MusicBrainz Picard, like SquareEnix, but others have no tagging at all or very incorrect tag values. Because of this, I generally use something like VGMDB, which is usually higher quality but not always. I do have to resort to manually correcting files on occasion.

If anyone has a nice automated way to sort this stuff out, it would be a real benefit to me as well.

Spotify serves mp3s because it uses less bandwidth and most people can’t tell the difference on their 30€ Bluetooth headset.

I think this highlights a bigger issue when it comes to this discussion.

The issue isn't the mp3 format -- for the most part, the format of any lossy encoder can sound good with the right settings. The problem is that, unlike flac, all encoded lossy files are essentially untrustworthy audio formats. So when people say mp3 sounds bad, it's only a half truth in the same way that it's a half truth to say that people cannot tell a difference. You are putting trust in the person who encoded the audio to make the right choice and the encoder is putting trust in the idea that the person consuming the media can't tell the difference.

When it comes to being cheap on bandwidth since most users can't hear it, that's a huge cop-out being made for a company that can do better. While Apple is pretty notorious for making terrible decisions for arbitrary reasons, even they respect the user enough to allow you to opt into higher audio format quality. It's decisions like these that cement Apple as the kings of the creative computer user.

NGinx Proxy Manager and Domain Routing to Docker Services on Specific Ports

So, while this is not exactly a typical "self-hosting" question as many users might not be using domains, I would be curious if anyone else has any experience with this. I have NGinx Proxy Manager installed on a vps and a few docker instances that host various services (wordpress, a gitlab, etc etc) that I have bound to specific ports (wordpress to port 80, gitlab to port 3000, to give made up arbitrary examples.) I also have a domain and a few subdomains registered as Type A resource records that look like: [www.]somedomain[.com] [gitlab.]somedomain[.com] The essence of the question: When I go to NGinx Proxy Manager and register a "Proxy Host" for the gitlab subdomain, like: Domain: gitlab.somedomain.com Scheme: http Forward Hostname: \<IP ADDRESS HERE\> Forward Port: 3000 (AKA the port gitlab is hosted on) This works, but it comes with the drawback that the port number is then exposed in the url bar like so: `gitlab.somedomain.com:3000` So is there some way to fix this on the NGINX proxy manager side of things? Or is this a case where I'm doing this completely wrong and someone with web-dev experience can help me see the light. While it's not a huge hindrance to my use-case, it would still be nice to understand how this is supposed to work so that I can host more services myself that require domain names without having to shell out for isolated IPs. So if I hosted a lemmy or kbin, for example, I could actually configure it to use my subdomains correctly.

To be fair to Capcom, I think that an ideal world for them would be not having to compete against games whose expectations and ideations are out-of-wack with the price point and requires huge sales numbers to even be profitable.

For example, SF6 has a full single player mode that exceeds any of the output of previous games. While the quality of this single player mode is sub-par, it's still very ambitious compared to their old method of releasing fighting games (Arcade mode and Versus mode, with some mini games -- that's all!) and it finds itself having to compete with other 60 dollar titles whose scope is often outlandish while knowing full well that a fighting game can never move FPS game figures, for example.

The 60 dollar game made a lot more sense in the era of the PS2 where games were often linear experiences, sometimes lightly to heavily cinematic. A game that was made like MGS2 could be sold today for 60 dollars and it would have a very hard time competing against huge blockbusters like Starfield, with some probably scoffing at the idea of paying 60 dollars for that experience. (See Armored Core 6 -- a good example of this that actually happened.)

Fighting Game Players: Does DLC successfully persuade you to come back?

I was having a discussion about this with a friend recently. Back in the days of yore, fighting games would have brand new "versions" that would be repackaged with flashy names and multiple characters. These games often had yearly release cycles, or sometimes even biyearly cycles (MvC3, in particular) and there were obvious problems with this. People felt like they were "left behind" on older versions if they didn't choose to upgrade and it would make purchasing options for any outsider very confusing (especially if the games had confusing sub-titles, looking at BlazBlue!) The cherry on top: People outside of the fighting game sphere would perceive these new games as a "rip off" even if the value of the package wasn't a question to die-hard fans. An example would be Super Street Fighter IV launching with 10 new characters and 5 new stages for 40 dollars -- a price that is basically in-line with modern "seasons" in the worst case scenario and it can be debated that it was actually a great value when you consider all of the additional work and polish to other UI and gameplay elements. Since roughly 2016, these practices have shifted radically. Now, games often release new characters as part of "seasons" where roughly 5 characters are released over the course of a year -- one character at a time. So my question: **Has this been effective in getting you to relaunch the game after taking a break?** My personal opinion is that this new release cadence has been a bit worse for my ability to play and enjoy fighting games after having a break. Often, I find that my biggest issue is that there's no longer a "good time" to hop back into the game. When you only release 1 character every few months, every new update causes a vast majority of the player base to play the new character for a few days. This means that trying to play the game online will either result in a series of mirror matches or cases where you're playing against the same character consistently. This wasn't an issue when new "versions" of the game would release, as the number of new characters would often make match-ups diverse since all characters would be new simultaneously. Inversely, if you wait too long, you'll be playing against an already dried up player base of the same people who would normally play the game. Lastly, I feel like the "new game" feeling has been completely removed, where seasons hardly make the game feel like a whole new product. There have been some pleasant surprises, like booting up Guilty Gear Strive to find a much nicer, polished looking main menu compared to launch. However, these types of changes are few and far between. Additionally, some parts of the game don't seem to change ever like the in-game UI or refinement of existing characters' gimmicks. So what's your take on this. Do you think this new release cycle has been helpful or hurtful when it comes to regularly revisiting fighting games?

What's the recommended way to set up a development environment for KBin?

I haven't been able to find an answer for this, so I'm hoping asking this here would be appropriate. I'd like to try my hand at some development of Kbin but I don't exactly know how to test a web application of this scale. Obviously, the roadblock for me is understanding how to develop and test features without having a dedicated domain name -- as my understanding is that federated services heavily rely on the use of a domain name. This also would imply that the server has to be exposed to the internet, much like development of a email client. But obviously I must be missing something here. Is there any recommended guidelines for setting up a development environment for Kbin? Ideally, a containerized approach via Docker or Podman would be ideal as I wouldn't want to muck with my host system. Additionally, is it possible to use hostnames in order to simulate and test federation capabilities? Lastly, are there any thorough reads (blogs or forum posts) that go in depth with developing federated web applications and how the development process differs from standard webdev?

Keeb IO Build: Questions and tips?

I was thinking about buying a Keebio Sinc keyboard *despite never owning or making a mechanical keyboard*. [https://keeb.io/collections/sinc](https://keeb.io/collections/sinc) There are some tangible benefits of this keyboard that I really want -- specifically a **split mechanical keyboard** with **QMK support** (my current keyboard has a crappy driver situation, I would like to avoid that by using a QMK compliant keyboard) and the price is arguably pretty good for a split keyboard. I haven't found one that suits my needs for a cheaper price -- I don't necessarily need hot swap-able, but I imagine it will eventually help in the case where an individual key stops responding. If anyone knows of another deal that's less hassle or better value, let me know. Anyway, basically I know very little about building my own mechanical keyboard or just owning a proper mechanical keyboard. But I figured that if I wanted to buy a split keyboard, which are already expensive, I may as well delve into the world of mechanicals at the same time. I know there are a few well-advertised gotcha's around the keebio builds such as needing to buy a set of keycaps if I build myself and appropriately ordering the right number of stabalizers. However, I have more questions that aren't as easily answered searching so I thought I'd ask people who know a lot more about this than I do. 1. How do I know exactly how many stabalizers I need? Additionally, how do I make sure that I buy the "right" set of keycaps for the keyboard I'm making (do I look up "ANSI keycaps, ISO keycaps" or is there some other trick to make sure I buy the right "set" of keycaps?) 2. If I build my own, what other gotcha's do you think I should know that aren't advertised well on site? 3. I know that Keeb.io offers prebuilt versions, but how do you feel about the cost difference and shipping quality? Obviously it's much easier to ship disassembled than assembled,. 4. Is it a smart idea to build my own before having owned or maintained a mechanical keyboard? Despite the much higher cost, is it worth it to purchase a preassembled keyboard? 5. How do you feel about Kailh Jades vs Durock Shrimps vs Durock Dolphins? Those seem like the 3 most likely switches for me to try and most likely for me to like of the options provided on the site.

Is there a way to collapse a comment in a thread's comment section?

Is there a way to collapse a comment in a thread's comment section? I don't know if there's something I'm missing or not, but it seems like I can't collapse a comment in the comment section of a post. This is kind of a big issue for me as I like to collapse comments I've read in order to keep track of comments, especially as I work my way down a comment tree.
