Hmm, interesting. Where are you from?
I keep seeing men online (Reddit, Instagram, TikTok) saying how they don't know personal details about their male friends of several years. It is mostly said in a proud context, or in disbelief when a woman talks about it. I'm talking about knowing someone for years and not knowing what they do for work specifically, their relationship status/major issues, their life goals, their family situation, birthdays, and stuff like that. For context, I am a man in my 20s. I have a close friend group of around 10 people. We all know each other very well. We have a group chat, and meet at least once a week (obviously some people can't always make it). We know a lot of details about each other, so this idea of being close friends with someone and not knowing personal stuff about each other seems foreign and weird to me. Does it actually happen, or just internet hyperbole?

If you are still somewhat young, its better to use a pseudonym. I'm not sure how "spicy" we are talking, but you might not be as much of an "extremist" when you grow up, so it's better to not have these ideas permanently linked to your name. It might even affect job prospects, no matter whether you change your ideology or not.

I am aware of this one, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think I'll start using Kate, and contribute whatever features I'm missing if I can.
While I understand the lack of proper open source alternatives for some software like AutoCAD and After Effects, it always felt weird that the best IDEs/Text Editors are made by big corporations, because you know, these are the tools programmers use. I tried vim/neovim, which I enjoy using, but I've come to prefer visual editors instead of text based. Kate looks promising, and I'm willing to contribute to it in my free time, but it just has that "amateurish" feel to it that I can't explain. Anyone aware of other alternatives?

Exactly. I'm a mod in a few subreddits, the biggest of which is /r/Showerthoughts. People don't notice our existence unless we interact with them directly, and you rarely interact with users unless to ban them or to remove their content. So it is expected to be hated.

I'm neither American, European, Russian, nor Chinese, and have no clear vested interest in any if them. Seeing how Americans view China as the "big evil" from the outside is just mind-boggling. Most of the bad stuff you think China did, they didn't. Some of the terrible stuff they did, the US did as well. They do have a bad side that the US doesn't have, but the US does some things worse than China.
Now its easy for the naive to just reply "whataboutism" to my comment and move on. But what I'm trying to say is that the world isn't black and white. The US isn't the "good guys", no one is. Take a look at some communities on Lemmygrad. You might change some of your views.

It is common in the middle east, with some leeway. Like if someone is sitting diagonal to you such that your foot isn't directly facing them, it's okay. Unless its a professional meeting, then having your foot up is just disrespectful, but I imagine that goes for most countries.

Alright, so you don’t acknowledge the problem, still fits the definition.
I'd hate for our discussion to be about semantics, but I'm saying that we don't believe in the problem. If I'd say "Hey, regarding the vampire situation, you have your head in the sand, because you won't acknowledge the problem", it wouldn't be an accurate statement, or correct usage of the phrase.

I'm not saying that we are unwilling to recognize a problem, the problem itself is greatly exaggerated, or even non-existent.

I'm almost the same as OP, but I wouldn't call it "head in the sand". For the past few years, the media has been exaggerating everything and creating mass hysteria. If you follow the news closely, you'll think the world is about to end: Wars, economical depressions, climate changes, new pandemics, etc..
Stop following the news, and you won't notice a thing. Probably the price increases, but other than that, your life is the same.
I'm talking about the Poneglyphs in Skypia, Alabasta, and Fish-Man Island for example. Like the one in FMI, we know its Joy Boy apologizing, but it would have been great if we had the full exact text.
Looking for good games for Android. By good, I mean a game with a story, no ads or in-app purchases. I'm okay with paying for it, but I'm looking for a good experience. The game should be story-based, as in it has an ending, not an infinite game. Any recommendations?

Yeah I posted this 2 years ago. The way "Active" sorting works in Lemmy, is you see the posts with recent comments. Someone commented on this, pushing it back to the front page.
MarcellusDrum 1 year ago • 88%
HackerNews has an interesting approach: You can't downvote comments unless you reach a certain amount of "Karma", and you can't downvote posts at all, you can "flag" them, meaning you think they don't belong here. Flagging doesn't affect the vote count, but massive flagging does make the post appear lower in the feed, and alerts mods.
This, alongside the tight moderation and zero-tolerance towards flame wars in the comments makes HackerNews one of the best places on the internet imho.

Same. For me, upvote = adding something to the conversation. That's why I upvote most comments I come across, and rarely downvote people.

Comparing iPhone to "Android" isn't fair, because people conveniently compare it to the lowest end. Compare the iPhone 14 Pro Max to the S23 Ultra for example, a phone from a respected company at the same price range. And it isn't "luck". Just a quick Google search will give you the high-end Android devices currently.

Be the change you want to see in the world. Be active on !godot@lemmy.ml, and more people will hopefully come.
I mean the dev is obviously free to work on whatever he wants, but I've had a Tildes account for like 2 years now, and honestly it never got any traction. Lemmy on the other hand is getting a lot of users, and it is desperately missing a non-buggy app. Any specific reason?
Feel free to share it with people, or suggest any edits for me to make.
When browsing All, I would like to block some instances, mainly those in a different language that just clutter my feed. Is that possible?
Spoilers are allowed. Whenever I finish watching a new movie, I like to go to Reddit and browse the discussion threads to see what people thought of it. From now on, I'll start a thread here if it doesn't already exist. What did you think of the movie? How did you interpret the ending? Feel free to discuss anything about the movie you like.
No spoilers for Resurrections please, I've only watched the first 3 movies in the last couple of days. Yes, I know that I'm 20 years late to the party. I think the first movie is great, I hated the long action scenes in the second (Neo vs the Smith army got boring after a couple of minutes, and added no value), and mostly enjoyed the third, even though it didn't really feel like a Matrix movie. I've read that the fourth is terrible. Is that because it ruined people's nostalgia, or is it really that bad? I'm probably going to watch it either way, just like to hear your opinions.
Would self-hosting a Nextcloud instance locally without an internet connection be viable? Use case: Around 5 people need to share files over the network, collaborate on Office documents in real-time, use GitLab, and a To-do/Task management tool. Beyond the initial setup, does any of these requirements need an active Internet connection, or can we all connect to the Raspberry Pi server via Ethernet?
Oh wait, this ain't Poland. Never mind.

Most of you reading this are here because /r/GenZedong was quarantined. While this place is very similar to Reddit, it also has a major difference that can make it a bit confusing, which is the Federation part. Without wasting anyone's time, I'll explain things right away. # 1) What is Lemmy? -------------------- Lemmy is a link-aggregator, similar to sites like Reddit and HackerNews. But unlike Reddit, it isn't really a website you can visit, it is just a source code. But that code is Open Source, meaning anyone can see it, edit it, and use it. It was designed in such a way that you can easily take the code and create your own website with it (with some technical knowledge of course). So you can buy the domain FuckRedditLibs.com right now and make it a Lemmy website, or as we call it, a Lemmy "Instance". # 2) What is Lemmygrad? ------------------ As you can all deduce by now, Lemmygrad is a Lemmy instance. Someone took the Lemmy code, bought the Lemmygrad.ml domain, and hosted the code there. The admins of Lemmygrad.ml only control Lemmygrad.ml, they have no authority over other instances. But that means that *no one* has authority over Lemmygrad.ml except Lemmygrad.ml admins. If you create an instance, there is no higher power you have to adhere to like in Reddit. You are the captain now. If you look at Lemmygrad.ml as a standalone website, a rival to Reddit, you don't have to understand what Federation means. You can create a user account, create/join a community (subreddit), post links/images/text, basically most things you expect to do. So unlike what some might think, Lemmygrad isn't just GenZedong. GenZedong is just a community there ([!genzedong@lemmygrad.ml](https://lemmygrad.ml/c/genzedong)). There are other communities obviously, like [!communism@lemmygrad.ml](https://lemmygrad.ml/c/communism) , [!shitliberalssay@lemmygrad.ml](https://lemmygrad.ml/c/shitliberalssay) , and [!memes@lemmygrad.ml](https://lemmygrad.ml/c/memes) . You can see a list of all the communities [here](https://lemmygrad.ml/communities). # 3) What does Federation mean? ------------------ Though as said before, you can look at Lemmygrad as a standalone website. But you aren't really supposed to. What makes Lemmy powerful is the federation aspect. So Lemmygrad.ml exists. Lemmy.ml also exists (it is the instance created by the Lemmy developers, but that doesn't make it anymore "official" or important than other instances, all instances are equal). The cool thing is that all the instances are connected. If you create an account on Lemmygrad.ml, you can also view and participate with communities from all other instances! Don't believe me? Check my username. It should say [@MarcellusDrum@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/u/MarcellusDrum), which means I have created my account in Lemmy.ml, but I can post here in [!genzedong@lemmygrad.ml](https://lemmygrad.ml/c/genzedong) , which is a Lemmygrad.ml community. This is difference between the "Local" and "All" filter you see at the top of the home page. "Local" means posts from communities in your instance, and "All" means posts from communities from all federated instances. You can see the name of the instance after the usernames/name of the communities. But as we said, even though they are federated, all instances are standalone sites. So [!communism@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/c/communism) and [!communism@lemmygrad.ml](https://lemmygrad.ml/c/communism) can coexist, with different moderators, posts, users and rules. They are completely independent places. As such, if you created an account by going to Lemmygrad.ml, your account is linked to this instance. You can't go to Lemmy.ml and login using the same account there. Accounts aren't federated. So everytime you have to login, you will have to go to Lemmygrad.ml (or the instance you created your account on). If you are using an application like Lemmur, you have to specify which instance your account is linked to. Same with communities, account names are only unique in an instance. Someone can use your exact username in another instance. If you have any questions, please let me know!
